I became an avid Korean music aka Kpop listener/lover since 1998. Korean and rap music were my coping mechanisms from the bullying I experienced in middle school through high school and my love for the genre has stuck by me ever since.
Unfortunately, I took a huge break from Korean music around 2015 when I was officially diagnosed with lupus nephritis and seizures; I was receiving and battling years of chemotherapy and dialysis along with taking 32 pills a day, so I had no mental/emotional/spiritual room to keep myself updated with the genre. Luckily, I'm in remission now! Doesn't mean that lupus and seizures are gone because I am still very capable of frequent flare-ups of I don't take care of myself, but I make sure to do so enough to manage and live as "normally" as possible.
When I made this TH-cam name, I was thinking from my graphic-design-major perspective of a brand that will not only describe what my content will be about but will also align with the times, and y’all know that “Kpop stans” have been a thang for awhile now so hence the cringe-worthy title, OG KPOP STAN. (My love for Eminem is also relevant.😂) ALSO! Just to be SUPER clear- me calling myself an "OG kpop stan" does NOT mean that anyone who's listened to kpop after me is inferior or less-than. A kpop lifestyle is a kpop lifestyle regardless of time. Please don’t get that sh*t twisted.😛 Sooo I am currently and actively keeping a weather eye on the KPOP horizon!

The part where she tilts Gahyeon's face up and Gahyeon gives that beautiful creepy smile is one of the most gorgeous shots I've seen in an MV. It reminds me of that immaculate scene in Deja Vu where JiU is sitting in front of Yoohyeon in the throne room. CHEF'S KISS!!!

Just to add to how creepy everything is, the songs is really about how an attraction eventually becomes an obsession, and the lyrics become progressively more creepy throughout. It's all perfect 👌🏼🔥

Dreamcatcher are always about contrast. Soft melodies with hard guitars, dark scenes with brightly lit neon colors, horror themes with beautiful attire, despair depicted in videos with a message of hope in the lyrics. You can spot it everywhere with them, it makes for fantastic art. Common among Eastern cultures, but they ramp it up to 11.

I love their head movements in their dance. It's so seemingly disconnected, makes it feel really creepy and doll-like, especially combined with their leaning and almost weightless movements. Makes them seem like they're on strings
I'm theorizing that the doppelgangers replaced them in the end. Idk why because they are in a different outfit than what they wore in the hotel lobby at the beginning and Jiu was smiling ever so eerie

Great thing about them, there seems to be an almost endless amount of plausible and compelling narratives written into their songs and videos. Other artists could learn a thing or two.
SuA rap! We haven't had it in a title track since Goodnight and they brought it back for this with the music box element. But Kim Yoohyeon and Lee Yubin have grown into Yoohyeon and Dami since then and bring... so... much. If no one mentioned, the arms crossed over their heads on BE of BEcause is making a Chinese symbol "be" meaning sadness, apparently.
There are also some doppleganger references in the moves such as Handong and yoohyeon’s pair movement in the choreo because they are often mistaken for the other :) the choreographer was inspired by the movie “US” a horror movie!

somehow they kinda gave me a lot of good night, chase me and fly high vibes with these visuals and the song itself but in a very fresh-foward dreamcatcher way!!!! I'm never disappointed by my girls, they're THE ONES 💚

For a show they went on they had to fill out little resumes about themselves. One of Handong's responses to the question about herself was "I don't know when it happened but I got muscles" and that had me floored

THINA!!!!!! Thanks for introducing me to Dream Catcher! I’m Insomnia now, for sure. Dami is my bias but I have to say I love them ALL. They are right up my alley too. Love the haunting feelings they give me. I’ve loved the horror genre my whole life. This is my first comback but definitely not my last! My kids say I’m too old. PLEASE!

To me.. This comeback mix a lot of their previous comeback.. U can find chase me and goodnight in the mid before bridge and the ending with music box, red sun in the early chorus, break the wall at the end of chorus, yoohyeon with dejavu costume in the early vids, you and i scene in the middle,, ah and many more..

