Cavill seems like a genuinely nice guy. It must have been soul-crushing for him to slowly realize that the show-runners weren't just ignorant or incompetent, but malicious liars who actually enjoy destroying the creative legacy of others.
if Henry Cavill gets through his career without some big scandal, and continues to be a stand up guy that just seems genuinely likeable and interested in normal things, he will go down as the biggest chad actor in history.
anyone with a brain knew they were that from the get go. he has a contract and to earn money, so he has to be involved, but no one had to watch it...but normies will watch anything with a brand. no wonder we are losing the culture war
As a fellow Witcher fan, Henry has earned nothing but my respect. He was probably the only good thing in the show and he just have been internally screaming watching those hacks butcher the source material.
I doubt people like you know what the source material is Edit: I haven't seen the prequel show. I haven't read the source material and I'm sure most of you haven't either. Edit 2: It's easy to bait Drinker hangers who can't think for themselves, and instead parrot his talking points.

I could not imagine the absolute headache Henry went through trying to keep the Witcher on track. I'm glad he quit, he was being wasted on the project, I give him props for trying though
I imagine Henry as Toby's Spiderman in the train scene and the absolute morons are the train and in this instance the train won and flatted Spiderman or Henry in this case into a find red paste.
Lauren doesn’t care about the source material. This was known in 2018 when she didn’t want Ciri to be white. She also wanted Ciri to be the lead not Geralt. She blamed trolls and racists when people objected. The article is online.
Funny thing about wanting ciri as the lead all they needed was to put in the work and put a good show. If they could get to where ciri is grown up like in the games ,they could have strong lead Ciri base on the game version
Ciri is basically the lead in the books though. Yeah, the early short story collections focus on Geralt (and they're also my favourite Witcher stories) but once you move into the main series with Blood of Elves, the books are pretty conclusively about Ciri. She and Geralt end up on opposite sides of the world and the story largely focuses on her struggles, powers and rivalries from that point on. Geralt is still a major part of the books, and the interactions between him and his adventuring party are Sapkowski's best writing in the series imho, but I think it's wrong to say the books are definitively about him at that point.
So Hollywood, Henry Cavill is cancelled because he wanted to respect the lore, played games and wouldn't pop his top off constantly. Meanwhile, Ezra Miller can burgle homes, groom children, abuse drugs, get arrested countless times and choke women to the ground. Either he has pics of Zaslav naked with a donkey or hollywood has lost the plot and my money.
Cavill cancelled? I don’t think so. He signed up for a Warhammer show recently and I’m sure he will land some pretty big roles in Hollywood. He didn’t say anything wrong, just walked away from sheety Netflix series (and I don’t think Netflix is well respected within big movie studios anyway).

as a Polish witcher fan, i can confirm that I’m indeed upset that directors decided to shit on our culture and mythology and even typical slavic look (which means rather fairer complexion) because these charasteristics weren’t „woke enough”. The ethnical background is what makes the orginal witcher unique. There is no ✨flavor✨in this new „all in one” remake. When we try to include everything so noone can get offended, the final product is simply nothing.
I am ukranian)) I really liked Witcher books cause it hits close to home, styling and all. Even tv show , Cavill in my opinion is tooo western. Should have been some slav dude, and preferably like really really slav. But Cavil was alright even though the western style kept breaking my immersion.)
these shows are not intended for Slavic audiences though - they're intended for westerners. Making the characters look western to appeal to western audiences is basic marketing - I'm afraid Americans are not really interested in watching a show with bunch of Slavs running around (we can always watch the Polish series if we need that 🤣). Of course they could've done this a lot smarter instead of mixing every culture representative possible in every possible group but that's another story.

