- WTF DOES “OG KPOP STAN" EVEN MEAN?! Supposedly "original gangster”, can be seen as “old generation", personally viewed as “old-school”.🤓
I became an avid Korean music aka Kpop listener/lover since 1998. Korean and rap music were my coping mechanisms from the bullying I experienced in middle school through high school and my love for the genre has stuck by me ever since.
Unfortunately, I took a huge break from Korean music around 2015 when I was officially diagnosed with lupus nephritis and seizures; I was receiving and battling years of chemotherapy and dialysis along with taking 32 pills a day, so I had no mental/emotional/spiritual room to keep myself updated with the genre. Luckily, I'm in remission now! Doesn't mean that lupus and seizures are gone because I am still very capable of frequent flare-ups of I don't take care of myself, but I make sure to do so enough to manage and live as "normally" as possible.
When I made this TH-cam name, I was thinking from my graphic-design-major perspective of a brand that will not only describe what my content will be about but will also align with the times, and y’all know that “Kpop stans” have been a thang for awhile now so hence the cringe-worthy title, OG KPOP STAN. (My love for Eminem is also relevant.😂) ALSO! Just to be SUPER clear- me calling myself an "OG kpop stan" does NOT mean that anyone who's listened to kpop after me is inferior or less-than. A kpop lifestyle is a kpop lifestyle regardless of time. Please don’t get that sh*t twisted.😛 Sooo I am currently and actively keeping a weather eye on the KPOP horizon!

My favorite things about this are: every time they make scissors with their fingers for the US theme (when holding hands in the beginning and after Dami's rap break, they use two fingers to make it look like they are grasping scissors together, and they use them often, like in Gahyeon's first part), as well as how they make something in their choreo look like the Chinese symbol 悲 (pronounced like be, and means grief or sadness) whenever they emphasize the Be in because like in the title. Which is clever as hell.
Basically when they are saying BEcause I like you, they are actually saying the cause of my sadness is I like you

one thing that i find cool about them is just simply how well they work together.
it’s interesting too because you even hear the members say stuff like how this is the easiest choreo they’ve done in a while or how like boca was their hardest and such. all of their choreos are pretty hard, but their recent choreos like odd eye, boca, and scream were hard in the way that they had shorter bursts of insanely intense and complex choreo whereas BEcause and their older choreos were hard in the way that it was constant movement and a need of constant teamwork through maintaining solid formations and synchronization.
both of these types of choreo are extremely hard but the girls themselves have said how they view the ones with the intense bursts to be much more challenging, showing how the teamwork aspects of their choreo come easily to them and are not as demanding.
like it’s just so cool to see how they’re so in tune as a group that all teamwork based aspects of their choreo and performance just come natural to them with not much thought or energy required
I can't help always being struck by the sense that the "smile" gesture that Gahyeon and Sua do at different points (matching the lyrics) also feels threatening, similar to a "I'll slit your throat" motion--emphasizing the underlying sinister vibe.

When Sua sings that their face is blue like an ocean view or something its so creepy, the lyrics are like shes choking them but youre right the slit throat motion is also so cool
@@dog8068 I misremembered that section. You’re totally right. In general, both echo the sense of “I want you smiling by my side forever.” Apparently Dami mentioned on a fan call that she did a gesture during her verse meant to suggest the mythic slit mouthed woman from horror stories, so that visceral sense is really embedded in the movement language.

also in the ending pose, it's like a mirror as well. yoohyeon and handong(the 2 blondes), jiu and dami (the 2 with black/black-ish hair), then sua and siyeon (the 2 brown hair). then there's lovely gahyeon in the middle with the bright red 😊 very beautiful choreo.
also, peep the hand-holding poses, they have "scissors" in their hands
Woow i didnt realise it. So cool!
I noticed that some reactors thought the choreo was simpler than their previous MV's, but it isn't simple at all. They make it look simple through subtle butter smooth movements. It reminds me of the opening moves of the Good Night choreo where they move like the clockwork figures in a Gothic clock tower. I remember that when I first saw that sequence I kept playing it over and over because it was so powerfully creepy. I'm glad they decided to go with BEcause as the title track of this album instead of Whistle or Airplane which would have been the safer mainstream choices. I do hope they do choreo for at least one of those songs though.

