Spyderco Resilience: "Big Blade for Bad Times" by Nutnfancy

Daddy likes the big blades and sometimes that's just what you'll need...even in a folder. Well check this: for around $50 you can score a large, quality-built tactical folder. You can thank Spyderco for that options. Enter the outstanding Spyderco Resilience model. It's another TNP "Hall of Famer" that gets just about all the details right: big 4.5" leaf shaped full flat ground blade, uber fast deployment (Teflon and phosphor bronze bushings, good balance), strong stop pin, tight lockup up, pillar construction, strong clip position-able to all four corners, excellent jimping, reasonable carry weight (5.2 oz), and excellent fit and finish. Yes the 8Cr13Mov blade steel ain't the best: it will rust on you if you don't take care of it (I call it semi-stainless only). But it sharpens easily and holds an adequate edge. If you want to increase cool factor and increase its rust resistance you can coat it with a high quality option (DuraCoat currently preferred for its colorations and relative durability). The medium traction/quality G10 scales are adequate but not impressive. The knife carries relatively deep in pocket and the lanyard hole (which is tubed) is larger than "baby bear" and "momma bear" in the lineup (Persistence, Resilience). In handle retention also has been improved (forgot to show that) and is no longer seems to be an issue. Value is extreme: around $50, give or take a few but I wouldn't sweat a few bucks. POUs will center mainly on emergency defensive knife or food preparation blade (yep) with some guys even pressing the Resilience into the EDC role (too big for me). Highly impressive, representing excellent value, the big Spyderco Resilience impressively rounds out the Tenacious family. This big blade might be just the thing to have for bad times. //////////////// Nutnfancy Likability Scale (price considered): 10 out of 10

Just a note, I have a Tenacious which is rarely off my person and I live in an area with very heavily salt laden air, it's all but an island. Most of my wooded haunts are close to the sea. The steel on my knife has no signs of any corrosion after 3 years use. Amazing what a little cleaning and a smear of wd40 can do. And yes, I use 1095 carbon knives too, the same care package works for then too.

Got a Resiliense because of this positive review. Great knife! Nice blade, easy to sharpen, and easy to open and close. I've got a lot of knives but this one is my new favorite!

I am now the proud owner of a Resilience, after losing my Tenacious. I met a fellow TNP'r at work, turns out chatting with customers pays off. We got to talking about knives when I noticed his Benchmade Barrage, I showed him my EDC pick of the day (Kershaw Skyline) and mentioned I just lost my Tenacious. He came back the next day and gave me my new Resilience. Awesome dude, made my week!

@deadcoww Thanks for the thoughtful response. And yes, I try to represent what I feel are interesting and valid viewpoints on the gear even when they differ from my own. I learn a lot from the comments of guys like you under the vids. I remained amazed at the quality of experience and logic of TNPrs. Sometimes I feel like that bumper sticker, "Which way did they go, how many were there, how fast were they going...I must find for I am their leader."

The Resilience is really an awesome knife...for the size of the blade which you get it really doesn't feel like a big knife when it's in your pocket. Ever since I picked it up I can't seem to leave home without it. Thanks for all the great video.

I don't live in the woods. My main blade purpose is mostly personal admiration and fondling, mail opening, package opening, and that self defense (firearm backup) that I hope (99% sure) will never happen. This Resilience knife opens and closes with less effort than any other knife I own, for real!, (including my $200 Spydercos, Benchmades, my beloved $500 Sebenza 25 Carbon Fiber grail level knife, etc.). I pulled Resil out and played with it watching this vid, (don't try to tell me you don't pull yours out and play with it during knife reviews.) Oh, Oh, Oh... Yeah Baby !Resilience opens and closes with no effort, is light, sharp, locks confidently, rock solid when open, melds like concrete with the hand, and is looong in bite. I LOVE this blade, TOP of the pile, and my typical knife collection purchase is $130 - $500. Frickin great buy for my young friends with limited funds.. I am an old dude, with a young mind you can trust.

