The symbolism of it seemed so intentional that, during volume 3, I theorized that it was a teaser for some sort of ancient Grimm god, and would end up being the big bad of the series.
Honestly I like V3's opening song, though I usually listen to every genre. I can see they used the motif of a slow, microtonal descent from C to Bb to portray the events that happened in the volume. The pickup into the hook in the middle is slightly addictive I won't lie. I can agree that it's REALLY edgy, but I can see where they were trying to go with it. I actually enjoy the background filler vocals that distort the main lyrics. As for the pace, I'd say at times it does seem like she's lagging behind and/or slowing down and falling behind the pace but I know that that's actually a technique used, especially in this kind of setting, to create a sense of discomfort. I will say, I don't enjoy bashing on people trying out a new style of music... I never saw rwby as something that ever warranted having a kickass soundtrack like the first season introduced. The fact that we got music this good for nothing but our attention was enough for me. There's an argument that the song had planning and thought behind it, but the result was something that was put under the harsher light of subjectivity than others. I will admit though, the animation... oof. There's a reason I don't disagree with its placement on the list. Let's just say it was foreshadowing the animation style of "put as little character and individuality in their movements as possible" that's seen from the future seasons. Edit: IF I SEE ONE MORE FUCKING WEAPON TWIRL I'M GONNA THROW UP I STG.
I disagree with lots of the placements, I would personally place the later openings waaay higher, but it's still a great review. I like the way you were thorough on your analysis without throwing out technical mumbo jumbo that literally no one understands what it means, like a lot of music reviewers do. And it was pretty funny at times too! great vid, now I'm off to listen to Rising on repeat untill it's time for work lol
Something that I’ve always thought was really cool was that the music from RWBY was what actually got me into the show. I was in middle school, listening to Apple Radio (remember when that was a thing? XD) and This Will Be The Day l popped up, and it started my obsession with the show.
I don’t really have a favorite or least favorite RWBY intro. They never have stuck out to me. Real talk, though, the monkeys banging on pots and pans in that clip of Tarzan fucking slaps. Favorite opening of a show is Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Part 4.
Yo, when I was getting the video from that monkey song I just ended up jamming out to the whole thing! Also GOOD answer! (though, FMA Brotherhood part 2 is my personal favorite!)
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 it’s such a fun clip. Part 2 is pretty good, that is my number 2. Part 5 is my least favorite, song is just two slow for my liking.
Let’s Just Live is my current favorite opening specifically cause of its lyrical content. It was a song that not only was just a strong edition to the show but it actually picked me up and kept me going through a very hard time. It’s right up there with Time to Say Goodbye for me as a song ❤️

I love V3's opening theme so much and after I finished this vid it was the only song stuck in my head. In this one instance I'll own up to my shit taste.
I like when It falls, but..it seems that a war is about to begin, that this volume is full of battles and losses, and blood and tragedy. Actually.....a school is petrified and Phyrra dies. the End.
Here's my personal ranking; 8: For Every Life (same issues with op 7 & 6 but these last 3 season op's just make RWBY look like generic anime trash... not aided by the fact that trust in loves finale shot looks like it was ripped straight from one of the MHA op's. Also season 8 was so boring and forgettable for me that it seeped into the OP as well. I actually had to look it up again just to see if it was any good or not. that's how forgettable it was) 1/10 7: Trust in Love (I only remember the last line of lyrics spoken in this op... everything else is forgettable) 2/10 6: When it falls (I like the song but this op has FUGLY animation... I wish RT switched to mixer instead of miya when they dropped poser, but I'm not in charge so whatever) 3/10 5: The Triumph (song is alright and it does do a good job at selling a really bad season... everyone looks bored and uninterested in anything that is going on) 3/10 4: Rising (Good song, animation is cleaned up dramatically. However; the op REALLY does spoil so many things in the season proper) 3/10 3: Lets just live (okay, This one is my personal favorite... but its not THE best. I love how the animation and music work well with each other in this op. Also that tyrian observation you made was very eye opening to say the least. really does put season 4 into a new perspective) 6/10 2: Time to say goodbye (Amazing song with animation that really pushes Poser to its limits. the only thing holding this op back is the typical "things that show up in the op but not the show" problem. I really love this op) 9/10 1: This will be the day (ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. Perfect song, grate animation and really gets you HYPED to watch the next episode. whenever someone brings up RWBY in conversation, THIS is what starts playing in the back of my mind and that image of ruby's silhouette in front of the sun.... moon.... light.... whatever it is, will always be what I think of when I remember my good times watching RWBY.) thank you for reading.
