Cenepa Air War 1995 - Mirage F1 vs Su-22 (Ecuador vs Peru)

  • In 1995, Ecuador and Peru went to war for the third time in the 20th century. Area of operations was located in scarcely populated jungle where both sides had military outposts. Both countries involved their respective air forces and this would eventually lead to air-to-air combat.
Peruvian Air Force (FAP) was nominally stronger, operating fourth generation Mirage 2000. Ecuadorian Air Force relied on older Mirage F1 and IAI Kfir.
Watch the video to see if the final outcome reflected the theoretical odds.

@@showtime112 The Peruvian air casualties are well documented due to their causes, with the exception of the Canberra, which is not known for sure if it was due to meteorological problems or technical failures. Regarding the supposed "dogfights" there were none since the SU-22 carried out CAS missions, not air superiority; Thus, on February 10, 1995, 4 SU-22s carried out bombing operations in the area with the coverage of 2 Mirage 2000, but 2 were shot down by manpads, the others may return. The pair of F1 could not engage in combat due to these being irradiated by the Mirage 2000 radars. The only air casualty attributed and recognized by the FAP is that of an a37 by a KFir. On the other hand, the story of the alleged dogfight shootdowns is much later than the month of February, the official statement from Ecuador of that date attributes the shootdowns to anti-aircraft artillery and does not differ from the FAP version, often the story de Bandera collapses by itself, the pilot indicates that each SU-22 was hit twice consecutively, which makes it impossible for the devices to keep their fuselages intact, as can be seen in the image, in addition, also due to the fact that the footage is they spoiled (curious that it is so of both F1).

      Ding dong! You're both wrong.
There were no issues with Magic Missiles. It just happened that the SU-22 is made of alloy instead of titanium so that it cannot easily be penetrated when it is hit.
Russia is using the SU-22s for its ground attack operations against Ukraine and the same thing, they don't easily explode when hit by highly explosive Russian-made missiles fired by the Ukrainian pilots using Mig-29s.

The primary difference between Su-17 and Su-22 is the IFF system, and engine (depending on variant). To be honest it's not a difference most would notice and makes little impact on the aircraft's appearance or performance. Having a model that doesn't look like it's from 1999 will make a big impact though :D

Timeline of the Peru - Ecuador conflict for the Amazon Basin
1820 Guayaquil is liberated from Spain (only Guayaquil). Ecuador does not exist, yet
1822 Guayaquil and Quito are annexed by Simon Bolivar to Gran Colombia by force with no public votation. Ecuador does not exist, yet. From 1822 to 1830 is ruled by a Venezuela's General ( he was not born in Quito or Guayaquil, a foreigner general imposed by Simon Bolivar ). Let's remember that Simon Bolivar was born in Venezuela
1821 Peru gets its independence from Spain (by this year Ecuador does not exist yet, not even has a name) Jaen and Maynas are part of Peru (Jungle areas) by Independence Declaration ( Declaración de Independencia )
1830 Guayaquil and Quito finally exist as an independent nation using the new name as “Ecuador”. Chaos came afterward. From 1830 to 1860 the rivalry between Guayaquil and Quito created political instability and turmoil, like a Civil War. Both wanted to be the Capital of the new country. both wanted to imposed its flags onto the another
In 1860 finally won Quito over Guayaquil and *the country finally get a flag* (as it is now)
In 1864 Peru founded in Iquitos a shipyard (in the middle of the jungle)
*While Peru in 1821 already had a consolidated country with Lima as the capital + flag , Ecuador began as a real Republic with a flag since 1860. It is 40 years of difference*
By 1864 all the Jungle has been already colonized by Peruvians. As Jaen, Iquitos, Maynas, San Ramon, Quillabamba. But then the nightmare came to Peru
Since 1860 and during 80 years, Ecuador began to hold a growing enmity toward Peru, using the misconception that Peru took over their “amazon” but Peru arrived first to the Amazon.
With the past of the time, this misconception turns into big hatred toward Peru.
In 1941 Peru and Ecuador waged a war. After this both countries signed an agreement, but Ecuador never agreed with this and its hatred grew even more -> Protocolo de Rio de Janeiro de 1942
In 1981 Ecuador attacked Peru using fake coordinates called as “Falsa Paquisha” conflict
In 1995 Ecuador attacked Peru again. It is the Cenepa Conflict
In 1998 Ecuador is forced to respect the agreement of 1942 by several neutral nations as USA, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Finally the boundary between Peru and Ecuador is marked on the ground
In 2022 some ecuadorians still has a resentment ( grudge ) toward Peru because they think they lost something, but they never had sovereignty in the Amazon River, because Peru arrived earlier

