I think Oscar was introduced because show liked having Jaune in that role of "regular relatable kid who grows in strength and learns from much cooler characters around him" so much that it had to create a whole new character for it all over again

One problem CRWBY has, is that when they write characters, they do it with one thing in mind. One thing that must be done, so they make a character for that.
The problem of that is, that once they have done that one thing, CRWBY doesn’t know what else to do with them.
So they just stand around doing nothing, until they (maybe) get one other thing to do in another season.
So, rather than getting all they can out of the existing cast, they just keep inventing new characters.
It’s as if you bought a new mug, whenever you want a drink.
You could just clean the ones you already have and reuse them, but you’re to lazy to do that and instead just clutter your kitchen with useless mugs

      YES. 100%
This is a point I plan on covering sometime in the future in regards to RWBY's "cast is too big" problem, and the best examples I have to really hammer this home is Sun and Cardin.
"We want a bully character!" So here's a stereotypical bully.
"We want a cool guy character!" So here's a stereotypical cool guy.
The problem only gets worse when it comes to their teams. Since they were designed with only 1 character trait in mind, the rest of their teams tend to just be the same exact thing.
Cardin is a bully, so here's his team of other bully's.
Sun is a cool guy, so here's his team of cool guys.

@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 it’s also a big part of the reason, why many of their characters tend to overstay their welcome and feel useless. Even main ones,
Blake is just there, so that a Faunus with the White Fang plot can happen. Once that’s done she has nothing to do.
Same with Yang. Who has her arm cut off, so that revenge plot can happen.
Ren and Nora exist so that they can fall in love.
Oscar exists, so that reincarnation can exist.
And once they did that, they had nothing to do for a while, because they weren’t made with anything else in mind.
Until Yang and Blake could be Bumblebee and Ren could get angry at Ruby.
It’s a big flaw of the writers.

After watching: Jaune being the new Ozpin would have made sense. The whole point of Joan of Arc the character Jaune is based on, was that she heard the voice of a spirit in her head and went out to War. Not to mention, Jaune is a character that always dreamed of being a Hero, so the idea of him possessed by the greatest Hero who ever lived, aka the original Hero is a great twist because he'd get his dream but realize it's not all its cracked up to be. He finally gets exactly what he wants only with the huge downside of him having to come to terms with his mind being erased. It's a solid story with an established character, that also fits into the character's motivation, the mythology of the character's inspiration, and provides a great character arc and internal conflict. Imo this is so perfectly set up I'm convinced that they scrapped it at the last minute and had to invent Oscar in a hurry.

Its ironic. Oscar's biggest fear is that he is nothing more than a vessel for the next Ozma incarnation. That all his personality & character will be overwritten and that his relationshops & development shall mean nothing, in the long-run. Is this not how the story treats him? Someone who has no character other than being a blank slate, the next vessel for Ozma and (arguably) a love interest for Ruby.

Sometimes I really wonder what the writers think because Oscar being created to be Ozma's next incarnation has made the whole "I don't wanna be the next incarnation" dilemma makes it so hard to feel bad for Oscar because the merge is the only place his story can go there's nothing else to look forward to with Oscar's character It's incredible the writers want us to care about Oscar and his situation when the writers don't seem to care enough about Oscar to give him anything to do besides merge with Ozpin

@@brianford4914 Oh definitely. There are no other motivations or goals that Oscar (specifically) has. I get the point was that he was thrusted into the conflict but he wanted for nothing beforehand, so it is difficult to care about anything else with him. The blank slate-ness has left him empty and with no reason to care about him. I'd argue that most of the main cast have nothing to do, other than fight off Salem. Blake killed Adam & restored the White Fang. Yang got over Raven. Weiss took down Jacque and Atlas fell. A large chunk of the cast now having nothing to do, in the main story. This means that Oscar will have to fight for screen time, for anything other than the merge.

I find it so weird that the ONLY one who cares that Oscar might cease to exist is Oscar himself. When they heard Ozpin's past NO ONE was like "Is Oscar gonna be okay?" It's so telling that the only one who brings up the merge is Oscar. It's another reason I don't really like the heroes because they say they're friends with him but they don't really seem to care about his well being. Like it would honestly make the show more interesting to have the other characters care about Oscar's merge with Ozpin. Maybe they would think of plans to separate the two like, asking the lamp if there's a way to stop the merge or using the staff to do some Penny shit and put Ozpin in a new body. Hell, I even had a theory that the relic of destruction may be able to destroy souls and maybe it can be used to like erase Ozpin's soul but no the merge is solely Oscar's problem and it's so weird because it feels like everyone just doesn't care and just sees the merge as inevitable.

But then your comrades ignore everything about what you said except for the help part.