Dreamcatcher are outdoing themselves here once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's adlibs is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done.
About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. One commenter noted that if you look at "BE" as a Korean written character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". That commenter is Jad Hamizan and he deserves all the credit for noticing that.
The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "You turn blue, blue. Your face is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.
Dreamcatchers always give us a banger songs.
I avoided teasers as hard as possible and I'm so glad I did because this hits like a freight train hauling awesome sauce.
This comeback is crazy! and the concept is super amazing and I like that, they got the inspiration on the movie Us and I can see the resemblance and some sounds. I just notice that Tina doesn't have an I*ZONE sticker on her wall. I don't want to sound rude but I just want her to remember them.
My first reaction was a harder version of "Red Sun." Both great songs!

This shouldn't be a surprise considering it's Dreamcatcher, but after... I don't know _how_ many times listening to this song and watching the video, it just keeps getting _better._
The song is complex even before you understand the lyrics, with loads of utterly disparate sonic elements patched together in a way that _probably_ shouldn't work, but winds up being a masterpiece. Then add to that the chilling lyrics, in which DC's love has turned into an obsession that means they'd rather kill you than let you leave... 😬
And there's the video. At first glance it's just stunning (and creepy), but even without having seen Us (the movie which inspires it; I need to add it to my watchlist so I can see how it compares), each time I re-watch it, I'm finding new references and elements I hadn't noticed before...
And I'm certain there's more I'm yet to understand. I get that JiU's turning our girls into a doll collection (nice to see Yoohyeon not being the villain for a change... 😜); Gahyeon is the final addition (with perhaps Siyeon being her predecessor), but I get the impression there's more I'm missing, and that each of the girls has her own individual subplot in there somewhere... 🤔
The choreography and the doppelganger theme were inspired by the horror movie Us! There are many references to it through the song like Gahyeon choking Jiu, them holding hands and Gahyeon's ending pose

I think this MV has a strong connection to Piri.
The whole doppelganger/copycat thingy with the upside down choreography visual, two members especially that two JiU scene that reallyreally similar in Piri, AND THAT INTRO POSE THAT REALLY SIMILAR TO HOW THEY END IN PIRI
So I think that Piri is them running from something (or someone) and in this MV, it reveals that they running from they own doppelganger. By the end, the members already replaced by the doppelganger (like that handong scene when the real one got dragged behind the curtain) that's why JiU smiled creepy-ly and the end. The doppelganger has won.

Excellent and informative review. Dreamcatcher should have a shelf-full of entertainment awards by now if there was any justice in Kpop. The best female group around in 2021.
So, if "BE" is the Hanja character that means "sadness", and we consider "cause" as a noun, that would make the meaning of this song's title as "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to loosely mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". That's very deep & profound.
“Smile when you see me, smile at me / It’s just the two of us in this dark room / If you play with me today / I’ll give you something sweeter tomorrow,” Gahyeon and Yoohyeon sing on the pre-chorus.
Btw the one who laughed at the end is Gahyeon so we see that Gahyeon is the main character.
+ they representing dolls and doppelganger (mirroring each other)
And if you see the full performance/choreo you see Sua has the strings and controls the members (puppets/dolls)
Also the Hotel remains me of the Kdrama Hotel the Luna and the Hotel belongs to Jiu.