The Mig-21 was sent to rescue the fleeing Su-30MKI instead of deploying more Su-30MKI. The original report stated the pair of JF-17 launched missiles each for every IAF fighters with 1 Su-30MKI and 1 Mig-21 being hit while 1 more Su-30MKI escaped. Witnesses saw 3 parachutes with 1 from the Mig-21 landed in Pakistan while the other 2 chutes from Su-30MKI with wreckage fell in Kashmir. IAF took AIM-120C7 old debris from Taiwan to claim PAF violated US regulation on using F-16 in offensive operation & to make others believe that the 2 other parachutes belong to F-16B trainer rather than admitting IAF Su-30MKI being shot down. PAF only deployed JF-17 to southern border because of US restrictions on F-16 usage. Excellent detailed presentation of the conflict that lead to the incident. I would suggest another incident in the Aegean Sea next to the island of Rhodes on February 23rd 1995. Two Mirage F1CG of the Greek Air-force (H.A.F.) were engaged with two Turkish F-16C/block-30. The Turkish F-16C's took soon an advantageous position and the Greek Mirages entered rolling scissors downwards following the internal spiral as for their adversaries. As the aircraft were closing the sea level the pilot of one of the Mirage F1CG's cut a split-S manoeuvre do disengage. The Turkish pilot followed ( being confident of the better G-limit of his aircraft ), but the Fly-by-wire of the F-16C warned him : "danger-danger, eject-eject" and so he did. This could be cosidered as a loss of an F-16C against a Mirage F1C ( which has very little chances to occur unless there is a clear numerical advantage for the Mirages ). Another icident between between Greek Mirage-F1C's and Turkish F-16C's took place in June 18th 1992 near to the island of Aghios Eustratios. The Greek pilot Nikolaos Sialmas trying to intercept a Turkish F-16C ( that has by far superior kinetic performance ) ,at the sea level, has his F-CG stalled and crashes into the sea.

For this reason, Banderas and his point launched the attack against the Su-22, as the Mirage pilots expected the Mirage F1 to move away, they did not enter into combat, however, the Ecuadorian F1 fighters quickly attacked the Su-22 and as they did not have warning systems RWR never realized that they were under attack.
Magic II missiles fired by both F1 fighters hit their mark, but the Su-22 is noted for being very stamina and both fighters had to fire both missiles to shoot them down.
When the Su-22 was shot down, the FAE Mirage F1 withdrew while they continued to be detected by the radars of the Mirage 2000P who, seeing the loss of the planes, launched in pursuit, but unfortunately, without missiles or combat distance. BVR, the chase came to nothing.

And it bought 18 Mig29s along with another 18 Su25s, putting 10 Su22s and 10 Mirage2000s into operational capacity. By 1998, total war was going to take place, where the mission was to invade and destroy strategic points in Ecuador. this never happened because Ecuador signed the pact and established their border from were always was. So yes, they fought for nothing.
PS: Curious fact, in 1982 Peru ordered 26 Mirage 2000 with all their equipment, missiles, and bombs complete. but the president who caused the crisis in 1986 decided to reduce the order to only 12 with basic equipment.

I think your information is not correct. Peru did not arm itself to invade Ecuador, ending the conflict (1995) although the skirmishes continued until 1998 Peru saw the need to recover its potential both in the air and on land since during the conflict the shortcomings of the FAP were noted, but these acquisitions were a complete swindle and it is for one of the reasons that Fujimory was prosecuted. During the government of Alan Garcia they decided to overhaul these planes to make them operational. Currently I don't know their status although I think I read that the FAP was looking to replace them.

Hello, I am Peruvian, but if, as seen in the facts, we see an attack against a Peruvian attack, we Peruvians lost more weapons and men, not because of the enemy's capacity but because of the Peruvian offensive, as we can see, the Peruvian offensive was 3 times larger than the Ecuadorian one, highlighting the capture of the pv1 south base, Cueva los Tayos, and it is even rumored that Twinza, this last area is Ecuadorian, but with Peruvian sovereignty, and they were given that area to bury their men and Salute your heroes, IN SUMMARY PERU LOST MORE MEN AND ARMAMENT, but finally put an end to the Ecotorian thought of reaching the Amazon River from the Peruvian side

Showtime I was wandering when will you depict this important conflict for both South American Nations....., your pre video historical review of the conflict was right on target except that the Mirage 2000's were acquired from France (Jacques Chirac) in 1982 not in 85 like you said. I was at Las Palmas (FAP) Base in or around June 1982 during a school sponsored visit and saw them first hand, they had written off one of two seaters (Mirage 2000 DP) during a training sortie shortly after arrival. They looked pristine and brand new while parked on the tarmac.
