  • In this episode of The Simpsons Theory, I look at the complete history of The Simpsons Comics. Created by Matt Groening and Bill Morrison, Bongo Comics published The Simpsons Comics, Bart Simpson Comic, as well as the Treehouse of Horror Comics for several decades.
In this video I go through the beginning of The Simpsons and how it led onto the comics.

I always liked the way the comics would include nods to really obscure bits of lore, for that added "I get that reference!" nerd value.

This really puts a smile on my face, seeing the comics being talked about like this. I loved them as a kid and would read every issue I could get my hands on, but kind of got the impression they were forgotten by most people. Glad to know they're remembered after all.

My 6th grade teacher was a huge Simpsons fan and had a bunch of Simpsons comics in the back of our classroom. After finishing our work he would let us read them during the rest of our class time and that is where I first experienced the comics. Ever since that grade I slowly started to become more and more of a fan of the show. Great video as always, Simpsons Theory! 😉

The Simpsons comics are a precious childhood memory of mine. I didn't miss an issue since 2001 to about 2009. I especially looked forward to the Treehouse of Horror each year. The comics were _amazing._ Their writing and humor was always on-point, even when the show itself starting dropping in quality. Sadly, I don't have them anymore, but I'll remember those classics always!

AWESOME video Lydia! Absolutely LOVED Simpsons Comics growing up. I think I collected up to around issue 150 (plus all the spin-offs), but stopped reading them for one reason or another. Kinda wish I’d continued on with them. I’m one of those who fondly remember certain comic stories and confuse them for actual episodes.
Thanks for this video - answered a LOT of questions I had over the years!

I was mesmerized when I found my first Simpson Comics at a newspaper stand in Mexico City, back when I was around 13 years old. I was a big fan of the show, but not really into comics until then. I think that it is defiantly worth going further into the Treehouse of Horror Comic in another video. Especially since a big Omnibus is coming out in August so you have a big release to point people towards. I think its such a fascinating book and the amount of talent that was brought on to writer stories.

Also, rather amusingly, at 8:43, _whilst_ Bill is talking about people mistaking comic stories for TV episodes, you show that panel of Comic Book Guy complaining about the surgically attached Vulcan ears that are all floppy - a joke that I've spent several years thinking was in the actual TV show.

Just some honest (and hopefully helpful) feedback as a new listener and someone with training/experience in broadcast journalism: You have SUCH good enunciation and you read your script out so clearly, but you need, need, need to scale back the newscaster/voice-over rhythm of speech. It is far too much to be swinging up and down like that every sentence back-to-back. It gets a bit distracting after the first few sentences. It can help to slip into some shorter, more direct sentences between those readings, if you want to keep it.
Also, if you are able to improve your mic setup, the sound quality will benefit greatly.

Comics had good stories and I was picking them up at the local store for a few months in the early 2000s but they never had many laughs. a simpsons comic story that I think would have worked great as an actual episode was the one where bart made a radioactive man fan-comic that proved to be hugely popular with the original comic's creators, and so bart almost got a job as a comic writer, but then decided not to because of how the creators of radioactive man ridiculed a fan-comic that comic book guy made.

Bongo also started publishing Spongebob comics a few years before it shut down. That also didn't find a new publisher, pretty surprising because of his popularity as well. Anyway, I'm a big fan of comic book adaptions of TV shows being seen as something more than the standard merchandising deal, and given a real level of talent behind them. Always hated when they cheaped out and just did adaptions. OH. And did you know the original Simpsons Illustrated magazine also had Hey Arnold comic strips before the deal that made it a Nickelodeon show?

0:14 Already getting my nostalgia flowing. Some of my earliest memories of watching TV included watching The Simpsons on BBC Two, along with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Malcolm In The Middle, Star Trek: TNG and Buffy The Vampire Slayer (which aired before and afterwards). Still have some Simpsons comics in a drawer somewhere and some Bart Simpson Comics (Big and Beefy Book of Bart Simpson) collections. My brothers and I always used to turn to the Junk Mail section, where we would see what topical films or TV shows readers had tried to put the Simpson family into as part of their fan art. I swear that the the episode 'Double, Double, Boy in Trouble' (where Bart switches places with his rich doppelganger) was originally a story in the comics as I remember seeing images similar to those that eventually ended up in the TV episode. I have vivid memories of the Futurama crossover being announced as the next issue in the comics although I never got to read it. Anyway, this video was a really fun and informative look back on the Simpsons Comics, a fun part of my childhood. Thank you, Lydia.

Amazing job Lydia! I learned so much about the comics I never knew! You should be freaking proud of this video I think it’s probably one of the best things you’ve ever done! Also very cool to see Warren here with you in this video! I loved your appearance on Simpsons is Greater Than!

I remember the weakest link haha, I hated it but it was always worth the wait to watch The Simpsons

I didn’t even know the Simpsons had comics, but I’ve never read any comics so that might be why 😂 This video was super interesting to watch either way!

I used to get these all the time at my local newsagent. I especially loved the ones that came with several issue story arcs like the time Comic Book Guy apparently died or that Watchman spoof.

They did very well considering they were all supposed to end after Steve and Cindy left in the first year.

That 6pm tv battle was real for me!!!! The Weakest link, THE SIMPSONS, then Buffy or Star Trek, while trying to make sure my Nan stays asleep because she wanted the 6pm News on channel 3 and demanded it be on but would doze off, and swear she wasn't asleep when she could hear it wasn't on and jolted up. After many years, we compromised to her watching the 7pm news on 4 😂 Eventually she started to slyly like Marge. That memory you shared triggered me 😂

Yo. BBC 2 18:00, some great childhood times. I seem to remember a brief window when it wasn't on until it moved to Channel 4.

The Simpsons comics are also my childhoods too (my favourite are The Treehouse of Horror Comics because they are even more gory as The Episode like there’s one that The Simpsons got eaten by a Zombie Three Bears and There even one that The Simpsons family turns into a Vampire Zombies that want to ripped you to shreds and even Homer said “mmmm…Blood” with an evil sinister smile on his face)

And I am just now finding out they ended. Dang. Looks like they might still be doing the Treehouse of Horror annual though.