Honestly with the show establishing you can just give someone a new human body it basically removes all the drama of Oscar's mind being merged with Ozpin. They literally could have just gotten a new body for Ozpin and it would have been far more beneficial to just let Ozpin have a new body so he can do his Ozpin things while Oscar gets to keep his mind. Hell it might have even been a big help in talking to Ironwood even if they were assassinating his character in Volume 8 cause Ozpin himself might be able to talk to him better than anyone else. But that thought probably didn't even cross the minds of the writers at all given that they seemingly created the whole plot point of the staff to get Penny a human body and create the portals and force a situation where Volume 9 happened.

I actually think having Ozpin inhabit Jaune would have been such a good character choice. It would have happened back when the "Jaune is a self insert" stuff was pretty limited (not non-existent, but it's certainly grown with each passing season), it would have kept the the teams shorter, and it would have been such a good twist reveal in the middle of a tense but otherwise listing arc. Most importantly, it would have given two of our main male leads HUGE beef.
Picture this; It's season 4, we have the Jaune training in the woods scene, but, instead of just his normal swordplay, he exhibits some strange extra abilities. Ruby notices, and is concerned, but doesn't bring it up because she was spying on him, so she just goes back to bed. We also get an establishing shot that Qrow also sees it, so that will come into play later. Fast Forward to the Tyrian fight. Jaune pulls off some semblance move no one can explain, which saves the group but also confuses them, except Tyrian who laughs like he knows something the party doesn't (hell, in the original scene, Tyrian says that Jaune specifically interests him. What if he recognizes something about the aura pattern that tips him off this *could* be an Ozpin "echo" [we'll get to that distinction later]). Qrow dives in to save the party, episode proceeds as normal, Qrow explains a bunch of stuff as usual, and he keeps giving Jaune funny looks, but he's too ill to explain more.
Later, Qrow goes down to poison, and Jaune and Ruby help carry him to the village where they get attacked by the Nuckelavee in Kuroyuri. The fight is already pretty stacked, but at one point Jaune loses his sword and, in a moment of desperation, grabs Ozpin's staff from Qrow's unconscious body. Surprisingly, he does pretty well with it, taking it up effectively first with his shield, and then later duel wielding with his sword, shield on his back to block attacks with his motions. It's almost like a totally different character (heerheerheer) is fighting, and in the end Jaune collapses and no one really has time to question him about it as the Airship shows up and they all pile into it.
The end credit scene for that episode is Jaune, feeling better, visiting Qrow, feeling "better," to give him the staff back, which ends with him closing his hand around Jaune's and pushing the staff back towards him, saying. "No, you hold on to it. He's gonna want to have it close by when he starts coming back." This is going to lead to a confused and surprised look from Jaune, and then smash-cut to black.
Season 5 now has Qrow explain that there are tons of people in Remnant who carry an "echo" of Ozpin (i.e, Ozma), the first wizard (which we learn later isn't actually true). When Oz dies, those echoes resonate for a moment, and then his soul finds its way to one of those echoes and begins to merge with it. It's not always the closest, or the strongest, or even one Oz knows, but he does seem to have some minor influence over it; usually it relates to someone he has a serious emotional connection to. For some reason, he was deeply emotionally connected to Jaune at that moment, and while we don't know why, eventually Ozpin will resurface in Jaune's mind (like they have with Oscar), and after some time the roles will switch, with Oz taking the lead and Jaune remaining as a presence in his mind. After a few more years, the two will end up as one mind, joining the many others that make up Oz. Obviously, Jaune isn't happy about the idea of becoming Oz, or losing control of himself, or all this magic stuff. What's worse, he can't think of a single thing that would connect them, because he is secretly harboring a huge resentment to him... it is revealed here that Jaune blames Ozpin for Pyrrha's death. Not alone, obviously, he hates Cinder as well, but if not for all this destiny stuff she might still be alive, he feels.
This is our major conflict leading into the next few seasons, as far as the Oz/Jaune arcs are concerned. Jaune harbors resentment to a returning Oz, but the magic and the combat skill he gains by letting Oz take the wheel are important to Jaune, who has wanted to get stronger for a long time. Once the true history of Oz comes out, it's actually Jaune, who is separated from Ren and Nora (we also lose Weiss here, for reasons I will explain in a minute) who beats himself up because he is trying to find a way to hurt Oz, leading to the team and Qrow watching in confusion and horror as he screams Oz into submission. We then get Ruby, Jaune, Maria, Qrow, Blake, and Yang travelling through the snow, and we emphasize each of the girls present, and Qrow, getting the chance to talk to Jaune, as well as Ruby, about Oz's deception and what it means for their goals in the future.
This culminates with Ren taking Jaune's place in attacking Jaune/Ozpin when they get to town, the truth causing his normally calm demeanor to snap and leading to the start of the friction between him and Jaune in the Atlas Seasons. We also get Weiss being *IN* the town for a couple days, trying literally everything she could before the rest of RWBY arrived to get them to Atlas, and being blocked at every level by all kinds of issues; someone is deliberately blocking their attempts to get back (this later turns out to be Adam, using White Fang resources to tie up their channels, to force them to act rashly and open his shot at Blake, making him slightly more menacing before he dies). That also makes their "we have to steal an airship" plan marginally less insane.
Lastly, we have the big Pyrrah statue scene, but instead of random red-head showing up, it is a chance for Ozpin and Jaune to talk, leading to the reveal that what brought them together was the loss of someone dear to them; for Jaune, it was Pyrrah, and for Ozpin, it was the Autumn maiden. He failed her, just as Jaune felt he failed Pyrrah, and that moment of defiant sadness was what cause their souls to resonate. In the end, Jaune doesn't accept that he will merge with Ozpin, but he does forgive him for Pyrrah, and he expects Oz to actually be open with him, if they are going to make this work, somehow.
However, I also do really like Celtic Phoenix's Roman idea. I had only considered Jaune right now, after you brought it up, and just had to get my ideas for it out of my head. Great video, great dive into the topic, can't wait for the next one ^.^

