My first/only OBT just molted yesterday, absolutely love that spider. Holds a special place in my heart because when I originally housed her as a teeny tiny sling I didn’t notice the enclosure was defective and she escaped overnight. I tore apart my office (where I keep the slings) and somehow spotted a little brown dot scrunched against the ceiling. Sitting in my spider room now looking at a big beautiful orange spider is even more gratifying thinking how lucky I was to find her that day
Kevin McCurley of nerd reptiles had a great analogy about animals is cages and I think it works perfectly here. He said, "Imagine you are living in your home and one day Godzilla walks over and rips your roof off. He feeds you He gives you water, a great bed to sleep in. When he leaves you can feel him walking around. Some times he brings his friend King Kong to look at you. He may even pick you up and hold you. Now, Godzilla never ever hurts you. He's even nice.....but He's still GODZILLA!" No wonder our little guys drop a threat pose every so often. Great vid!
This species really gets an unfair reputation in the hobby and I think honest representation like this is important for turning it around. They're amazing animals that just need an environment that makes them feel safe and diligence when you're working with them, which, in my experience, is the universal truth for old world and new worlds alike. Really hoping that someday I'll be able to bring one of the P. murinus dark color forms into the family. I appreciate that your videos don't fall into the clickbait trap that misrepresents tarantulas like this, nor do you ever antagonize your spiders like some people. Thanks a bunch Tom.

So great to see my favourite species! Thx 4 sharing Tom! And as I said in other comments, I m with you, they are Not as defensive as many people say. I keep them for many many years, breed them, and I have 13 adult females, some different color forms of them, No one is "aggressiv". The Point is, that they need room and hides to be calm. Never would have gotten to this point without you, Tom. Please be aware how much your videos, podcasts, and articles mean to us. Listening to your podcasts over and over make me all the more confident about the hobby and make me feel less and less like an imposter. Wanted to share my recent binge of horror movies with you (it's October! Best time of the year!) and I know you are also a horror fan. - Dagon: FANTASTIC quirky little movie with REALLY dark themes and disturbing imagery. You mentioned you grew up with Jaws so while this is not a shark movie I think it really plays on fears of the unknown and deep sea. HIGHLY recommend. - The Fog: I believe you mentioned this before but I could be confusing it with The Mist. Super creepy, good atmosphere, well shot. Super interesting story as well, not at all what I was expecting. - Ghost Ship: fantastic movie all around, the beginning is disturbing as heck and literally one of my worst nightmares is being lost at sea so that played really really well into my fear and just an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness as the crew turns on one another and there's literally no good solution to the problem faced. - The Void: Again not what I was expecting but super well done. I wish more emphasis was put on the cult itself instead of just the leader of the cult but wow this one was very creepy and the "monsters" were well done without being OVERdone if that makes sense. - Silent Hill: I'm sure you've seen it but if you haven't, def check it out! Really good adaptation of the first SH game and while it definitely took creative liberties, it still stuck enough to the original story IMO. Cybil was fantastic. - Case 39: SUPER CREEPY (the child actor was AMAZING and deserves a freaking Oscar for her performance!) - The Nun 2: Just came out, not as much of a fan of this one as the original because for some reason they DIDN'T USE THE THEME MUSIC FOR THE NUN! Which IMO is what made the Nun so scary in the first place! The creepy super deep music that has played with the demon nun's appearance since the Conjuring 2 was suspiciously absent and I feel it really took away from the movie overall, sadly, but still a really nice follow up. The ending was somewhat anticlimactic and ended too quickly; the beginning felt drawn out and weirdly paced but definitely still worth watching. - Smile: Fantastically done, basically the same premise as The Ring but a COMPLETELY separate movie. The first girl we meet has the creepiest smile ever and it's definitely worth watching and I bet you it will stick with ya! Hope to hear from ya soon, and hope my gift arrived safely, but do let me know if it didn't and I will remake them! Keep up the awesome work, Tom! - Charlotte
Charlotte! Oh my God...yes! I emailed you the day they arrived! UGH! What the heck??? Thank you SO MUCH for the labels; they are gorgeous and look fantastic on the enclosures! I truly appreciate you taking the time to make them and to send them to me. And, I was super impressed that you managed to make one for all of my named spiders! haha That's truly impressive. Again, THANK YOU!!!!! Ugh, I feel so bad that my email didn't reach you!!!