Heck they keep getting paid so why would they care.
The unfortunate truth is that modern Hollywood has a writing problem. The problem derives from the fact that "modern" writers tend to interchange ATTRIBUTES for VIRTUES. It is a shame.
They also have next to no real-life experience to base their stories on, leaving them unable to write their characters as anything other than stereotypes.
Modern Hollywood has a writer problem because modern Hollywood has a personality problem (or lack of it to be precise). They are all sheep to the woke anarchist cause and don’t know how or what else to write about.
I remember when "The Witcher" was a semi-selfcontained, grounded, slavic/scandinavian tale of regular humans who have to live together with other regular low-magic beings and magic in itself was a wonder and rarity, and the WHOLE THING DIDN'T LOOK LIKE SOME ASS-END AFTERTHOUGHT OF AN EPISODE FROM THE NEWER SEASONS OF DR.WHO WHAT THE FUCK
The Witcher (in books) was all about living together with different species, races, all colours and shapes. It was about tolerance (or lack of it) between humans, elves, dwarfs, magical beings etc. The stories had it all - and readers known it, makes the books so popular not only in Poland, but even internationally. Then comes netflix with its showrunner and writers, use the witcher brand and making it in their own, 2020s USA-centric version... And we know the rest.
I'm Polish, and I blame Sapkowski for everything ,his greed has destroyed his work and it's inexcusable in my opinion , he was still bitter for selling the right to the books to CD Project back in early 2000's (fixed sum ,no royalties, and it was pennies) that when Netflix approached him he was more than ready to sell his soul even though he knew exactly what the show would become if he did. Shame on him for recommending 2nd season of the witcher before it came out too, most of witcher fans in Poland cannot stand him.
And all because he apparently didn't think video games were 'serious' enough as an entertainment medium... _lmao_ - talk about sour grapes! Silly old boomer...
Honestly,I cannot feel that bad about the old man. He is old, wrote some good books and yes he has a shitty character but wouldn't any of us would like at the end of their life to rip off some rich American idiots a couple of millions to live your elder years in comfort? But I feel dread if on an another attempt to cash in on Witcher the Hollywood will take his Hussite trilogy (I think this books are actually better than the witcher and it's clear he was way more interested in writing those and not the last Witcher books) the Hollywood treatment of Narreturm, Reinevann and all that historical atmosphere would be catastrophic.
Old man hate video games and this is why the success of CDPR's Witcher was pain in his a$$, but only he by himself is a guilty of this small payment. And now Netflix pays more than he received (by own stupidity) from CDPR, and thats why he saying: "how he likes this show". That's fkn sad.
I am a Witcher fan from Poland. The second I heard Netflix is gonna do Witcher I knew it would be a disaster. There is actually really old Witcher tv series(1996), based on books, which was considered pretty mediocre, but now looking back at that it and comparing it to the abomination by Netflix, that series is a fucking masterpiece. I recommand watching it for anyone interested.
Really TV show back then? But without Hollywood big budget and no fancy CGI it's gotta be a poor adaptation. You can't do good fantasy shows without money.
@@jonfreeman9682 It has terrible CGI yes, shotout to episode with Dragon, but it's still pretty decent when it comes to acting, especially since it was made here with respect for source material. It's not perfect or some masterpiece mind you, but still way better than modern day propaganda adaptations.
It is heartbreaking to see the state of Witcher series. The books are easily convertible into a show (unlike some other stories like Foundation for example), the themes of the book are quite deep, it talks about war and xenophobia and racism without glorifying it and it has multiple strong female characters to keep everyone happy. Yet, they somehow fucked it up.
Just recently saw Hypnotic breaking down the fight scene.Ppl in comms where upset about Michelle Yeoh wasting her potential. And then comes one more riddiculus thing - 1000 reasons why you should watch "witcher: woke origin".
It's funny that the showrunners who seem to be pro-diversity and anti-racism, can't even fathom that the original source material was that as well and in their attempts to create a diverse cast end up failing to tell the story correctly. So their attempts at creating a diverse world actually make the racism, sexism and xenophobia in the original material no longer be educational in the slightest.
@@Mantek430 it's a damn shame... Because Michelle Yeoh is the epitome of a badass actress, she's done majority action based roles since her breakout in the Hong Kong industry in 1985, always does most of her own stunts and overall is just a highly skilled and highly talented actress even in dramatic roles , none of these woke f**ks could ever reach her level.... She is the truest form of an empowered woman and the roles she plays are the truest forms of empowered female characters, but you can't wokiewood to understand that.
Same thing with Wheel of Time. Those books also have many heroic female characters, but the Amazon show destroyed not only the men but the women too. Modern showrunners have zero idea what they are doing (or they know exactly and fuck it up on purpose). I don't get why they hate the source material that much. Mind-boggling .
I can't imagine how Henry Cavill must have felt going on set every day after realizing that his dream job turned into an active role in the destruction of something he cares about. His contract might have been a golden cage, but a cage nonetheless.

Henry Cavil fought long and hard to keep the integrity of the story universe together, and for that he has my utmost respect. Unfortunately, the showrunners and writers had other ideas, and ran the show into the ground from the start with malicious intent.
It amazes me that they can score an absolute unicorn of a lead actor like Henry Cavil, with the perfect look, the perfect acting chops and absolute love for the source material, and piss that all away because they just can't get over their hate boner for the fanbase and their obsession with woke politics.
It's an ideology that colors the way they see the world. They're genuinely trying to make what they see as the best show possible, and can't understand why people aren't responding to it. They can't create characters these days without trying to ingratiate themselves to pressure groups by adding labels to them. A good character shouldn't be based on ethnicity, gender, able-bodiedness, or sexual orientation. Memorable characters are that way because of how they act, not what they look like.

