  • The new 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is a small-to-compact utility that has quickly become the best seller in the Subaru lineup. The Subaru Crosstrek is based on the Subaru Impreza platform but adds a more rugged appearance and attitude, in fact the Crosstrek has 220mm of ground clearance for good off-road capability and especially for winter driving. The base Crosstrek is still sold with a 152hp 2.0L boxer 4-cylinder engine but now, for the first time, the Crosstrek is available with a 2.5L engine with 182hp. This makes this small utility a much better car to drive, in fact this should be th base engine. The new 2.5L engine is only available on two trims in Canada, the Outdoor model and the top Limited trim. The new Subaru Crosstrek Outdoor trim comes with a thicker set of cladding on the front and side, plus dark wheels, dark window trim, grey side mirror caps, a front camera for off-roading, faux leather seats plus a 2-stage X-Mode. The Crosstrek is one of a few utilities that offer AWD and manual transmission. Most people buy the automatic, which is a CVT. The Crosstrek equipped with the 2.5L engine gets a different CVT, with two different settings, this enables the larger engine to get almost exactly the same file economy as the smaller 2.0L engine. All Crosstrek modes that come with a CVT also include Subaru's Eyesight advanced safety suite, including lane trace assist. This new more powerful Crosstrek is the one to buy.

    After considering the RAV4, CR-V, Sportage and other compact SUVs, I decided to go test drive the Crosstrek Outdoor version and even though it's a sub-compact SUV, there's ample space and the 2.5L makes a world of difference. I signed and it's on a boat somewhere on its way to Canada.

      I got the limited instead and paid the extra for LED headlights, audio and Nav. Its kinda pointless for me at least to get the outdoor and retrofit my own LEDs into the headlight housing. Plus its not LED DRLs, and retrofitting a highbeam light that is used as DRL is painful cause of CANBUS.

      Not too sure how this vehicle qualifies as a death trap? It meets or exceeds all safety tests with excellent results (5+ star) and last I checked the amount of Horsepower doesn't equal a safer vehicle...In choosing a vehicle to put in my driveway I test drove 9 different manufacturers vehicles...this vehicle fit my needs and many wants as far as options, safety and price.

    I'd say the 2.5L base and 2.0T as turbo for the higher end versions. When loaded with cargo and a family for a weekend road trip, the 2.0L struggles quite a bit. This happened when I was with a friend on a road trip a couple of years ago in his Crosstrek, he said he felt the CVT transmission slip more often than not in that situation. Its meant to carry people and their luggage, it should have enough power to do so when fully loaded.

Unfortunately VW discontinued the Alltrack line so I am looking elsewhere to fill my off road wagon need. I also test drove the Outback Onyx XT with the turbo 4, completely different driving experience with its 260hp 277fp torque. so for me choosing the Outback over the Crosstrek was a no brainer and for a round $3k more than the Crosstrek limited we ended up getting the Outback Limited XT. Had Subaru put the XT engine in the Crosstrek to begin with at the same price point that it currently sits at we would have picked on up over the Outback.

    • @niuhuskieguy

      It's not the viscous coupling, but the actual manual transmission as the cause of the lower economy

    • @kristianhermann5971
      @kristianhermann5971 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The CVT alone doesn't account for the difference once you compare relative differences to CVT vs. M/T in other vehicles. While EPA testing favours CVTs, WLTP and real-world data show manuals and DCTs still achieve the lowest consumption (less drivetrain loss). Multiplate clutch AWD systems are more efficient than viscous setups (which is why you see them used more often by other OEs these days). I'll bet Subaru is simply reluctant to invest the cost in further developing the M/T setup since they sell so few.

    • @niuhuskieguy

      Automatic transmissions in general have become so advanced they have become more efficient then manuals. They could make a manual with more gears but who wants to keep shifting that many times. I certainly wouldn't.

    • @kristianhermann5971
      @kristianhermann5971 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's what one prefers. Because M/Ts have less drivetrain loss, they require fewer gears. There's little economy gain with >6 spds in a M/T passenger car.