Woo! Adam is going to kill Blake! Dance time! ...Volume 4 certainly made me root for that happening, so, maybe someone editing the opening quietly inserted subliminal messaging?
Man, that volume 2 ending definitely would work perfectly with the Volume 1 end signature pose of Ruby. Maybe if they did that it would really stick and do every volume... would be cool. While I don't agree too much ranking (just the music) I agree with the ranking itself, some visuals are weird or don't fit the songs. Also what the fuck is Ironwood's face at 21:58 ? Like seriously what the fuck is that model what I never noticed that what
Fun fact, the fall of beacon is eluded to in thile season 2 opening. The school is on fire when the girls are standing dramatically with the partial effects
When i watched rwby for the first time, i remember going in at volume 3 thinking "aww, i won't get to start each episode with that catchy song anymore :(( (vol 2's opening) then when i reached the part in the volume where they used Time To Say Goodbye as the background music for their Grimm Eclipse ads, it always fills me with so much joy, then when the ad is over and it cuts back to my least favorite opening When It Falls i always feel so genuinely upset, like a parent taking away their kid's toy xD
At first I didn't really like "when it falls" too, but after listening to it more I actually liked it a lot. Though I can completely see why most people don't
Man, i can really agree with you on all of this. Your are not only valid, meaning i can't judge or blame you for your choices, but also really giving the ones that have their mistakes some love and space forgiving them!
V6 is my favourite opening, closely followed by V4. My least favourite is V3 because the song sounds like an angry customer in a retail store you work in, yelling at you about an incorrectly labelled item and demanding to speak to your supervisor.
V3: The worst song and very boring visuals. Some shots are good and I appreciate the way to show how dark the volume was. V4: the worst visuals and don't care about the song. The only good shots were Yang and the villains but other than that it's not that good. V5: The most boring one and a song don't care about. Nothing interested me in it after I saw it twice and skipped to the ep. V7: A really good song, some good scenes in it, the hints in it have some fun in it too. V1: A good way to introduce the show and a very good song despite not hearing this will be the day that much. V6: The best song with great scenes for V6 events. V2: Third favourite song and nice transactions despite being short. V8: Okay, this intro had me thinking because of how genius it was. The song had some good hints and great to listen to. The visuals are a chef kiss with love to it. Don't know what they were thinking of making the intro but keep it guys. I don't expect V9 to be as good as V8 in the visuals and hints but I won't mind it that much.
There is something magical about listening to you talk about the openings, I love it XDD I do disagree with some things but overall, nice video as always!
My friends told me I was crazy for liking For Every Life over the other intros. But like you put the imagery and stuff is just so cool! It’s also my second favorite song in the show next to Red like Roses Pt. 1&2 I enjoyed the video!
My favourite opening will always be the full length Volume 1 intro. The first episode had already got me hooked, but when that visual of Ruby kneeling to her mother's grave came on in conjunction with that guitar and those lyrics was absolutely chilling and I could instantly tell that this series was going to be something special for me
I can’t believe you didn’t mention the “Happy Ever After”/“Happy Never Again” flashes at the end of For all Lives, that was the most intriguing and eye catching part for me when I was watching the volume
It felt a little tryhard for me. The lyrics and such have always been 'we're going to lose, things will be bad forever, you're supposed to be sad' at times, but that bit just felt a bit juvenile in execution.
