As great as Conor was against Alvarez I always felt his absolute peak as a fighter was when he fought Jose Aldo. Before losing to Nate it felt like Conor couldn't lose and he had that Mystic Mac thing going on. Also his mentality at that time, the calmness and the witty one liners, the way he controlled press conferences... he was in that zen mode

Definitely would have loved to see a prime Frankie and Conor fight because it's hard to not like and respect Frankie just because he had a warrior's heart and an iron chin.

Conor’s rise was something nobody had ever seen in MMA. He took it to another level entirely. Hard to say he shouldn’t have taken the Floyd fight, but man that really killed his momentum in MMA. He wasn’t active enough and that division got scary instantly. If he had stayed at 145 only Max and Volk could have stopped him.

He worked for years for those few moments in that Aldo fight. I have the utmost respect for anyone that strives towards something like that and achieves it, regardless of what something is. Just a huge motivator.

How should Conor get a title shot when he wasn't even competing in LW anymore and afterwards lost to Dustin in Lw. And Dana makes the fights, just like he now forces Leon to fight Colby. Conor just didn't want to fight at lw, otherwise he would have immediately fought a lw a top 5er and earned a rematch. But he didn't

@@MasmydaMusy the UFC used to allow fighters to use iv’s to rehydrate themselves after weigh-ins, and recently Ali got on his twitter fingers about Islam and basically said that Islam had been using iv’s to rehydrate illegally and then took the post down. It’s a faster way to gain weight back from cutting weight. Obviously with Islam being a huge 155er it would give him a huge advantage.

Connor is the only fighter that brought electricity to my brain when watching him. The only fighter I stayed up till 7 in the morning to watch live. Polarizing.
Totally agree it is very special energy he always top it off the only fighter that gets me up from the chair is jones, chandler and gaetjhe but they don’t come close to bringing the dame electricity in my living room as conor but by all fighters those are the 3 that come closest

Conor at 145 was a different animal, at 155 he was still strong but the power didn’t carry over to quite the same extent as at 145.

The Aldo knockout was great. But when Conor peaked in that fight against Eddie Alvarez, it was beautiful to watch. He made Alvarez look like he had no right being in an octagon at all. Conor is a pretty big if, love or hate him, he's a big big IF. What he did to Aldo and Alvarez, taking a round off Khabib after years of being rich and out of training and coked up. Who knows, who knows
It's incredible that he just timed it and took Aldo's punch after he was knocked out.
I feel like Conor's straight left is so good because it's like Michael Jai whites technique where the brain can't see the punch because it's coming straight at you. The brain notices when guys wind up to throw big shots but a left straight down the pipe without any telegraphing doesn't allow their brain time to react and the punch that knocks you out is normally the one you didn't see. It's not about power as much it is about the technique

Hell Aldo even said it himself before the fight he was going to knock Conor out with the first punch. He told on himself and Conor predicted it and executed his answer to that perfectly. I always wonder how a rematch might have gone.
I think conors fight IQ is one of if not the highest, simarly to jon jones and I think that's what made them each so dominant. They studied their opponents and knew their tendencies well before fight night, and his knowledge of the sport is unmatched, and his analysis of Aldo just proves it. He knows what's going to happen and how its going to happen, but I think in recent years he had his focus elsewhere and the sport moved past him. I think had he kept up with his knowledge of fighters and their tendencies as well as improved upon his skillset he would have had one hell of a career, more so than he already had and probably could have even been a 3 division champion (not simultaneously holding all 3 belts but being champ in FW, LW, and WW at one point in his career)

When people say conor mcgregor changed the game he really did man. I was against watching ufc and didn’t really even want anything to do with it cause I didn’t care. When mcgregor came around his style, his charisma and his shit talkin made me love it! He really did get me into the ufc.
I will second that. I've been a big boxing fan since the mid nineties. I had zero interest in MMA until Connor came along. You could not have paid me to watch MMA prior to Connor. He 100% got me into MMA and i will beforever greatful for it. Boxing has been dwindling for years. The UFC continues to grow from stregnth to stregnth. Its a great package for a fight fan. Never ever thought i'd say this, but i'm much more into the UFC now. Boxing is not delivering for me much anymore, i'm sad about it but well happy i've got the UFC to enjoy on a very regular basis.

The amount of fame he got after knocking out Aldo and the money that came with it, it was a little bit too much for him to handle, it would have took a very disciplined mind not to change (like a Khabib type of person). The Floyd payday really tipped Conor over the edge lol

The hardest part to let go of is this-technically this can all happen again; this meteoric rise to the top and insane precision and discipline… but theoretically since money motivated him it’s not likely. Statistically he has little to no shot of making another title run like that. But people who recognize the magic of Will and Determination that we saw in Conor back then, it’s almost impossible to just let the “Mystic Mac” go, he’s just the Money Mac now and that’s a boring mode for Conor.
With every passing year it gets less likely, but watching Jon Jones come back gives us all some hope that he will attempt the same. No more 1 and done matches, let’s see a valiant effort to back up the prestige he’s claimed from day 1.

I used to be a Conor McGregor fan before he fought Mayweather and became a multi-millionaire because he came from nothing to achieving his dream and his trash talk was so precise and on-point, but when he became a multi-millionaire his entire attitude has been about money therefore causing him to become both a meme and have a ton of hated fans. It's one thing to chase two belts and get paid millions, but it's another thing to forget where he came from.

Im not even a big UFC fan, I follow main events. Masvidal provides good insight and is well spoken. I can see him entering the podcast space, but similar to this dynamic with Joe, a good co-host will bring regular content.

Not sure if he would have ever sparked Khabib though as he had an absolute granite of a chin. It's been said that Khabib's challange for the title was delayed during Conor's reign. So, Conor might never had reached the heights he did if they let Khabib at him early on in his career. Whichever way you look at it this was a brilliant move as Conor had a massive impact on the sport.

As much as you might hate McGregor he really put this sport on the map. He actually transcended his sport which very few sportsmen in history have ever done.

Conor’s fight IQ was unbelievable. I had seen the footage of him practicing his left hand but have not seen the interview of him, saying he knew Aldo would over throw the right hand. When you hear and see videos like this you see why Conor was the best. he wasn’t lucky, he was intelligent.
