I have to admit that the CJ4 is a favorite for casual IFR flying. I highly recommend that General Aviation Simmers that are looking to transition to the airliners start with this jet. The lack of the auto throttle, APU, and complicated overhead panel let students focus more on learning the FMC and getting used to the non-garmin interfaces that they'll commonly find on Boeing and Airbus.. In fact it's very similar to the avionics that are found on the CRJ series of airliners.
This is the BEST introduction to the CJ4 flight plan and autopilot that I've found so far. It has really improved my piloting of this aircraft. Thanks!
Just watched the video. For future flights, the pitot heat can come on when cleared for takeoff when crossing the hold short line (2 min limitation on the ground), do not start both engines at once, and the flight director should NOT be in VS for takeoff, instead, try PITCH mode by pressing VS until PITCH is displayed.
Thanks as always for your tutorials Jonathan. Best "non-pilot" pilot on TH-cam! I just deleted about a dozen Working Title tuts from over the past 2 years, many which were yours. Cheers!
Fantastic video, thank you! Having recently got back into Simming, I chose the CJ4 as my chosen aircraft without knowing it had been updated. Refreshing my brain and learning with YT vids. Yours has been by far the best!
Couple operational notes, if you care for realism. You wouldn't turn the pitot heat on until shortly before takeoff. Also, avionics don't typically get turned on until after engine start (concerns about voltage spikes). Engine starts would always be one at a time. Lastly, the "terrain" mode is showing terrain relative to your current altitude, not so much a depiction of the terrain as a relief map would. That's why, when you're on the ground, it's showing as all red..... It's all a "threat" currently. Of course, being a sim all of these things were just fine but, you seem like someone who enjoys/appreciates the realism of MSFS, so thought I'd give some tips. :) Great video though! Walked everyone through the new options on the Proline very well.
I'll do a more correct video at some point - quite often I go "off the checklist" to show functional bits and pieces. Like you say though - there is always going go be an audience for doing things by the book :)
I saw somewhere else you press the engine start button, wait to 20% N2, then run. Then do the other engine. Didn't even know you could press run first then the start button..
@@oldRighty1 I'm not sure exactly the specific N2 for that engine. For the Hawker I fly, it's minimum 12% before introducing fuel. But yes, there's a minimum to make sure you have enough airflow through the engine, before introducing fuel.
Thanks Jonathan. This got me going in the CJ4 (after mainly using the Longditude). Found its a good half way house into the FMC and was easier to setup than the bigger airliners. I only needed to get the flight plan in and that was enough to get me in the air. Once you understand the throttle/climb rate thing (much like the TBM930) its very straight forward. Even the VNAV worked well and displays the time to TOD.
Just a head's up that, at least on the real craft, you don't wanna turn on the pitot tubes until takeoff minus ~~5~~ 2 minutes, or else the things will literally burn themselves up.
Did that change? The CJ4 Revision 5 checklist says 2 minutes. Every Citation I've flown in real life had a 2 minute limitation on pitot heat use on the ground.
@@thecorporatepilotdad no, I'm sure that was my fault for the inaccuracy - thanks for clearing it up! Either the person I heard it from (the Working Title folks) got it wrong, or I simply misremembered.
@@jonbeckett FLC should not be used on takeoff. FLC is nothing more than speed hold via the command bars controlling pitch. If the airplane is flying at 100 knots but FLC is set to 240, the FD will have the airplane fly level until 200 knots is reached. Pitch or TO for takeoff is the more correct way to do it. Adjust power to prevent an overspeed while still maintaining a sufficient rate of climb regardless of doing a SID or not.
I've been playing around with the CJ4 a bit and loved your video. Thank you for making it and giving such a clear and concise guide to using the autopilot!
Just messed around with the cj4 last night…I didn’t know this update existed so boy was I in for a shock lol. Took me over an hour to move out of the spot 😅. One note, the FMC WILL give you your Vspeeds if you load your flight plan (with a SID) in the open world before you get in the plane

Your tutorial videos are very clear and easy to follow, thanks Jonathan. Could you do one for the Longitude aswell? Would be good if they integrated Simbrief too.
Skillful landing with the wind. This was, by far, the best aircraft early on. The mod by Working Title transformed this plane like the recent 152 mod. I noticed that features have been lost but maybe they'll keep updating it. The VNAV is really fun to watch on this jet. It worked so well before and was the only plane that did it. I haven't flown it in a long time. I hope you can install a flight plan from the world map / LNM like before. I don't like programming it like you do. Great video. Thank you.

