It's shitty to look a gift horse in the mouth but it's also saying 'you're beneath me' if you offer to book a family vacation and put part of the family in a cheaper place and put yourself and your immediate family in a more expensive place. They could have talked about it before-hand and said "I want to stay here but I can't afford to put you up there as well, so if you want to pitch in for your accommodations I can help put you up here as well, otherwise you're looking at something like this". If OP said something like "I'm putting myself here and you down there" it might have come across as abrasive and condescending. It depends on communication really. I get both points in the third story. It's shitty to look a gift horse in the mouth but it's also saying 'you're beneath me' if you offer to book a family vacation and put part of the family in a cheaper place and put yourself and your immediate family in a more expensive place. They could have talked about it before-hand and said "I want to stay here but I can't afford to put you up there as well, so if you want to pitch in for your accommodations I can help put you up here as well, otherwise you're looking at something like this". If OP said something like "I'm putting myself here and you down there" it might have come across as abrasive and condescending. It depends on communication really. And asking to take the kids to Disneyland and leave the parents behind kind of reinforced that "we're better than you" type thing. It's like if you take someone out for food and offer to pay, but tell them you're buying lobster but they have to order off the kids menu. It's condescending. Just don't offer at that point.

This is a free vacation. If the inlaws are really butt hurt about getting different accommodations then why not offer to pay the extra it would take to stay at OP's hotel. If someone gives someone sth free, say yes, thank u or no but thank u for the offer. That is the correct attitude to receive or politely decline blessings/gifts. They know they cannot afford it, and yet they complain abt what was given. Like the saying goes, Beggars cannot be choosers. Besides, due to their bad attitude, everyone will think twice before giving them anything anymore.