After much thought and watching the music video dozens of times, these are my theories and ideas for what I suspect is the story with this comeback:
Jiu runs a carnival and circus resort hotel. She is a mystical puppeteer and controls a group of five dolls to do her bidding around the resort. My guess is that she is after Gahyeon who is still human and not a doll yet. Then at the end, Jiu captures her and makes her a doll like the others. It's important to note that Gahyeon is very front and center in this video and the main character of the story, followed by Jiu. Gahyeon is also the only one to really make distinct facial expression changes, perhaps signifying her awareness to the audience or representing that she's the only one still human amongst the dolls.
It has been said that the theme and story is heavily inspired by Jordan Peele's "Us" so perhaps the theme of doppelgangers has something to do with it too. I have actually seen the film "Us" and I can see many references to it in the video, even in the choreography. I think the scene where Handong is standing alone with a pink skirt and literally sees her own feet being pulled away under a curtain could be representative of her being replaced by a doll or doppelganger and that's who is really standing there and not the real Handong. If you pay attention, you'll see that the girls at the beginning of the video all have different outfits than those at the end of the video. This could imply that they have been replaced by their doppelgangers or vice versa. It's hard to say which version of the girls are the real ones versus their doppelgangers, though it's quite often showcased how there are two of each of them in multiple scenes.
Jiu also has a large hourglass that she flips at the start of the song. At the end of the song, the hourglass sand stops and so do the dolls. She gives us a smirk, and then we hear a laugh. I think that's how she controls them. When it's flipped and the sand is moving, the dolls can be active. Power over time and the ability to puppet people seems to be Jiu's powers or capabilities to some degree or she has relics that help her, like the hourglass. It's possible that Jiu needs to capture humans and then do something to make them into dolls - like feeding them a cursed apple? - or she creates dolls that she can control in their likeness by killing their normal form and then putting their soul into the doll, thus making a fake version or doppelganger of them that she can use for her bidding. So Jiu lures in unsuspecting guests to her carnival and circus resort hotel and then snatches them away for herself. One of the final scenes where Gahyeon is on the throne and Jiu caresses her face is important. Gahyeon's line during this moment is "Because I love you". As she says that line, her facial expression changes from happy to more trance-like, which indicates that she may have fallen under Jiu's power and has become her doll. There's a double-meaning here too because of Gahyeon's line. She loves Jiu, but that love may be forced or coerced by Jiu herself because of her power to turn people into dolls and have them do her bidding. Gahyeon has no choice but to love Jiu because Jiu is forcing her to do so as her new doll that has been added to the collection. This all ties back into the song's theme of having a very obsessive and dangerous love for someone else to the point of stalking and controlling them. What's even more interesting is that love, by definition, must be freely given. You cannot force love otherwise it's not love at all. Thus, Jiu seems to be seeking for love, but can't find it, so she becomes evil and obsessive over creating a fake collection of friends that will always "love" her.
I also recently came to the understanding that "Special Albums", at least, in Dreamcatcher's case, are one-offs and stand-alone stories that are not connected to another nor will they be continued. So, think of this like their song "Deja Vu", which only had one video and a concise story all within the video itself and not continued or expanded upon in any other videos or songs. It's a shame if that is truly the case with this song and video, since this concept and theme are so strong and incredibly interesting. Either way, Dreamcatcher killed it. Lastly, the capital "BE" in "BEcause" supposedly represents a Chinese character that sounds like "bei' which means "sadness" or "negative love".

After some research, the title relates to Sadness. "BEcause" relates to "BE" or 悲 ( the Chinese character meaning sadness ) + cause. So I think the title refers to "BEcause I like you" or "the cause of my sadness is because I like you." Our girls never disappoint with concept.
Also you can see in the choreo at 5:22 when they say "BE" their hands look like the 悲.
Side note: Since you like to see choreos with detail, you can use the '.' and ',' keys on your keyboard to go frame by frame on a stopped video!

For something really different, check out Dreamcatcher when they were Minx. They only had a single and an EP before changing concepts and re-debuting. I really hope that Dreamcatcher covers "Love Shake" by Minx in the Dreamcatcher style.

The marionette thing, the travelling carnival vibe. I think they're telling us why they do all this, and its the only part I understand lol. I think you're right though, I heard the music box thing too.
I also felt that the atmosphere was similar to Red Sun. Both songs have doll-like movements, BEcause is brighter than Red Sun, and it's more refreshing, creepy, crazy ... If the former color is black, BEcause is like blue gray. Or I think it's like blood red and carnelian.

Evil Doppelganger Leader SuA's verse: "It turns blue, blue. Your face is just like the Ocean View"! Siyeon and Handong: "Forever love. Forever mine. Everything, even your breath. Forever mine". Then Handong's body disappears under the curtain and a Doppelganger Handong stands there. After that, the lyrics get worst: "Would you stay by my side? Like a beautiful picture". And we realize that there is a whole yard of (formerly) living statues displayed as dolls, while the Psycho hotel shower scene notes are played during Dami's rap, and Evil Dami boasts about her catch. In the end Gahyeon and JiU become statues/dolls, while their evil doppelgangers sit in the flowery throne. And on the surface, everything is so adorably cute, pretty and bubblegum. But under it all everything is sad, murderous, insane and tragic. That's so BE.

There are two of each member in the MV. The video is influenced by the film Us from 2019. In the film, the family are on a serene holiday and are threatened by gross copies of themselves.