Haven't flown the CJ4 in ages as I'm stuck on xbox atm and the original systems depth made the plane not particularly enjoyable to fly. Used to enjoy the WT mod on PC so very happy I can get back into a proper CJ4 experience albeit on xbox until I get a new PC. Was pretty rusty in remembering the procedures so this was a great refresher, thanks for that! Would love to see you cover the citation at one stage, never ever bothered with that one at all for similar reasons but it seems that's gone next level as well now.
AAU1 has been out on Xbox beta for a month now. I’ve been flying the CJ4 and Longitude almost exclusively for sometime now. Both are amazing. If youre on Xbox I definitely recommend getting into the betas
@@Spudsmachenzie1 Yeah I thought about doing that, always worry about stability as msfs is flaky enough as it is on xbox, even with this patch I'm still getting the avionics go black upon approaching certain addon airports not to mention CTD's but I guess you could argue that as both a bad or good reason to get into the beta. Quick Question Jonathan. With over 500 hours now on the Kodiak 100, I am looking now to advance myself to corporate jet. Having never flown one in MSFS, I see I have a couple options. This Cessna CJ4 you are showing here, or the Citation Longitude. In your opinion, which one do you believe would be a better choice for someone who has never touched a jet. I would like to get into the one that has the most real options available and working. I understand Working Title has done a lot of the Avionics for both aircraft. I want to pick one and stick with it for learning purposes. Thanks for your great videos. Mike
Also I don't know if this is a problem with the simulator but whenever I try to do an IFR, it's never an option on the pre made requests on the ATC panel. It only works when I set up the whole flight on the world map as "low altitude airway" and "high altitude airway" (also I'm on the Xbox version)
Love the plane so much and the AAU is amazing. But why are the yokes so darn large in the sim CJ4. Unrealistic. Drives me crazy! And yes I know you can hide them, but I like seeing my yoke input.
@@jonbeckett really? Looking at some pics now. They are too wide From what I can tell. They take up half the screen! :) 0:47 in the video shows what I mean
Just thought I would fly the cj4 haven't flown for a while and just because lots of simmers follow you maybe you know the answer to my dilemma. The engines start but no avionics display and the throttle does not move.
So I've been struggling with this for over an hour and still can't figure it out. Changing the altimeter units. I can change them on the PFD via the PFD menu, but they stay imperial on the FMS, so I can't enter QNH in hPa for takeoff PERF. The settings where this should be (IDX -> Settings) do not include altimeter units, I only have ground power, cabin lights, and simbrief ID. Does anyone know how to change the units on the FMS?
Nice video Jonathan, thanks. Did my first flight in this new version of the CRJ...and boy did the plane bounce like a beach ball on landing. Going to play with it more to see if I just Failed. BTW, do you know how to turn of/off the display showing airports? Can't find it in the menus anymore...
So does this mean I can remove my working title mod that fixed all this stuff already? If so, put those boys and girls on the TBM - would love to have a fixed version of that too. Such a dumpster fire.
Are there things to remove from the Community folder before doing this update? I've heard any CJ4 mod should be removed. Please confirm. And thanks Jon for the effort. Very much appreciated.
@@jonbeckett Whoa! Whoa!! Whoa!! Just noticing this! What am I taking out from the Marketplace, please?? Didn't think it had anything to do with the Marketplace!!!
Looks like no Simbrief in the new Avionics update version, so I have reinstated the latest Working Title Mod- we shall see if that works or just screws things up…
I was waiting for the point in your video where second notch of flaps are applied…. My experience with the flight model changes - aircraft pitches up and subsequent airspeed are extreme. Couldn’t possibly know real world aircraft handling but (as a real pilot) can’t imagine that much push on the yoke to maintain consistent rate of descent. AP handles it but manual flying - doesn’t seem right to me.

Yes, I get stuttering, and indeed it is at its worst near or at airports. It started a couple updates ago and never went away for me. I've not really found anybody who had it as well but solved the issue. It really makes take-offs and especially landings tough.
@@jonbeckett I'v gone through the add-ons and done all the graphics cards updates and cant find a conflict. Its moderately frustrating. Thanks for the reply.
I imagine it's a licensing issue. Knowing Navigraph/Simbrief, they didn't agree to allow it in the store (or Microsoft weren't happy with it for some reason).
@@jonbeckett Interesting. If that’s the case, seems like a bit of a backwards decision on the part of Simbrief and Navigraph, especially since you’d need a subscription anyways to use Navigraph. Besides the navigraph/simbrief integration, a lot of other stuff is missing too from the mod, like the cabin announcements and a bunch of other buttons. It’s a shame the mod has been deprecated.
It's much easier to use autothrottle for most of the flight, that way you don't have to keep changing the throttle for climb, cruise and descent. I mean, I assume this plane has AT, I admit I have barely used it so far. The Longitude has it.
