Stoked you found a bass that works for you! I spent years cycling through several until I got my Dingwall’s. After that, I haven’t ever had an itch for anything else. Also, zero fret helps with action/nut height (easier to dial in) but mostly allows the timbre of the open note to be similar/the same as any fretted note.
That's not how the word Baritone works. A Baritone Bass would have to be higher pitched than a normal bass. Lower pitched basses could be classified as sub- or contra-basses.
True but I don’t think people know that. With the increasing popularity of baritone guitars, people might be led to believe that “baritone” means “lower”
@@PigglyWigglyDeluxe It's exactly that. Actually a regular guitar has already a baritone range on it because it sounds an octave lower than written, but we've accepted the expression over the years. I'm ok with that, but to say "Baritone bass" makes no sense at all.
Awesome bass. On my Wishlist as well. With that 37-inch you can go really low. Even down to F0 with some slightly thicker gauges than the stock strings. I got a 35-37-inch conversion neck on my BTB200 and I have taken it down to E0 with a 170 string.
One tipp, do not buy online with multiscale. I was in a shop and had my eyes on this exact bass. In the end I bought a combustion 5 from dingwall. I was just more comfortable with it, than I was with the ibanez. Don't get me wrong here. This is a fantastic bass, but the 35-37 with the btb neck and style may not work well for you, whereas the dingwall will. Or you may even set your eyes on an srms 725 or an ehb 1505ms. I had all these in hand, and also the spector. Out of all these the dingwall cb and ng fit best for me. If only I could get my hands on an esp b-1005ms....
Thank very much for this review! I’ve had my eye on this bass for over a year, but I could barely find any information/demos on it, especially in low tunings. I also appreciate you playing it in drop Ab and C, literally the two tunings I want to play in most
Multiscale is so awesome for bass and I’m glad companies like Ibanez/Spector have made them more affordable! I have a Dingwall NG3 and D ROC Hellboy bass and I will never go back lol. At least for 5 string/Heavy music. I still love classic basses for 4 string/standard tuning.
@@MikeHunt-n4uI have an Ibanez prestige rg655 and the 6 string BTB806MS bass. I think Ibanez’s bass department is way more creative and intuitive than their guitar department, but both have phenomenal quality. I’d say their bass department is better
i got my own btb805ms almost a year ago and i love mine. im 6'3 with large hands and the bass feels amazing in my hands, ive played it for fun with metal music but ive played it on a decent amount of jazz performances and i love it. its great to hear someone likes it too :) (its also the only bass that i havent wanted to mod)
note for people who may end up wanting to buy one - I'd recommend you get comfortable with a fret end file, and wiring. I bought mine used and the fret ends were sprouting way past the board so I knocked them down to level. The output jack on mine was super faulty which is apparently a pretty common issue with those locking input jacks - Just replace it with a regular jack and get a jack plate replacement. aside from that get yourself some quality strings (I'd recommend payson strings personally)
I bought the 805ms last year and I loooooooove it. The scale length is long but very manageable, the pickups and stock preamp have a nice growl to them without any post processing, and it just looks and feels great.
Thanks for the great review on this bass. I'm in the same position as you. Technically a guitarist but I also play bass on my tracks. I'm looking to get the string version of this one. Sounds great.
Excellent video. Hope this encourages more people to buy a bass and record it vs. using plug ins. Lastly. I hope this inspires more great riffs and songs and maybe even push the bass up a hair in your mixes. :)
The zero fret should give the most even tone from "open" notes to fretted notes. I have noticed on a few guitars and basses where the open notes sounded noticeably different from fretted notes. For example I've had open notes sound darker than fretted note, and I imagine that is the typical case. Of course nut material makes a big difference there though.
Sounds absolutely killer! The scale length on these is one fret longer than 34" standard, but between the little extra and the electronic, you get that modern clear sound. But anyone complaining about scale length- bah, one fret. If you don't like the ergonomics, it's likely not because of one extra fret.
I used to play in a band that did all drop C. Since the Just-a-nut in my Warwick is brass, and none of the hardware on the bass would support an F# string, I actually grabbed the thickest 6 string set I could find (rotosound) and just used the top 5 strings. Worked great.