Can we have our own characters please? I’m an old ass Caribbean woman and I fucking love the Witcher books in all their Slavic glory and the games for bringing my favorite characters to life. The books are unique for their complex and deeply flawed female characters and remain a testament to the lasting impact of the women who helped rebuild Poland after the war. Their influence is all over those books. It’s also refreshing to see a stoic, strong yet genuinely good male character with depth and charisma. I crave seeing people that look like me and my family in more entertainment but we deserve our own stories and the fans of these stories want to celebrate what makes them uniquely Polish. This pandering is basically corporate trolling as a marketing ploy and unfairly makes these actors take the brunt of manufactured rage for no good reason than free publicity.
I’m Black American and if goofy Hollywood wanted to do a new series about Shaka Zulu and Shaka was replaced by a slender female character who could easily defeat 15 strong men in 55 seconds and many characters in the Zulu nation were white dudes and LGBT people I wouldn’t watch that BULLSHYT
I have the feeling that the only good parts from the first seasons of Witcher (that stayed true to the book) were only there because Cavill fought for them. But Blood Origin is reminding me too much of Rings of Power ... and that scares me

Yes. I cared a little bit about the Yennifer parts and got slightly intrigued about Ciri - but it was Henry who single-handedly carried the show and I was looking forward to every of his scenes and fights.
Yeah I was interested in the monsters and the fight scenes after I saw the story was shit and the looks of yen, triss, fringilla etc. Straight up skipped the yen storyline.
My biggest issue is that they portrayed the elves as humans…. Yes humans…. The source material that they ignored does clue us in on how they should act.
I really hate modern day writers portray elves as nothing more than diverse human with pointy ears. To me elves are always the most beautiful being created with slender built and skin as pale as silver, or ivory. Yeap, that sound just like Tolkien's elves, but I get that illusion from other sources.
I would like a show all about African, Asian, South American, or Middle Eastern ancient lore. I like learning about other cultures and it would never occur to me to question that a show specifically dedicated to a specific people when travel was extremely limited would largely only contain those people. If they want to make a futuristic story where travel is extremely common, I would find it completely believable to have a cast of characters of varying races. I just want it all to be realistic and logical and I don't want to be told constantly that the only reason I want things this way is because I'm racist and misogynistic.
I'm still waiting for a proper Mwindo (as I believe it's written), it's a really cool story from Africa, with an AWESOME lesson about knowing you're a badass BUT not overestimating yourself. You'd think Hollywood would love it too, he's abandoned by his father and raised by his aunt.
I'd even be interested to see some futuristic story with a lot diversity, in the sense that different people groups have mingled to the degree that they've achieved a new level of homogeneity. Having a wide variety of distinctly different ethnicities really only makes sense in a time period of heightened travel, closely following a long period of severe segregation.
“I don’t get it! We fixed all problematic aspects of the source material and adapted it for modern audiences, why does everyone hate us!?” - The dimwits that made this abomination and chased away Henry Cavil.
a) the writers wouldn't recognise a good story if someone inscribed it a series of stone tablets and dropped them on the writer's head b) the writers: 'who cares bout the story or the characters, The Message is the important thing!'
The part that kept weirdly bugging me was how the musician/elf kept using small daggers in pitched battles. I don't care what kind of kung-fu they're going to pretend she knows, the first guy with a full sized sword, axe or spear and has a basic knowledge of how to use it is going to straight-up body her.
It could be that she doesn't want to fight but she brings some stuff of small size(so that it can be kept in the instrument an pass inspections unnoticed) with her so that she can defend herserlf at least
to be fair it is fantasy. it's not suppose to be real life weapon simulation tactics. it's more like a dungeons and dragons campaign where you could make a effective dagger user. i know the witcher is somewhat realistic when it comes to medieval weaponry but this show barely has anything to do with the title it has.
If you look close at this it shows none of the characters gets any dirt, grime, soot or shmegma on them from battle at all. These strong female and strong diverse female characters are so strong that not even dust can settle on their stunning and brave faces.
First and foremost - if you have a source material full of Celtic and Slavic influences that is loved by people, you leave the Celtic and Slavic influences in the adaptation, obviously. They even had a full soundtrack from the games ready to use as an inspiration. 😢
Where did u found slavic influence in source material? According to pan Andrzej Sapkowski, witcher is no slavic at all, it has a lot of scandinavian and europe mythology
@@MrSlavikua influence can be subtle, I never said it’s fundamentally Slavic. I read the books of the Witcher series. It was impressive how much Henry remembered and even said the same lines word by word as the book did sometimes. It hurt how much they butchered some of the characters from the book. The one that hurt me the most was the beast man from the season 2. He was my favorite character who was the first to be in the first Witcher book. Here they made him a pussy. I was so mad how they also butchered Lydia. She wasnt just any villain. No need to brood about it - these shows are targeted for no audience. Just create something to have something, paychecks, move on. Almost like we didn't expect anyone to watch it.

