I have watched your videos for years. I just now am making my first comment to you. Good review of this knife. Honest and true. Good job. Always a good job. Thanks. I have the micro and was so impressed with it that I want the whole Recon 1 set. My first comment to you.
I own 9 cold steel knives and machetes and they are all excellent blades. I carry a Recon 1 for EDC and cannot complain about anything. Very good edged weapons and I would recomend them to anyone.
Nutn, great to see a new blade review, awesome talking points as always. You have this knack for getting me excited about blades I normally wouldn't. Which by the way is bad for the monthly budget. You Rock brother!!
This is the first Nutnfancy review I watched while actually possessing the item being reviewed. Just got my Recon 1 tanto the other day from Midway USA. Bought it on clearance, got one of the last few they had at that price. Saved nearly $12. Very happy. Haven't stopped cutting empty bottles, cans, shoe boxes and magazines since I got it. :D Do need to smooth out the handle under the pocket clip thought. That thing is gonna tear up every pair of shorts I own before the summer is up. lol.
NUTN!! My SOG Flash II was STOLEN by TSA from my CHECKED BAG on a recent flight out of BWI. I'm thinking about trying out this CS-Recon 1 for my daily blade, and I knew I would find a Nutnfancy vid on it. I really appreciate the time you put into this stuff. Thanks for the vid. Watched your recent post... hope the channel stays awesome as ever. Keep on keepin' on and do what YOU wanna do, bro!
Just got this, it's awesome! A lot lighter than I thought. This definitely fills the requirements for a heavy-duty large folder with a extremely strong lock and lightweight! Nutn was right on the mark with his review!
Hey man this blade is awesome. I've had mine for about a year now and it's been my edc since I got it. Today this knife prooved itself to me yet againg, I was actually able to process some fire wood with it. Nothing too big just about a 2" wide branch. No lock up failures and it's still nice and sharp. Great blade man.
We are living in the "GOLDEN AGE OF BLADES" and it's great to be able to buy all the knives you can find and still not scratch the surface of what's out there. I have so many knives I'm out of room, yet there's still so many out there that I want!
i recently bought a cold steel recon 1 plain edge clip point and it's AWESOME!!! out of all the knives in the market, spyderco, benchmade, gerber, SAK, i believe that cold steel has a superior knife in the recon 1. sure it may be a litle on the bigger side for some people but it is stronger than anyother folding knife i've seen to date including the $200 ones that some manufactures make. it's reliable, durable and all around a great knife! Thank you Nutnfancy for reviewing this knife!
@Melthornal I think that's an absolutely fair comment and welcome it. What you're talking about is 2nd kind of cool and just the how the aesthetics attract or repel you. Totally understandable and there's lots of different tastes.
I have had my Recon 1 (Tanto point, inner serrated) for 11 months now, with HEAVY usage... the lock has no play and the serration has kept its bite. Actually its probably the best portion of my knife now, and i use it every day. Completely love this blade, and I've used it for everything from trail blazing to cooking. its absolutely great
nutnfancy i did not like youre reviews and your run and gun videos at first but as i got more into the stuff i became very fond of your videos and i have to say they are the best for information i out of every video i watch about tactical gear. i always looks for a nutnfancy review on an item before i buy something now haha
I was never a big fan of Cold Steel, but this knife along with the roach belly and the spike series completely changed my perception of the company. I really love my recon 1 tanto plain edge. This vid is spot on, and I want to say thanks to nutnfancy for the review.
Another great review....I bought a SOG Aegis Mini after listening to a NF table top. Now this one too.... Amazing resource for those who like to make informed purchases. Thanks
@DaylightTelevision advantage of the tanto is more strenght, but the blade gets quickly dull at its belly. when on the clip blade has a much larger belly so you have more work space with your blade. the belly is usually the most used part of the knife.
@mrmilleniumproof I agree. There are some CS blades I do not care for but that can be said for EVERY manufacturer and most of that boils down to tasted. However that have many knives like this xlnt Recon 1 at an affordable price that get it right.
