I’ve not heard you mention If you run a winter front across your radiator? Here in Chicago anything below 20 degrees Fahrenheit I use cardboard. When it’s -20 here even with the cardboard it still not really enough .
HA! I grew up in Tanana. At one point we had over 100 sled dogs. Our family was very much into dog racing. I learned my work ethic by feeding all our dogs every day. Building. a fire, boiling a big 55-gallon gas drum full of salmon and white fish from the Yukon River, and mixing that with Purina dog chow. It smelled so good, many times I dipped my finger into the food and eat. lol. When you drive back through Denali, try to capture a shot of Denali Grizzly Bear Resort. This is our 57th year we have operated our family business. Thanks Timmy.

@@MikaelBrogren the Road to Tanana is a priority level 5 road which means it's not plowed until February need a 4X4 to drive through. Also the road stops at river. Needs to freeze for you to cross

I've never seen snow in person. I've never touched snow in my whole life. Florida born and raised I live in Georgia now. I only wish I could do what you're doing but I'm older and I've got a lot of health issues so watching you do these things makes my heart happy thank you Tim.

I live 3 hours from Atlanta in Western North Carolina, and it snows with accumulation at least once a year. Next time it snows here, you might as well come touch some snow. And if you go up towards Boone there are places to ski where they make snow for a large portion of the winter.

Snow is awesome and terrible at the same time. In Indiana, the only bad thing about snow is that DOT smothers the roads in salt.

When I was growing up, my mother sometimes made us corned beef hash with eggs for dinner. She would open the top and the bottom of the can and create slices of the hash and fry it with fried eggs between the slices. 1960s style. We liked it!

Tim, just bump up the idle to where the oil pressure gauge jumps up from the idle mark. Thats all you need then. Also, there is an upgrade oil pump for that engine made by Melling that is MUCH better for that engine. It is located on the front crankshaft snout so not a big swap but for sure worth it. I would usually agree with you but it’s too bad Ford discontinued the 7.3 L because the government EPA said there needs to be more water coming out the exhaust. Which led to the 6.0L debacle, then the 6.4 disaster.

When you were talking about how cold it was inside the cab with the heater blowing full blast, reminded me of when I was a truck driver & my co-driver taught me a trick to keep the heater blowing warm air in those extremely frigid temps. He went through a dumpster & got a cardboard box, cut it so that it was flat, then put it between the radiator and grill (we had an International cab over). Then presto! The heater was blowing hot air again. He explained that the radiator could not keep up with heating the intense cold air blowing through it, so putting the cardboard in front of the radiator reduced the flow so the radiator could heat the air and send it into the cab. It worked!
You may not have accomplished your goals on this trip, but you still had a good time, saw some beautiful scenery, met some amazing and very nice people, and made the trip safely, can't ask for much more than that! Oh! And no major breakdowns either!! Thank you for another AWESOME video and BEAUTIFUL views of Alaska!!! May God continue to Bless and Protect you in all your adventures (even though your rafting keeps me holding my breath! LOL!), projects, and all that you do.

I was taken back in time to a time I miss so much, when I was a cross-country truck driver and still learning tips for the road. Timmy's experiences has a tendency to bring back a lot of great memories to this old lady.
Wow that is incomprehensibly cold for me! I live in Australia. I really have no idea what that would be like 😂 I love these videos and would love to see it for myself one day.
Your car would overheat in about 10minutes if you blocked up the radiator core where I live. It only drops to about 20 degrees c in winter which is about 70 degrees f I believe.
Timmy may have a grill bra, but what ionescuff is taking about is to put that cardboard directly onto the rad. In those temps blocking the grill is not enough as air leaks in and chills the rad. Not only will this get heat into the cab but it will raise the engine block temp and make it more evenly warmed. This will also improve combustion and make for better fuel mileage and less wear and wash down of non combusted fuel getting past the rings and contaminating the oil. I change the oil right away on that trip as for all that idling is sure to get the oil dirty.
You can't beat mother nature, you just have to go with her. Respect for your perseverance and resilience

And making the right call when the circumstances, like a blizzard, make the plan to bike to the beach too dangerous. I think pilots and maybe climbers, call it "get there-itis.: It too often doesnt turn out well.
I'm in Canada. -40 is par for the course. I have a farm with a 1/4 mile drive. I use a Ford Diesel compact tractor to plow us out. Most winters, it gets around -50 with wind gusts. Needless to say, I don't leave my ol ford diesel running all winter. A simple block heater. If I get stuck in the field, need to shut down. I will run a generator on the block heater. Also, we have a rule here on the farm. No silverware inside non-stick pans. The non stick material chips with metal utensils. They are CFC's known as "Forever Chemicals" eg: Genx. They also bio-accumilate inside a body. We only use plastic ware to contact these pans.
Timmy :05 your propane tip fell straight into your kindling after the tank lit on fire you can see it if you played the video back you'd have seen it. That's why it started on fire, it wasn't sealed properly and the tip just dropped right off the tank. Take a look!

