it's really interesitng how every instance of inter-mutant conflict we've seen on the east coast(Fawkes and Strong) didnt involve killing but instead involved imprisonment, with the mutants keeping the traitor in a holding cell instead of just killing them. It really adds to the theory of intense loyalty to the species and understanding that they cant create more and refusal to ever kill one another.

The Fallout 4 mutants are capable of easily killing each other if they act out of line by agreeing with humans or showing higher intelligence than the standard mutant.
The Super Mutants led by Fist were planning on killing Strong and were making bets on how many times his body would bounce off the ground once they pushed him off Trinity Tower just because he took the readings of MacBeth too literally after agreeing with Rex.
Erickson from Far Harbor used to be in a group led by Grun, a Behemoth leading the Vim! Pop Factory. He had to go into hiding because Grun almost squashed him to death after trying to give some intelligent suggestions to them.

One of Fawkes combat lines when fighting SMs is "You'll pay dearly for all you did to me!" so they were torturing him in other ways too. They weren't keeping him alive out of respect for their own.

There is no infighting because Super Mutants share everything, they like it when they help each other for no ulterior motives, and are a lot more unified than the Raiders. The gunners having heavy fire power and a disposition for the high ground, making them a good counter to super mutants. I've recently become a bit curious about Natick Bank's importance to the supermutants and deathclaws alike. I recently visited there and counted no fewer than 7 deathclaws in the area surrounding the town. directly east of there, right on the border of the map, there is a behemoth that spawns at a electrical transformer station that will start duking it out with nearby deathclaws. I've never found a deathclaw nest in the area to suggest it's a nesting ground like the Lynn Woods area, but despite it's low mutey population, the nearby behemoth might suggest that taking this area is a higher priority, than we might initially assume.

As far as the fate of the Commonwealth mutants.
I think that as time goes on and their numbers dwindle I can see two things possibly happening.
1: The mutants consolidate their power and instead of many warlords and raiding parties they instead fall under one banner.
They would likely hold up in a secure location. Which I think the Glowing Sea would be the perfect location.
Yes it's FAR away from their normal raiding paths, but the natural protection that the highly irradiated and dangerous area means that any human faction looking to wipe them out will have a tough time doing so.
2: With their numbers dwindling the mutants could simply migrate to a new area, either in search of more mutant groups to join or find a way to make more mutants themselves. Or to simply find a easier target to raid.
We already see this happening with the Far Harbor mutants who migrated there from Boston.

Personally, I'd like to think they built a bunch of wood and scrap boats, similar to the ones used by the Orks in Lord of the Rings (Return of The King or The Two Towers, cant remember which), and then sailed to Spectacle Island to setup shop.

Also, it makes sense that Super mutants would have other goals than the ones in FO3 since they don't actually have acces to the FEV. They don't really strike me as raiders necessarily, more like Barbarians or Vikings, they care alot about strength, they look down on humans and want to kill and bask in the gore and violence, they have suicidebombers, they don't care about dying, that's the reason they don't stay in the glowing sea, they want to be close to people they can kill and don't care about the risks.
Lastly i just wanna pitch an idea for a future fallout game, i would love it some day if we got a semi-intelligent behemoth boss of supermutants that has this giant throne and a couple of pet deathclaws, as well as cages of baby deathclaws, i think it could be a promising concept.

The mutant erected a small camp/dwelling within a train car just south of Gunner Plaza following the tracks just before hitting the boundary to the map. It's an unmarked location. After you mentioned the loyalty and fanaticism of suicide mutants, it made me think of how bizarre and out of character this lone suicider, being this far south, was acting.

That's kind of obviously what's happening. The institute is kidnapping people and turning them into super mutants, they're not going to waste potential test subjects just because they plan on replacing that person with a Synth.

    • @mikoto7693

That’s what I’ve thought for awhile. That at least for the last few decades since the creation of the first Gen3, the people abducted to be replaced have been turned into Super Mutants and released. At least until Virgil destroyed the FEV lab.
Before then, about 50-60 years ago, I know that the Institute was trying to use FEV for the “perfect machines/synths” project so they discarded the rejects from that.
But my theory is that after the creation of the Gen3 Synth the FEV abductions continued partially to deal with the replacement captives, but partially to keep the Commonwealth weak and divided.