I think the difference is the amount of energy they need, they don't tire as much as in others but even so the level of complexity is still high

I love after midnight but BEcause absolutely NEEDS to win this, I feel like this is as pop-y and mainstream as they can go without completely throwing away their sound and concept, and the work that went into it is absolutely METICULOUS, help them win and vote insomnias!
Thina, never apologize for "talking too much". You are a dancer with experience dissecting a dance practice, that's the whole point. You're awesome!!! Also, Dreamcatcher is just so cohesive. In every performance/concept they don't fail to look so precise. They're amazing!
fun fact (things jiu stans notice) jiu has a history of being the target of doppelgangers she's gets cloned like every other CB like in piri or fly high legit makes you think there really is 2 jius like there is "jiu" and there is "minji" the duality and how often there is a jiu clone in mvs really gets a stan's brain bubbling you know?
Interesting...... In the end pose, both blondes, black and brown haired girls are on the same position on both sides like: Blonde, black, brown, Gahyeon, brown, black, blonde.
Even their hair color match OMG
And as someone else mentioned, something's up with Gahyeon. She's the only different, with her being in the center of the MV's ending + the only red haired girl.
IIRC they did state this was the start of a new story line. Assuming they all keep their hair as is, I could see Gah being a center piece in the next story or something because she was pretty key in the choreo.
I adore how when they’re in the verses which is when they’re pretending to be nice the dance is mirrored and makes them look like dolls. But in the chorus, when the obsession shows through, they do the 3D formations and aren’t as mirrored nor act like dolls.
Also, Siyeon’s very aggressive hearts lol
If you take a closer look at 4:27 when they lift Yoohyeon the other members make hand gestures that suggest that they are manipulating Yoohyeon to move as they wish as if she was a puppet. Which I thought was something interesting and creative in the choreography and perhaps at first glance, it is not noticed.
I was waiting eagerly for this reaction. You always pick up on details that non dance background people like myself wouldn't, so thanx for educating us. It gives an even greater appreciation for these performances from DC.
To paraphrase, whoever it was, "I might not know much about dance, but I know what I like"!!! And when it comes to Dreamcatcher, I love everything about them, including their exceptional dance/choreo skills.

no lies.. it took me like my 3rd or 4th watch if they're love stage to realize that Handong was the only one lifting Yoohyeon. I love evething but the part where Sua acts like a puppeteer and brings the members to life towards the end might be one of my favorite scenes.
also.. I hope your watch them do their part change. even if it's on your own time, here or on patreon. anyway, they only had like a minute or two to understand how to do a different part of the choreo and it was so funny and chaotic 😂
Even their movements as a group, when they change formation and form "sides", reminds me of a scissor movement, the way it opens and closes diagonally. Am I making sense? I only noticed this as you were pointing things out. I LOVED this video!
I love watching your videos! While I adore DC's choreographies, I can never go beyond saying that I find them "pretty" or "satisfying", cause I don't know a single thing about dance lol so sometimes I don't even know how to describe what and why I like. Watching your analysis makes me understand and appreciate those masterpieces better 😊

Bestie! Did you notice in the beginning when the girls drop to their knees. It reminded of the Us movie when they said the people on top control the people on the bottom. Also they do the cut symbol with their fingers and the gold scissors were huge in the movie! Lol they had a clear concept. By the way my roommate is watching for the first time with me today and he said “she’s so pretty!!!! Where’s the Blackpink decal?” Thanks Thina!

Another thing they do in the choreo. Every time they sing BE. They are using the movement to create the Chinese character for BE.