I really like that it feels like a actual arc for a character. How I see the arcs in the series are: things happen, they maybe mentioned once or twice and then they just sort of end. Another problem I feel is that by and large a good majority of the characters just feel kind of “there” in that they could be replaced by bags of rice and nothing would really change.
Celtic’s idea to have Roman be Oz’s next host was good as not only does it tie into Ozpin’s (supposed) moral grayness but Roman actually has charm.

Real talk? I'm pretty much convinced at this point that the "Why?" as to why Oscar exists is simply because of Jaune's reception.
It feels clear, when you think about it, that they MUST have intended for Jaune to be Ozpin's next reincarnation. The idea would even fit the historical character that Jaune is based on, Joan of Ark, given that she was said to "hear voices in her head", and that's without mentioning how there were lots of possible "hints" for a connection between Jaune and Ozpin established before, like the fact that Ozpin likely let Jaune sneak into Beacon despite knowing his credentials were faked, or how the "King of Vale" (who was clearly another one of Ozpin's past lives) wielded a sword that was probably, at some point, meant to be the very same sword that Jaune is currently wielding.
But somewhere down the line, the writers realized that if they elevated Jaune's importance THAT much, given that the show nowadays isn't even about RWBY, but about the eternal war between Ozma and Salem (with RWBY & Co just being bystanders caught in the action at best), making Jaune basically the most plot-central character of the show... it would have been IMPOSSIBLE to refute any longer that he IS the real "Main Character" of the show and the only character the writers ever really care to write about.
The fact that Jaune's reception even in early volumes was mixed at best was also likely another contributing factor to this "wake up call", so they completely aborted the whole "Let's make Jaune the next reincarnation of Ozpin/Ozma", and instead just... made up a completely new character - likely on a rush, considering how BARREN Oscar's background is - to fill in the spot.
And that's how we ended up where we are...

Another way to do this is to have a devouted Oscar at first be overjoyed to have been chosen to be a god's new vessel! He sees it as a holy duty, a good thing. He listens to Ozma and does exactly as he says without even thinking about it.
Slowly, as Ozma gains more control over Oscar's body, he starts to have doubts (would be best if most of their thoughts were still separate so Ozma doesn't immediately notice).
Ozma starts taking control more often, and Oscar is left to observe his own body, completely powerless. When he's in control he might turn to speak to someone, but Ozma decides that what he's about to say shouldn't be said and take over.
All Oscar can do is scream in his own head while Ozma pretends to be him.
Even more time passes and Oscar starts fading in and out of consciousness, passing out and waking up days or even weeks later, with no idea where he is or what is going on.
He fights for any scrap of control and manages to beg RWBY to save him. This also gives them actual motivation to keep secrets from Ironwood about the relics, because they want to try to use them to save Oscar and either move Ozma to an empty vessel, or destroy him completely.

With the implications of him training at night, the fight with Qrow & Tyrian, and that small moment before the Nuck fight would have all linked up well to maybe have Qrow open up to Juane a bit and offer to train in the aura slash we see him try at night and that Qrow does against Winter and Tyrian. All because Qrow sees how Jaune wants/has improved when watching him and Oscar sparring but can see the gap in skill closing as Oscar inherits Oz's techniques but not aura reserves and control, being tied to the individual and take longer to train, as Oscar still tires out way before Jaune. Knowing this however with him being humbled by his own rushed training experience Jaune congratulates Oscar on his progress not letting slip his worries until Oscar goes to rest giving Qrow an opportunity to teach him how to use his abundance of aura and physical strength into a move that Jaune can do more often and possibly stronger than he does with time.

Plus he's the only one who's ever successfully tried something other than fight.. which was be diplomatic and just use his words to better a situation. I can't see Yang, Blake or Weiss doing that. Actually violence is usually the first thing they turn to.