Just picked up a recon 1 large size at a gun and knife show in michigan for 40 bucks. Love this knife. Super light and great grip. So happy. Cant stop deploying it for some reason
The AK47 was my first brand-name knife and I love it. Hard aluminum pommel. Using the pocket-draw thumb plate is addicting. Ambidextrous thumb plate is a plus. Unfortunately mine came with an edge more akin to that of a chisel grind, and correcting it took a bit of trouble. But it sharpens up easily.Kept a decent edge after I used it to hack apart a 2x4. I don't have a Recon 1, but looking at the specs, I think the AK47 is like a more "tactical" version of the Recon 1.
I haven't read through all the comments, but personally I think the reason they didn't smooth out the portion of the handle under the clip is that they can't decide which side to smooth out. just a guess. bought a tanto plain edge, still waiting for it, awesome review, keep up man!
bought the clip point new recon 1 and got it later that day on standard shipping, i can only speak for CS UK but i must say that the customer service is second to none if you buy direct, shaving sharp out of the box it's just a shame that i cant EDC it, unless i want to do 5yrs inside. but anyone looking to purchase this blade all i would say is that you won't regret it, im a game keeper and i have thrashed this knife for about week now and it hasn't budged. awesome blade.
I have at least 25 different Cold Steel blades. Extremely well made. I personaly like their ads. They show the knife in action and you can see what the blade can tolerate.
I know I said it before in your AK-47 vid but that new Recon 1 is SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK with that wear on it. I have the old model and love it. It has been beat on and used as a pry tool many times without so much as 1 problem. I am some how trying to convince myself that I dont need a new one but at $54... Great review dude, I'm gonna keep dreaming of a recon 1 engraved by nutnfancy.
absolutely impressed with cold steel. ive had my recon 1 tanto variety (newer version) for about a year now and i have taken it on many camping trips and edc it now and then as a tactical blade. i have had no issues with the lock up until recently. i figured i would take it completely apart and just clean it a little with some canned air. when i put the pivot screw back on i figured i would put a little lock tight on it. when i put the screw back in, the lock up hasnt been the same. could be me.
Great info nutn, you're a dedication machine! Keep em coming, I like the layers of weapons comment. Nice, but cant help but think of Neo in the Matrix going through the metal detectors scene.lol
i got the tanto a few monthes ago. i was trying to wait for your review before i got it but i couldnt wait lol. once i got it the pocket clip with the G10 was to dang rough so i did the JB weld mod, and its perfect now! Awesome knife! AWESOME REVIEW! keep it up bro!
Great knife! My edc for almost a year now and I love it. No its not my only knife, I own spydercos, kabars and others of the like, but the recon 1 tanto is my favorite. Stays sharp, stays tight! Super grippy and no my pockets haven't turned to dust. The Teflon does scratch and is lost easily. After a day or two you wont notice any weight or bulge. I have to say I agree with everything said in the video.
for camping I'd go with the lawman every time, as both the large & the mini have the choke up finger loop so makes it good for wood whittling and the like.
Im glad to see you marked up the score from a 7.5 to an 8 (wish it was at least a 8.5 though). The old model recon 1 got a 7.5 score so it seems only logical that this knife, with all the improvements you mentioned, should get an improved score. Thanks for the review!
@WillfullyVague It's true the 8Cr13Mov steel does have rusting issues; we saw it up on Glacier Call with Cr0cket20's blade. Good blade for price point put it is proving to be not so stainless. Also we are seeing in jungle environments the Kershaw Sandvik 13C26 rusting readily as well. This is direct from a TNPr down in the jungle. VG10 is still my fav high value steel but it may cost more.
@duragezic Roger that and thank you. I think the Endura FFG is a must have myself. So flat, light, great steel...love it. This Recon 1 is also excellent but is much thicker and still heavier than the FFG.
Just got my Recon 1 spear point and man am I impressed. Lock up is absolutely rock solid and the blade came hair popping sharp. It's a little bigger than I expected which is a good thing because I wasn't planning on EDCing it anyway. This will be my camping folder back up to my fixed blade. Very cool knife though.
Great review! It's good to see a table top review after a while. Don't get me wrong, nutn', I love all the field vids ( summer actual is cool series) but it's always cool to see the type of knife review that got me interested in tnp in the first place! Either way, keep up the good work!
indeed. batoning w/ a folder would be a nerve racking proposition, but based on Nutn's testing and other research I've done, the only folders I'd dare attempt it with would be one of the Tri-Ad blades. I haven't yet heard of another lock that's stronger than that one and Nutn's demonstrated with several of 'em that they can handle batoning if needed.
recieved my CS R1 yesterday, here are my data from out of the box - blade razor sharp, 0 movement on deployed blade, no problems with the locking spring. The sucker allready cut my finger. Very happy with it.