Oh, and the movies! Dagon is an old personal favorite of mine. It was based off of H.P. Lovecraft's "Shadow Over Innsmouth." I love both the story and movie. The original FOG is one of my favorite movies of all time. I watch that several times a year. SILENT HILL was fantastic and quite underrated. CASE 39 was quite good, although I haven't watched it in years. THE VOID was a fantastic homage to the 80s rental days...such a great movie. Now, SMILE...hahaha I was very let down by it. I think that I was a victim of high expectations. As soon as I realized that it had the same plot as RING and dozens of other movies from that time, I kind of tuned out. It wasn't horrible, but I was very let down. I have to watch it again, though! You've got good tastes, buddy! haha
My murinus is about the same size as yours and the bronze colors are so very striking. I agree they are an amazing species and more shy than they are usually portrayed at least in my experience. Love the video! Thanks!
I saw this video arrive, and was really looking forward to seeing it. Love OBTs; I have adult female RCF, I keep in a tall semi-arboreol setting. Very chilled spider really, but I give her space and respect. If I find a Tete form, I'll get one having seen this one. Great looking spider 🕷️. Thanks both!
She's so pretty 😊 I'm happy you show how these P. murinus are not demons out to get you, people who provoke theirs gives people the feeling that they are monsters. Thank you for the great video!
I’ve absolutely fallen in love with P. murinus. Definitely a bucket list spider. That one is absolutely beautiful. I think that’s the fastest I’ve seen anyone’s spider settle back out of a threat pose too. From what I’ve seen in most videos, they’re extremely sensitive, shy spiders. Like you said, not “crazy monsters.” Mainly just misunderstood and sometimes handled a little too roughly for their sensitive nature. Not rushing to buy one: I feel like I’ll need a LOT more experience first. (My tiny Cyriocosmus sling startled me recently. Lol 🫣😂Definitely not ready for a real challenge yet!) But hopefully I’ll get to keep one someday. Idk. I think they’re probably worth the extra effort.
Hello! They are amazing spiders that don't deserve the bad rep they have. I've kept 7 of them, and I've had zero issues. Give them room to burrow and web, and they would much rather run and hide than fight. And they'll be around when you're ready! :)
Great video Tom, thank you for making a point of the fact she/he was only defensive when it was out and vulnerable, so many of these keepers love to poke and prod to get that kind of response, calling it aggression, puts people off keeping such beautiful and most of the time, when dealt with correctly, i wont say placid but, non confrontational spiders. I love Pterinochilus, and would love more, i have found my kigoma is probably a little more, ready for a fight than others ive kept but still a stunning T. Hope youre both keeping well 👍🏻
Hey, Sean! Thanks so much, bud. I HATE when folks prod them into acting up and then say, "look how aggressive it is!" I like to point out that they are not monsters; they are just reacting to a threat. Thanks again, bud!
She is such a pretty spider! I love all the baboons tarantulas they have such pretty colors in my opinion. I still need to get a P. murinus of any color form though, they are the next ones on my wishlist to get. Great video and information as always!
Another great video Tom!! I find myself correcting specifically newer keepers that tarantulas aren’t aggressive they’re defensive. I also agree about my old worlds just wanting to run and hide rather than stand their ground. I find my new worlds specifically my Psalmopoeus T’s to be more bold and defensive!!!
My obt is soo sweet she is extremely melo vibrant orange. During rehouses she just calmly walks to the new enclosure. She has never bolted and even will let me open the door while she is out to feed her. She is a decent size sub adult female. My friend has a brown one that is super defensive.
Hi Tom! Thank you for another great video. I’m still trying for a female OBT. 3 mature males so far, all would rather hide than threat pose until they had their ultimate molt. My new one (#4) is much more defensive, pretty much all the time. Stands it’s ground and won’t move a lot of the time. Hopefully this one is a female 🤞
It's a beautiful spider. Sadly one I wont get to enjoy as these cross the line for me when it comes to how(potentially ornery a disposition I'm personally willing to deal with. Thanks for sharing yours. And I, for one, appreciate that you don't unnecessarily aggravate your spiders for views as I don't watch those channels for that reason. I just want to be constantly improving my own husbandry. Your videos and podcasts are outstanding.
Beautiful spider Tom and a great rehousing video, I’ve had no problems with my P. Murinus they can be a little temperamental! Great video Tom thanks so much!!🕷
Hi Tom, if you are looking for more Pterinochilus species, Tarantula Canada (Montreal; hopefully can import without a lot of hassle) has 4 different species, including 2 Dark Color Forms - "Mikumi" and "Kigoma".
