It's getting to the point where the stores need to check ID's at the door and photocopy each one. If someone does not have a valid ID, no entrance. If someone does gain entrance and steals, at least his photo and name are on record.

If you've ever been in a Bass Pro shop, it's more like Disney than Walmart. The crowd typically isn't the type where armed guards are needed, so they do not likely have police officers moonlighting as armed security like you typically see at a place like Walmart (my local Walmart anyway). I hope the bad guys didn't finally figure that out and now start targeting them. Good for that employee for at least giving them a little confrontation, but he did not look like he was physically prepared to take on 2 big guys so can't blame him for not taking it up a notch.
@VioletJoy I worked as a dept manager at an Ace hardware, and we'd straight up chase down a thief , tackle his ass, take back the merchandise, reach in and jack him for his wallet, then hold his ass for the police. When the police arrived we would offer the man a chance to apologize and accept getting 86'd (trespassed).
The one time a little bitch tried to sue we all told the disposition we thought he had a gun and tackled him to prevent a mass shooting. That sucka fish got a counter suit judgement of $50k on his ass and his little tough persona left the chat. He started crying screaming "how am I gonna pay that!" Bwahahahaha. Then the boss took us all out to eat and gave us all $1k just because bonus. Cash in hand.
After becoming notorious for shoulder checking a thief off a coworkers bike and breaking his clavicle we didn't get another thief for 4 effing years. The businesses surrounding us kept getting robbed and stole upon but we stayed real nice for 4 years. Then we caught a guy stealing bike tires. Held him till the police came and gave him a second chance since he was just passing through. I bought him tires and he claimed he was trying to get back to another state to go home.
Dude with a broke clavicle escaped the hospital and had a warrant for his arrest. He CAME BACK 4.5 years later! He hid his bike in the Bushes by the employee parking. He snuck in through the dock and stole Bob's effing new bike. We saw on camera where he guys his bike and took it. We left a 📝 note. He came back with the police! AND CLAIMED WE STOLE HIS BIKE BWAHAHAHAHA. The police arrested him cuz he used a fake name and we found Bob's bike in the Bushes. I kept the thief's bike for a year then found the real owners name while doing some repairs and gave it to them. Turns out it was their late son's bike and they gave me $500.

I disagree. Prisons are already overpopulated with serious violent criminals. It costs an average of 24K tax dollars a year for just one prisoner. Why should tax payers bear the burden of increased taxes just because some people like you want vigilante justice? I do not care if someone steals from a store. It is not my store or my problem. The burden is on the store to file charges against the criminals not people like me. I would prefer it if police prioritize violent criminal offenders and get them sent to prison over petty thieves. Robbers shouldn't have to face jail time. Instead they have to owe that money back to whoever they stole it from. Except armed robbery which should carry a long prison sentence plus loose their gun rights.

I managed a video store 30 years ago and experienced thieves just as brazen as this. They would walk in and pick out all the movies they wanted and walk out the doors daring you to do anything. After someone shot into the store during a drive-by barely missing me and another employee I decided that was enough. I wasn’t going to hang around and get killed trying to rent movies to a bunch of thugs.
Every video store I visited in the 80s and 90s kept the actual tape behind the counter and the empty cases sat on the shelves, to prevent larceny, and only after you paid did you receive the video tape which they placed inside the case you selected.

I don't think it's so much about the people stealing, it's about the companies retaliating against their employees who either try to stop it or call the police on the thieves. The employees get fired. It's one thing to allow these people to leave with product, but when they fire their employees for calling the police on shop lifters, that tells me it's open season on merchandise for everyone. They WELCOME it.

I went to college in Chicago and like to visit occasionally. It's easy to like the video cameras on every corner downtown because "it keeps me safe." But when you think about every ball scratch is being watched and catalogued it's really damn creepy. And the cheap, easy, quick fix is an ancient solution, punish criminals. People like you have to remember something, these big companies being shoplifted now? They kind of did similar years ago with dishonest tactics which they used to push Mom and Pop stores out of their communities, look what Wal Mart did, they literally lowered prices until they were operating at huge losses just to finish off any Mom and Pop store around, and they hiked up the prices after the Mom and Pop stores were done for, no shoplifting needed... I don't get why people feel so bad for these big companies like any of them were founded on honest terms, all of them used dishonest means to destroy Mom and Pop stores which were major parts of strong communities, those stores being closed down damaged the fabric of the communities they were in, this is all by design and people are so ignorant not to see it.

Physically harming a shoplifter over merchandise that does not belong to the employee will only result in said, shoplifter, receiving a multi million dollar settlement. Simply call the police and get note of what direction, the person went in , their description, and the tag number of the vehicle they drove off in.

I completely agree with reparations, but not criminal activity. I once read from Dr. Martin Luther King that riots are the voice of the unheard. I guess reparations need to expedite the check that's 400 years behind schedule. My uncle was lynched in 1955 for wearing his US Army uniform in public on a Sunday morning in Alabama......that was considered a life taking "Lynch worthy" crime. The things white people used to kill our ancestors was and still is .....endless, when all the majority of us wanted was a fair shake at life in a land that we were not asked to come to. We were not endentured like the European slaves. The land and mule promises were broken. When we pulled ourselves up and built towns like Ocoee, Rosewood, Oscarville, Tulsa and others...... white people destroyed them. America paid the Japanese for destroying them. We suffered redlining, so no generational wealth could be achieved. We know reparations talks are just another dangled carrot. For the damage done America would need to redirect funds to the tune of what they are sending to Ukraine. I don't see that happening anytime soon. I guess we can look forward to more "forced reparations" across the Nation. I hear many white people say forget the past, you were never a slave and move on. How convenient if I had their history I would be inclined to speak the same. Some of my ancestors sold slaves into slavery.... I own that, but that's NOT how the trade began, nor the demand created. Thats why merchandise in these larger stores in Canada have electronic tags. If the tag is on the goods the doors lock...6-8ft away. Not perfect but sure cuts way back on loss.

Maybe because he wasn't sure of what kind of retaliation he would receive. He's an older man, he probably felt like it was his duty to try to stop him but may have realized he bit off more than he could chew or was in fear of being hurt or shot.
Corporate policies make it so thieves can get away with it and the employees get punished for intervening, even verbally. It makes me sick.
You can't ask the employees to be policemen. They are NOT armed, some don't have the physical strength or others don't want confrontations with criminals who can hurt them rendering unable to provide for their family. The best way is for the store to have an armed guard at the gate. Armed to the teeth. Unless it is a whole mob group....nobody wants to argue with a .44 Magnum.

Stores should hire security. Employees aren’t trained for that and shouldn’t get involved. It is dangerous for the employee, especially today when everyone is armed.

Part of the solution may be shifting to on-line commerce.
Have sample products on the floor the pay at a checkout window and then pickup the items at a delivery window. Petty much turning the store into a big vending machine.
@@melroze Move to the head of the class. A possible alternative is no carts beyond checkout. Technology disables the carts (someone else’s great idea). Purchases are hand carried to vehicles in a loading area. Or purchases are taken to an automated loading area within the store for loading by employees. Bag boys/girls can help. This will also encourage on-line shopping.