Im glad you review cold steel because a lot of knife magazines dont. Ive like cold steel all the way back to the defender line of push daggers. Woops gave my age away a bit there.
Thanks so much for this update. I just ordered a Recon I because now I can see that they fixed the issues that kept me from buying one awhile back. I also note the major difference in buying something made for a USA company contracting to a manufacturer in Taiwan (Formosa) and using Japanese steel for the blades... as opposed to some piece of junk made in communist China.
What's up! I recently lost my duty knife (Boker AK-74 auto tanto), and I was pissed. I was in the market for another auto knife but decent ones are SO expensive. This video made me purchase a new Recon 1 just now, you can't beat the price vs. quality!
I know Len Thompson's brother and I've seen Thompson at his favorite shooting range with his .357 magnum a few times. In my opinion, Thompson and his Cold Steel Company are the real deal. He's serious about his business and his own training and proficiency with weapons.
@Paradiddle93 Totally fair comment and good observations. You did a good job of separating it from the knives. I understand the sentiment of getting no credit for stuff, trust me.
@docwondernuts Thanks for the support in that observation. Yep, those are some of the most delicate serrations out there and not recommended by me. Also impossible to sharpen. And you're right, you totally should have been able to cut the zip ties with them.
I have a rajah III that I use for my EDC. I beat up on it a lot and it serves me well. The recurve is hard sharpen on the Sharpmaker but it gets sharp "enough" Triad lock is outstanding. My biggest complaint with Cold Steel knives are that the folders only get a 1 year warranty. From an industry perspective that is sub-par compared to the competition.
Picked up the new model Cold Steel Recon 1 tanto after seeing your video; definitely different from my Flash I but I'm diggin it. Keep this shit up man. I'd be pissed the day there's no more nutn videos. I'm already pissed about wranglerbarn leaving.
I just decided I need a knew field knife. Besides my couple N'Fancy approved EDC's like the Skyline, Delica 4 & the awesome Tenacious, I need an active duty replacement for my Ka-Bar I got on my first day out of boot camp in 1995. I don't know what I would do if something were to happen to my Ka-Bar. I'm going to be scouring the Fancy reviews for my next long term fixed blade. Thanks Nutn for all the video help I know you'll be to me in the next few days. :0) TNP Rocks
I can attest to the sharpness of this knife. I have the Recon 1 XL version in AUS8 and it is sharp enough to shave hairs off your arm out of the box. It also feels very light in hand despite the 5.5" blade.
I have the older version Recon1 with the tanto point and I love it. Good strong knife that has seen some work and comes back for more. I don't care for the serrations, but I got a deal on it so I can't complain. The weight doesn't bother me if I'm needing a strong carry knife. I have a hard time choosing between this and the AK-47. Love them both and carry them both. Strong lock up, strong blade, SHARP. Haven't found too much these guys won't cut, including (ahem) a thumb that hits the blade.
Great review, I love this knife! Don´t know of any better for the price. Nutnfancy, could you review the Cold Steel Recon Tanto, or explain why you haven´t?
it is really cool how it looks the one with the tanto tip, also it may be a good model for someone who works wood because you get something similar to a chisel, lol it looks great as it is, maybe just a mirror polish and It will be freaking awesome!!!
Just got this in the tanto blade. Excellent knife, one of cold steel's best folders. Better than the Ak47 (IMO) and I have yet to order myself the American Lawman. It's the best traction I've ever felt bar none, folder or fixed. It's like sandpaper (but it's also surprisingly comfortable!). Anyway, thanks for the excellent review nutn, as always (watching it again now with the knife in my hand)
Cold Steel stuff is good, and very well made. I purchased a Cold Steel Recon Scout on Nutn's recommendation and was very pleased with the build quality. That blade takes are real beating... Good stuff. Yes, they need to hire a real marketing firm!!! Those DVDs are a little embarrassing.
@AirForceAce3571 It was a BIG help. Thanks! I bought the clip blade recon 1. These knives are damn sharp and you need to be careful your fingers are not in the way when folding down the blade because the spring will make it close fast on your fingers. Cut myself twice this way, but I learned my lesson.