Another great video of an absolutely beautiful species, I really appreciate how you make it clear she feels threatened when she threat postures, one of the many reasons i recommend your channel to my friends who ask about tarantulas. But as you say it’s a defensive pose not an aggressive one, I think some tarantula TH-camrs can get a bit silly and say things like “oh guys you see how angry she is at me now, she is waiting to bite” and it can be so harmful as it paints a picture of an aggressive animal that really can give you a nasty bite, I’ve always explained it to my relatives as ‘maybe you’re a friend, maybe you’re a threat, but they’re not interested in making friends, and they certainly don’t want to find out you’re a threat’ my Grans always said she agrees and she’s not much interested in making new friends either, lol. Most my family have said they didn’t really think of it that way, always just assumed they’re angry buggers for no reason
I've worked with animals my entire life, and I think that it's important to recognize how our behavior influences theirs. To say that they are "aggressive" just takes all the responsibility away from the keeper. This species in particular gets such a bad rep from folks who don't treat it with respect. Thank you so much for getting it! :)
You are a good source of information dude, and great timing, another OBT video just as I picked up my first one a few weeks ago. When I opened the vial, I was super nervous, but the spider didn't even budge when I pulled the entire chunk of substrate out of the vial, with the OBT holding onto it. When I poked it with a paintbrush to coax it into its new hide though, it gave me a threat pose. So mine essentially did the same as yours here, it only became defensive when it felt like it was out in the open and being messed with. It hasn't been defensive with feeding, or water changes at all so far, but it does have a strange habit. It will grab crickets, drag them down into its tunnels, and eat them upside down. Is this something you've seen before? Like, with any species? It doesn't seem like there's anything wrong with it, seems like just an odd quirk my particular spider has 😂 but I had to ask
I'm glad that you had a similar experience with yours! They aren't nearly as bad as some people like to make them out to be. :) And I HAVE had others that would eat their prey hanging from the top of their tunnels! haha It doesn't happen often, though. Thank you so much!
Excellent Vlog Thanks to BothYou and Billie for sharing and , She is a gorgeous Tarantula 😍 🕸🕷❤️. .. She was a little gem 💎 ✨️ Looked a bit like a Incie Gold from certain angles through the lense
I currently have 3 P. murinus. They are awesome spiders. Definitely not "aggressive." They don't like being poked at a bunch but no one does! In my opinion they are very predictable. I'm a lot more worried about my psycho A. geniculata trying something uncool with me. She attacks everything that comes anywhere near her. I get threat poses even for filling up her water dish or pulling out a bolus. She won't move when touched with a paintbrush, she turns around and attacks it lol. I haven't had an OBT pull any crap like that... yet lol
EXACTLY. If you give them respect and space, they are just fine. I've received many more threat postures from my new world species as well. Thank you!!!
Great vid. OBTs are my absolute favourite. I have 3 rcf, 2 Kigoma dcf, 3 Mikumi dcf, 2 Botswana dcf, 1 tete bcf and a umv. Also have their cousins, 1 P. chordatus and 2 P. lugardi. Out of them all only the tete has given me a threat pose. I get more threat poses from my 2 inch B. hamorii which has an attitude issue 😂
@@TomsBigSpiders I was lucky seeing most of them available at the same time so went for it, received another rcf as a freebie with an order since so fingers crossed there'll be a female amongst the 4 of them! Have a great week

Thanks!
Hey, Wayne! Yeah, these guys get such a bad rep. I've keept 12, and had ZERO issues with them!
Hey, Gary! It's one of my favorite species, and I hate the bad rep it gets from crappy keepers. haha Thanks so much!
She's so pretty 😊 I'm happy you show how these P. murinus are not demons out to get you, people who provoke theirs gives people the feeling that they are monsters. Thank you for the great video!
Thank you so much, Melody! Yeah, I can't stand when folks do that, so I always try to show the truth. :)
Well done Tom🤘🏼
Thank you very much!
You absolutely are a fantastic source of information Tom, always the first channel I go to when looking online for care advice 😀
Thank you so much, Vanessa! That truly means a lot!!!!
She is such a pretty spider! I love all the baboons tarantulas they have such pretty colors in my opinion. I still need to get a P. murinus of any color form though, they are the next ones on my wishlist to get. Great video and information as always!
I agree completely; this is one of my favorite species. Thank you so much!
Hello, Stuart! I'm posting a Psalmo video later today, and I actually mention that! :)
@@TomsBigSpiders that’s great Tom. Looking forward to the video.
My obt is soo sweet she is extremely melo vibrant orange. During rehouses she just calmly walks to the new enclosure. She has never bolted and even will let me open the door while she is out to feed her.
She is a decent size sub adult female.
My friend has a brown one that is super defensive.
That's awesome! My old female was just like yours...very mellow. And, yes...there can definitely be defensive ones out there.