the key to fully appreciate this choreo and comeback really have to be knowing its homage to the movie Us....knowing that made rewatching stuff so fun so i really enjoy you gushing out bout the connections as i dont really prefer to watch horror movie so that movie isnt really on my radar but i definitely have heard of it before~so knowing it through ur explanations was fun!
I kind of have a theory after listening, watching, and seeing the lyrics multiple times. The MV is so interesting and I really felt meaning behind this, so here we go. (I won’t be focusing too much on the MV and Choreo though, mainly the lyrics.)
So I know the MV/Choreo is inspired by the movie US and that details heavily.
In the beginning scene, it shows Gahyeon (supposed demon) throwing a bird-cage-like hold off her head. Insinuating she's been held hostage and is escaping.
Beginning Choreo, Gahyeon is shown supposedly trying to choke JiU, backing the idea that she is the supposed demon.
(Verse 1)
In the first lines, JiU and Handong repeat the idea that said person doesn't know who they really are, that there is something about them that is secret. Afterward, Gahyeon and Yoohyeong are telling 'said' people that even though there are dark things about them they are willing to be with 'said' people.
(Pre-Chorus)
"Blue, Blue, your face turns blue." Maybe the 'said' person is slowly unraveling more truths about the girl(s). Though all ot7 are playing between 2 characters. The Good, The Bad. The good can be bad and the bad can be good.
(Chorus)
There is a Chinese character 悲 (pronounced be, meaning grief or sadness. They say “BEcause I like you.” (Also, the part of the choreo where the girl's hands are above their head is a discrete representation of the Chinese character. Clever right?)
“두 눈에 가득 찬 별”
English Translation: Two eyes are filled with stars.
This is a phrase saying someone is very hopeful and excited about something and thinks it’ll be better than it actually is.
“My Serenade.” Serenade is basically a music composition type. JiU’s line here shows the situation she's hoping for a type of confession that brings her joy. (Music to my ears| Metaphor)
Adding to this, Gahyeon says, “천사같은 얼굴로 사랑한다 말해. BEcause I love you. ”
“With your angelic face, Tell me you love me. BEcause I love you.”
Along with, “Forever Love, 숨결까지 다 Forever Love.”
Forever Mine, 숨결까지 다 Forver Mine.”
숨결까지 다 = Even all your breath
An obsession. Psycho behavior right?
(Verse 2)
The second verse is basically a telling of the girl(s) telling (read: bribing) said person to stay with them.
“Pain is only temporary.”
“It is only I forever in your arms.”
“I want to give you all these gifts.”
(Pre-chorus)
Same as before, a little added.
Dami says, “Answer me hurry, Gave you too many chances.”
Trying to convince ‘said’ person to stay with them, cus if they don’t, they can’t control what they’ll have to do to them.

(Bridge)
“You can reject me, My other voice, Will call for you instead.”
“Stay the way you are. Beside me.”
“Just like a beautiful painting.”
You can’t get rid of the bad. You just have to live with it.

“I don’t want to BE.” ‘I don’t want to be sad.’
Try to ignore your dark side. Be new.

Well, *SPOILER SPOILER READ AT YOUR OWN RISK*
In the movie, it is revealed that who we thought was the copied, the good, normal, white side, were actually the bad, evil, red side. They were their own horror.
Now, what if I told you that ‘said’ person is actually the girls themselves. They are convincing themselves, trying to justify that what they did is for the good of the better. Throughout the MV, you see two sides. The red (demon/bad) and The white (normal/good.)
So the girls, represented as JiU(The good) and Gahyeon (The bad) were both good and bad. We thought Gahyeon was only bad, and JiU was only good, but that was not the case. In one of the last story scenes, Gahyeon is again seen, held hostage, but by JiU, who has a very sinister smile on her face. Finally, in the last scene, it shows all the girls, and JiU again, having the same sinister smile.
(Cue creepy laugh.)
From before, the Chinese character 悲 means grief and sorrow. There is grief and sorrow because the girls know, they’ll never be perfect. And the reason why they’ll never be perfect is that they can’t let go of the bad side. It’ll also be a part of them. They are Good and Bad.
Moral: We all have good and bad. Nobody is perfect. No one can be perfect. All you can do is be your best side, and love yourself. Don’t let the bad overtake who you are. You are worth so much more. BUT, embrace your crazy and weird side because you are you, no one can judge you for it.
So that was my theory! I hope you guys liked it. It’s a little out of place with some loopholes, but it made the most sense to me so-

not sure if anyone has said this but at 9:08 with handong and yoohyeon, like when yooh's hand emerge from handong's 'frame' arms right on the beat, it's as if she's trying to emerge from the mirror/painting that she's trapped in. this kinda goes with their lines "stay the way you are right now just like a beautiful painting". so one of them is the 'painting', most likely yoohyeon since she was controlled as a puppet/doll in the beginning, being the perfect painting (if we're just talking about yooh and handong, yooh being the perfect painting of handong).

2 months until Halloween?! Where has the time gone?! My main takeaway from this video is that I’ve been wasting my life away this year, lol
Let’s give some love to the choreographers for creating this incredible choreo: Hwang Sooyeon (@hwang__sooyeon), Kim Keeyeoun (@kimkeeyeoun) and Kang Sungchan (@ksc0213). They were the same trio who made the choreos for Odd Eye and Boca!

Who doesn't like the pausing in reaction videos? The REACTION is the entire reason you watch reaction videos, otherwise you would just watch the actual video, lol. I'm kinda the opposite, I watch reaction videos FOR the pausing, and usually stop watching when the song ends. It's not that I don't care about the reactors final thoughts, I just find their immediate reactions far more interesting. I quickly get bored of reactors that don't pause and react tbh.