Thanks for the advice man. I'll go for it and prob pick up the Code 4 next week. From most of the reviews I've seen, it seems like a pretty good deal. Thanks again.
@Sharingan221 Man I love it when I get lucky! I heard from many good TNPrs after the AK-47 review that they wanted this soon. Soon I moved it to the top of the list. Thanks for taking the time to comment dude.
I just got the Recon-1. For $69.60 this is a great knife! I have expensive edc's, but this is a really nice knife. Razor sharp, great grip & fantastic lock up this is worth the cash.
yea I'm super excited for the Mini Recon 1. should be a great EDC choice; more compact than the 4" version but just as strong since it will have the same lock. the mini is on my knife wish list, just waiting for CS to release it...
@House6409 Tantos are less prone to tip breakage in a stabbing or thrusting motion than a lot of clip blades, but clip blades have at advantage in a slashing/slicing motion due to the sweep or "belly" toward the tip. hope that helps!
@IVSpod I really wanted to shave this one to a 10 minute review but there's some history involved and I think most fans find it interesting (chk these comments). I would had to ignore the previous version of the CS Recon 1, skim over the testing phase, and blow off the intro. Actually I, as a knife enthusiast myself, love the way this review turned out and I enjoyed watching. That's a good yardstick I use in order to go live. Informationally tight but entertaining is a tough standard.
@ILRRLM Sorry but that one is not on the list at this time. I still have issues with SureFire pricing as well: just too high and they've hosed the tactical market for years in this. $500 for a weapon light? Unbelievable. I do not wish to promote at this time.
I don't have ego issues, all I was trying to say was that if you don't like a heavy knife, that's fine, that's your opinion. A knife weighing more than you prefer is nothing you should condemn the knife for, or the company. I myself, and many other prefer a heavy knife, that's our opinion also, it has nothing to do with the quality of the knife though. I shouldn't have mad that comment, I should have kept my thoughts to myself, I know I was in the wrong.
Earlier I questioned the discrepancy between Nutn's claim that the original Recon 1 weighed 6.6 oz when the company claimed 5.6 oz. I now understand that he doesn't necessarily believe everything that he reads... he ACTUALLY weighs the knife. Good job keeping it real Nutn.
Another fantastic review by one of the best. Thank you.
Great video Nutnfancy, you always remind me why I'm subscribed to you. I was on the fence about what knife I wanted to get but I know now! Thanks man.
I love the rugged look of the beat up tanto blade it just ads character to the knife.
Do need to smooth out the handle under the pocket clip thought. That thing is gonna tear up every pair of shorts I own before the summer is up. lol.
Thanks my friend, you are correct. Can't do it without you guys.
Thanks to your reviews i have now become a fan of cold steel and now have 1 of their knives on order.
First knife review in a long time! Welcome back Nutnfancy!
Just got this, it's awesome! A lot lighter than I thought. This definitely fills the requirements for a heavy-duty large folder with a extremely strong lock and lightweight! Nutn was right on the mark with his review!
I've noticed he likes using the whiplash sound effect.
I feel embarrassed I didn't know you made an updated video haha!!! I bought this knife yesterday
Great vid, Nutn. I saw this video back when you uploaded it, but I just bought a Recon 1 with this vid in mind. Thanks for all you do.
We are living in the "GOLDEN AGE OF BLADES" and it's great to be able to buy all the knives you can find and still not scratch the surface of what's out there.

Thank you Nutnfancy for reviewing this knife!
Just got this knife in the mail last week. Now I'm watching nutnfancy reruns.
a 28 minute knife review... Because of this you are my favourite youtuber
@Melthornal I think that's an absolutely fair comment and welcome it. What you're talking about is 2nd kind of cool and just the how the aesthetics attract or repel you. Totally understandable and there's lots of different tastes.
Checkin' out some of my old favs, Nutn. We love ya man.
I just got one today, it is so awesome, thanks for reaffirming what I had already picked out as a great knife!
I have had my Recon 1 (Tanto point, inner serrated) for 11 months now, with HEAVY usage... the lock has no play and the serration has kept its bite. Actually its probably the best portion of my knife now, and i use it every day. Completely love this blade, and I've used it for everything from trail blazing to cooking. its absolutely great
Great review. Haven't yet got a Cold Steel but am thinking about it after this. Amazing how that folder held up to batoning.