Sounds like you have quite the spirited one there! I hope that it's a lady!
Wow! Gorgeous coloring! 🕷♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🕷
Thank you, Lisa!
Great video Tom thanks so much!!🕷
Thank you so much, Joe!
Love seeing more OBT! What other color forms are you keeping? I’m looking into the Kigoma ‘DCF’
Right now, RCF and supposidly NCF, but I don't think that I was sold the correct ones for NCF. I've been eyeing the Kigoma... :)
Hi Tom, if you are looking for more Pterinochilus species, Tarantula Canada (Montreal; hopefully can import without a lot of hassle) has 4 different species, including 2 Dark Color Forms - "Mikumi" and "Kigoma".
Hi, James! Unfortunatley, I don't have the paperword to be able to import. That's fantastic for those up north, though!
Wow nice Tom very very nice looking T love the color! My juvie Rufilata is doing great just about 3" now
That's awesome! It won't be too long before she's 8"!
Great video. Got my start in tarantula keeping because of your videos a few years ago.
Really? That's awesome! Thank you for letting me know! :)
She's very pretty. I've got 2 of the orange ones but definitely going to be looking for one of these.
Hey, Christina! Yeah, the gold is quite pretty!
The bright blue on the bottom of her legs is stunning!!!
I'm so glad that Billie got a good shot of that!
Excellent Vlog Thanks to BothYou and Billie for sharing and , She is a gorgeous Tarantula 😍 🕸🕷❤️. .. She was a little gem 💎 ✨️ Looked a bit like a Incie Gold from certain angles through the lense
I can definitely see the resemblance! And thank you so much, Lewis!
She's a beauty, but I'll stick with the new worlds and leave the pokies to the pros! Great video Tom
Fair enough (although, this is NOT a pokie!). :)
@ really? I wasn’t aware.
Great video as always
Thank you so much, Chantal!
Love the color on this Tarantula and very nice enclosure. Hoping for a female 🤞
Thank you so much, Pepper!
Hey, Colin! Thank you so much. Man, I'm jealous...you have so many! I'd better get to work. haha
@@TomsBigSpiders I was lucky seeing most of them available at the same time so went for it, received another rcf as a freebie with an order since so fingers crossed there'll be a female amongst the 4 of them! Have a great week
Just picked up a starburst tete. So gorgeous. I really want a C Marshalli (forgive me if spelled incorrectly)
That's awesome! Love my C. marshalli!
I wanted an OBT and again not I want another one of same family … lol 😂 now I have to add this one to my list thanks Tom 😂😂 … how many T’s do you currently have ?
Definitely pick one up. They aren't as bad as you've probably heard. I currently have about 210 with 130 species.
@@TomsBigSpiders ye I’m leaning towards the more exciting attitude T’s
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, Candy!
Is this the normal orange obt or is this another colour form? I really like her golden coloration
It's the Tete color form.
I want to add a obt to my collection so bad and a darth mal 😫 gorgeous creatures but i DO have a Phillipinene tangerine
Both are amazing spiders! And good! haha Everyone needs one! :)
Is that a House By The Cemetery shirt or am I on crack?
Well, I don't know if you are on crack, but that IS a House By the Cemetery shirt, bud. Hahahaha Good eye...and good tastes for knowing that movie! I'm a big Fulchi fan.
But is the enclosure bulletproof?
Alas, it is not. hahaha
Just love the Baboons 😉👌
Me too, Michael!
Eyyyyy I've got a Tete!
Nice, Peter!
Hi tom
Hello, Mitchell!
Mozambique! My place of birth😊stunning T!
That's awesome, Miguel!!!
Great video Tom I agree they are not demons I have 4 and mine just walk away. I've been raising a tcf form and she is stunning.they do make beautiful webbing.apart from one of mine where there is no webbing at all.she has burrow and that's it.and also she out alot.i have to say yours is stunning.
Hey, James! Mine are all the same way - they just walk away. I wish folks would stop with portraying them as demons. Thanks!
I have 4 tarantulas
That's awesome, Mitchell! Which species? :)
First comment big fan Tom from the uk 🥰🤣👀👍🏻
Hello, Jake! Thank you so much!
@@TomsBigSpiders you’re very welcome I’m a tarantula collector too of 20
Years 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Good video. Smooth transfer. Spidy is beautiful.
Love you teaching about the defensive behavior
I dislike sansationalism and animal abuse for clicks. Wont watch it
I LOATH sensationalism. And sadly, that's mostly what TH-cam peddles these day. Thank you, Michael Nancy!