My dad worked for Ford, he just retired last year. But for a while he was a steering engineer on the F-150 program. One time him and a team had to go up to Yellowknife because of some problems miners were having. They all drove 150’s up there but a lot of them lived further south in Canada or here in the lower 48. When it gets down to negative 40 the steering fluid would freeze up causing the steering line to burst. The quick fix was to disconnect the impeller and problem solved for the winter. I know I’m forgetting some of the exact details I’ll have to ask him before i forget. Anyways the real problem came when some of guys would forget about it come summer and drive their trucks back home. Without the impeller moving the steering fluid around the system would overheat “down south”. My dad went up there in the winter to check out the issue and how the fix worked in real life conditions. It was one of those situations where he had to sign a release incase the ice road broke or something and he fell through and died we couldn’t sue Ford on his behalf. Well I remember him returning and getting to work in the kitchen with wax, straws and what not. After heating up a mold in the oven he had a prototype of a gravity feed system that would work in 40 below or 100 above. Ford accepted it and the original steel prototype that the engineering center made from his wax model sits on his desk to this day. Never made any money from it just like the guy at McDonald’s who invented the McNugget. Though he did have a happy end after Allen Mullay took over leadership at Ford engineers were all of a sudden treated with the respect they deserved. Allen Mullay was a top leader at Boeing during the merger with McDonald-Douglass and lost his job due to his questioning of cost & safety cutting measures to raise the stock price. That whole deal where Boeing moved to Chicago to be as far away from engineers in Seattle “to make better financial decisions”. The 737 Max would have vindicated Mullay but he decided he wanted to work at another storied US industrial firm to demonstrate that it could be successful taking quality into account. This was like 2005 when Ford was a mess and got to thank the guy for his foresight he leveraged every asset including the Blue Oval insignia itself to build up cash reserves. Thank god he did it got Ford through the recession without having to take a bailout which would likely have meant layoffs. The new corporate culture was good to my old man. He had a hard time there after after college working in finance & ended up leaving for a smaller company up in northern Michigan. If my mom didn’t get pregnant he planned to take a job as a forest ranger but he went back to school & got his engineering degree. Ford looked out for him during the chaos of the recession he was promoted to internal safety investigations. Which he lead a team of fellow engineers who looked at problems that causes safety issues and made decisions on how to deal with the problems. Whether it was a customization gone bad for example or if there was a defect that needed a recall. During that time when for a while it looked like the GM & Chrysler going bankrupt would take all the other automakers under by taking then supply chain down my dad would have a job for 10+ years. People would still be driving Fords even if it had went bankrupt the next day for a long time and by law people would need to be on hand to address safety issues. I showed my dad your set up he got a good laugh he thinks it’s cool & is proud it’s an F series.

Timmy, you have some sensors that are bad on your truck.
My first thoughts are the ICP & EBP and maybe your IPR simple easy to check ICP, google is your friend your vibration and poor fuel mileage and exhaust are good indicators of that. Hopefully you still have your EBP so your truck can get a good baseline from PCM to ECM. And you never mention having them but you should carry Cam Position Sensor and Crank Position Sensor both are easy to change and if you don't have one you and they go out you are 100% dead in the roadway, parking, or rutted two track. I am a mechanic in FBX, I was running my equipment @ the airport during same temps 3 weeks ago and I run the Navistar version of your engine 7.3L T444E, so do some troubleshooting, I know your capable and don't buy China Aftermarket. Buy OEM or Alliant Power or from Pro-Diesel or Source One Parts. Good Video, I always appreciate your tenacity!

