    Super weird to see a board game play video of this production quality where 3 out of the 4 players clearly have not seen the movie.

    I would just like to say I do really like this series. While i do miss Tabletop and Wil Wheaton I like that this series has a lot more videos. I disagree with people saying that this video was cringey or had stilted dialogue. I do watch at 2x speed idk if that has anything to with my perception and i have closed out of videos before if i found them cringeworthy. I just felt there was a lot of hate in the comments so i wanted to help balance it a little.

    Looks like the popup graphic for the Mooncalf differs from what's actually in play, hence the discrepancy on dice effects.

    I dont know if it is because she did such a good job playing her but I feel statistically, Queenie is the best character to play as. None of her "Ready" columns are not too hard to fill when rolling and if she loses one which each new character, there is not much whiplash

    41:00 in most games, reroll means you roll the same dice again... so keeping one would be something on a reroll card is something I would question. Now, if it said 'reroll any number of dice' then I could accept it.

    • @nightcatarts
      @nightcatarts 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think, since you can choose to reroll any number of dice by placing or setting aside after a normal roll, it makes sense that the reroll card would follow the same mechanic.

    • @Esperologist
      @Esperologist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see the logic to that, but to me there is a difference.
      On the 'regular reroll' you are actually getting three rolls, and choosing how many dice to retain as their current result and how many to forfeit the result. Under this form of ruling, you are always using all three given rolls... it is just that you might choose to be rolling zero dice for the third or even the second roll.
      However, if the 'regular reroll' is an actuall reroll ('you roll once and can choose to reroll any dice from that roll, and can then choose to reroll any dice from that reroll - for a total limit of two rerolls') then there would need to be some specific rules in the manual. Typically (with any game) a reroll would mean 'ignore the result on the die and replace it with the new rolled result'. Thus, the 'beast reaction' would only trigger if it was kept... or if the manual specified something like 'the beast reaction triggers when rolled - even if the teal die is chosen to be rerolled'.
      After a quick skim online, I don't see a manual (USAoppoly site or Board Game Geek) so I can't read it and say how I would interpret (my opinion) the wording.
      All I can do is speculate based on the typical use of the word 'reroll' in games I have played. In most situations where the dice are to always have their results applied before 'rerolling' the rule book will instead say 'roll again'.
      I have seen some games that used 'reroll' as a 'roll again'... but they are more difficult to follow rules that may also be ambiguous with some rules explanations, so my group has to house rule which meaning to go with.
      ----
      In the end, what I am saying is that my games group has been trained to interpret 'reroll' to mean that the face of the dice does not apply until all possible rerolls have been used up. Meanwhile, 'roll again' would mean that we apply all faces unless the rules specify that they are not applied between rolls - which in the case of this game would mean that only the reaction could be applied since no other results actually trigger until the the 'activate die' step.
      On that note... my group would closely check the rule on when insight cards can be used. Because if their dice values are to be treated as rolled dice... then they could only be assigned during the 'assign dice' step and thus any insight cards gained during that turn could not be used since the 'assign dice' step was already past.
      However, if the cards can be applied 'at any time during a players turn' then we would pull tricks like holding two wild cards and then when the triple capture activates the die is removed from it... then we play the wild card to that triple capture, which activates again and thus removes the card... and then we would play the second wild to the same triple capture.
      Basically, if the rules are too open then my group will take advantage of it. We have a few games that we implemented house rules to stop some shenanigans that we thought were unbalancing.
      ---
      Now I really want to read the rule book...

    • @nightcatarts
      @nightcatarts 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The beast reaction is, I believe, an instant, immediate (re)action which interrupts everything & butts its way in there between rolls. That face on that die is the only thing which ever actually applies anything; the rest are simply passive resources to spend or discard. This means that rerolling the teal die is risky because you could potentially hit 3 reactions for each turn & you'd take the damage from all of them. It creates a nice risk/reward dynamic.
      When it comes to those insight cards, it does seem like they can also be played at any time, as instants, proven by being able to cancel that beast reaction die. The situation with reactivating can't happen, since you can only ever do that once per turn per action type (capture 1, insight, etc). Once you've activated those abilities once, they're spent for the turn.
      I don't know the exact wording of the rules, but this much I picked up by watching this playthrough & it seems to work as it should, & as would make sense (except for that issue with the assigning dice to others from an unreadied ability which they fixed later in the video & was making things a bit too easy).
      So, both your definitions of a reroll fit for this game, the special exception being the beast reaction face on the teal die.

      The woman playing Tina rolled an Insight symbol on her third roll. The hostess then played that die on Queenie's board because Queenie had her Insight readied and set. Queenie would then be able to activate the die and draw an Insight card in the actvation phase of Tina's turn. However, this was an error because Tina didn't have her Insight readied and set. See page 7 of the rule book, rule 2 - Assign Dice, the last paragraph. I would say that it wasn't cheating, just a rule error.