The MOMENT you revealed Volume 8 to be your #2 spot, I began pumping my fist in the air and whisper-cheering (since it was literally around midnight) because the Volume 2 opening is my favorite as well! I guess I don’t really know what feels like anime, but the 2nd opening feels the most anime to me, and I love the music and the visuals as well. It’s literally one of the things that pulled me into watching RWBY! The fact that it’s short possibly helps to give me the feeling of never seeing enough of it 😄 Another shared opinion is the 3rd opening being the least favorite. The music just reeeeally didn’t do it for me, and felt a bit sloppy. Loved this video and how you go in-depth into all of the intros! There were plenty of things that you pointed out that I didn’t catch 😁 (Edit) I also laughed out loud at the part in the Volume 2 opening with the vibrating image of The Rock while the music blares XD
I personally enjoy when it falls! That's just my music taste tbh but I get where you're coming from. My favorite part of the visuals as an editor is that those glamour shots give me good clips for AMVs 😂 But all the points you made on that one specifically (especially spoiling Winter and Qrow and ESPECIALLY WEISS VS EMERALD WHEN IS IT GONNA HAPPEN OH I GUESS NEVER CUS SHES GOOD NOW) Anyways those are mostly positives and negatives on Volume 3
I agree with a song being lower in the ranking for not being able to hear the words in the actual song. season 3 was low on my list as well. also the bored shots in the intro were a choice alright. Come to think of it sometimes I just let the intro play while I check something in another tab as I wait for the show proper to start really
I love your RWBY themed analysis videos. This one was amazing to watch and made me nostalgic. I hope Volume 9 and onward give us as good intros as vl8 and 2!
I was so excited to see the Volume 2 OP ranked #1 on your list. It's my favorite OP as well and I have absolutely worn out the full version bc of listening to it on repeat so often. Good choice, and great list!
Honestly time to say goodbye has been my favourite since I first saw it but volume 8 has become my favourite since the journey all of the RWBY cast has gone on, hits so hard with the line _we said goodbye, to all the things we love_ it's just 👌 for me. Can't wait for Volume 8 ost to be released.
Honestly I just wanna say I overlooked most of this, and would have never thought to go into detail on it, so thanks for covering this, and bringing light to how the show can actively improve! And tips on what to do/ what not to do :)
There is no way you think penny being in the opening spoils her being alive, they show her in the very first episode of the volume and show the opening at the end.
I liked watching this while I was on my way home, gotta find more stuff like this. It was nice not having to hop from one song to another I've heard fifty times over. Thanks for this. ❤
Honestly this is incredible! I had such a good time watching you analyse all of these, and it really reminded me just how much hype the Intros can really lend to the seasons. Those first two were just so gooooood.
Wow I’m shocked by how similar our rankings are, although when it falls hitting so low did kinda hurt haha For me I’d switch v8 and v1, and move v3 up to after v6, making v7 last. So like v2, v1, v8, v6, v3, v4, v5, v7
There's something with the expressions and faces of the characters that imo changed to the worse after they changed animation program. I really miss that, especially with Qrow.
I'm the opposite when it comes to openings. I appreciate visuals more than the music and I especially appreciate when the visuals work with the song really well. I definitely would have placed the openings myself in a different order but I also agree with your criticism on them.
The Penny "spoiler" isn't a spoiler because the first episode the intro is always at the end (probably to avoid the main spoilers of a new volume introduced by the first episode) and they meet her in the first episode, don't they?
Yes but some people like to watch the opening before they watch the episode. Especially if the opening is posted to TH-cam before the episode becomes available for non-first members to watch.
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 Yeah but that's not true Volume 7 premiered for first members on the 2nd (the opening was on the 11th) RWBY episodes release for the public a week after for the public. That would be the 9th. Now if my maths and your maths are the same that sound be before the 11th.