Hey Tim I know what you mean about feeling at home most when you’re behind the wheel. I’ve also done road trips for a few weeks but not only in a vehicle but also on a motorcycle. Camping in a tent. Tim . Pro driving tip . When in a white out turn your over head drive lights out to reduce glare and if need be high beam also . You won`t see as far but you`ll have much much better definition of the road . If need be reduce speed to compensate . Trucking in the North 101. 10-4 good buddy !!! lol
Yep, from montana here. I’ve got a 4 runner with too many led lights. The second I get into a gnarly storm all of them go off and it’s only regular headlights and fogs
Timmy shows you sometimes just how ignorant he is on some subjects. What you said is a perfect example. I’m his mind he just more light, more cool, more see further arrrrgghhh. I previously mentioned in another video that should change some of them to Amber at the very least. Or another example. Dude has mentioned wet stacking a few times and talked about it briefly and showed he knew nothing about it or what it was. But for some reason he just decided to high idle the truck all night even though wet stacking is not an issue for the 7.3 diesels. Overall he just seems to make silly decisions and I question his judgment. Dude tried to drive all that way during the worst weather window of the year and had to turn around just the same as he a few months ago when he tried it the first time. I guess he just thinks it’s cool to drive all that way so he can brag about how much fuel he burns through and tell how his truck has two fuel tanks a million times.

You have had one adventurous trip that was awesome taking us along with you can't wait for the next one tip I will say oh and also good you carry the 44 definitely that even made me feel comfortable watching the video LOL any case if you have not put any Lucas in there injector cleaner that thick stuff it looks kind of yellowish in the bottle it will improve your fuel mileage definitely I was an owner operator for 10 years and every two weeks is about how long that stuff would last and soon as it was out you would know it because your fuel mileage will drop so get a bottle that's required for your amount of gallons in your tank and you should see some massive Improvement in your fuel mileage but that's incredible how much fuel that really Burns glad you shared that with us... keep up the hard work Timmy and be blessed!!!

Yeah, Looking back the replay of the propane tank catching fire, it looks like the torch dropped into the tree branches you were using for the fire, too bad, that could come in handy later on. The being said, glad you didn't get blown up or something like that. Got to love that F350 Diesel, I had a 2017 with the 6.7 and I absolutely loved that truck.

The bit where you say you feel at home in the driver's seat moving (down the road). I felt the same when I was on my skis dropping off the summit at 17K feet, then driving through beautiful country. Then the kids come along and it becomes a trip rather than moments "at home" in the wilderness. Then they go into high school sports and tough class loads, then off to college. Then you travel for college athletic events around the country. And now, I am signing retirement paperwork, kids are off on the their own in respective careers and I am figuring my next move in terms of getting off the couch and getting out to home in the wild. Enjoy life. You blink and It changes.

Trucks then are different than trucks now . I have a 99 7.3 an love the thing it’s so different then newer vehicles . Everything’s simple to fix , cheap to insure register . Big longevity with these trucks . Newer vehicles are like mach box cars

I am just going to call you out here a bit. I am a Norwegian, we do understand how snow and short days work. You had no intention of going up anywhere that day. If you did, you would have started before or at the very break of dawn. And there is no way you expected that electric bike contraption to take you up there in -40 Celsius, Fahrenheit or friggin Kelvin.
I live on a border with Austria, Germany and do occasional back country skiing. We leave at dawn or before the sun comes up in the morning on a sunny day. Middle of Europe with phone reception. I kept watching him and thinking the same, what the hell is he trying to do? That looked like a whole day ski tour.
I know nothing of snow cold country and I was think is he a dummy or trying to kill himself.
Right? 😂 To say he was going to hike and snowboard down the face of either of those would have been a whole day hike. I’ve lived in Utah and snowboarded my whole life, that was definitely not happening.
One hour of daylight left, -40f degree weather, NO ski goggles, bad back and leg, alone - which you should almost never do in the mountains, couldn't even light a fire if he needed it. Yeah that was too funny.

Letting the truck run that long without cutting off makes me excited haha. I’ve only ever heard rumors of people leaving their 12 valves idling for months at a time. That’s awesome!

What a lovely video Timmy. Your way of being humble and actually created nice content while things going bad is wholesome. I know how hard it is to do anything in the freezing conditions since it takes so much more effort than what can look so "easy" when you watch videos.
I was skiing with a sled and a little group of four people for abou 100km sleeping in tent in below -30Celcius for 8 nights straight in the arctic mountains called Sarek national park in Sweden last winter. Never been so cold in my life and I know how dangerous it can be. I hardly got my camera out because it was so hard. But at the same time it was absolutely beautiful.

What you need is a remote start system controlled by a thermostatic switch to start and stop the engine so it won't need to run constantly yet stay warm enough to start in the morning.
I just remembered: these systems are in use on refrigerated semi trailers. The units only run enough to keep the load cold and stop and start automatically. Just change the on/off settings start engine at 30 deg.. and off at 150 deg. for example. Search "reefer start stop systems".
Yup....run the truck 10minutes/hr and temp will stay same as idling continually