Have him just be a secondary character for a season or two, making his way through remnants, possibly in the company of other people, so as to avoid making the audience too suspicious of him, and then show him doing something that he can do to support the other characters once he finally crosses paths with them. Either from there, he can integrate with the main cast and join them on their journeys and then reveal that Ozpin is inside of him, or he can split off to go do something else for another season before suddenly busting out Ozpin' fighting style in a serious moment and then revealing that Ozpin is there. You know what would have been a cute character trait for Oscar?
What if he was kind of awkward around women. Like he grew up on a farm where the only woman he talked to regularly was his aunt, and now as a teenager he's being shoved into a group with 5 girls his own age, one of whom is really big on hugs. We could then get scenes where various characters kind of interact with that trait, like Ruby thinks he's just awkward while Yang thinks him being easily flustered is the cutest thing she's ever seen. Jaune and Ren could try to help him talk to girls, but then they realize that their experience with women is like 1 a piece as he really poorly flirts with Blake or Penny.

She has PTSD, then is suddenly cured, but then she’s not cause she still gets the shakes from time to time. Despite him not giving her a reason to distrust him, especially since he’s the one that gave her her new arm. another idea that could have worked for oscar was to have him introduced in season 3 and give him some sort of development, like maybe him and his aunt were selling vegetables at the vitle festival or something like that. he could get caught up in the fall of beacon and team RWBY saved him during all that mess and maybe he lost his aunt in the fall so he was staying with ruby and yang and their dad for a short while. and like, have the development with oz like go super slow, make him think he's just going a little nuts but then slowly realises there's someone sharing his head space, and end season four on the cliff hanger that oz is back and he's in oscar's head

I think they could hopefully fix this by giving Oscar, what Ruby's role was originally meant to be. A young person given and trusted with a lot of responsibility, if we never get to see him with the kid's, let's see him being uncomfortable at adult conversations! He's quite literally incapable of being a kid again, or relating himself to the other people around him because he's having to interact with people beyond his age group or even intelligence level, he's having to abandon his childhood already to be an adult. Make him incapable of wanting to speak his thoughts about Ozpin, because he's afraid to mess up and say something that he doesn't mean. Give us Oscar's journey where he's forced to grow up, and finds himself at odds with what he wants to do, and what he needs to do.

Rest easy with your fear about needing a male protagonist, I think there’s a much simpler explanation to why they added Oscar: they needed a main protagonist that Aaron Dismuke could voice.
I remember back in the day a big deal being made over Mignogna being cast as Qrow, and equally I remember people going pretty crazy hearing he and Dismuke would be playing opposite each other again. Consider how much focus *that* pair of characters got over the series… until Volume 7 where Mignogna was replaced. Suddenly, it wasn’t as important to have the two in the same room anymore. No I’m more and more convinced it was just a play to say they brought back the original FMA Ed and Al to try and leach off a different fan base when their show was already struggling. I suspect otherwise it would have been Jaune to get Oz as it’d make the most ‘sense’ from their stand point with how they’d built him.

I always felt like Oscar should've had more character growth (then again, that goes for a lot of characters). I like the idea of a farm-hand having big dreams of seeing the world outside of the little farm he's lived on, only to be given exactly what he asked for, but not in the way he thought it would be.
In terms of something interesting/unique about the character, they could've made him a handyman of sorts: knowing his way around machinery and whatnot. But not being, exactly, leader material: he could have trouble socializing, is used to working alone, and is accustomed to shouldering the workload on their own. This could also serve as why Ozpin chose him because of these traits: a leader is often never fully understood, often has no equal to turn to, and often bears the most burden.
Overall, I'd say that Oscar has the potential to be great character--though, that goes for practically every character in this series. Personally, I never really saw him as Ruby's love interest, but rather, a reflection of her: someone once innocent and naive now placed in a situation that is way over their head that has to persevere in order of obtain some semblance of who they once wanted to be. Though, that might be me being theatrical...?

Funnily enough Oscar's my favourite character in RWBY honestly, he ticks so many boxes for me personally and has a lot of potential, but the other characters can be strangely disconnected from him and what he is going through despite him having some if the most upsetting and tragic moments and circumstances (JNR definitely feel much closer to him that RWBY, but still). I felt everyone reacting to first meeting him as 'Ozpin is back!' Was going to eventually develop into them seeing him as a kid in a tragic situation, not their former headmaster, but that doesn't seem to be the case or they haven't quite reached that realisation yet or something. The way they didn't keep an eye on him when Neopolitan was after them despite him being much younger and less experienced was hard to watch and feeds into the idea they see him as more experienced/capable than he is, and they lost the lamp because of that. There always seem to be distance between them, and no one noticing the recent changes happening in Oscar either is pretty sad.
I am still holding out hope that it is planned (since there is stuff happening in the bg, and unexplained elements) that the characters are so wrapped up in their own stuff and everything else going on that they aren't noticing, and that the writers will get the relationships and reactions from the other characters in before it's too late. At least for me Oscar on his own is doing a great job at being an interesting, sympathetic character with a good story, but right now he just feels very alone in his struggles outside speaking to Ozpin (maybe Emerald as an outsider without a team of her own will focus on him more and maybe give him the long needed support).
Edit: Also 100% agree on that lack of Ironwood confrontation at the end of the last volume, that was so disappointing :'D