Game of thrones had diversity, there were strong male characters, strong female characters, light skin characters, black characters, disabled characters (the hound's burned face, Tyrion being a dwarf, Jamie losing his hand, Theon...), we had Brienne, a really tall/big woman who got bullied because of her height, we had gay/bisexual characters, but did it ever feel forced? no. Did it feel annoying? no. Was it the characters' only personality trait? no. That's because the story was great, and the characters were so well-written. Diversity is never a problem when it's well executed and when it's a subtle detail that doesn't change the whole direction of the story
GoT did what this series _should've_ done: Give every region its own ethnic makeup, so all the different places and people are distinct and recognizable. Hilariously enough, this makes the show more diverse than these explicitly diverse "Every place looks the same" shows
This's spot on, plus GOT's writters didn't fulfill the need to get any representative character a "I'm the best" screen time, even to the point any distinctive character arc isn't to be found. . For example (as much spoiler-free as possible) Renly isn't interesting because he just kills every characters in his way with the left hand, while the right one is busy opening a Pepsy can then putting in to his mouth. He is interesting because...of the way he behaves, and specifically the way he interacts with other characters. . But even those simple story tricks look like flying way above the head of actual majors' movie-makers.
I am from Poland. I watch the very first Witcher adaptation with Polish actors (early 2000s). Back then I thought that it looked cheesy, but now I think it was the most faithful and so far the best Witcher adaptation. Just because it says production is made by Americans and has big names ( Although I think Henry Cavil was the best actor of modern series along with Jaskier, Ciri and Yennefer), does not mean good quality. What I liked about the Polish production, is that I felt immersed in the world the series has portrayed. And the Jaskier songs (voiced by Zbigniew Zamachowski) were fantastic. However it was the scene of Pavetta's rage where I felt the full magic of the show.
Oh jeah i did a Review about that one ony Channel it speaks volumes about todays careless media that the stuff 10-20 years ago with low Budget and cheesy acting is still more faithfull to the source material than what comes out today. The best thing about the Netflix Adaptation was gerald and now he is gone so now the show lost all legit claim to the witcher Franchise
I defend that series and love it to this day. Yeah, the practical effects and cgi are terrible and they left out or mixed up a lot of stuff from the books. But the atmosphere, the actors, the immersion, and the music are absolutely great. And Michał is unmatched as Geralt. Pity. So many millions spent by the Americans and the result is terrible. ( zdraví Pepík z Čech : ) )
I agree, saw that adaptation on TH-cam back when it was still available and I think it is far more convincing and faithful to the source material than any of the games, not to mention Netflix adaptations. It is easy to laugh today at practical effects in TV show from central-european country 20 years ago. Look at the western TV shows from the 90s. Michal was great as Geralt. I think anyway that short stories and novellas from early Sapkowski work are his best works, and maybe the first novel. But even from his later bloated and chaotic novels it is possible to get enough good material to have a decent show. But no one seems to want that.
I’m so sorry that this has happened to the Witcher, just remember that there are actually Witcher fans who have read the books and played the games in other parts in the world
Poland here ;p Well, the most funny thing here is a fact that original Sapkowski stories were talking about racism and prejudice from totally different perspective than typical contemporary piece of art, so a reader/watcher could think: oh, this prejudice is so artificial, they look/think basically the same. But noooo... lets tell once again a story about Driving Miss Daisy. Also, yeah, it is possible to tell a diverse racial story even in historical medieval settings. Just look at the Cordoba or Constantinople where you could find people from any known corner of the world. But even then, they would be divided by guilds, houses, districts, temples, functions (military), not put all together as McDonald at the friday evening -_-
@@polarvortex6601 yes, always, because now Slavs are POC'S apparently. Use this when they try to say the story was "too white". Just say, "the story is polish, poles are slavs, and slavs are POC'S. Stop being racist" to those morons who make everything racial

