  • *Sorry for the mistake. In the video, I didn't talk about a dead syllable with a long vowel in the low-class consonants. The low-class consonant dead syllables can make sounds in different tones with short and long vowels. I have added it to the PDF file.

    Thank you so much for this super-clear explanation. Most Thai people can't explain it when I ask because they grew up with it and it's so natural for them. I've struggled for years, speaking a little but never sure how to pronounce written Thai. This was exactly what I needed! ขอบคุณมากครับ🙏

    I've probably gone through these tone rules with at least 5 different teachers/apps/ programs and no one explained it nearly as clearly and quickly as this. This is very straightforward and understandable, thank you! I took a very long break from learning Thai and because I never practiced reading enough I basically am having to start over, but this made it quicker than I expected

    ขอบคุนมากครับ I've been studying Thai since '93, and I'm just now understanding how conjugations work! It's always just been read, listen, speak, write, listen, speak. So I never understood how or why the conjugations were made. "It's just that way" I'd always get told. Like, don't ask ทำไม...ไม่รีู... ผมได้พูดว่า...อะไรว่าาาาา. So you're a major help!!!

    Whoops! Jack does well to ask us to review 9:00.
    Lemme see if I got this right-- I've been studying this all week!
    No tone-mark LIVE syllables are one category, whether the vowel is long or short;
    DEAD-SHORT & DEAD-LONG are two distinct categories, so for dead syllables, you DO have to know the length of the vowel.
    I have three 3" x 5" cards: one for consonants, one for vowels, & one for the seven categories of tone-rule.
    (NO TONE-MARK: Live, Dead-Short & Dead-Long; TONE MARKS: mai ayk, toh dtree, & mjdw. Crossed with three classes of consonant, = 21 tone patterns! Good fun!)
    Top half of card has 3 NO TONE MARK patterns, bottom half has 4 TONE MARK patterns.
    Also, if you want the best practice-partner for Thai, get a Siamese cast.
    They know all the tones, and will practice with you ALL DAY LONG & never get bored!

    • @KramRemin
      @KramRemin 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, my little TEACH YOURSELF THAI book only mentioned nasals, long syllables, and short ai/ai/ao as live. When Jack lays out (8:37) that "sometimes W and sometimes Y" also continue the sound enough to be "LIVE" syllables.
      I teach Latin/Greek, so we say "nasal/long/aiaiao/W/Y make the syllable live"