There are little hints of friendship between Oscar and the others: like going to the movies with Jaune and Weiss or Yang casually leaning on him. It'd be nice to see more than that, but one could argue there's more evidence to it than friendships with, say, Ruby and Velvet. Fans routinely build up headcanons from these small interactions. I would love if Ozpin, was the last "Ozma". With Oscar being the one that, when mixed, comes out on top. Like a fight where Oscar just abjectly wins because his will to do the right thing trumps Ozma's will to do "wrong" and that tips the scale, to see oscar grow into such a potent person that when mixed with Ozma, the mixture comes out more Oscar then Ozma, and so when they die, the next incarnation isn't really becoming Ozma anymore, but instead becoming Oscar. But with how the reincarnation thing is phrased and how RWBY's writing is done... I don't think that will happen.
Somethinge else they could do is have the god of lights "so you will never be alone" be literal in the most awesome way. where it's revealed Ozma never loses his connection with the lives before his new host, Oscar can't hear it at first normally, but behind Ozma is every person he has ever been one with, all their hopes, dreams, fears, love, trust, and memories. even there expertise. A sample of the many collective wisdoms of mankind, and not "mankind" throw some fanus in there too. The real mankind. Maybe even have Ozma not know it. Like a hidden reserve that can only be tapped into when all the magic and arua and will, and light of both of them is spent. Give me a naruto esqu scean of Ozma and Oscar in the place between their two connected souls, and have all that fall away to reveal a door, or a mirror, or something that when they open or look in it, they see and know all the lives touched by ozma over the eons, they get bequeathed the will, the resolve, the aura of ALL OF THEM. 19:14 is a perfect frame for the argument. The left side of the screen is the main cast of volume 8. They could fill my living room and just to do so would require putting all the furniture outside.
A slight rant below about the cast on the whole, gets more detailed in the middle for no real reason.
RWBY has too many people in the main cast. During volume 4/5 we had team RWBY, team JNR, Qrow, Sun and then Oscar. That was kinda it. Volume 5 added Blake's parents and some villains and the cast got larger and larger until the end of Volume 5 where it shrank to team RWBY, team JNR, Qrow and Oscar. It shouldn't have expanded after but then we got so many new characters.
Maria was neat but a silver eyes exposition machine, something that even Qrow could have done. They could explain it by saying that summer mentioned it of hand when talking or training with Summer. This would have also allowed for some Qrow development, something we got but it was half baked at best and half assed at worst.
Penny didn't need to come back just to die again. We didn't really need to meet Penny's dad. The ace ops could have been designated to side character only instead of trying to treat them as main cast. Ironwood and Winter I guess were needed since they were in atlas, they would be needed for the plot. Clover being the leader of the ace ops could still be there as is but with more development since the other ace ops would be treated as side characters/Ironwood's pawns.
If this happened we would therefore limit the main cast to Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Jaune, Nora, Ren, Qrow, Ironwood, Winter, Oscar/Ozpin and Clover.
I forgot Robin didn't I? She could have stayed an interesting side character and not been put in jail to team with Qrow.
Qrow should be competent as is, he didn't really need a buddy in not so solitary confinement.
(Plus if he did have one it could be Jacques(Don't think he would be useful but at least some development or interesing dialoguq could happen))

The reason why I personally think they made Oscar a “New Character” was because he was pre planned.
Hear me out. The creators did say originally that
    1. Volume 9 was one of the earliest volumes to be conceptualized
    2. Team JNPR wasn’t originally planned out until much later on.
Taking my two points, if Volume 9 was planned out before most other volumes, that would likely mean Salem was planned. And who is Salems main target? Ozpin.
Now I’m not saying that Oscar was directly planned but his concept may have been long before JNPR’s creation.
Maybe instead of the Jaune being Ozpin idea was shafted by Oscar, maybe Oscar was always supposed to be, but when Jaune was created they were similar.
I honestly think since Jaune was planned out later on, Oscar may have been given his role. But also upon realizing how similar they were, they took them on separate paths

Only the true king could lift it from the stone like only Oz is allowed to wield the cane since it's been his and rightfully so for millennia.
It would also work well with a holy spirit that spoke to Joan of Arc, a simple farm girl, to fight the war.
RWBY takes a lot of inspiration from historical figures and their journeys, myths, fairy tales, stories, and other urban legends. It would be cool if some of them overlapped to help with the story. 18:06 so, something I noticed some time ago was that the definition for Ozma's power according to the wiki is that he reincarnates in 'a similar soul' or something along the lines of identifying themselves, its never actually specificied he only latches to males humans. Of course, all the past lives were men, but it's techinically not against the rules they set that he could hop to a female body as long as they had a similar mindset, which gives even MORE options for the 'next Ozpin' than just the boys there.

