    [FOOD FOR THOUGHTS]
    In hindsight, rewatching this 10 months later, I felt like I very much knew nothing about Economics. I just started my MPhil in Development Studies at Cambridge and I realised from my Development Economics paper that what I explained here was predominantly from the neoclassical (or even neoliberal) school of thought. And I had not even realised it!
    For those of you who are interested in Econ, just know that what I mentioned here is just a very very small tip of the iceberg. Economics is itself is HUGE, and has many schools of thought. I encourage you to read pieces by Dr Ha-Joon Chang - he's my professor at uni and I've been a fan of his work before entering Cambridge. I like that he's proposing bold ideas and criticising many elements of neoclassical / neoliberal economics that's been overused and frankly - they are very much oversimplified.
    Definitely take this January 2021 version of Viancqa with a grain of salt LOL because she knew nothing back then :)

I have no real interest in economics and lots of people have prior knowledge which is off putting. The time they give you to learn a topic is insanely little so it’s very hard to stay on schedule.

    I am a PhD in economics professor educated in the UK and USA. First in economics, you need to clearly comprehend major theories, second, you might have some level of mathematical skills when you study Keynesian economics. Third, applying economics theories into real lives is important and required to figure out solutions for social issues and economic policies. Also, when you go for higher degrees, you might decide either microeconomics, macroeconomics, or development economics, or others is suitable for you. I studied Business Economics for an undergraduate program, Development Economics at the University of Sussex in England, and PhD at the University of Sheffield in the UK. Economics can be boring and interesting depending on how your lectures or professors take initiative but usually the economics subject limits their abilities due to its theoretical depths. Anyway, good luck to my Econ students. Any questions regarding economics, you can leave some comments. Good luck again to you all🤞

Anyways, I started with mathematics and didn’t liked it so this year I decided to change to economics and I think that I made the right decision. Tbh not sure as I'm not working as an Economist. But from my past interview for a researcher role that relates to Economics (as context this one was for Food Policy and they were looking for quantitative researcher), they really seek your understanding on methodologies and whether you know your statistics and econometrics. Just broadly though. As a fresh grad I don't think the expectation is too crazy so dont feel pressured.
      One thing I learnt though, try to learn R / Python as well - surprisingly this skill comes in very handy in Economist roles.

    Which is right?
    The Buyers become less because the price spiked?
    Or
    The price spiked because there are high demand?

    • @Viancqa
      @Viancqa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both expressions are right, independent of each other, assuming everything else remains the same (ceteris paribus).
      If you want to examine the relationship then the two will look like they “correct” the market price with their own effect, and stabilise it over time to reach equilibrium.
      To put it in the crudest way, it goes something like this:
      when prices increase because demand is high (scenario 2 in your Q), ultimately it reaches a point where it’s too expensive for people to buy and hence people stop buying - demand decreases (scenario 1 in your Q), then assuming supply stays the same then there’s excess supply. To get rid of the excess supply, firms will then decrease price. If it decreases to a point where it’s so cheap that a lot of people are buying it more and more whilst the supply stays, then the item becomes relatively scarcer (more people want it but there’s a limited supply) so prices increase. And so on and so forth.
      (But of course this is very simplistic and assumes that the said market is a free market, there’s no information gap (perfect knowledge), no barriers, etc. In reality we’re not this perfect haha I suggest reading up Ha-joon Chang’s Breaking The Mould as an alternative framework)
