    This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek, the best selling Subaru.The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has a more athletic exterior design than the previous model with a new front grille and bumper. It has 220 mm of ground clearance for good off-roading capability and winter driving conditions. We have the Outdoor model in Crystal White Pearl. It has 17” dark grey painted aluminum wheels with a dark grey metallic finish on the front bumper, wheel arches and door mirrors. With the high ground clearance and wide stance, it really adds quite a sporty look to this sub compact SUV. One exclusive feature this Outdoor trim gets is a front view camera. It captures a 180-degree view around the front of the vehicle. This image is projected onto the multi function display giving a clear view of obstacles close to the vehicle. The Crosstrek comes standard with AWD and has two engines, the base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The second option, new to 2021 is the 2.5L 4-cylinder with a CVT, 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. It is available on the top two trims. In the US, a PHEV is also available. If you want a manual transmission, you are in luck; there are 3 trims with a 6-speed manual in Canada and two in the US. All have the base engine. The Crosstrek is equipped with more advanced safety features including, EyeSight driver assist technology. It includes, pre-collision braking, pre-collision brake assist, pre-collision throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, lane departure warning, lane sway warning, lead vehicle start and lane keep assist. EyeSight is not available on the manual transmission trims. We have the Outdoor trim similar to the Sport trim in the US and for under $30,000 CAD/$26,495 USD there’s great value. Some standard features include, the bigger 8” touchscreen, all weather soft touch material seats in grey with yellow stitching throughout the cabin. The seats are very comfortable and have a nice texture to them.For an extra $4500 CAD, you can move up to the top Limited trim and enjoy a sunroof, black or grey leather seats with orange stitching, navigation, an 8 speaker Harman Kardon sound system and 18” wheels. If you are on more of a budget, one up from the base model offers plenty of features, 17” wheels, auto stop/start, LED fog lights, keyless access and push button start, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. Although when you crunch the numbers, I feel you are better off to go with the Outdoor trim with the larger 2.5L engine and the extra features like the bigger touchscreen for only $1,800 more. If you can make the stretch, you get so much more for your money. There’s not much difference in fuel economy between the 2L and 2.5L engines but that extra power makes a big difference to the drive. The 2L gets a combined city/highway rating of 7.9L/100km, 30 MPG and the 2.5L gets 8L/100km, 29 MPG. One thing I noticed about this Crosstrek is how quiet the cabin is. Consumer Reports took notice of this too, ranking it number 1 of 13 in compact SUVs for quietness. It is one of the easiest on your ears according to CR. JD Power gives the 2021 Crosstrek an overall score of 80/100 and a quality and reliability score of 77/100. CarEdge states the Crosstrek will retain 62% of its value after 5 years. It performs very well from a resale standpoint, ranking in the top 20% of models at years 3, 5 & 7.

    Appreciate your review. I test drove the Subaru Forester yesterday (and loved it). I also test drove the Cross Trek yesterday (and loved it as well). I decided on the Cross Trek because it is in that perfect “Goldilocks” zone of autos. Small and efficient enough for the city but perfect for weekend trips to the mountains and coast. Anyway, I ordered the Cross Trek Limited and just waiting on it to be delivered.
    Thanks again.

    A couple of months ago I went to buy a new Crosstrek spec'd exactly like your test vehicle. Sport in the white color. The dealership didn't have any Sports in stock, they had a Base model and a Limited model. Due to the chip shortage they couldn't tell me when they would have more. So I ended up getting an Outback. One negative thing about the Crosstrek is that no powered lift gate is available, regardless of the trim ordered. Sidenote: yesterday I went by the dealership and they had no Crosstreks in stock. To give you an indication of how crazy the used car market is currently I sold my 2017 4Runner for more than I gave for it new 4 years ago.

    I own a 2019 Crosstrek Sport with the 2.0L 6-speed manual and a 2021 Crosstrek Limited with the 2.5L & CVT. You are right, the 2.5L is the motor needed and in my opinion, blows the 2.0L away - just what was needed. At 120 km/hr the manual revs a bit high at 3,000 rpm. I love the manual you have to wring her out to get going, compared to the 2.5L with 30 more hp and much lower revving on the highway at 120km/hr on the highway. If only we had a manual with the 2.5L !! I highly recommend the Crosstrek, one of the best cars of 30 cars I have had over the years. Nice review, good work!

    Been an owner of 2021 Crosstrek Outdoor (2.5L) since October 2020... I like many things about it but a few major things are making me reconsider: 1) The CVT makes it boring to drive in the city. It's smooth on the highway. 2) There's no way this vehicle gets 8.5L/100KM fuel economy in the city. You would have to be in Super-Grandpa-Mode to even get close. I'm always above 10L/100KM and if I want to have a little fun it quickly rises to above 12L/100KM.. and in the winter with heating accessories ON you'll quickly approach 15L/100KM even while driving like a normal person. Positives: Easy access IN and OUT, great visibility, smooth highway driving where the 2.5L shines.