Man I love the little "Witcha!" sound you use, great professional review as always but you don't take yourself too seriously :)
I am getting one of these for Christmas, I am totally stoked, it will be my EDC blade. Anyway, awesome review, I can't wait until I get mine!
nutnfancy i did not like youre reviews and your run and gun videos at first but as i got more into the stuff i became very fond of your videos and i have to say they are the best for information i out of every video i watch about tactical gear.

Excellent review. I been interested in getting myself a new folder. I loved the review so i purchased one tonight. Keep up the good work.

@zamriash I don't disable any commenting features and seriously am not sure what that is. I will check into it. I do like the idea of that feature.

bought a tanto plain edge, still waiting for it, awesome review, keep up man!
@jeepnicc It does wear off quickly under hard use. Thanks.
Long video, but its great! I really appreciate you taking your time going over all details and such.
thanks!
bought the clip point new recon 1 and got it later that day on standard shipping, i can only speak for CS UK but i must say that the customer service is second to none if you buy direct, shaving sharp out of the box it's just a shame that i cant EDC it, unless i want to do 5yrs inside. but anyone looking to purchase this blade all i would say is that you won't regret it, im a game keeper and i have thrashed this knife for about week now and it hasn't budged. awesome blade.

AWESOME REVIEW!
keep it up bro!

Always loved the knife didn't pull the trigger because of the wait but I see one in my future now
Yes! Old school nutnfancy knife review. Love em! That's a wicked blade, I'm sold
heard the classic Nutnfancy "watish!" about 20 times in this video. I think I need a text message ringtone with that
As usual, a super vid from nutnfancy. Thanks!
Im glad you review cold steel because a lot of knife magazines dont. Ive like cold steel all the way back to the defender line of push daggers. Woops gave my age away a bit there.
I took the knife apart and tweeked the spring with plyers so it lightened up the spring strength and its a lot smoother and locks up fine.
Thanks so much for this update. I just ordered a Recon I because now I can see that they fixed the issues that kept me from buying one awhile back. wow i was hooked into this video, awsome and thorough review! its great to see someone put a product through similer test as advertized.
You can remove the thumb stud on the new recon and run a small zip tie through the hole and now it's waved.
theres also a stop bar on the inside that keeps the blade from striking inside of the handle .
"uh oh, another great knife review" - thought of ever guy on a budget =D What a cool looking knife with great value. Thanks so much for posting!
i honestly love the way cold steel advertises.
i've carried my old recon 1 almost every day...all day for about 4 years now. Did not notice the weight untill i got the new one...wow what a diff.
I know Len Thompson's brother and I've seen Thompson at his favorite shooting range with his .357 magnum a few times. In my opinion, Thompson and his Cold Steel Company are the real deal. He's serious about his business and his own training and proficiency with weapons.

TNP Rocks
A Cold Steel knife is my next choice next payday. Got myself a United Cutlery Bowie a few weeks ago, now I'm looking at Cold Steel knives right now.
Great review, I love this knife! Don´t know of any better for the price. Nutnfancy, could you review the Cold Steel Recon Tanto, or explain why you haven´t?
Been waiting for this!! Another awesome review and awesome knife! BTW my fioncee is obsessed with Ali the Mountain Dog, she loves her
it is really cool how it looks the one with the tanto tip, also it may be a good model for someone who works wood because you get something similar to a chisel, lol it looks great as it is, maybe just a mirror polish and It will be freaking awesome!!!
Anyway, thanks for the excellent review nutn, as always (watching it again now with the knife in my hand)
recon 1 is part of my EDC and probably my fav part of it
Cold Steel stuff is good, and very well made.
Knifeknifeknife video yey! Need......more.............knives! Top quality video as always sir
@shanehey No problem dude, totally understandable and it happens.
I just got the Recon-1. For $69.60 this is a great knife! I have expensive edc's, but this is a really nice knife. Razor sharp, great grip & fantastic lock up this is worth the cash.
yea I'm super excited for the Mini Recon 1. should be a great EDC choice; more compact than the 4" version but just as strong since it will have the same lock. the mini is on my knife wish list, just waiting for CS to release it...
like the handle second generation no matter how you grab it you still got a good grip on it
i m addicted on two things - black coated blades and NUtn's whip sounds! :PPPPPP
