      Try it. See if you like how it runs. My motherboard is just a single socket AM4 based one and it has the ability to have 4. Just make sure you know how to clear your CMOS if it doesn't work out and the system refuses to post or boot because of a bad setting. Some UEFI (BIOS) settings can do these things. I just never mess with the voltages and so when I do a setting it doesn't like I can usually come out of it with no damage. There may even be a patch for Logofail for your board. I have no clue if it actually works but I updated mine with a patched firmware for it. BIOS updates are the worst when they go wrong so get the exact one for yours and if in doubt don't do it!!

    I'm so glad to see windows scheduler is finally catching up to something that should have been here since 2003 (that is when first numa dual K8 systems appeared). Few years back on my 2x12core Xeon system I had to use process lasso to manually lock every game to a single CPU otherwise I would lose about 30% of the performance. The key here is the L3. You want all the threads of the game to be sitting in the same L3 block so they can communicate with each other trough it and don't have to jump to RAM for data they cannot find in the cache. And said data are in the cache of the other CPU cause the thread is there, well, they can never find it.
    The system has its benefits tho. In the same way you can lock your OBS encoder for example on the other CPU and in the end they end up not stealing each others cache and memory bandwidth and you have pretty much no slowdown in your game compare it to just run both and let windows deal with it fiasco.

      @@Trick-Framed No problems! It's a great motherboard if you can get it cheap. If you can get away with it, you can use the HDMI on your GPU for sound in some circumstances. Mine is the SAS variant as well so it does use more resources out of the chipset and makes it generate more heat and some GPUs might block the airflow for the chipset which may cause it to shut down. I affixed small fans to the chipset and SAS controller to make intense gaming sessions better.

    I would not say that NUMA-control is just optimization.
    It is one heck of a job to get that right as until very recently (in program-language-timescales) in C++ you had to rely on a variety of different libraries and the handling changed dramatically with different OS-versions even.
    NUMA means that there are different "regions" of memory, were one region is faster to access than others. This is nearly always the case with multi-socket systems where one CPU has direct access too the memory-banks next to it, and slow access (going through some hoops) to the memory connected to the other sockets. This was also one of the reasons why Threadripper 2xxx had such problems with memory-access and why AMD then had to release a tool to essentially disable cores.
    If the CPUs are configured correctly (as in reporting the topology of the memory correctly) then the OS can handle most of that - and this is what server-CPUs supporting multi-sockets actually do, and what Threadripper did not.
    In that case the OS will try to keep programs, whenever possible, in 1 NUMA-node, or if it needs multiple - splits it so that there is as little cross-talk between the nodes as possible as that is the slow part.

For my 480 (8Gig Gigabyte G1) its extremely more stable being a 580 than being a 480. I mean temps 15 degrees lower. To get it stable the only thing needed to be done was -2% memory clock. I also turned up the fan a bit since I care more about not cooking the card than noise. I also cranked the fan speed up when it was still a 480, but the temps were still 15 degrees higher for some reason.

    For your guy with the rx 480/580 question: Just overclock it to the 580s speeds using the AMD control panel before you attempt any flashing. If you do flash make sure that in addition to the typical device id stuff you also make sure that the memory chips in your 480 are the same as the ones that the 580 bios is intended for, the timings will be different if the chips are different and that can cause problems

    • @uzefulvideos3440
      @uzefulvideos3440 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The RX580 consumes significantly less power in idle because of a lower core voltage on the lowest power stage. The AMD driver also rejects edited RX480 bioses while it is okay with edited RX580 BIOS. That's why I still flashed my RX480 to an RX580.
      But I would not recommend to flash a graphics card without dual BIOS switch. I just bricked one of my RX480s with a failed BIOS flash.

      uzefulvideos woah, there is actually an RX470/80 without duel BIOS?!? I’ve never heard of one being bricked before as I’ve never seen a single BIOS version of the card. Also did you try reflash with it in a secondary slot (so you have a display on another card) to try reflashing?
      Yeah having to run ATI-mdag pixel patcher after driver updates is super annoying, but at least it works unlike modern Nvidia cards (for example all Pascal requiring hardware circuit mods, which I shouldn’t have to purposely short out parts on a $1200 Titan Xp just because it suffers from frame drops from power throttle even at stock with power limits raised to the max allowable of +20%... It’s so much nicer having “Palpatine mode” as I call my “Unlimited Powa!” unlock on my RX 470s which are happy pulling 300w even on air for 3dMark benching)

    Hypothesis here:
    The games with no performance increase may not be NUMA aware - meaning that they cannot utilize it even if it is enabled so they access memory across both CPUs as if it is just one processor.
    Hypothesis 2: the reason some games had little difference at 1440P was potentially that system ram was being utilized along side GPU ram to a higher extent (higher res textures). Basically that more ram was in use and the games had to “cross over” due to needing more memory.
    Just ideas.