I've long lost my hopes for the future of tv and cinema. The product can only be as good as the passion that is involved in creating it. If you take a huge shit on lore you're only insulting the people you want to attract. Henry Cavill was the only person it seems who was so very passionate to bring the witcher to life and even hoping to bring it to the attention of those who do not know it. But money is all that matters to the people in charge and it's killing the very thing they live off of. It's quite a sad sight to behold indeed.
Latin American here. Anyway, not sure, it seems most "woke" people only care about the message. Or maybe they are just so deluded/brainwashed from living in a bubble that they think most people like "woke" garbage. When in reality most people in the planet actively dislike it.
You could have ethnically distinct countries, with a sprinkling of other races, from other areas, traders and whatever, but if you must have a diverse cast all in one place, here's a thought, why not have lots of the story set in port cities, or crossroads on trade routes, where the different races converge. Which usually makes for a interesting setting, for deceits, double crosses and heroism, and shady dealing in back street bars. Istanbul sort of thing, I'm not a writer or anything, but you know, it just might work visually and plot wise.
In terms of the “diversity” you mentioned in every geographical area, they did the same thing with The Wheel of Time. In the first episode they are in The Two Rivers, which is a majorly secluded area which rarely gets visitors and the area has an ancient history. The book even describes what a Two Rivers person looks like and describes how weird it is that one of them looks different. It’s a major plot point in the book, because obviously this character did not originally hail from the Two Rivers. However, in the show it’s just a “diverse” hodgepodge. It literally made 0 sense.
You could tell that show would be trash the second you saw the casting, well really even before that when they put out the description of the show and it had the most feminist interpretation of the world of WOT possible. Ethnic conflict is an enormous recurring story point within the books and Rand being Aiel is also a core plot point. Having the two Rivers look like LA is retarded, It would be like having a show about some isolated town in NH or Maine and have it being racially diverse, it makes absolutely no sense.
@@watariovids1645 yup. But they had to check the diversity box. I quit watching about 5 min into episode 3. I couldn’t watch such a disgrace to Robert Jordan’s work.
“As long as it’s not important to the story” explains like you pointed out. Them- You guys are just racist or they don’t always have to follow the story.
Much appreciate you choosing to include some of the more tolerable scenes from S1 in this to get us through it, Drinker. You're a far more considerate fellow than the show writers who decided to hijack the popularity and excellence of good source material because their terrible story lines can't stand without something to parasitize.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the witcher world completely devoid of magic until the Conjuction of Spheres brought it there along with monsters and Humans? So how can a sorcerer even exist prior to the conjuction and cause it? So what is it: Are they making a ridiculously predictable "twist" that this isn't the world of The Witcher, but the world from which the Wild Hunt comes from, or are they once again ignoring the established lore for their own convenience? Either way sucks...
They are just not even interested in their own lore. They basically made up that there is "magic" and "chaos magic" which is supposed to be stronger somehow and comes from another world. Which is weird because in the actual series they only ever talk about "chaos magic" but there is literally no difference aside from "fire".
That's what I was thinking. I thought the non-humans and monsters went to the human world during some event. (I can't really remember its been awhile since I looked at witcher lore)
@@Kamo442 I mean they are right in the idea that humans came to the world of elves and dwarfs. That's why they are called "Elder races" because they lived there before. Monsters also came TO the world (which makes sense because they just cross). Though it isn't said that there were NO monsters before since you could argue whats the difference between monster and animal? I am not sure anymore if the books also said that this conjunction introduced magic to the world in general or just to humans (since I guess the idea is that these humans came from our world). I feel like both interpretations would be fair. Just stick with one and don't mix them up like they did in the show. Only other important point is that elves from the Witcher world also traveled to another world which are then the Aen Elle
You also forgot to mention the part where Witchers were created from human kids that were experimented on for years and years first by the wizards from the Rissberg order and then by the expert mutagenists Idarran, Malaspina and Alazur, all a long time AFTER the conjunction of the spheres....whereas in this shitshow the first "witcher" is an elf that drank a reinforced mojito and then did the oompa loompa bdsm dance with some monster entrails
Haha good joke thinking the writers even know what the conjunction is, or how magic appeared. They know it's a medieval fantasy product so go to their Hollywood definition of medieval fantasy and just use that info, they don't care about little things like franchise lore
I loved the part where the dwarf marched into the city with the others disguised in the armor of a soldier they killed. No one on their side seemed to think that might be a bad idea and no one in the city seemed to notice the three-foot elf in the formation.
The problem is not about the city but about the other guards, since they mostly know their collegues (i think) they should know that in the army there is no dwarf or something, but most of the times other guards are usually killed almost right away so they don't even have time to point it out
You can always find explanations, for an example that she was overlooked easily in the crowd and once in the city it’s too late, probably most people at the time not being smart by the way to make the connection and yell out 😂
Also, I was like, how did there just happen to be a uniform that conveniently fit the dwarf?Where did it come from? There weren’t any dwarfs in the original army. 🤷🏾♀️