About the mutants in the Vim! Pop factory: the terminal entries in the factory seem to suggest that Grun, the behemoth, led the group because of his strength. He was apparently losing cognitive abilities, becoming more and more aggressive and less and less intelligent as he grew in size and strength.
This is consistent with what we know about behemoths. Super mutants who live long enough don't die from old age. They just keep growing bigger and dumber, seemingly infinitely or until they can no longer find enough food to support their massive bodies.
If you look at a behemoth up close, you can see that it is deformed, seemingly by its muscle mass growing too fast for the bone structure to keep up. That seems like another likely cause of death for behemoths who don't get killed by an army of heavily armed assailants.
I don't know if there is any certain information telling if _all_ super mutants are potential behemoths, or if only some of them will grow to that extreme.

With CIT being the main point of insertion for operatives, it's possible that the Institute has chosen Boston as their designated place to discard super mutants instead of Cambridge. This would at least keep the Charles River between them, all with little extra energy used on teleportation. This could also help explain why super mutants are far more concentrated in Boston than Cambridge, where they technically originate.

I think some vault 87 super mutants made it to the Commonwealth and integrated themselves with the Institute mutants. The main reason why I think this is because Strong will occasionally say "No green stuff here". If the Commonwealth mutants only gain new members from the institute, then why would they look for FEV? As far as they should know, the only way to get new mutants is to wait for the institute to create new ones. Then again,I don't know what the process is for them to be turned and released,so maybe they know what FEV is.

This obviously something mutant leaders would want so they probably have all raiding party's report back on any green stuff

Complete conjecture about the placement of the Super Mutants in the commonwealth:
The Institute began disposing of Super Mutants by teleporting them several stories into the air at random places in the commonwealth. Randomness would avoid creating a pattern for the surface dwellers to notice. Due to the randomness of the teleportation, occasionally a Super Mutant would survive the process inside a high rise building. From these elevated positions, they set up raiding bases and began to scavenge the surrounding areas for food, weapons, and rope to make gorebags. The Institute became aware of the surviving Super Mutants, however they didn't stop because the Super Mutants destabilized the largest communities in the commonwealth, and actively reduced the raider population. This could also provide the reason that the Institute never stopped producing Super Mutants, even while Virgil notes that their experiments seem fruitless.

I'm curious about the groups that found themselves in Far Harbor, they could give insight to potential numbers of mutants in areas outside the Commonwealth.
It's possible that the biggest reason for the lack of mutants in the early game can also be attributed to the blocked railway north of Beantown, which restricted mutant flow.
Lastly, it's perfectly plausible that the distribution of the mutants is simply down to being teleported aboveground to CIT to save power and then being driven out by the synths.

Super Mutants don't fight with each other, and share everything. Strong says as much in his companion dialogue. They consider each other "brothers."
I would speculate that the F.E.V. compels them to cooperate with others infected with it, or at least dampens their aggression towards other infected.
If Ghouls are involved with F.E.V. as well, this would explain the comment in FO3 that Muties don't attack ghouls.

Also, Strong reveals a lot about Super Mutant culture in his dialouge. Both in his companion "admires you" talks, and his passing dialouge. From parts of it, it seems that Super Mutants are the only group that is actually communist, not the socialism of the Soviet Union or China. Great video Radking, really hope you keep this series up for other types of enemies!
I do wanted to point out a few things about the molecular relay: loading screens suggest that it was completed "nearly a hundred years ago", which would point towards sometime AFTER 2187.
This can be problematic because not only the FEV project itself started on 2178, but in 2180 the Minutemen made one of their greatest achievements: they defended Diamond City from a large Super Mutant attack.
In other words, it is suggested that before the molecular relay was actually functional, the Institute releasing Super Mutants in such large numbers that they became a threat to Diamond City, and all these mutants were... for the lack of a better term... manually released from the Institute directly.
By the way, I have been wondering if there might have been an exodus of Capital Wasteland Super Mutants after the events of FO3, possibly after 2282:
-In FO3 we find out that Vault 87 has finally ran out of FEV (the tanks are indicated to be fully depleted), which is why the Super Mutants are looking for the location of other vaults with the hope of finding more "green stuff".
-This means that at the latest, by the time the Lone Wanderer enters Vault 87, the Super Mutants have lost the ability to increase their numbers, in other words, from that point forward their numbers can only diminish as they continue engaging threats like the BoS.
-In 2282 Arthur Maxson killed Shepherd, a Super Mutant leader "who was attempting to re-organize the Capital Wasteland's Super Mutants", according to BoS records on the Prydwen.
-My guess is that things must have gotten really bad between 2277-2282 and Shepherd made one last push to bring together the remaining mutants, but ultimately failed.
-This could further suggest that the Super Mutant threat in the Capital Wasteland finally began dying down after this event, which would finally enable the BoS to build up their strength and in turn enable their expedition to the Commonwealth in 2287.
Do you think some Super Mutants from the Capital Wasteland could have ended up in the Commonwealth afterwards?