      @@drake5557…the Forester XT had one redeeming quality it went relatively fast in a straight line. The throttle response was too sensitive and hard to modulate , it’s runs only on premium fuel and was fuel not efficient , it had so much antiquated technology and very few drivers aides like blind spot monitoring. If you drive both back to back ( and I’m sure you didn’t ) the new Crosstrek rides and handles much much better.
      And finally change is good… new experiences are good …And you’re entitled to your opinion .

      @@gobear83 that's kinda funny hearing that. My daily is a 2005 Forester 2.5XT with a 5 speed manual. I specifically bought that car, because only 2004-2008 Forester XT's in the states came with a manual transmission. The 2004-2005 2.5XT were the fastest Foresters sold in the United States. The 2004-2005 WRX still had an EJ205, or 2.0L turbo engine. The Forester XT got a bigger displacement 2.5l engine. These cars were faster than the WRX when new for 2004-2005. The 2004-2005 cars have an identical bottom to the ones used in 2004-2006 WRX STI's. Turbocharger from the 2002-2008 WRX, similar intercooler. From 2006+ they got heavier, and in 2009-2018, CVT only. I'm assuming you had a 2009-2013 Forester XT. Those transmissions are absolutely garbage. The 2014-2018 cars had the FA20dit engine, from the newer 2015+ WRX. Also had paddles and you could put it into a Sport mode, had 8-9 similated gears. Much more fuel efficient than the EJ255 it replaced. Why would you get an XT if premium was an issue? It's a turbocharged car, what's not to be expected? If you didn't buy it for speed, why not stick to a regular Forester - even an Outback with the 3.6l flat 6?
      Unlucky for you, I worked at a Subaru dealership in 2019-2020. I got to drive all the new models for 2021. The new Crosstrek, Forester, Legacy, Outback all just feel so pedestrian. I did like driving the few Crosstrek (6 speed) and Imprezas (5 speed) optioned with a stick shift. Also surprisingly, the Ascent was super fun to drive. Same engine as the new Outback XT and Legacy XT. I have driven ever generation of Forester XT (pre-facelift SG, post facelift, SH, and SJ). The newer ones definitely handled worse, but then again, the SF and SG foresters were heavily based on the Impreza. My Forester is basically an Impreza with a hot engine and a bigger roofline.
      Your Forester most likely handled like shit, because you didn't have the appropriate tires, and I sure as hell bet it wasn't riding on WRX struts and springs, with grippy tires on forged wheels...
      Yeah I didn't drive them back to back 😂. But I'd rather die than drive a slow, anemic, CVT car that is programmed to turn the engine off at every light. Just my 2 cents, but have a fucking Dollar. My change is good.
      Also love Wallace and Gromit, good times.

      LEDs are great until something goes wrong once your vehicle is out of warranty.
      Price the steering responsive oem replacements.
      A lot cheaper replacing a halogen bulb or a harness in the rare scenario one should go.
      Halogens also emit heat unlike LEDs. This can be a good thing in sleet & freezing rain.
      Also, if you want brighter, "burn the retinas of oncoming traffic" bright there are aftermarket bulds that will do what ya need.
      The LED argument is stupid. But people want the latest & greatest so.

    • @ArgonByte
      @ArgonByte 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'd rather have halogen, personally. They are bright enough, are cheaper to replace (though admittedly you are replacing them much more often), and the incandescent light bulbs generate heat to help prevent ice buildup in the winter.

    • @rivercitymetaldetecting9854
      @rivercitymetaldetecting9854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ArgonByte I just spoke with a Subaru tech. OEM replacements for the steering responsive LED lights are $785 each + labor for install which means your vehicle will be in a shop.
      The problem people don't realize:
      "Unlike traditional bulbs that can easily be detached from their fixtures, integrated LED bulbs are built into multiple electrical circuit boards. This means that it cannot easily be replaced if a bulb blows, especially not by the average person. Instead, the whole integrated fixture must be replaced."
      Once your warranty is up if things go south the customer eats that cost.
      If a halogen goes out it a few $ and a few minutes to change it out.

If they don't hose me too much, I will have one on order today. If they get too greedy, I will walk and do something different which may mean driving my F250 as a daily driver for a while as my old Toyota Matrix died on me and is not worth fixing. To be honest I really haven't looked at them that closely, so my question is: is this an in-line 4 or like a typical Subaru, a boxer engine. One thing about a boxer engine, when it's time for an oil change it leys you know, it starts to get a tad noisy, clacking. Other than that Subaru makes nice vehicles. Yes it would be nice if this car had a turbo engine, but fuel economy is the key foe this car and the people who drive it. With the price of fuel in Canada is not cheap. in southern Ontario average 87 octane is a$1.30 a litre ,91 octane is $1.65 .The highest gas in B.C. Is probably 87 octane $1.55 a litre and 91 Octane is $2.00 a litre.My son has a Golf GTI and it cost him now about $80 in fuel per tank using 91 octane. Pretty sure both Subaru cross trek and Golf GTI have about the size fuel bladder, that might be with $65 to fill up with 87 octane depending where you live.
