It's going to take a while, but as someone who's hoping to get a Fat Boy for touring (Sturgis trip! Sturgis trip!), I find a point-by-point guide like this to be invaluable. Thank you very much for pointing out some of the short-trip/long-trip limitations of the stock model, and some of the alternatives we might have up for consideration. Please keep putting these online for us. All appreciations.
Thanks for showing my bike, 2023 Fatboy, i love it, you are so right about the seat, i rode 2.5 hours to PA, about 45 minutes into the ride my butt was numb, the wind was not bad at all, i dont have a windscreen but the seat most definitely needs to be upgraded.
Believe this or not.. a soft(er) seat sucks, for distance. Think 🤔 about it.. A seat needs to be firm enough to allow alternating one cheek to the other. Too soft, and every position change, seems to pressure all the same spots. Just saying 🤷♂️
23' for cruise as standard equipment. Yes, as far as I'm concerned, it's a mando req. Had it added to the 16' Breakout before I picked it up, and along with the other mods to make it more rideable (I'm 6.2 in full gear).
I've done 3-400 kms on my stock sportster, no wind protection, absolutely stock . Complete stock suspension and seat. I have over 11000 kms on this entirely stock Sportster. What people don't realize is that Harley bikes are made for the long haul and the seat and suspension DON'T break in until 10 000 kms. Trust me. First year 3-400 km day , I'd feel like I'm dying. Now I'm fine with the same kms in a day.
harleys are built for 200 miles max from the factory. I have two of them. neither one has stock handlebars or seats anymore. harley builds bikes for commuters not long haulers. anyone can suffer 500 miles on a stock harley. only idiots do it consistently.
Please, you can tour on any bike, at the time, I was 62 years old, had a 2014 low rider, left new York, 3 and a half days later Denver Colorado only add on was a windshield, just ride!!!!!!!
That’s strange. I know they made them as I had a rack on my 2013. You could try eBay. I’m sure Amazon would have something but I can’t speak to the quality. I would also try Drag Specialties.
@@canadiansa1nt309 Thanks a ton for the recommendation, I was very surprsied myself as well. Because I'm quite sure I've seet a Fat Boys the 103 Twin Cam with luggage racks
I would say on the pre-2018 models a rear suspension upgrade could be done as they’re not the best. On these newer models the rear suspension is much better and way easier to adjust. Personally, I’ve never had too much of an issue with suspension. For me the biggest issue with comfort was always the seat.
wore a backpack for my first 5k miles in the saddle of my honda 500. traded for a dyna and saddlebags were my second investment after the bars. saddlebags are necessary for real riders.
@@RicardoRamirez-rk1wp Hey, Ricardo! The FB is a lot easier to handle off of the stand since it’s around a 100 lbs lighter. However, the RKP handles easier in the curves and has the RDRS system and hard bags. Because the King is a bigger frame, my wife has a bit more room. So, if you ride longer distances with a passenger, the Road King is a better choice. If you ride solo it’s more which bike turns your head in the garage.

Cruise is definitely nice to have on longer rides. Having said that, I’ve never really used it much.

It’s not the bike… it’s your ass that’s broken in.
Yes! I will post when I ride in town and when I ride out of town.

Any thoughts on the absorbers? Wilbers, Legends. Makes a big difference in riding comfort

A back pack of some sort is an option. I've never used one, but I see people with them. Could be uncomfortable if worn for hours. Don't know.
Can’t say I’ve done that but I can’t imagine that would be too comfortable on a long trip. Cheap option though.

Great review. I’m thinking about trading my ‘23 Road King Special for a ‘23 Fat Boy. How is the tire wear on the new Fat Boy?
You’ll probably need new tires after 13-14000 kms. I’ve had no uneven tire wear so far.
@canadiansa1nt309 , dang I'd be having to purchase 3 rear tire a year.
What is the reason you are thinking of trading in your RK for the Fat Boy? I’m trying to decide which of those 2 to get.
