I'm listening through your pod (again), and I love your educational sense of humor. My new favorite quote is, "Somewhere long ago, a person saw a gerbil and said, 'Wow, that crazy little desert rat would make a beautiful pet. I'm going to grab one for my son.'"
Tom, more good stuff dude. I just picked up one of these in October (1/2" sling). It spend the first two weeks sitting on the surface, ignoring the starter burrow, and running away from all live prey. It scavenged just fine and after two weeks, finally used the starter burrow to make its home. Now it's over an inch and nearly ready for its first rehouse. I was worried about it for a bit at the start but it's settled in nicely and has become a favorite.
Hi Billie! If the title of this channel is Tom's Big Spiders, then Billie must be Spider woman. Have a great week and enjoy the T's and the creepy crawlies.
Hey! Found you from Schizo Pelma TV today, but his video last 4yrs ago he promote you and ill go to your Chanel. Thankyou for notes about beautiful Philippine Tangerine! MABUHAY!!
Hi Tom & Billie, hope you’re both doing great. Loved seeing the rehousing of your stunning orange Tarantulas. The smaller one is so much more vibrant as you commented on earlier. But, both are gorgeous 🧡 and pretty chill for Old World. Nice to see a video again too! I know it’s hard to do saying you’re busy with school. Take care guys, and stay well 👋🕷️🧡
Hello, Joanne! Thank you so much! Yeah, I just like to be realistic with the colors as some people get upset when they get an adult and it's not as bright. Things should calm down soon, which will allow for me to get back on my schedule!
These are real beauties buddy and definitely in my list . The closest I have atm in colour( color) is my N incei gold. I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets frustrated at paying good money for dead leaves when everywhere near me is covered in fallen dry leaves in the autumn. Take care guys.

@@TomsBigSpiders you are very welcome, and you earned it it was awesome. I watch many of your videos, they're all really good and informative it helps. I have been keeping tarantulas for about 42 years now and I can never learn enough
Thank you for the information between new world and old world booties lol. I have a Blue Legged Baboon who has a thin booty compare to all my New worlds. I thought I was feeding enough lol. Love Orange spiders too!
UGH I am so glad you posted this- I was literally going to post in a tarantula fb group after watching this asking whether anyone else had experience with their O sp "Quezon Blue" never burrowing. I've had my adult female for several months and she's properly set up but nothing. granted I keep a lot of my terrestrial/fossorial ts in very short storage containers (with a proper amount of substrate but only about enough room up top for them to go into 4x4 mode lmao). I FEEL like it makes them feel secure as if they're already in a burrow considering how little light that room gets during the day and that I don't turn on my spider room's light when I do maintenance late at night so they're mostly all out but she feels different for some reason 🥴. it's good to know that another in the genus tends to always be out tho 😅. oh btw! you were originally the person who brought these beautiful ts to my attention and I NEED one because I'm partly Filipino (also I adore orange spiders) 😂
Did manage to attempt breeding this year of the pair I have so excited to do so and had it not been for Mr Moran I sure wouldn't know bout this wonderful species and such a curious species at that this female here she will venture out and go on a walk about on ur hands and she's just a chill species but hopefully this year she has a sack that would be exciting and thanks again Mr Tom Moran for showcasing such a wonderful species krpp uup the great work in 24

There are a few new world species that don't have them or don't kick them. Pink toes have hairs that they rub on you through direct contact. Ephebopus have them on their pedipalps. As for other species, it depends on the individual how badly the hairs will bother them. I can try to put something together!

Hey, Joe! Greetings from Griswold! As for T. seladonia, a LOT of folks have trouble with them, so you may want to start with something a little more forgiving and work up to one.
I’m glad you touched on feeding and how t’s with elongated abdomens don’t plump out like terrestrials. It’s the same with pokies, I can’t tell You how many times a new keeper will comment I need to feed my t’s. It’s like uh no they aren’t supposed to be chonky. Another great vid ❤ Hi Billie😊
Tom absolutely gorgeous tarantulas, I too love the orange spiders I have a King baboon juvenile and is a very deep orange at the moment, I have to have one of these O. phillippinus for my collection! Great rehousing video I thoroughly enjoyed it! Bravo👏
Tom, I've noticed some of your fossorials go into what seem to be dedicated fossorial enclosures--deep substrate, water dish, not much going on on the surface while others, this one included, go into "semi-fossorial" enclosures, exemplified by substrate that allows some burrowing, but not the extensive burrowing I've come to expect from a typical fossorial enclosure. Is this due to the issues you've had in the past with spiders burying themselves or just burrowing deep and not coming to the surface to eat? Or is there something about certain fossorials that make them more likely to accept and thrive in an enclosure where there burrows aren't ridiculously deep and extensive? Thanks in advance, Sir Tom, Godfather of the Modern American Tarantula Hobby. :D
Hey, Brian! I think as time has gone one, I've realized that I need to give them a choice as to whether they are going to burrow or web. I now tend to give them something with a bit less substrate (still enough to burrow, but not as deeply) so that they can have room up top to web. I actually covered this in a recent podcast, if you haven't heard it. At least I think that I did...the last month has been a blur. haha
These are great looking spiders . They remind me of chilobrachys with the abandoning the burrows . I have the o.sp cebu and that's often out and about these days .
I just laughed so hard about people finding all the molts in the dirt pile 😂😂😂 I have one too but they're going to find snake sheds in with tarantula molts rofl
Has anyone ever been bit by one of these? Can't find a single bite report .. despite reputation, I know a guy who owns one and says his is reluctant to bite would rather bolt
So, I used to mix it in all the time, but I switched to using shredded sphagnum moss for several years. I like that, with top soil especially, it allows the soil to better absorb moisture. And, it won't mold.
@TomsBigSpiders thanks for the info I've been passing on alot of moisture dependent species because I don't want to harm them because of mold or anything else

Whats your thoughts on vermiculite as a substrate or mix , i have some but people say not to use it because it sticks to your tarantula??
I mix vermiculite into a lot of my substrate and have for years. Back in the mid-90s, that's all everyone kept tarantulas on.
You too with the long busy weeks recently at school? It's been brutal recently 😂
Yuppir...this is my busy time of year with reports and such.