      We noticed a big goof. You all left the three capture set at all times, especially at the end. After using a three capture you have to completely re-set and re-activate it in all sections not just with dice. There’s no way in less than a round you all could capture it 9-10 times.

      The power of editing, my friend. Tabletop relied a lot on post-game commentary from the players, so the jokes could probably be thought out and made a little better. That left the players with the chance to relax a little more when the game itself was happening.

  • @ReikaSensei
    @ReikaSensei 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I have actually enjoyed a lot of these videos showing off different games, but this one was really cringeworthy.
    First of all, think of the point of making a video where you play a game, show how it's played, and such. You're trying to SELL the game. This particular game is one based off of a very popular film and book franchise and because its mechanics and themes are so closely tied up with that, your main target audience to try to sell this game is those people who already like Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. Maybe you might get some casuals who just like the mechanics of the game that maybe might buy it because of that too, but for the most part a lot of people won't be able to make it past the Wizarding World assets all up on the game pieces, so definitely, your core audience is people who know the movies.
    But you put together a whole group of people where only ONE person knows the movies at all or even bothered to do so much as wiki what the movie was about or who the characters were. I want to give the benefit of the doubt to people, but seriously, the interactions and side comments and lack of knowledge about the films is so painful I had to stop watching. The game looked interesting because I love Harry Potter, but watching this video was so painful that I honestly don't think I would consider getting it just because it's only going to remind me how bad this video was.
    That said, I've also really tried hard to like Becca as a host and sometimes she does have some charming moments, but what gets me repeatedly is how she sometimes comes off as having done next to zero research about the background of a game other than learning the rules. Some of these things that have close franchise tie-ups like this one, the background info is freakin' important. Maybe she does do some research, but in the videos she just acts really flippant about it and just seems like she doesn't care. I've felt this way about other previous videos, but this one was just the last straw and I felt like I had to say something. One of the previous times was the episode with Gunkimono where she really didn't try to say any of the Japanese correctly. I know it can be difficult for someone coming cold without any Japanese experience, but a quick Google and you could get it close enough because Japanese literally all has ONE VOWEL SOUND for everything, and all of them are sounds that are also in English. You can get reasonably close with just a few minutes of trying. But not only did she not try, she tried to make a joke about how a word is said, which is really disrespectful to the language and the culture, and still didn't really try even when it was pointed out to her by another player. I was glad she at least felt a little guilty about how bad her pronunciation was for a hot second, but at the same time didn't really do anything to try to improve herself.
    Further, I don't really like how she interacts with the guest players sometimes in that sometimes she's actually kind of mean. With Tabletop Wil was mean sometimes too, but usually it was only to people the audience knew he was quite close to already like the times he was mean to Felicia. To guest players he was genuinely really helpful especially to new players to let them know how to win even if it meant he lost. He would still want to win, but he seemed more like he genuinely wanted everyone to have a good time. Becca on the other hand, I've seen her reluctantly help other players or try to withhold information or something because she wants to win. Wanting to win too is fine, but at the same time it seems like she does things on purpose to make things go more in her favor. It just doesn't seem like good chemistry or fun to watch if the host is more out for themselves.
    I'm really sad though. I was enjoying the series a bit and was really trying to get through this, but I can't. I absolutely cannot finish this video and I honestly don't know whether or not I want to try to watch any other episodes from here on.

      Reika nice essay...

    • @ithalathegayguy
      @ithalathegayguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree.... the point of these videos is not to sell the game, because geek and sundry doesn't get anything for selling the games.... the point of these videos is just to play it and have fun with friends. It's no different than a let's play on any other channel. They're not trying to sell you the game unless they get Sponsored for that episode. They just want you to watch them have fun playing it.
      I like that they presented it with people who don't know the lore, because really, the lore isn't important.... Sure, it adds a neat flare, but you could reskin this game with any number of different lores and it would play the same. It's like the Betrayal games. They've got House on the Hill and Baldur's Gate.... ultimately, they're the same game, but 1 is set in a haunted mansion, the other is set in and around a high fantasy tavern. Other than the Omens, you could mix and match all of the cards with no hassle because they function the same... and the only reason you couldn't mix the Omens is that you would need to write new haunts to match them.
      Also, I don't think anybody should be expected to learn a language just to play a board game. And if you don't know how to pronounce a word in a language you don't speak, it's better to take a fun spin on it instead of beating yourself up. We have a guy at work who speaks excellent English despite not living here most of his life, but every now and then he'll mess up a word and we always try to get him to have fun with his mess ups. For example (weird one, but very memorable) he was joking about making Mint Flavored Anal Beads but he said "Bits" and we corrected him but we keep him joking about anal bits so that he doesn't feel like it's disrespectful to get a word wrong... cause at the end of the day, it's just a word

