Fantastic that he takes so many risks- no modern tenor will do this anymore! That’s the whole point of a live concert- experiencing what the singer goes through and shares with us. Bless him!
This was almost fifty years ago to the day. He was roughly 52 years old. His voice was not what it used to be, but the artist is still there. Ahd he will always be. Let¡s thank God for giving us Pippo!
At the time of this concert he had already been singing for over 30 years! And he was a very busy artist. By that time he had hundreds of operas, concerts, and recording sessions. He also had performed on every continent except Antarctica. And if penguins were opera fans, he would have performed there also.
The little things ... Di Stefano turning around and singing to everyone but the part "la...je resterai toujours" is sang to the left side first time and 2nd time to the almost opposite direction . He wants everyone to feel like the only person that he was singing too. What a class act from him. Even the way he walks out , he literatelly acknowledges everyone. Grande Pippo.
Regarding some comments about an aging singer, he was only 52 in this video. While hardly a baby tenor, he was also not Methusaleh. His entrance should be witnessed by every aspiring singer. He is a showman, gracious and charming in addition to his great musical talent.
It always seems that Di Stefano is singing just for me. His intimacy with the public &beautiful quality of voice attributed to his popularity and greatness.
@@pippofan Very true. I saw Di Stefano in Concert circa 1962 at Carnegie Hall. He sounded much like he did on records, and as Corelli has stated, his voice was round, rich and beautiful.
Always a musician first. A supreme example of aging singers battling against eroding technique with breath and soul. Sure, the voice could be better, but Di Stefano could always sing as if the composer wrote the very aria for him. Bravo!
THAT was a lesson to all singers on HOW to SING TO AN AUDIENCE. He strode out to center, introduced, then sang to each person in that concert hall. Perfect.
Nello7 It is more of the setting of the audience surrounding back and forth of the performer at the center. I like the intimacy in singing of di Stefano, but what you said is more from the setting.
For me, the beautiful sound is what is important - like with a symphony I need no words to get transported. My lyric-friend sang this in college, so I had him sing it at my 1949 wedding . Since so far I haven't found a lyric tenor doing this song on TH-cam, this is my favorite rendition - especially how he takes thost gorgeous high notes. Even with just a piano, instead of the orchestra that others have.
Di Stefano was quoted as saying "Singing is a conjugation of the words and the music, not an exposition of beautiful long notes, this is how I sing, I sing the words. This is Di Stefano."
This performance by the great Di Stefano, is reminding me every few years, since my 20ties, the true essence of music, at the end of the day....Thank you Maestro. This last note will live for the ages...
Quite beautiful, especially this late in his career. His middle voice is still there and of course his pianissimi were always beautiful. A voice for the ages
The natural voice was a gorgeous mix of vulnerability and emotion and total lion roar. His early years were used up with back to back booking so the voice was never going to be in the best shape as he got older. He never really changed his technique or made adjustments as much as he could had. He also smoked a lot. Indeed people just aged faster then. Now singers go on for a lot longer virtually untouched unless they have pushed which many of course always will. This song is charming and open hearted.
Giuseppe Di Stefano
Rudolf Bing said Di Stefano's fortissimo to piano on the high C in Faust was the loveliest sound a human voice has made. I disagree. Despite the obvious imperfections in his voice by this time, the 'la ... je resterai toujours, toujours' is the most beautiful singing I've ever heard. Nothing for me matches that sweetness, that mingled happiness and regret...
Those pianissimi!!! so risky haha!! incredible... what a beautiful sound! it seems like he was taking a shower, singing just for himself. However, he was in front of thousand of people, and televised for another hundred of thousands...Pippo io t'amo!!!
This aria was very much more successful than his duets with Callas. But considering the horrific state of singing today the vicious reviews the two of them got seem very unfair.
Inmenso.
1:11 Very similar to Superman Main Theme by John Williams. The early notes of this music are the same of 1940´s Universal Movie Studios Intro, "A Son of Frankenstein" by Frank Skinner, and "At Sword´s Point" Movie Title Sequence by Roy Webb.

@@grr8048 I am not kidding. I am tired of Di Stefano's scooping and portamento. He made the Italian songs very popular especially Napolitan Canzone. O, the pianissimi.
Look at what I wrote earlier. "Oh, the pianissimi." And yes, how he greets the entire audience.
This. The whole performance is charactised by generosity
@Celon. The difference between Maestro Di Stefano and the other great tenors of his era was - they sang into a theater, Di Stefano sang to your soul.

AWESOME
Ah ! Laissez-moi conter mes peines
Et mon émoi
Vainement, ma bien aimée
On croit me désespérer
Près de ta porte fermée
Je veux encore demeurer
Les soleils pourront s'éteindre
Les nuits remplacer les jours
Sans t'accuser et sans me plaindre
Là-haut, je resterai toujours
Toujours !
¡Ah! Déjame contar mis penas
Y mi emoción
En vano mi amado
Ellos piensan que estoy desesperado
Por tu puerta cerrada
Todavía quiero quedarme
Los soles se pueden apagar
Las noches reemplazan a los días
Sin acusarte y sin quejarme
Allá arriba siempre me quedaré
Siempre !
Se que tu alma es dulce
Y la hora llegará pronto
Donde la mano que me empuja lejos
Hacia el mío se estirará
No llegues tarde
Para dejarte ablandar
Si Rozenn pronto no llega
Moriré, ay,
Ay, moriré
A beautiful voice a God