Ren being ozpin reincarnation is an interesting idea where he is in a situation where he doesn't know what to do. Where all his life and memories will eventually go away. He may keep his calm demeanor on the outside but inside he is panicking at this idea. Nora is basically devastated with the knowledge her long time friend and sort of confusing love interest will eventuallybe gone merging into her headmaster. Jaune is basically in conflict since he blames ozpin for putting prryha in the crosshairs but is also is scared for his friend who has no way of stopping the ozpin from taking over.
It would of made ren much more interesting seeing him going through that.
It's a good excuse for him to interact more with team rwby. Lord know we need more characters interaction between them

  • @ouh.my_

    so lemme rewrite him:
His song is called „fear“ so let‘s make him a character who‘s scared of the adventure in the beginning and not just scared of being a vessel. He‘s a really bad fighter who can‘t protect himself and the others have to teach him. More than in just one stupid scene. This would give the other characters time to show what they‘ve learned, Oscar the chance to grow and overcome his fear and Odcar and the others the chance to become actual friends. Then in the Ruby and Oscar scene he describes how he was always hiding from problems and others have solved them for „the little kid“ Ruby could give him hope. Then he would also have something connecting him to Blake: Hiding from problems. They‘d have something to talk about too. Next is Yang. She was like a mother to Ruby in earlier seasons and Oscar could remind her of a younger Ruby and she wants to be a mother to him too especially because he didn‘t have a mother too (we don‘t know but i think so) His arc is to overcome his fear and face the threats, at the end of Vol 5 he proves what he has learned in the fight with Leo, but he realises he must get better because he couldn‘t handle Hazel. In Volume 8 where he faces Hazel and Salem and destroyes the whale he‘d prove that he‘s not scared anymore. There we have it.

With the death of Oz, they kind of forgot that there wasn't an established character that could lead team Ranger or help progress the main plot line to the characters eventually meeting Salem.
Qrow could have handled this easily but they made a new character for this. Then after that purpose was fulfilled they dropped him just like Maria

Jaune might've been an interesting choice I guess, and as to his "Self-insert" nature, I think that arose more from the fanfiction world since there are a lot of OP Jaune fanfics out there, though I do think there is something to Jaune being a self-insert in the later volumes, not so much the early ones.

I've been reading a lot of comments and I've noticed one very peculiar thing. A lot of people keep making mention of how Oscar is pretty much going to be overwritten by ozpin sooner or later. And I don't know if my knowledge of the show is Rusty but where do they ever basically say that is 100% going to happen? They show that this is a fear of oscar's and Qrow, while drunk and pretty much downtrodden because of what they found out, off-handedly mentions it in a bitter way. Beyond those instances I legitimately cannot remember any significant, concrete, solid proof that Oscar will be overwritten when Ozpin fully merges with him. To me it seems more like they're implying that when Ozma merges with a like-minded soul it's more like every experience that made up the previous person melds with the current person. Yes they get their memories and experiences and knowledge, along with subconscious and even instinctual muscle memory of certain things, but the personality of the current iteration is not completely overwritten. Maybe a few personality traits are carried over but the next person, in this case oscar, will still be at his core oscar. He'll have the memories of every iteration before him and access to all of his experiences, but he will still be oscar. I compare this to the Avatar from Avatar last airbender. Each iteration was technically the same person and they can over time gain memories and experiences from their previous lives but each individual Avatar was completely different. Maybe they had similar quirks and personality traits but at their core, while the same person ultimately, they are individually different people. I don't know food for thought. Like I said this is from my, admittedly rusty, knowledge of the show since I haven't gone back and watched volume four through six in a while. If they ever did outright state that Ozpin will overwrite Oscar completely in the show please tell me where they did and maybe even link me a clip so I can see it myself. But if they never did outright confirm that Oscar will be no more when Ozpin fully merges with him then a lot of people really need to cool their jets and wait until that event inevitably happens to see who is left. Ozpin, Oscar or maybe a mix of both. Considering it seems to me they might be hinting at a possible relationship between Oscar and Ruby that goes further than friendship I'm more in the category that Oscar will still be at his core himself.

I’m fairly confident that the general concept of Ozpin being either immortal or someone who reincarnates was around from the beginning of RWBY. Monty had mentioned that all the names in RWBY related to a color except for Ozpin for reasons and that the color naming came out of the Great War in Remnant if I recall.
That said I don’t think they wanted to “lose” a member of the main cast again so soon after Pyrrha so they created Oscar.

  • @notquiteallison
    @notquiteallison 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Some thoughts on his development and character:
The writers have definitely not done as well as they could. Oscar does have character, if you look at how he has changed and how these monologuing scenes from other characters have effected him. Volume 5 did do him dirty because it was mainly Oz taking over, but we see in his scene with Ruby that he is scared and never wanted to be a huntsman, but since he doesn't get to decide anymore he has to try his best. IF they take this and run with it, they could emphasize his frustration that his choices have been taken from him. His scenes with many characters include him chilling in the background but he obviously doesn't enjoy speaking up or questioning those who have more experience than him. I am deeply upset that we got no Oscar screentime in vol 6 for his development after Jaune yelled at him. Take out Jaune's conversation with his sister, and take out some of Ruby's conversation with Maria in the episode beforehand, and you have time for a solid scene. I hope now that team RWBY and Jaune are separated from Emerald, Oscar, and Renora, (and Qrow is separated too), that we see him grow into his struggles more. I hope he and the rest of them freak out as though their friends have died and Oscar looses some of his optimism, I mean Ruby was his closest friend and primary love interest, he should be hurting. Also, as far as we know, Oscar hasn't lost people before. This should be huge for him, and I hope they deliver. Some things about Oscar: He is optimistic, strategic, anxious, but also brave, persuasive, and he hasn't even figured himself out yet, most 15 year old's don't quite know who they are. Also, he is trusting.

