- Hello Everyone! I bring you today a rare comparison of two incredible instruments, 2 Stradivarius from 1696 and 1694, Lord Aylesford and London-Boccherini, I play the Lord Aylesford since 6 years thanks to the generosity of the Nippon foundation in Japan, and Kian Soltani, plays his cello thanks to the Beares Society in London,
In this video we used 4K video quality and High fidelity audio to try to show as best as possible how this two instruments compare.

I like the Lord Aylesford better, because of its warm, full and deep sound.
Pablo knows this cello way better, so it's not completely fair to compare like this.
Concur, the London is just a bit brighter.
I think the big difference comes from the strings. Versum Thomastik has a different character than the whatever Larsen

It seems like the Lord Aylesford has a darker and deeper tone while the London-Boccherini has a fuller and brighter sound.

This is amazing! Thanks for sharing. London-Boccherini cello sounds a bit more "mellow" but the lower register sounds a bit deeper with the Lord Aylesford. First impression only. Both are incredibly beautiful instruments, invaluable, really. Will listen more of this, thanks!

Oh my the lower registers BLEW ME AWAY. but I suspect it’s your superb playing which produced that completely amazing sound.
For me, the Lord Aylesford tone since longer was, and now even more is, the most beautiful cello sound I've ever heard (especially in your hands, Pablo :-) ). But I admit that this is also due to my love for big, full and deep sounding resonances coming from instruments with a big lower bout. Not by chance I play a Montagnana copy...
It’s interesting like how it was said in the video that despite being made at relatively the same time, the instruments are so different. It seems like (though it may be different in person) that the London has a warmer tone that allows for more color variance, while the Aylesford has a more brilliant projecting tone.
Other way round.
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to hear & compare the instruments, & learn a little of their history. The Lord A has the most amazing lower & middle registers I have heard but the London B has a most beguiling upper register & capacity for dolce. Exquisite!

I 💖 Boccherini as if I had known him throughout my life. I even keep a drawning of him in my mobile in his memory. He had sad deep eyes and his music is a true reflection of his deep soul.

Both instruments sound amazing to me. There were some subtle differences between them, but they both leave me gobsmacked.

London-Boccherini, due to the smaller body, actually has a more focus sound and projection. Low position sounds like a viola, which is filled with the wood's tone.

I still love the Lord Aylesford's lower register 😻💙💙, but to me it seems like the London-Boccherini upper register sounds a bit louder, not *that* loud, but the LA upper register is slightly muted compared to the Boccherini one 😕
It would be extremely interesting how the comparison sounds with the same strings on both instuments:)

Looks like the Lord Aylesford is the commodity 😏 I was totally gravitating toward it myself. I feel like it might be best to play solo Bach or chamber music with Lord Aylesford. Whereas the London-Boccherini might be be well-suited for the concert hall and could really cut above an orchestra. Both absolutely gorgeous.
It is not so easy to comparatively judge the tone of two fine cellos because so much depends on the adjustments made between the cellist and a truly excellent luthier, , including the choice and cut of the bridge, the soundpost, the choice of the individual strings for the cello, and even the playing that it receives. You can be certain that Pablo's cello is adjusted to perfection and to his playing. The Lord Aylesford comes off notably better in this comparison, and of course Pablo's performance, musicianship, and expressiveness is superb.

A more interesting comparison would be to add a fine modern cello to the comparison. It’s been well established that even professional players in a blind test often pick the modern instrument as the best.
I like definettely Aylesford but wandered Magnacore and Versum( I'm not sure) compares?
What bow do they use on these?
It is encouraging to discover that young musicians are given the chance to play great instruments. To me, these two sound totally different, though. And they obviously look totally different (setting aside the size). Why is the "London" so beaten up??? Conversely, how come that the varnish on the other one is in such a good condition? I believe/hope that it was not reapplied.
English language issue: the correct wording is "... I have played Lord Aylesford for six years, ...".
I would definitely prefer the sound of Lord Aylesford :-). Thank you to the young men for this interesting presentation.

Excelente video muy buena grabación, Ayslesford my superior mayor rango de frecuencia mucho más abierto ! ideal sala grande gran cuerpo, probaría otras cuerdas pirazzi o spirocore tungsteno, larsen no tienen la suficiente tensión para este cello. El Boccherini sonido cerrado, rangos medios muy altos, no es un timbre bonito o fino, tiene cuerpo pero se siente abombado, probaría un Puente Frances en este cello .
First cello is much warmer and has more depth. Second cello almost sounds more German, more direct.

Can you explain more about what it means to “cut down” a cello?
as I understand it, earlier design of cellos(baroque style) have a much larger body on the bottom end. Current style of cellos are shorter. So to make old cellos more usable, luthiers cut the bottom part off. It takes a lot of skill and risk to do that without damaging and making it seamless.
I prefer the boccherini in general, it seems that the sound is deeper and low register is just amazing. However in the higher register I think the lord Ayesford sounds better.
Why did people cut the cello down? What was wrong with the original instrument?

It's hard to believe anyone would think that amount a vibrato is appropriate for any style of classical music. It's like a caricature of post Romantic classical music cliches. It's very distracting to never just let the tone sit. Would be interesting to hear them played in the matter of Boccherini, with only occasional vibrato used as an ornament.

Not a fair comparison simply because the type of string on the 2 Strads are not the same

you can really hear the difference. But I think he sounds better on Lord Aylesford because he is used to the nuances of his own cello, and slightly unfamiliar with the London. Strads are known to have a learning curve
That’s definitely true! Took me a few years to get the best out of the Aylesford, and only spent a few mins with the London. To take in consideration!
You should have used same strings. Versum is a big different to Whatever Larsen

I thought „London“ was also played by István Vardai at 2014 ARD, but I’m not sure.

Aylesford needs to lose the Larsen and go to Versum like the London. Versum is more honest, open and ready to project and change colour. And even before that, lose the Wittner tailpiece. Bois d’Harmonie that the London has is much much better. Better set-up on the London. Amazing cellos, though, obviously ♥️

Not the same strings . For me Lord sounds better in the low part and the London better in the mid and upper. But both have huge sound !
They're "loaning" Strad cello's???? :) (No offence) To 2 TH-camrs??? :) Even as good as the both of you are. I would have thought Strads would only be "loaned" to players like YoYo Ma. And must be returned after that performance. Taken by "armed guards".
Strads. Ironic that today no luthiers have access to t he same wood (trees) used to make Strads yet 2 hi-end grand piano makers DO...Fazioli and C. Bechstein.

Yucko el stinko. I've never been a fan of Strad cellos, and this only reinforces my impression. Too much grunt, not enough clear tone.