As a default bassist - a guitarist who has always found that the band needs a bass player and that I just filled that role - it is great seeing some bass content on your channel. Bass is WAY more important than most guitarists think in order to make their guitars sound huge. It would be cool to see more bass content, specifically dialing in heavy bass tones, mixing bass and guitar, etc. Great playing and video, as always,
Usually, zero frets are used on multi scale instruments that don't have a string tree on the headstock. The individual "mono rail" bridges don't make electrical ground contact with all the strings like regular bridges do, so you have to have continuity somewhere. Dingwall basses usually have string trees that make contact with all strings. I guess you could also have a route under all the individual bridges and "daisy chain" the ground wire, but that's not a very production friendly approach. But zero frets are also nice because open strings sound the same as fretted notes, specially on super low tunings.
I tried one of these closer to when they came out. However, I got the 6 string model and after having played a Dingwall, I'd preferred the Dingwall feel more so I returned the Ibanez. Definitely a gorgeous and great sounding bass none the less.
I found my recording bass like 20 years ago and it’s been a staple of my sound since. No im not a bassist but as a guitarist I understand the bass is one of the most important aspects of my instrument in a mix. I imagine newer stuff like this bass brings features to the table that I would absolutely love but it’s okay. I’m happy with my soundgear sr500. I also have a 1973 Gibson ripper. Don’t really ever use it. But it sounds like pure thunder when it does get plugged in. One of these days I’ll pick up a new bass for a change of pace and it would probably be something very similar to this.
You just can't beat Ibanez on value. That's an incredible looking bass with high end specs! I closely considered one of these, but overall I just prefer the sound of Dingwalls so I ended up with one of those, although I wish it looked as good as that Ibanez. Great demo as usual, Jon.
When I found out about Dingwalls my mind was blown. But I just dont like the way maple necks look, and that's all they offer for their "cheap" (~$2.5k) line. Saved up, got a Spector NS Dimension 5 for a few hundred less instead, and never looked back. You can't beat that B string at 37" scale, and I found it shocking how easy it was to adapt to the fanned frets. If you're at all curious about multiscale basses I'd encourage you to find one to try. But if you're like me and love having a 5 string but hate how the B string 'feels' compared to the other 4 strings, take the leap and get one. You won't regret it.
I want that bass so bad. Much cheaper than a dingwall for the same length. If you ever get a chance to have a look at the Quake Bass as well. They have like 40" scales, Sub octave bass guitar is super cool.

Carl Thompson was one of the first people to do 36" scale basses with his own personal bass being a 4 string with a 36" scale. You start getting close to 40" and that's the scale length of an upright bass. Mike Manring's Zon Hyperbass has 41" scale.
The Hyperbass is definitely not 41”, unless Manring is 8.5’ tall. It’s got a very long fingerboard, but the scale is not any longer than a standard bass.
If it's just for recording, a standard 5 string (or a 4 string tuned BEAD) tuned up to C or down to Bflat works fine for drop C. Going any lower would FEEL incredible in a live situation but is lost on a recording (nobody is hearing anything that low except for whales).
I played a 5 string bass in a band in drop C. My low string then was a G with a 35" scale. The largest string I could get back then was a 135, and it was too floppy. I think this bass would have been perfect for the times I did go to that low G but it was just a bit weak. My bass tech always complained about that lol. I love the idea of dropping down lower than the guitars at times. Many bands have done this, and it creates a awesome widened frequency spectrum. The option is nice to have.

@SonicDriveStudio that means the frets are worn and need to be releveled.
@pjthomas3973 I guess you played it a LOT! Seems pretty fast though for stainless steel frets
@@SonicDriveStudio Yeah that's exactly what I thought but I do play It like crazy. Definitely a great bass though, and a tone MONSTER.🤙🏼
If it shot missiles, it would be a RPG rocket launcher 😂😂😂
And why no Dingwall than 10000 others?
new word - bassitone
Nope.. Spector Dimension HP.
Perfect bass for metal has existed for a long time, its called a p-bass
4,7 Kilos……is that true?
Im sorry, but Im not paying $1300 for a bass. My Harley Benton B550 will suffice
A baritone bass? But... it does not look like a Bass VI...
In a manner of speaking
Baribass
it's crooked
"Baritone Bass" is so wrong...
I wasn't expecting people to take it so literally 😅
You definitely do not need a bass with this scale length for Drop C. lmao
It's not about "needing", it's about personal preference
Using a 100 gauge for C on a regular scale is floppy. This scale fixes that pretty well
I played a 5 string bass in a band in drop C.
