Dig a small sawdust pit under the end of the log being cut, which might help avoid saw teeth hitting dirt once the log is cut clear through.

Brilliant - my grandfather was a Stoker - I don't actually know what that was but I'm guessing it was tending to a large steam engine of some sort. Great video! 👍

Hi you got a nice engine there works very well, I just bought one like it quite complete some small parts missing like the clutch handle and the saw guide in front do you think you can help with some dimensions??

Hahahahahahaha I was thinking the same thing! That thing must have been a big hit at the logging operations of its time lol. All of that set up time to make a slow ass cut that a skilled sawyer with a sharp logging saw would make in a fraction of the time.

Is this just for bucking up logs, or what was it intended to do? Surely it wasn't made to just produce thin discs of wood.

Umm, yeah. It was made to buck logs. But at the tri county fair he just cut thin discs to demonstrate the machine.

Don't take this as gospel but I think the dragsaw engines, which had extra oilers, ran dry sump, while other Bradfords, otherwise identical had no oilers and ran with oil in the sump (these had splashers on the crankshaft too). The logic is that the Drag saws ran at varying angles which would hav made a sump of oil problematic!

This must have been made before the chain saw was invented.

Yea try saying that in 1920 when this was made and kids were used 4 and 5 at a time to hand saw timber. This was a back saving marvel with some extra risks I may add

The guys who take old saws to Shows almost never run them properly sharpened, they'd go through wood piles too fast with it sharp and tuned. (Look at the weak dust with little noodles it's pulling.) So people are left thinking it wasn't impressive technology and don't see the value of the thing grandpa had been saving.
Or when sharp it burns through wood, and fewer people at the event get to see it running.