I'm so glad im not the only one who loves Rising from #6. The futurish sound from the synth goes so well with the first time we see Atlas operating at their own foothold. My favorite intro overall, but it makes sense that it's 4th on the list
I don’t like the volume 5 opening in how the music, while nice, and the opening itself being decent, doesn’t match well when put together. Like you pointed out with the I won’t die lyric part. Again, still pretty good in some areas, the beginning and end in particular, but the song and intro don’t match at all. I agree with a lot of this list, great video critter!
I wasn't expecting three to be first up, but it actually makes sense after the analysis. I personally like it, but maybe that's in part because three is my favorite volume as a whole. As for volume two's opening, absolutely love it. I love how it builds the theme of shit starting to get serious and an impending storm on the horizon.
You put so much thought into the visuals of the opening and the symbolism said visuals entail... To be honest, a lot of these are things I never really thought about too much. I don't like the volume 1 op though, simply because the graphics (and the rest of the volume) have this blur/bloom effect or whatever you call it that I find super obnoxious; it makes me feel like my vision from my eyes is blurry when that's not the case.
Volume 7’s opening is without a doubt my absolute favorite. Trust love is my favorite op and I think that the visuals were innovative and fantastic, it felt fresh and new.
Now that I think about it, if I could go for a different type of opening for RWBY, I'd go for a softer one like Gankutsuou or Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Mostly because I'd like to hear Casey's voice in a more natural range, and because I like instrumentals. On a very tangent, have you ever considered going in-depth talking about the morals and ethics of Team RWBY throughout the show? This is due to potential Protagonist Centered Morality thing.
im really not sure why but the part at 23:35 when your thinking its a synth board and then just the animation of wigglign across the screen and then : THATS SOME GOOD SHIT. had me wheezing XD

"Who are you? WHO _ARE_ YOU??"
Me at the random girl in the first Pokémon opening
"When It Falls" is a song meant for Cinder, so it is supposed to sound off compared to the rest
For As much as I disagree with it. This shit was actually funny. Good vid. Don't get salty ppl
Man, this just reminded me of how much better the fights looked when Monty was still alive. He clearly did a lot of the work on the V1 & V2 openings.
I believe he also planned more out but they never went with it :/
Correction: Ruby did fight Cinder in volume 2
Same here
I don’t really have a favorite or least favorite RWBY intro.
I just love part 1 so much tbh
@@ferryn6877 that’s a good one too
God, FMA brotherhood opening part 4 is so iconic honestly, most of the time I would rewatch it at least 3 time and then I watch the episode.
I enjoyed the video a lot. I agree and disagree with some of your points but it's okay. Great job.
even after 7 seasons have passed, Time to Say Goodbye is still best opening. the flow of animation, music, and hype it brings is just👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Let’s Just Live is my current favorite opening specifically cause of its lyrical content. It was a song that not only was just a strong edition to the show but it actually picked me up and kept me going through a very hard time. It’s right up there with Time to Say Goodbye for me as a song ❤️
The part with the synth shaking violently made me laugh hard for some reasons. Great vid!!!
*My favorite RWBY OP from the most liked to the least. MUSIC Version.*
*1)* Rising.
*2)* Trust Love.
*3)* Time to Say Goodbye.
*4)* From Every Life. V8.
*5)* This Will Be the Day.
*6)* When It Falls.
*7)* Let's just live.
*8)* Thriump.
*My favorite RWBY OP from the most liked to the least. Animation and visual.*
*Most liked:* Vol. 8 / Vol. 1 / Vol. 6 / Vol. 7
*Least liked:* Vol. 3 / Vol. 4 / Vol. 5
I love V3's opening theme so much and after I finished this vid it was the only song stuck in my head. In this one instance I'll own up to my shit taste.
I like when It falls, but..it seems that a war is about to begin, that this volume is full of battles and losses, and blood and tragedy. Actually.....a school is petrified and Phyrra dies. the End.