Yeah I've been replaying with this since the update and the working title feels far more functional, Sim Brief integration, connecting to ground power, passenger briefs, checklists, charts if using Navigraph don't work and lots of buttons don't work and more. Definitely feels like a downgrade compare to working title.

With AAU1 the approach is a bit strange the AP doesn't do what it's supposed to do. Even for the direct sometimes he switches to the next one
Also the flight model of the working title is 10 times better
Good feedback.
Great tutorial. Have an issue though when i am I try to set course by selecting NAV as instructed I can't get into radio mode LOC1 it keeps going to VOR1. Any help greatly appreciated ta Tony
I think (without looking) it may be LOC appears if you're turning to an ILS. LOC and VOR are functionally equivalent in terms of navigation.
@@jonbeckett great thanks sir. Just confused me as when I was static on the ramp. I can never get LOC after pressing NAV just VOR .... Whereas video you tuned into LOC.
My favorite plane just got better
if I do a direct because there are no mid points or legs to add ...the AP nav doesn't seem to want to take me direct?
You've probably got a big discontinuity in the middle of the flightplan if you haven't configured anything.
Great videos per usual. May I ask what peripherals you're using? Honeycomb, etc? Also does CJ4 have auto throttle?
No Auto Throttle in the CJ4.
I have the Thrustmaster Airbus stick and throttle quadrant.
I really like CJ4, always been my favourite…now even better ! Do you have plans for revisiting Longitude and TBM930 ? I just jumped into Longitude 🛩 hope there’s checklists in the updated version.
I need to go look at the Longitude - I've never really flown it!
@@jonbeckett I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. With the new AAU1, it’s getting quite complex. I must have done something wrong, because Longitude wouldn’t move ! No chocks of course. Didn’t want to waste time, took CJ4 which works great
Quick Question Jonathan. Mike
I prefer the CJ4 - but only really because I have more time in it. They are both good fun.
Also I don't know if this is a problem with the simulator but whenever I try to do an IFR, it's never an option on the pre made requests on the ATC panel. It only works when I set up the whole flight on the world map as "low altitude airway" and "high altitude airway" (also I'm on the Xbox version)
Yes. That's the way the built-in ATC works. You have to pre-file in the world map.
How do you like the cj4 compared to the h-jet in msfs
I like both of them :)
also, curious... does the update make the CJ4 working title mod irrelevant?
Kind of. The version in the sim has some of the integration removed (simbrief, navigraph)
@jonbeckett thanks for the reply Jon! Nice work on the vid =)
@@thedocnak you're welcome :)
Anyone else not able to click the "BARO" knob to switch to STD Baro pressure anymore? All other knobs work normally for me...
That's been wonky for ages. If in doubt, press B.
Love the plane so much and the AAU is amazing. But why are the yokes so darn large in the sim CJ4. Unrealistic. Drives me crazy! And yes I know you can hide them, but I like seeing my yoke input.
They are that big in real ife :)
@@jonbeckett really? Looking at some pics now. They are too wide From what I can tell. They take up half the screen! :)
0:47 in the video shows what I mean
Just thought I would fly the cj4 haven't flown for a while and just because lots of simmers follow you maybe you know the answer to my dilemma. The engines start but no avionics display and the throttle does not move.
Actually a really nice looking jet this. Might reinstall it and give it a go.
I like it :)
Reinstalled and got the WT upgrade, really nice, thanks for the video
Mine doesn't let me stroll through the cabin like you just did. How did you manage that?
I used the drone camera :)
@@jonbeckett A'haaa!! Cheat! 😆
Does anyone know how to change the units on the FMS?
way cool
Are you using fsrealistic pro for your camera movements?
Not in this video :)
I'll have a look later - I was wondering the same myself.
Danke!
Thank you! :)
I accidently deleted mine recently, anyone know how i can get it back. It's still in the Content manager but wont loan/appear in the aircraft list
Can you not install it from the content manager ?
@@jonbeckett No mate, it shows in the Content Manager list as installed, if I click on it, it wants to delete it. Got me stumped
I swear they broke the autopilot altitude selection. I select an altitude and the plane doesn't climb to it. Before the update it worked.
Forgive my stupidity! Why do I seem to always land ILS approaches without setting the course ?
how you move through the aircraft like that...???
With the keyboard and mouse :)
Actually - the opening shot - I used the drone camera, slowed down.
Is this base plane the one available in the standard game or the deluxe edition?
The CJ4 is included with the standard edition.
I don't fly this plane because I don't know how to use that FMS. I'm only familiar with the NXI and GA avionics
Time to learn then :)
@@jonbeckett Right. Just not as straight forward as gps
@@rackum44 It's a great stepping stone towards the big jets though.
@@jonbeckett Yes I agree It's not that I don't want to It's just kind of intimidating
Also there isn't any videos on TH-cam that walk you through the FMS at all.. I looked.