Honestly, I love the ideas of Jaune, Qrow, or Torchwick being the next Ozpin.
Jaune because it would truly fit his Joan of Arc inspiration with hearing Oz in his head and gaining his abilities to help protect his friends better, to ensure none of them die like Pyrrha did, from him not being strong enough to be trusted to fight alongside her in his mind.
That she rather fight alone and die trying to save him from the fate she chose herself, than risk dragging him with her into a fight she wasn’t sure she could win.
Only to find out, Ozpin’s knowledge, advice in his head, and abilities all come at a terrible price. And there is nothing he or Ozpin can do about it, it’s going to happen just as it had with all of his precious hosts.
To become part of the Ozma collective.
Qrow would be more mentally ready to do what he must, but it would make him feel sorrowful knowing he would cease to exist as himself, never to enjoy Ruby’s bright optimistic and innocent world view and her adoration of him, never again to enjoy his mischievous trouble making headstrong niece that Yang has become, and despite how they protest this from happening and want to save him… Qrow knows there is nothing he can say to assure them.
Putting them at severe odds with Ozpin for putting their Uncle Qrow into this position, as well as even Raven hating his guts.
Bad enough Summer died in his war, but he is taking her brother too? Wearing HIS face, using HIS voice to speak to her? I don’t care how bad off they are, they seemed to have some level of care for each other and I know Raven would be furious about this happening to Qrow.
God only knows how Taiyang would take it. Let alone Winter and Ironwood as while not close to Qrow did have respect for him as a huntsman and a fellow comrade against Salem.
Roman Torchwick, would be interesting to see and now I NEED to see how the Criminal Mastermind and thief of Vale changes his way to trying to saving the world because Ozpin is in the pilot seat.
How would Neo take this? Would she join Salem in some vain attempt at getting back her Torchwick who was basically her world? Or would she protect Ozpin because he still has what little by little is remaining of her dear friend/father figure/potential love interest?/boss? It leaves a lot up in the air and it’s clear these two are close in ways only Roman and Neo truly understood.
I do love JPDE’s style of explaining their bond in Neo’s route though, I highly recommend checking it out to anyone reading this! There are TH-cam videos for JPDE in all sorts of routes, including Neo.
Before anyone bitches, Yang is bi sexual because in Volume one she was not only checking out guts at Beacon’s “huge slumber party”, but clearly finding them sexually attractive.
Lesbians DON’T find men sexually attractive, they’re attracted to women.
Blake is Bi too, she dated Adam, could have been with Sun as Monty was clearly going for in the first three volumes, but was pushed to Yang because of Roosterteeth after Monty died because they’re partners and partners need to get together for most cases. Heck, when Sun and Blake was about to head their separate ways, it was clear Blake didn’t want Sun to go. She had some feelings for him and felt they was saying goodbye.
More like Roosterteeth was purposefully trying to sink their ship to give Yang a better chance, but she was right in a sense. Another idea of Monty’s changed by those jerks…
Just look at Ren and Nora or Jaune and Pyrrha if you don’t believe me. They even tried pushing Weiss with Ruby for this! Despite the fact Weiss never blushes when Ruby holds her close, complements her, or gets jealous from guts like Jaune or Oscar getting close to Ruby at all.
Weiss treats her like a friend and her leader, her partner in a PROFESSIONAL sense! But nope, the LGBTQIA just LOVE to keep insisting they are together. Penny has better odds than Weiss for crying out loud!
So basically, Blake is Bi, she has shown an interest in guys. She even blushed because of Sun in volume three when calling him a dork as he was celebrating his victory over team NDGO when Yang teased her about him. Yet, she also shows interest in women too, her time with Illia is proof enough and of course the elephant in the room, YANG.
    So yes, Blake is Bi.
Next is Weiss, she is at least straight as she shown romantic interest in Neptune as he flirted with her, wanted to go to the dance with him, and even got jealous as he flirted with the ladies of Team NDGO.
But for the sake of argument yo her liking ladies, which she shows little evidence of, she is protective of Ruby and cares for her feelings and well being.
A friend does that, but I know how they hard core press ships like this, so I am trying to give them the slight benefit on this.
End result? Weiss is Straight with a possibility of being Bi Sexual. Yang is definitely Bi Sexual, and Blake is Bi Sexual.
Because Lesbians DON’T, I repeat, DO NOT, find men sexually attractive or want to pursue romantic interests in them!
Blame Monty if you must, but deal with it.
As for Ruby, she really shows little romantic desires for anyone yet, acting more like a Shonen Hero from a manga in the sense she is fighting for her friends and what she believes is right. Much like Izuku from My Hero Academia, but blushes a lot less and doesn’t stutter from being too close to someone from the opposite sex. And NO she hasn’t stuttered from being held in Weiss’s arms yet.
So don’t try that bullshit. I paid attention.
JPDE is more than just a self insert, it’s a great story with different direction in how the events of Beacon arc can play out with new characters that encourages the possibility of Polyamory relationships and even gay relationships depending on if you go the Nora and Ren route or Coco and Velvet route.
Each has their own unique a endings being created that is honestly a treat to watch and I feel if you approach it with an open mind, a lot of people can love this!
But I can’t make any of you do anything, these are my thoughts and feelings on this. So give it a try, if you wish, and decide for yourselves.