      @@osgrov There can be a major cost benefit for those who want to experiment with productivity tasks, or solo pros (like Blender and video transcoding), but how long the crossover period lasts now with AMD advancing so quickly is anyone's guess. Atm a dual-S2011 with a couple of 2650 v2s and 64GB RAM costs diddly squat, but XEON v3/v4 availability is much lower and somehow I doubt DDR4 ECC will ever become quite so cheap. In the meantime, what will by then be old Ryzens may look a lot more sensible. I could be wrong though, with Enterprise buying a butt load of Intel server tech just to keep pace with performance degradation due to all the security mitigations, perhaps at some point when all that stuff gets sold off there will be another market flood of the relevant tech and the Chinese mbd makers can do the same thing again with dual-S2011-v3. If one isn't interested in budget friendly productivity tasks though then the utility is definitely less. Check my results, eg. the two XEON 2640s and 64GB RAM in the system at the top of the list cost less than 100 UKP combined:
      www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/tests-jj.txt
      The tradeoff being single-threaded speed is much lower, but this is something which matters less and less these days, the system handled gaming much better than I had expected.

    Sorry but the first minute of this video is confusing. Please fix it. Numa do not make memory faster, the architecture of the system is fixed. 2 sockets, 2 cpus, some memory attached to one socket and some memory attached to the other socket. The two cpus can communicated to each other via a relative slow bus. It's normal that one cpu access to their local memory much faster than the memory attached to the other cpu. This is why this systems are called Non Uniform. IF you enable numa the OS and applications become aware of the architecture and the OS can schedule processes and allocate memory for that process on the same cpu. There are tens of possible optimizationz the OS and the applications can implement to make the system work better otherwise the worse that can happen is the OS schedule a process in one cpu and allocate memory on the other processor or even worse all the applications go in this configuration and slow down the entire system.

    • @Azraleee
      @Azraleee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Windows still handles the scheduling for all processes within the VM. You would have to confine the VM to one processor, which would kind of defeat the purpose. Running your games on Wine in Linux would likely give you better FPS.

  • @andibiront2316
    @andibiront2316 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is no way to disable NUMA. Motherboards vendor create this confusion constantly with poorly named options. A CPU will allways access it's local memory faster. Simple as that. The option should be called "Memory access Interleaving" (as some boards do) and it should almost allways be disabled. When you "disable" NUMA, what you actually do is interleave the memory addresses between each CPU and tell the OS that the system has unified memory access (which is false). This means that when one CPU access RAM it will use a page from each slice of RAM on each CPU. All local access will continue to be faster, but you are forcing the CPU to access remote memory half of the time. This isn't uniform, it's uniform enough (your average latency will be the average between local and remote access, for example 70,140,70,140,70,140ns and so on).

  • @mapesdhs597
    @mapesdhs597 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's interesting, in testing a dual-S2011 board I found most games ran better with NUMA off, often not so much for avg fps but for improved Lows (though there was frequently a big difference between Win7 and Win10 in which was best). However, are we perhaps reading too much from what is essentially limited testing? By that I mean Bryan, you tested with two 4-core CPUs while I tested with two 6-core CPUs; for the games we tested (different titles), can we be sure the effects we saw weren't simply a difference in basic core availability? ie. going from 4 to 8 cores for many games is quite a leap and is more likely to be beneficial compared to going from 6 to 12 cores. In other words, you might find the differences of NUMA on vs. off could be quite different if you were instead testing with two 6-core CPUs since those games that are core count sensitive would already be less burdened.
    However, I didn't test with the Spectre/Meltdown changes turned off (just checked, the mitigations were all active - fiddlesticks!) so I need to go back to the mbds in question and check for any relevant differences (were there any specific games you found that particularly gained from turning off the mitigations?). Either way, here's the data so far:

    @BurtTMacklin-fbi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You want NUMA enabled. Non-uniform memory access sounds like it would lead to lower performance, but it's the opposite because you want the data the core is using to be localized to the memory directly connected to that core. Turning NUMA off means the OS can't see the core and memory topology and it can potentially put an application executing on core 0 on the memory connected to core 1 or 2, etc, leading to extra latency for every memory access.

    Well sounds like numa is only enabled on multi cpu server boards? My latest x79 2011 board is a top end Asus but single cpu only and I have a 4960x in it which is a about the best consumer cpu it can take. Used to always play with all the tweaks but anymore I'm more interested in rock stability rather then a few more frames in games. I mostly do video editing and encoding these days and everything sleeps till needed.