So does this mean I can remove my working title mod that fixed all this stuff already? If so, put those boys and girls on the TBM - would love to have a fixed version of that too. Such a dumpster fire.
I think 3rd party aircraft still require the add-on.
Are there things to remove from the Community folder before doing this update? I've heard any CJ4 mod should be removed. Please confirm.
And thanks Jon for the effort. Very much appreciated.
Yes - remove the working title mod if you have it. Also, remove it from the marketplace too.
@@jonbeckett so why would we do this ? Is the WT mod not valid anymore ?
@@jonbeckett Whoa! Whoa!! Whoa!! Just noticing this! What am I taking out from the Marketplace, please?? Didn't think it had anything to do with the Marketplace!!!
Can you do the TBM930 please 👌🏽
I think you mean 930 ? :)
@@jonbeckett yes sir 930
Wish it had auto throttle I never know what speed to be at
250 above :)
No more simbrief integration?
Wondering the same
I doubt it in the stock version - I know the add-on is still needed for 3rd party aircraft - I foresee some experimentation ahead :)
It will depend on your speed. Lots of people seem to think planes should fly on rails - they don't :)
How do you update it ?
MSFS automatically has the update.
@@jonbeckett thank you. It was actually not working because I still had the working title
Is that the working title mod ?
At the moment this is the stock CJ4 - it got upgraded with the latest sim update.
is this using working title mod?
In the patch notes they said to delete those mods as it’s now built into the simulator
@@mr.futurestrader2115 oh I see but it still lacks some features like linked with simbrief and checklist in mfd but overall its a good update. I hope working title continuing their project with CJ4 in the future tho
@@biansanity yeah, they had to take those out, some licencing bureaucracy thing between MS and Navigraph.
Doesn't seem the TCAS works?
TCAS doesn't work in lots of aircraft in the simulator. It's a real mixed bag - some see AI aircraft, some see multiplayer, some see both.
@@jonbeckett Ok thanks for your rreply...I thought I had done something wrong. Another great video by the way.
Why are there barely any reflections on the displays in MSFS? They look really artificial compared to real life.
Because the developer didn't implement shaders to do that in the 3D model.
At 9:11 I don’t have a departure
I've been having massive stuttering and lag since the last major update. I'm running 32gb and an RTX 2080 Super......so it should be fine. Anyone else suffering from stutter and lag (especially at take off and landing - both critical moments!)
It seems like there's always a new problem everytime they update the simulator. I'm just glad they fixed the CJ4 because it was awful before.
No stutter here. It may be you have an add-on that doesn't like the new version ?
Yes, I get stuttering, and indeed it is at its worst near or at airports. It started a couple updates ago and never went away for me. I've not really found anybody who had it as well but solved the issue. It really makes take-offs and especially landings tough.
@@DavidWadleigh I havent found a solution yet
@@jonbeckett I'v gone through the add-ons and done all the graphics cards updates and cant find a conflict. Its moderately frustrating. Thanks for the reply.
Is it just me or does it seem to have less features than the mod?
@@joelmulder We'll never know the real reason :)
Нормально
It's much easier to use autothrottle for most of the flight, that way you don't have to keep changing the throttle for climb, cruise and descent. I mean, I assume this plane has AT, I admit I have barely used it so far. The Longitude has it.
CJ4 has no auto throttle.
Is it just me or is this a massive downgrade compared to the WT mod?
It's a subset of the functionality - almost certainly for legal reasons. There's nothing to stop you installing the Working Title mod :)
Yeah I've been replaying with this since the update and the working title feels far more functional, Sim Brief integration, connecting to ground power, passenger briefs, checklists, charts if using Navigraph don't work and lots of buttons don't work and more. Definitely feels like a downgrade compare to working title.
@@jonbeckett According to WT it isn't compatible anymore.
@@KjartanAndersen Ah well :/
FPS drop with this update as well.
I didn't notice. I have the sim pegged at 30fps anyway - chasing FPS leads to madness, and hairs on the palm of your hands :)
"Study level" is the most over used and over rated thing.
None of the aircraft in Flight Simulator are really "study" level - other than perhaps the Fenix Airbus.
@@jonbeckett & PMDG 737 😀
This update sucks sooo much, WT was wayyy better. Now I don't have any joy flying the cj4 :/
Why not ask them if the features you miss are coming rather than complain elsewhere about it ? They have a discord server.
@@jonbeckett Well I'm just expressing my opinion about it and good point, hopefully they will implement some cool features like before :)
@@nexo5232 Seriously though - give them the feedback - they're a great team. I'm betting it was a legal reason that some of the functionality is gone.
@@jonbeckett Will do thanks! And also great job with videos keep them coming! ;)