Honestly, Oscar just seems to highlight a more endemic problem about the cast overall on the protagonist side. The majority don't feel like actual characters just really barebones archetypes.
Even the relationships between characters aren't really explored to really care about them. Again with a few exceptions.
The exceptions being Jaune, Weiss, BY, RW, and JNR.
Jaune gets the good meaty stuff that actually attaches audiences to a character and develops him. It's basic stuff, and for those familiar with anime you can follow the beats. It's not high grade refined stuff like Deku or Tanjiro but the basic recipe is there.
Weiss was similar to that, the jerk that learns to be a person. Again, standard stuff. The problem is they clearly don't know how to develop her beyond that phase so now she's gone flat like the others.
Everyone else might as well be cardboard.
For being the titular team name I don't feel RWBY was some sort of tight group that was tragicly torn apart by "fate". It feels like it was just there to justify the title. The audience only felt two relationships from the resulting group of four.
The more organic feeling one was JNR with more content to actually show that, yes, it's a tight knit group.
If the original plan was to make Jaune Ozpin's new vessel not only would that have neatly tied alot of threads together, it would've been a much easier justification to explain why he got sucked into the main plot of S9. Instead now they either have to write a whole other reason why he had to be there.

    • @moistfist1054
      @moistfist1054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It probably was meant to be Jaune. It would’ve also given team RNJR a purpose instead of just killing a grim.
Not only would have fit Joan of Arc’s “voice in my head” scenario, but also the inspirational half too.
In her story Jeanne was a firm believer in god, followed her beliefs in blind faith and inspired her followers.
Ozpin was similar. Not only was he a kind man in his original life, but Professor Port at the very start said to Weiss that he believed in Ozpin’s judgment completely and he’s never steered him wrong.
Jaune was supposed to be the next inspirational figure who people can unconditionally believe in. Someone who worked his way up from nothing and the light at the end of the tunnel in a world full of creatures of darkness.

Honestly, there could have been a really interesting story with Oscar being the token good teammate on Cardin's team. Hell, you could have stuck him on Sun's team, his other two teammates besides Neptune have no personality anyway.
Introducing Oscar earlier would have given him a chance to be his own person, instead of Ozpin's sock puppet. He could have gotten likes and dislikes, he could have interacted with the team. Wouldn't it have been awesome if he formed a close friendship with, say, Jaune, and then in the aftermath of Season 3, he suddenly starts hearing this voice in his head? @@rexlumontad5644 😂😂😂that could be interesting, but would just extend the problem that no one likes Oscar they just like Oz

Nope, as far as I am aware, he hasn't discovered his Semblance yet. Because I think that green Shield he projected was just Ozpin's Magic.
Better Question: Does *Penny* have a Semblance? She has a Soul and Aura, so therefore she should have a Semblance.
But her Soul comes from her Father, so would Penny have her Dad's Semblance or would she get a completely unique Semblance because she is her own Person?

@@johannesseyfried7933 ig she would have her dad's semblance only bc she's just basically a robot fueled by his aura. Idk tho bc she qualified for madian powers which feels kinda odd. A guys aura in a hunk of metal that looks like a girl qualified. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I think one of the main reasons they made Oscar is somewhat like you said where they did a combination of both of John and Ruby in a character but I think they also did it because they didn't want to put eyes on a character we already knew or wanted to get to know because eventually their life would be taken away from them by us even if Oscar still stays himself which I think over the next few volumes will get more of Oscar and learn about him like you said we didn't learn anything about him yet but I like to point out we didn't really learn anything about Nora 12 Volume 8 where we learned her mom abandoned her and that's how she ended up in rains village we at least know that Oscar lived in a small farming village maybe with his aunt and maybe the writers at some point will add up on his story from there I think at best Oscar is one of those characters they bringing at the end of a series and they slowly build on his character and by the end you fully like him and I think one of the main reasons they haven't fully flushed him out yet is because they're afraid that if they have many episodes focused on Oscar like they did with John and volume one fans would be upset about it

Suddenly I see an amazing twist if Oscar was just gathering information. I know they can't do it but imagine if a character being bland was on purpose.
