  • This is a total settings walkthrough for using the 5000ES Inverters in an Off Grid with Utility Backup Mode configuration
With the onset of cost-effective long life lithium batteries and the decline of net-metering compensation many Solar Installs are moving away from selling to the grid and instead configuring the grid as a backup source only.

Great video on how to set up the features on this Growatt 5000es. I have 4 of the mpp solar units because you guys didn't have any of these at the time and still havent gotten mine installed lol no videos at all on how to set those up by the sellers. I'm presently putting in my dad's growatt 5000es combo with the 2 units and the solaredge transformer that he got from you guys. This video will help me out a lot in getting it set up. He's using eve lithium cells though instead of the rack style lithium.

Time based charging from grid sounds appealing to me.
I have 4 c per kWh overnight, and a peak evening rate of about 28 c kWh in the daytime.
I know there are efficiency losses, but with my being underpaneled, I am tempted to try.

I would suggest letting the inverters restart on an overload condition. The majority of the time off gridders will size the supply and usage within an efficient range but there may be a time when enough appliances such as my four refrigerator compressors plus water heater and HVAC and well pump and kids gaming PCs etc all decide at once that now is the time to demand electrons. Proper surge current protections should already be in place such as T Class fuses, properly sized breakers, and non flammable backer boards to mitigate danger. Always way your risk vs reward but I cannot imagine a scenario where multiple inverters should all be shut down because 1 is malfunctioning. Great suggestions otherwise and thanks for all the great info and equipment you have provided over the years!!

This was helpful. I am a missionary in East Africa and have my compound running on a growatt 5000ES inverter, with 4 of the large Growatt lithium iron batteries and 6,000 watts of solar panels. The challenge is the installers were electricians, and not really solar experts so sort of left the inverter in the default settings. I really worry whether for the Lithium batteries they have set the charge and discharge voltage levels correctly. There is just no technical expertise over here to help get my system tuned in. It pretty much works but at times has unexpected behaviours. I will continue watching your videos and hopefully I can get something figured out.

These units do not export, they are off grid units. You pull from the grid, but you cannot send. The way things are going I would not get into send power to the grid. California is looking at charging people as much as $8 dollars for each kw of your array. Electric companies are switching to credits instead of cast.

Nope. As the text on your screen says "AC Bypass" when the load is driven by the AC, the current does not go though the inverter. The only reason your inverter will do anything in this situation is if you are charging from the grid parallel to letting the AC run your loads. The inverter will be restricted in your charging to the limit set in option 11 in this case.

I have been on the phone a bunch of times with Battery EVO trying to figure out the correct battery settings. My batteries last 3 min then charge from the grid then back to the batteries for another 3 min and so on.(this is at night, my solar handles everything during the day).

I have the same setup with a Growatt 5000ES, but have an issue with the charging ORDER. When the sun is up, solar power charges the batteries first and what's left goes to the house. If the house needs more, then the missing energy is taken from the grid. This is stupid. What I want/need is to reverse this charge priority. So that solar power goes to the house FIRST and what's left should charge the batteries. Any ideas on how to do that on the Growatt 5000ES?

I'm a little confused about setting 13. Someone else in a tutorial said to set at 100% but here you said 45%. Is the 45% just so it knows when to start using the battery again? The other tutorial I watched said 100% setting because it sets the upper limit of charge. Does it always charge up to 100% if you set 13 @ 45% for example? It's both charging and drawing from the battery once 45% is reached?

    • @TheFatman819

Yes it will always charge to 100%, setting it at 45% means it will not be drawing from the grid when it reaches that number as solar is now supplying the power.

I may shift the charge point again to try to get battery charge during the day about that 95% mark just from solar. So far my over nightdischarge on 6 EG4 LL batteries was about 25%. In the first part of the day, the discharge seemed to continue despite generating more power than I am using... but I only have the solar one one inverter at the moment, and I am running 2 5000ES in parallel. Hello. Is anything that can be done to reduce self inverter power consumption from batteries? Even if connected to GRID and no AC grid charge it still consumes around 60W from Li battery. During long nights, it can consum more than 700W from batteries. I would expect usage for self consumption from the grid and not from the batteries.

    • @JamesLee-ey2yv
      @JamesLee-ey2yv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I also would like to hear an answer on this. I would also add that once the batteries are fully charged and PV power is still available the house load will pull partially from PV but even if additional PV is available the inverters will also pull from the batteries. Usually prior to when the sun goes down my batteries which should still be around 100% are depleted to usually 85% and even as low as 75% at dusk when I should be starting the night with 100% charge on the batteries. My inverters are set exactly as James did in the video except #12 is set to 29% and #13 is set to 40% and #21 is set at 20%. BTW, the Inverters alarm #4 ( battery voltage too low) at 26% charge. Is it ok to go to 80% DOD if the batteries alarm at 26% and continue to discharge even with AC bypassing to the load.