    • @soupwizard
      @soupwizard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, NUMA is a feature only on multiple cpu boards that have part of the memory attached to one cpu or another. On that supermicro board, each cpu has a direct connection to the 3 dimm slots next to it, and a longer hop (slower access) over the the 3 dimms attached to the other cpu. NUMA keeps program threads running on a particular cpu and allocates memory for those threads from the dimm slots directly attached to that cpu, for fastest memory access by that cpu. On single cpu systems, all ram is associated with the single cpu, so no fancy jedi memory tricks are needed to optimize memory access.

    • @69Dartman
      @69Dartman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, figured that had to be the case considering the board he was dealing with. I've never had a multi cpu board before but you never know considering my buddy builds networks and pc's for a living. I always end up helping him out with recycling stuff and occasionally helping with big builds so I end up with trade ins and cool older builds he gets to trade for the help. These upper end business level and high end consumer stuff are still very fast, and usually dirt cheap.

    TECH YES CITY Brother I need your help bad Bro...Can these Acer Predator parts be possibly swapped around ??? Can you lets say use the screen from a Acer Predator XB271H abmiprz 27" IPS Widescreen Gaming Monitor 1ms 144hz Full HD and put it into a Acer Predator XB272 bmiprz 27" Full HD NVIDIA G-SYNC TN Monitor would it work? OR could the power board be used in either one? Reason I ask this is I have a Acer Predator XB271H Abmiprz 27" IPS Widescreen Gaming Monitor 1ms 144hz Full HD that has gone white screen not even a year old and I got for free a working Acer Predator XB272 bmiprz 27" Full HD NVIDIA G-SYNC TN Monitor with a cracked screen so was wondering if parts could be swapped in any way. like say the white screen is caused by a bad power board I could use the other monitors power board to fix the white screen one or use the one with the white screen to replace the broken screen one stuff like that. Anyone got any ideas about this? Sure would help me out a lot don't want to mess around till I know if it will work swapping parts to make 1 good 1:)

Move all personal files (movies , songs , dox) from your C drive to someplace else . Empty desktop completely . Disable all ALL startup items except security apps . That should be enough , I hope :)

      Just take it to a pc shop if everything else that people have suggested doesn't work out for you :).Even if it does end up costing a bit of money to fix it it will be better in the long term for you instead of you being stressed out over it like I was when I built a new ryzen system and had issues with my new 3700x that ended up getting replaced but not before I spend hundreds on it trying to figure out what the problem was first lol...Some times it's just easier to get the pc shop to look at stuff instead of stressing out and spending money on unneeded things like I did because I was impatient haha.

    I really want to build an x58 system even if there is no overclocking but I'm so confused like
    If I go ryzen I feel like I have to go all new Cs you know of the upgrade path but if I do that when 4th gen motherboards and ryzen comes well I won't have that upgrade path
    But if I go fully used I save Alot of money but the problem might be that since I'm in India I might get hosed and might have to pay for customs
    And even if I get the stuff I'm scared if they might work or not and that they might not support newer games
    Or I could go for Chinese ram an asrock a320 and a ryzen 3 but then I feel like it might be better to just get all new parts
    And I'm scared to get an rx 470 since I'll have a cpu without a igpu I'm afraid I might not be able to flash back the bios but if I go with a gtx 960 it would be weaker and a little more expensive on Aliexpress
    I hope it made sense

    if you are discouraging first timers on GPU bios flashing.. when is a good time to do that?
    they wont get experience if they don't do it in the first place, right?
    more question about flashing RX 480 to RX 580.. isn't 480 only got 1x6pin while 580 got 1x8pin?

    • @Kraiord_
      @Kraiord_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The 8pin vs 6pin shouldn't matter, the extra 2 pins on an 8pin are an extra sense and ground pin, theoretically both should be able to carry about the same power.

    • @techyescity
      @techyescity  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would recommending just flashing your card to the same bios first, to get familiar with it, or flashing a car that doesn't install properly after the drivers install. Once you are familiar with how it works then flashing an rx 580 bios to a 480 is possible, but carries no guarantees.

    too bad for the dual channel, i feel your crippling the memory performance of this system not running tripple channel. Like, i used to have this chinese x79 + xeon system with quad channel for a while, it memory bandwidth was very close to Ryzen system running 3200-3433mhz ddr4, with 1866mhz ddr3, which i feel is quite good and beneficial for CERTAIN games, i mean some games gain BIG TIME on bandwidth, especially if you have sufficiently powerful GPU while other just dont give a flying f*.

    • @MarshallSambell

      thiscouldntblowmore also depends how good your GPU is and what resolution you’re playing at, eg 2080ti at 1080p would see big gains from high memory bandwidth. Some games also love ram bandwidth one I can think of is GTA v