I think a lesson we're all learning is that if you own a particular successful intellectual property, don't sell it to Hollywood unless the give you total creative control. Or just don't sell it at all.
The bad thing is that you have to fight like hell to keep an IP in your possession, apparently the system is designed to steal them from you if you don't sell it or put it in someone's else's hands eventually
I feel bad for Henry he is an amazing actor and loves the source material of the shows he wants to work on that Hollywood's wokeness just ruins it for him and he hates he can't do anything about it, can't wait for his WarHammer 40k series that he is heading
Do recall that the other show Drinker bases on IS from Amazon like 40k will be. So let us temper our expectations considerably. I'm hoping he'll get 40k back on track to being a Satire piece, the over the top seriousness from the fanbase has gotten a bit too idiotic lately.
Give this man a lead role in a different medieval fantasy show. He's perfect for these and it's greatly disappointing that his talents are wasted on Netflix' The Witcher.
I'm huge Witcher fan. I'm from Poland, so to me this series is very personal and close. I watch polish serial Witcher when I was a little kid with my brother and my uncle. @@philipmocny6768 look if anything is better then Netflix Witcher (or most of the Hollywood to be exact) or any movie that currently being made in my homeland then I can swallow it.
One thing that I love when it comes to fantasy and sci fi universes is a well-realised and believable world where it feels like there’s already been centuries of events that have taken place before the story has ever begun. World building is an important facet of storytelling as it can easily destroy the story, the plot and every character in it all if somebody either forgets how an economy works or what it would be like to travel over a hundred miles on feet.
Respectfully, the kind of people who write shows right now have never walked even 5 miles and couldn't explain how an actual economy works because the closest thing they ever studied was a "Why Capitalism is Evil" class at their university.
I disagree. World building is important but it's secondary to a good plot. Granted, if there's poor world building, everything else must be that much better to compensate for it if you want people to like your work of fiction. But it's not THE biggest factor and a LOT can be overlooked if everything else shines. I like to use the original three Star Wars movies as an example. If you critically examine the feasibility of something like the Death Star, or whether a bunch of stone age walking teddy bears would really prove that much of a hindrance to a galaxy-spanning Empire, you can rule it all as absurd very quickly. But most people overlook those things because they're invested in the story's characters and want to see them succeed in spite of the odds stacked against them. The Witcher fails on BOTH accounts though. There was not a single character shown that I cared about and the lore behind events was a muddled mess. Things appeared to happen with no rhyme or reason behind them, nobody's motivations were clear or understandable, and overall everything had this "generic fantasy" vibe to it with little to distinguish it from the countless thousands of other stories just like it.
I think I speak for all of us when I say the real audience looking at this want a series/movie that closely follows the source material and has internally consistent, fact checked story. We want psychologically fleshed-out characters, realistic physics, consistent non-physics (magic) mechanics, and a captivating scene rhythm. Everything else is a bonus: good graphics and effects, pretty people, battle choreography, music, costumes, and even above average acting, Id say. Sometimes you can get away with mediocre acting and not ruin the immersion. We don't care about the color of anyone's skin, as long as it's the skin the source material describes. And if it doesn't, and it's a good fit for it, you can make them green for all we care. This is literally the formula. Its that simple. And in a world where the movie industry is so powerful and wealthy this is trivial to make. I know people that can make computer algorithms that can write book adaptations with such parameters and spit them out daily. But Hollywood can't be bothered.

Your solution to the use of diverse characters by putting different races in different tribes/nations/etc is something I've been whining about for a few years.
"It's what happens when people with an axe to grind instead of a story to tell are put in charge of a massively popular ip built by far greater minds than their own." Very eloquently put Drinker! You hit the nail on the head.
@@snowcloudshinobi how does it throw it in your face? multiculturism exists everyday. in fantasy videogames you have dwarves, Drow, tieflings in a party and there is no seething crying SJW. weebs man
"Those with an axe to grind rather than a story to tell". Yep, that pretty much sums up the current state of things perfectly Drinker. Well said as always. Angry, entitled, spiteful, immature children in adult bodies. I've had the misfortune of working with such people and it's an utterly exhausting and soul destroying experience. You're looking at an adult but it's like your talking to a moody teenager who's screaming "it's not fair" at you for grounding them on the night of the big party.
Yep. They're doing it everywhere, sadly; sports, cinema, entertainment, academia, journalism, science, medicine, and on and on and on... They're more focused on signaling how virtuous they are than they are on providing their customers a quality product/service. Checking boxes and appeasing the woke but vocal minority is clearly their priority.
Your point on ethnicities and sense of geography is spot on. Take Game of Thrones for example. From the North? You have a rugged look with a thick northern British accent. The Reach? You look very clean and well kept and have a typical “Sophisticated” British accent. Dorne? Spanish. Braavos? SE Europe. Free Cities? Middle Eastern. You should be able to simply look at the characters in a scene and tell exactly where they are in the story.
Exactly. GOT is a good example. Because architecture, costumes, language / accent matter. Collectively they make up a big part of the culture of the place / country or people! In a medieval setting particularly, since in medieval times people could from one look tell if someone is from Baghdad, Beijing or Paris! Even in antiquities, a Gallic warrior doesn’t look and is not expected to look like a Roman legionary! Each had his own outfit, weapons, armor, etc., Because each evolved in different environment and adopted the arms that best serve their respective fighting styles and environment, etc. These woke modern shows ignore all these universal historical human facts which makes them tough to watch and follow.
I feel like, you guys are too triggered by race and ethnicities . These are fictional worlds with magic monsters etc , you have no problem believing that instantly , but immediately diversity shows up, suddenly its unbelievable . I believe its time you stopped hiding and shared your real thoughts .
We couldn't finish watching this mess. Two episodes in, we were looking for the silhouettes of robot heads at the bottom of the screen! Loved the series with Henry in it and the animated ones as well.

