  • Donny Hathaway's live version of What's Going On is a gem. It's a beautiful arrangement with some extra extra hits that make it extra fun.
    This lesson starts with a full run through of the song with sheet music & chord pictures. Then I go into an explanation of the important rhythms & sections of the song, including a discussion of how to solo over the song.

    Wow! Somebody made a video about this. I prefer Donny Hathaway's version over Marvin Gaye's partly because of the cool guitar playing. There's also Donny's awesome keyboard playing and voice.

    Man...I keep coming back to this lesson. It's been so helpful. Your chord voicings, the way you split up the parts and the easy access to each. Please don't ever delete this. I'll forget the chords ha ha Thank you! Thank you!

    Very well done- I've been a fan of Donny Hathaway and I have been listening to Willie Weeks since I was a teenager and I play this bass line note for note with some of my embellishment in between- So refreshing to hear and see a guitar player take the time to actually learn this tune. I have been so frustrated over the years trying to play this version because of the live arrangement and guitar players not learning this rendition of the song- Thanks for taking the time to share this video! I will pass your link along to the next guitar player I play with and this song is on the list----

    What an account to stumble on, such great work! I’m looking for chords for Donny’s version of Yesterday, any leads?

    Wow, just found this. Always loved this version of the tune. I do a mishmash of it live (Gaye/Hathaway). But your work out of it here is really fleshed out with all the nice chord stabs and voicings. Well done. I'm defin. gonna work all this in. Gonna be a challenge to sing it and work all of this in but hey....practice makes better music........ ;-)

    bro' you nailed it! I do this tune in my band, closer to Donny's rendition than Marvin's. thank you for clearing up some of those fill/passing chords that the guitar is doing that move it into the jazz realm. I love soloing over the Ami-A11 section

    Great lesson man! Clear and thorough! My only observation is that during the Bm7 of the “interlude” I’m pretty sure the bass plays E every time. So maybe it should be written as D/E.

    • @PracticeMakesBetterMusic
      @PracticeMakesBetterMusic  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you’re right, D/E is more correct. definitely not remaking the vid tho so there it remains. if you play a bmin7 over the bassists E it will sound indistinguishable. thanks for the comment and i’m glad you enjoyed the vid!

    Great lesson! What's the guitar model you're playing here?

    • @PracticeMakesBetterMusic
      @PracticeMakesBetterMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      super duper late response here - but that’s a guitar i built from parts that i gathered. i call it the telebucker
      pickups are from fralin (modern paf pickups)
      body and neck are from warmoth
      schaller locking tuners and full contact tele bridge