Yay, my favorite is number 1XD. Definitely worth the wait
Yes and I hate that they are getting longer
Here's my personal ranking;
8: For Every Life (same issues with op 7 & 6 but these last 3 season op's just make RWBY look like generic anime trash... not aided by the fact that trust in loves finale shot looks like it was ripped straight from one of the MHA op's. Also season 8 was so boring and forgettable for me that it seeped into the OP as well. I actually had to look it up again just to see if it was any good or not. that's how forgettable it was) 1/10
7: Trust in Love (I only remember the last line of lyrics spoken in this op... everything else is forgettable) 2/10
6: When it falls (I like the song but this op has FUGLY animation... I wish RT switched to mixer instead of miya when they dropped poser, but I'm not in charge so whatever) 3/10
5: The Triumph (song is alright and it does do a good job at selling a really bad season... everyone looks bored and uninterested in anything that is going on) 3/10
4: Rising (Good song, animation is cleaned up dramatically. However; the op REALLY does spoil so many things in the season proper) 3/10
3: Lets just live (okay, This one is my personal favorite... but its not THE best. I love how the animation and music work well with each other in this op. Also that tyrian observation you made was very eye opening to say the least. really does put season 4 into a new perspective) 6/10
2: Time to say goodbye (Amazing song with animation that really pushes Poser to its limits. the only thing holding this op back is the typical "things that show up in the op but not the show" problem. I really love this op) 9/10
1: This will be the day (ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. Perfect song, grate animation and really gets you HYPED to watch the next episode. whenever someone brings up RWBY in conversation, THIS is what starts playing in the back of my mind and that image of ruby's silhouette in front of the sun.... moon.... light.... whatever it is, will always be what I think of when I remember my good times watching RWBY.)
thank you for reading.
Same for mine
I disagree with some of these placements but when you said "fugly animation", I died 😂😂
These ratings are mad harsh
Woo! Adam is going to kill Blake! Dance time! ...Volume 4 certainly made me root for that happening, so, maybe someone editing the opening quietly inserted subliminal messaging?
WHO ELSE IS MAD THAT WE HAVEN'T SEEN WEISS VS EMERALD YET😭😭😭
"The washing machine of death..." IM SCREAMING!!
Like seriously what the fuck is that model what I never noticed that what
When it falls is literally my favourite intro, I laughed so hard immediately.
Your pfp fits that XD
I totally feel you XD
At first I didn't really like "when it falls" too, but after listening to it more I actually liked it a lot. Though I can completely see why most people don't
A 46 min video of rwby by judgemental critter?
HELL FREAKING YES
also thank god vol 5 isnt the worst
Man, i can really agree with you on all of this. Your are not only valid, meaning i can't judge or blame you for your choices, but also really giving the ones that have their mistakes some love and space forgiving them!
For Every Life might be my favourite opening song, along with Lets Just Live. I can't wait for the full version to come out
1:29
Worst to best:
2:04 - Vol 3
7:22 - Vol 7
13:03 - Vol 5
16:30 - Vol 4
(20:09
20:54
22:03)
23:19 - Vol 6
28:45 - Vol 1
31:51 - Vol 8
V6 is my favourite opening, closely followed by V4.
My least favourite is V3 because the song sounds like an angry customer in a retail store you work in, yelling at you about an incorrectly labelled item and demanding to speak to your supervisor.
I love to see how more people believe in Time to Say Goodbye supremacy
There is something magical about listening to you talk about the openings, I love it XDD
I do disagree with some things but overall, nice video as always!