Thanks for the review. I have been looking for a larger folder to have a secondary EDC knife. Oddly enough in California there are no blade length restrictions on folders. So I can legally carry a resilience here. One of the tasks I had in mind was food prep. I have a delica which I LOVE. I was looking at the endura as an option. The only real advantage I can see to the endura over the resilience is that I can get the endura in purple. But I should be focusing on first kind of cool and value. Yes it would be pretty cool to have a purple endura to match up with my purple delica and purple leatherman juice XE6. But the resilience would probably be a better value. It has a longer blade than the endura which would probably make it more useful for food prep.
Thanks again for turning me on to this knife NUTN.

As you always say, have layers. For me this blade is awesome as a third blade, i.e. edc, defensive/tactical blade, and a small backup knife. I believe the Resilience serves the defensive/tactical role perfectly. When bad times come up, I would always go for a knife of this size. As always great video.

My biggest folder has arrived. This thing is a monster, but not too heavy given the size. Nutn you are right about it for food prep, this thing is better than any kitchen knife we have! Out of the box it was extremely sharp and the pivot just needed a slight adjustment as it was a little tight. Deployment is now very fast, I think the big blade helps with this as it carries some momentum once it gets going. I painted the clip black, as I don't like shiny clips. Thanks for the review.

hi ya, this knife is on the backburner at the moment, use a tenacious with half serration to clear the grain from my spring feeders on our shooting estate,I keep on telling the boss to buy finer grain but his pocket dont listen. I have been using tenacious Hard for two years now and sharpened it the other day to shaving. Must get the resilience sometime, but the only thing it would be used for is butchering, and there are good hunting knives for that. Maybe I will just get it because its such a good knife for the money.I use an old K Bar a lot still, it must be 30yrs old, its amazing what duck tape can do, if youve been in the forces you will know what I mean, we used to say that HM Forces was held together with the stuff.L.O.L.

@drumrrr83 And the funny thing is these are the very same guys that will ask to use your blades when the need arises. I have that happen many times in my military job and I always using it as a teaching moment for the unprepared, effeminate individual that fails to have at least one blade in his possession. Lots of fun to be had there. Today my loadout was as follows: Benchmade 710 (tactical blade), Delica FFG (utility), Victorinox Cadet (utility) and of course a beloved Leatherman Juice S2.

I really really like Spyderco knifes mostly for their design.
I kinda ignored the Tenacious for a long time because it looked so bulky and because of the "bad" experiences I made with Spyderco. But I finally bought one a few months ago and have to say: Great knife! Build like a tank and it never let me down.
As soon as I saw the Persistance and the Resilience I was sure, I have to get my hands on those two. So thank You for the excellent review on these beauties.

Also, currently EDCing the CRKT M16-SFG (tanto). Back pocket carry has the flippers chewing up my jeans.
a little modification that I do to all of my G-10 knives is to take off the pocket clip, and sand with moderately high grit sand paper (350-500) and smooth out just underneath where the clip is. Not too much, in order to keep pocket retention, but just enough so that it doesn't rip holes in your pants.

Been watching most of your reviews on different knives and love them all. Problem is here in Australia, knives are ridiculously expensive due to taxation and laws... this bad boy here may cost only $40 in the US, but here it costs over $200AUD... I have this blade for a week now and its easy to carry, blade sharpness is outstanding. 2 things i don't like about the blade. 1) the liner lock needs to be recessed down like the skyline. to easy to bush the liner lock off the blade. 2) mine has blade slop. tried to tighten it up, but the screw wont go any farther .

@shingouki666 You are wise and that's a great system you're rocking there. I think the SOG Flash II as a tactical blade is usually very overlooked. I carry it often too.

    Godspeed to you Nutman....
I love the whip sound effects! I love my Persistence, scratched it up, learned how to sharpen with it.... yep it looks a little jacked up now but I don't care.... under $30 some dollars delivered !
Made overseas? .... get over it people, the designers and CAD engineers and the Company are American!
    Great review.
And oh yeah I'm speculating that wearing gloves keeps you from exploring your nasal cavities :)

I already have a tenacious and was amazed at the quality for the price. I might be adding the resilience as well !!!

@nutnfancy Thanks dude! I actually started thinking more about what and how I carry thanks to the TNP. Your reviews help alot, it ain't gospel just a friendly opinion. It helps.

God bless you Nutnfancy. People always look at me weird when I carry more than one knife.