@@lawlietriver8869 I think it's mostly his presence. Cavil has a physical charisma to where you're drawn towards a scene that he's in because he makes it look more epic than it actually is.
You don't have to show it to a pub full o Witcher fans in Poland, I assure you that's what we all were doing during Christmas and it was wild. In the first episode, I had to keep reminding myself that those burly bearded guys with Scottish accents are elves, not dwarfs. I also love how a bearded, Viking-looking guy (at first I thought that he is the human in that scene) at the end sees a human woman for the first time and has no idea what she is, even though the only difference between them is the shape of their ears, which wouldn't be able to see from that distance. You know, why spend time and money on design and showing the audience that they're different races when you can just shout at them instead? And I also like the point about the 1000-year war. When I was in college, I had to write a short sci-fi story for the final exam in my creative writing class, and I put there a throw-away line about two races being at war for a thousand years and the professor a bit sarcastically pointed out to me that that's a bit long time to be at war. Boy oh boy, if she only knew that people are paid good money by Netflix for writing shit like that. The dialogues were great too - I like how in one episode the guy with cleavers says that terribly cheesy line about thinking that he was done with killing, but the killing wasn't done with him, and the writers must have really loved it and thought it was the greatest line since Clint Eastwood's "Go ahead, make my day", because the narrator uses the same phrase about the dwarf girl and the elves ten minutes later. Speaking of, I love how they allude to slavery in the real world by adding the line about elves being responsible for their ancestors' crimes against the dwarves. White guilt much? Also, I wonder how many reshoots there were since that bug monster from episode 3 looked pretty good, but the main beast seemed like something taken out of Dinotopia. Or maybe they just wanted to honor the infamous golden dragon from the Polish version of the Witcher from 2001.
Nope. They were probably inspired by Dinotopia. Unfortunately. I did the same thing in a Star Wars Forum back in when Force Awakens came out. I asked why are there still stormtroopers 30 years later, the same factions? Wars end. Nations fade. Even the Hundred Years War wasn't fought for a constant century. They didn't have a clue what I was talking about.
I haven't got patience to watch 2nd episode, stopped at the end of 1st. And it looks like I was right: generic quest story that could easily be shot as western, kung fu movie or Bollywood musical, just by a weird, unlucky chance using the Witcher's world as a background. Not worth my time to watch anyway.
Honestly the "thousand years war" is not so far-fetched. Reconquista is counted as a singular war, that lasted 781. Not that far from 1000. That said, it's more like series of conflicts. As which, 1000 years war is quite possible. Also, a war doesn't have to actively consist of military actions and constant killing and destroying. For example North and South Korea are at war since 1945. The war is at total standstill (as far as I know), and you'll only experience it by high military security at the border. Being anywhere else in South Korea you'd think the country is at peace. While there are peace talks going on, it would be possible to create plausible conflict that would go on for thousand(s) of years with little to no battle. Especially in fantasy/sci-fi setting where creatures might live very long, or distances might be absurd, or other factors are at play. With all that said I'm not protecting the Blood Origin series. The war presented there is just plain stupid. Someone just wrote 1000 because it "sounded cool", without considering practical implications as above.
Henry Cavill is the ONLY reason that kept me watching the Witcher Season 1 and 2 i could tell he is that star player that makes the team better because he loves his role
I know nothing about the source material, games or books, but just the fact that as an actual passionate fan of it Henry Cavill was willing to walk away from the lead role because they were butchering the lore has given me so much respect for the guy.
I'm not sure how that's a valid point of view though. What if Henry started to support some shitty stuff, would you support it as well? Nothing a priori wrong about having role models, but not shaping your own worldview and your own opinions is almost a crime against reason.

The Witcher (in books) was all about living together with different species, races, all colours and shapes. It was about tolerance (or lack of it) between humans, elves, dwarfs, magical beings etc. The stories had it all - and readers known it, makes the books so popular not only in Poland, but even internationally. It's funny that the showrunners who seem to be pro-diversity and anti-racism, can't even fathom that the original source material was that as well and in their attempts to create a diverse cast end up failing to tell the story correctly. I often wonder if the poor writing, bad set design, and half-arsedness of the production is a symptom of the writers' hatred of the source material or the cause of it. That being said, writers' hatred of the source material is so widespread that it has basically killed fantasy.

Nice try. Way to think for yourself, Mr. N.P.C.
Language is the currency of politics.
Glad someone understands
The trailer made me go from "Hell yeah, more Witcher" to "Oh no, more Witcher" in about 5 seconds, nuff said
''This absolute cancer of a show!'' Love the honesty in these reviews!
To prawda!
I’m so sorry that this has happened to the Witcher, just remember that there are actually Witcher fans who have read the books and played the games in other parts in the world
Poland here ;p
Well, the most funny thing here is a fact that original Sapkowski stories were talking about racism and prejudice from totally different perspective than typical contemporary piece of art, so a reader/watcher could think: oh, this prejudice is so artificial, they look/think basically the same.
But noooo... lets tell once again a story about Driving Miss Daisy.
Also, yeah, it is possible to tell a diverse racial story even in historical medieval settings. Just look at the Cordoba or Constantinople where you could find people from any known corner of the world. I've long lost my hopes for the future of tv and cinema. The product can only be as good as the passion that is involved in creating it. If you take a huge shit on lore you're only insulting the people you want to attract.
Which city?
@@grantflippin7808 Which city, what?
I absolutely love how more and more people are actually waking up and coming together united in the hate for shows like this! Makes me tear up.
In terms of the “diversity” you mentioned
in every geographical area, they did the same thing with The Wheel of Time.