    • @maryanneblanke9290

I am definitely intersted in the answer. We are having the same issue with the inverters pulling from the batteries when PV is 100% available. Which results in less than 100% charge on the batteries and we are back to the grid by morning. We have 6 LifePower4 batters.. Could you please answer to this, if this unit could do it or if there is a better unit to this job:
"We dont want utility to charge the battery..."
I have a dilemma and looking for this setup below, if it is even possible to do...
So I want to build POC (if works I want to advertise it among people who can and want to spit out to be cheap in long run and possibly take part of green thinning) at my father or my friend first where we have Utility as backup and as backup in sense of charging as well. Night time electricity is cheap and depending on weather / autumn to spring it will be not possible to live off from PV and battery alone.
So here goes. From 0600 to 0000 I want to use SBU battery down to 10% (on bad days). Thats is simple to understand.
But on the night time from 0000 to 0600 I want to use battery down to 50%. And if the battery was below 50% I want Utility to charge it to 50% and use Utility up to 0600.
I guess it is like SBU with max 50% SOC with Utility charge enabled?
What this setup enables to do is to use solar and battery power on good days over 24h. And if there is not enough solar, you can precharge battery to the state where most probably you can last a day up to next charging cycle at the next night.
Yes I am in EU where the energy pricing is insane... But, I am willing to spit out some money for a fun project, which gives back in longer run.

Dear Sir, I have an off-grid system powered by growatt 5000es invertor. It has one lithium battery from Rosen solar which is 48v 100amph. Can you tell me why the invertor stops charging the battery even thou it is not 100% full. The charger always starts at 07.00 and stops charging at 08.45 . Before in winter it did not have a lot of load in the morning and had only the battery to charge. But now in summer I have two ceiling fans working from 07.00 to 19.00. Thanking you in advance Ray.

The other option with the Honda generator we have is a 12V DC 8A output, So couldnt I buy a 12V to 48V setup up converter and charge the 48V battery directly???

@@railroadbill3556 If you are talking about the same 5000W Growatts as above, then you will need a generator that puts out 240VAC. These inverters are NOT split-phase, so there's no neutral. We get around that by getting a "Mid-Point Transformer that has 4 wires: Hot L1 (black), Hot L2 (red), Neutral (white), and earth Ground (green or bare). I just built my off-grid system, and used a double 50A breaker for my main switches. I wired the Mid-point Transformer into the main ground and neutral feeds in the box, then hooked up, [ from both inverters], both black, (L1), wires into the first 50A breaker, then both red, (L2), into the second 50A breaker. Then I used a second double 50A breaker set to run my RV's origional breaker box, while leaving the other free for future use. If you have the proper kind of breaker boxes, L1 and L2 should be on every other switch.

Just shut off the unit, then go into the setting and change the Voltage settings BEFORE it powers down completely. It is IN standby mode once you shut off the switch at the bottom of the unit, until the screen goes dark, which takes a while, so you should have time to make the adjustment. (This threw me at first also, but I downloaded the User Manual, and could reference it, as well as watching several videos on TH-cam on this subject.

Now I have to choose USE ( user defined setting) to charge with 3500-4000W ( 60A) to fully charge with that 6 hour/day grid supply
Can you please help me increase charging current if I set it to Li ( Lithium) ? I found no way to control charging speed when set to lithium mode
Btw ,I don't have solar panels too .. only relying on 6 hr/day grid supply to recharge and use the battery throughout the day when the grid went offline
The grid always come online for 3 hr after 9 hour offline .. so I have to refill the battery within 3 hour .. so only 3500W (60A) charge speed is best for me

Firstly, please set Setting 12 to 25% and Setting 21 to 20%. Since your Setting 21 is currently at 10%, it's likely that your device isn't set up to BMS communicate. Adjusting these settings should help prevent low voltage points that can lead to the 04 error.

@@waydeross I am going by what BattleBorn suggests. They call for 57.6VDC as 100% while Charging. I finally made it to that on June 3rd of 2022. BattleBorn sets the zero and 100 per cent in such a way so that the batteries never actually reach either, or so I've been led to believe. The settings i made on my Growatt 5000ES were the recommended ones by both Growatt, and BattleBorn. I called the latter to verify that this would give my batteries the longest life span possible. Also, in that direction, I will rarely be using over 50% discharge most days. I oversized my system for what I need to power to allow the system the most easy on it I can. Oh, and no, BattleBorn batteries don't have BMS cables to hook to a pc or the Growatt.