The fact that it’s short possibly helps to give me the feeling of never seeing enough of it 😄
Another shared opinion is the 3rd opening being the least favorite. The music just reeeeally didn’t do it for me, and felt a bit sloppy. Loved this video and how you go in-depth into all of the intros! There were plenty of things that you pointed out that I didn’t catch 😁
(Edit) I also laughed out loud at the part in the Volume 2 opening with the vibrating image of The Rock while the music blares XD
I personally enjoy when it falls! That's just my music taste tbh but I get where you're coming from. My favorite part of the visuals as an editor is that those glamour shots give me good clips for AMVs 😂 But all the points you made on that one specifically (especially spoiling Winter and Qrow and ESPECIALLY WEISS VS EMERALD WHEN IS IT GONNA HAPPEN
OH I GUESS NEVER CUS SHES GOOD NOW)
Anyways those are mostly positives and negatives on Volume 3
I lost it the more you tore into that final shot in V7's opening, omg that was so funny
Yo I love the criticism on this. I'm a rock and metal guy so even tho I don't agree with the comments, I thought they were funny
Your explanation on Volume 8 Opening made me appreciate more about Volume 8
The part you got stuck in your head for vol.8 is the same for me
"maybe its red like roses" is probably the most unpleasant thing my ears have ever heard
Still better than the Crazy Bus theme
Who kisses the morning man
I've never really played attention to RWBY opening so this is the most I've ever thought about them
I didn’t like “When It Falls” at first but after rewatching it, I really enjoy it! I feel it goes really well with what is to happen in the volume😅
To be fair with the Penny spoiler in volume 7, they didn’t show the OP in episode 1 at the beginning: they used it at the end just before the credits.
I liked that when Winter and Weiss kinda walk by eachothers, like showing again that they are in different sides, also Winters facial expression.
Honestly this is incredible! I had such a good time watching you analyse all of these, and it really reminded me just how much hype the Intros can really lend to the seasons. Those first two were just so gooooood.
I mostly disagree with you on this, but I respect your opinion
My personal favorites are either vol 1 and vol 2
I hope vol 9 intro has summer rose in it.
Wow I’m shocked by how similar our rankings are, although when it falls hitting so low did kinda hurt haha
For me I’d switch v8 and v1, and move v3 up to after v6, making v7 last. So like v2, v1, v8, v6, v3, v4, v5, v7
Love how you kept “series created by monty oum” at the end of each one you ranked 10/10 editing right there🙂
There's something with the expressions and faces of the characters that imo changed to the worse after they changed animation program. I really miss that, especially with Qrow.
The top recommended video for this is Time To Say Goodbye, I think you made a lot of people want to go rewatch the opening.
I’m just praying that Time to say Goodbye is appreciated 😭 🙏🏾
I'm the opposite when it comes to openings. I appreciate visuals more than the music and I especially appreciate when the visuals work with the song really well. I definitely would have placed the openings myself in a different order but I also agree with your criticism on them.
My favorite RWBY opening is Volume 3
Good visuals
Decent song
@@ragingmonkeycritic yeah
My list is super close to yours. I would just switch eight and two
I don’t like the volume 5 opening in how the music, while nice, and the opening itself being decent, doesn’t match well when put together. Like you pointed out with the I won’t die lyric part. Again, still pretty good in some areas, the beginning and end in particular, but the song and intro don’t match at all. I agree with a lot of this list, great video critter!
I thought the “This Will Be The Day” line was
victory is inescapable
or
victory is innocent but bold
not
victory in a simple soul
I wasn't expecting three to be first up, but it actually makes sense after the analysis. I personally like it, but maybe that's in part because three is my favorite volume as a whole. As for volume two's opening, absolutely love it. I love how it builds the theme of shit starting to get serious and an impending storm on the horizon.
I was so upset to see Vol2 at number one, but then I saw the song and realized I mixed up Vol3 and 2 up lol
I always thought volume 6 had the best opening. It's the most refreshing imo
vol7 intro is the best one in my oppinion but i liked hearing someone elses thoughts👍
Volume 7’s opening is without a doubt my absolute favorite. Trust love is my favorite op and I think that the visuals were innovative and fantastic, it felt fresh and new.
42:29 I couldn't breathe I was laughing to hard
Calling Madoka's opening boring and skipping it is outrageous! I used to love to sing along with it >:c
Pyra's fight stuff in volume 2's opening actually shows her semblance
im really not sure why but the part at 23:35 when your thinking its a synth board and then just the animation of wigglign across the screen and then : THATS SOME GOOD SHIT. had me wheezing XD