@@Kamo442
I mean they are right in the idea that humans came to the world of elves and dwarfs.
This is far more entertaining than the actual show. 😅Thank you. 😁

I loved the part where the dwarf marched into the city with the others disguised in the armor of a soldier they killed. No one on their side seemed to think that might be a bad idea and no one in the city seemed to notice the three-foot elf in the formation.
At that point everything was so bad I just said to myself, "why not"?
The problem is not about the city but about the other guards, since they mostly know their collegues (i think) they should know that in the army there is no dwarf or something, but most of the times other guards are usually killed almost right away so they don't even have time to point it out
You can always find explanations, for an example that she was overlooked easily in the crowd and once in the city it’s too late, probably most people at the time not being smart by the way to make the connection and yell out 😂
Also, I was like, how did there just happen to be a uniform that conveniently fit the dwarf?Where did it come from? There weren’t any dwarfs in the original army. 🤷🏾♀️

@@matthewmosier8439 It's scary how spot on your comment is.
That's why diversity don't work in terms of fantasy. Because diversity makes every city, every nation, every race, every world looks like California.

Every year that goes by I'm just in mor eand more awe about how great Henry Cavil is when you see the absolute scale nad magnitude of his ability to absolutely rivet you while being surrounded by just awful cancerous nothingness. Just him being on the screen in a witcher scene is almost enough to make the show good. YOu can't take your eyes off him in anything he's in. It's kinda surreal cuz it creeps up on you. They didn't understand he was the only reason people were watching in the first place a show that was so awful.
Dude is a very average actor.
@@seanthomas1552 Not gonna lie and say I think he is on the same plane as Bale or Phoenix. But he has this lovable charm and genuine quality about him, that for me goes a long way. A very long way. It shines through in his work, and therefor it becomes great. At least those are my 2 cents on the matter. I think his two most prominent roles were mishandled, but not by him. I should love his Superman and Witcher the most, but I find myself liking him better as the villain goon in Mission Impossible. Because Tom Cruise might be a bit nutty, but the dude just knows how to make movies and manage the talent that is hired.
@@seanthomas1552 So was John Wayne, until he was older.
@@lawlietriver8869 I think it's mostly his presence. Cavil has a physical charisma to where you're drawn towards a scene that he's in because he makes it look more epic than it actually is.
I thought yenefer was pretty compelling.
Praise the emperor that Henry is now executive producer of a 40k series. If Amazon wants to interfere with quotas.
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

"ALL ACCORDING TO PLAN"
Am going to assume GW have nailed down any language in the licence deal that prevents creative bull.
Given the current trajectory of mass media entertainment... I hope for the best but fully expect the worst.
The thing is that GW is also EXTREMELY protective sometimes of their IP. If Henry can pull this off, they'll get so many teef from us for merch.
"People with an axe to grind instead of a story to tell", what a great line
The fact the creator said that Cavill is basically the show him leaving means its done
yep, they'll loose most viewers before, after and during season 4.
What do you mean that the Witcher is the core aspect of the show ‘the Witcher’?
@@theylivewesleep.5139 What do you mean what do you mean
I'd be surprised if this lot of writers actually wanted to honour any original or faithful versions/lore at this point tbh
If you continue to watch this crap, you are part of the problem.
I would recommend using your rolemodes more like a tourist guides- see where they lead you, but you have to see the scene with your own eyes and try to understand it with your own mind...
@@malyvo0 I think celebrity worship is stupid as well but did you read what OP wrote wrong or something? Dude said nothing about role models in any way. All he said was that he respects him for his actions which I do too. Playing Geralt was Cavill's literal dream role, he knows the books so well that he even ended up helping production with questions about the lore, so just the fact he left it all behind because of how bad it was getting says a lot about the guy. Thats it, nothing more, nothing less.
@@malyvo0 Nobody said anything about his personal beliefs outside the context of the show, quit reaching for straws.
@@malyvo0 Did you seriously just made up an argument/problem out of thin air by bringing the conversation to something that wasn't even remotely related to what the OP said. Holy shit. Reading comprehension. *READ* before answering, you absolute doofus.
@@malyvo0 Yep you definitely misread the "actual passionate fan of it" part which was referring to Henry Cavill being an actual passionate fan of the Witcher, NOT OP being a fan of Henry Cavill lol