    • @ReikaSensei
      @ReikaSensei 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is though that they get the game from the makers for free. These videos are promotion for the company. That's why they make sure to plug the maker of the game. Geek and Sundry is also owned by a big production company now which allows for more production and such and means they have to pay appearance fees for guests. That's how entertainment and LA works. Even for small actors or entertainers or personalities. This isn't a small TH-cam channel made in someone's garage anymore. Everyone you see is being paid to be there. They also get business for appearing because they plug their social media and other projects. Fans of theirs will also watch because they're in it. No one in these is just friends that come over. They get paid for their time and there are contracts. The show is shot in a studio. If you actually think someone just shows up at a studio for a day of shooting at a company owned by Legendary Pictures and doesn't expect a paycheck, you don't value artists and entertainers enough. They should rightfully be paid for their time, but I also expect them to research at least a little bit what they're being paid for. Like take 30 seconds to watch a trailer.
      Even with Tabletop, there would be behind the scenes glimpses where Wil would talk about how sometimes they would get developer requests to feature a game or when screening games they ask the makers about featuring it. They've had makers come on to play their own games as well. There's actual money involved in this, and I'm just saying that this doesn't respect that business relationship in the way that it should by having the guests do zero research before coming on. For Tabletop, the guests used to comment on how they got an app or some other thing to try out before coming on and you know, do some research before their appearance. It makes the guest look better to in the eyes of the viewer to have some semblance of an idea of what's happening and connect to the audience.
      You're right that in normal situations you don't have to know about a franchise, but honestly as a consumer yourself, do you imagine yourself buying a game with a franchise's skin on it if you don't like that franchise? Maybe you are one, but realistically not a lot of people would invest in that. There's a lot of things people actually like that they would rather spend their money on. Franchise licenses are also serious business one wrong connection can hurt the brand and Fantastic Beasts is already hurting a bit because Johnny Depp is still in it. Legendary knows this, so I'm shocked that this video wasn't better.
      Also, this specific franchise has a movie coming out very soon that is highly anticipated and search optimization for "Harry Potter" or "Fantastic Beasts" is super high and will algorithmically show up on TH-cam to Harry Potter fans giving G&S clicks and ad revenue, which is actually a pittance for TH-cam. That's why Patreon and the new membership feature exists. They totally still made this video to capitalize on those clicks, but if you're gonna do it, make the video good. There are HP fans that are legit going to be more angry about this than me.
      And a person doesn't have to study a whole language to play a game, but her pronunciation was noticeably bad to the point her producers pointed it out to her during shooting the rule segment, she admitted it in the episode, and a guest pointed it out. There's a point where maybe you should pause and spend a few minutes on Google just to get it into the ballpark. And that's the thing. She was so out of the ballpark sometimes the words weren't recognizable. Your coworker makes mistakes, but is close enough everyone gets it and it's no bother. Becca was horribly bad. I've met students who had terrible Japanese pronunciation who have taken classes and while what they say is off, they still get the vowels right and can manage to get into the ballpark where people can understand the word they're trying to say. The gripes I have are even easy to fix within a few minutes, but they didn't even try. That's what's the worst thing. Just not even bothering to try and being flippant about it.
      And look, at the end of the day, I'm giving constructive criticism here. I like this channel and I want it to be better. I've followed it for years, but I'm not naive to what it takes to make something like this. There's business here and how they handled this transaction was a fumble. But normally when they make a mistake, they get a whole lot of trolls who make shitty snappy one liners and might be mean for the sake of being mean, so they can't tell when something is legit something they should think about. All I'm saying is they need to really try harder to connect with their regular audience, the people they try to get through clearly timed clickbait, and also their business partners. They really need to try harder.

      And this video was marked with "paid promotion inside" even.
      It is another weak video (half way through now) after a few that were much better. And since it is not just me, there is something going on, probably the wrong group for the game.

      That's exactly how I felt whenever they tried to play Magic... And I'm like... at least Sean Day9 knows how to PLAY, though lately his 'guests' have been extremely cringey and that needs to stop.

    I don't think you should be allowed to play this game if you don't know who the characters are.

    You know. I subscribed to this channel for LARPS. And that great show disappeared with little trace. Have asked over and over about it with not one reply. Bye.

    So I noticed a rules goof with giving another player your dice to use. In order to do that you need to have the same spell on your board ready and set.

      You're correct. I noticed the error at 21:48 of the game. If that's the mistake that you're referring to.
