"Billie can't sing live"???!!! In what alternate dimension? Now admittedly, her concert performances can be a bit sketchy, but when she's not jumping and running around an enormous stage, her live performances are immaculate. Every. Single. One.
Also I kinda like how her concert vocals aren’t always perfect cause you can tell she’s having so much fun and you can feel her energy. I’d much rather see her jump around than have her sound perfect but just stand there lol
@@icantthinkofaname1062 yeah same. If I wanted her to sound exactly like the studio I’d listen to it instead of attending a concert. You attend a concert to hear her sing in person and the energy you get from being around other fans and the energy Billie gives. When she’s jumping around while performing and giving energy, which is part of attending a concert, her live vocals may be imperfect but it’s better than if she were to just stand in place and sing it exactly how she would in the studio.

exactly I watched doja cat and then billie back to back in ACL last month. Doja was a preformance but it was all backtracked and sounded identical but she wasnt even signing. Billie was different from studio but it was all sung by her and made it so much more enjoyable. I thought she had the best stage presence and vocals from all preformances I saw that weekend.

Catherine O’Hara’s voice acting and singing on Sally is so good. She really managed to transform Sally’s voice into something that is completely different and much lighter than her actual voice. You wouldn’t even know it’s her unless you were to look up the voice cast for “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. 👌
The people who say she can't sing live are just people who don't understand that physical activity can make you lose your breath and strain your voice a bit.
She is a very active performer, of course that effects her voice on stage. And it's still good!

Also, Billie's best trait imo - in this specific performance, I mean - is that she has the _motion_ down *perfectly.* Her voice sounds like a fallen autumn leaf getting caught up in a lonely wind through a cold, bare town. It literally fits the _setting_ of the movie, not just the character and/or aesthetics. It's PERFECT in that way. Remember when Katy Perry asked us if we ever felt like a plastic bag drifting through the wind? Sally answered, "Uh, well, I guess- um, does it still count if it's a leaf instead of a bag?" Katy's probably just been living in the city too long.
I loved your enthusiasm and your utter, unbridled joy over the course of this video. I got a little teary at times, too. I think I might just be having my daily existential crisis, though. I literally forgot Catherine O'Hara was Sally, so I didn't make the connection to the face. She was responsible for quite a bit of our holiday enjoyment, it seems! _The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice,_ AND the first two _Home Alone_ movies? We're lucky to have her! Haters literally need to stop being so mean. As you can see, almost every vocal coach thinks her voice is amazing. It doesn’t matter if she ‘whispers’. Her voice is wonderful, and it touches millions of hearts. They don’t have to like her voice, but they shouldn’t bully her because it’s not their style.

@@louern123 I get what you mean, and agree. This isn't really her type of cover, usually she takes a hard right and makes them really quite different than the original but when Walt Disney approached her to do this version for the '08 release of the "Nightmare Revisited" album I think she had to stay mostly true to the original. The album version is a better representation than her live on Jay.
Her other covers like "Going to California" (Led Zeppelin), "It's a Fire" (Portishead), "Across the Universe" (the Beatles) & "Baby did a bad, bad thing" (Chris Isaac) etc are good if you like genuine re-interpretations of songs and not just someone singing the same song/melody in their own voice 🙂
ETA: Not making excuses for her either but I think her timing might be slightly off as she was shitting bricks about playing the harp live on TV when she'd just learnt it lol.

I got to see this show live, and hot damn it was amazing! Seeing all the og voices and guests having fun on stage, seeing the live orchestra, THE REALISTIC JACK PUPPET LOOKING SO COOL, it was all so awesome. And Billie knocked it out of the park, she did such a good spin on Sally's vocals

I was at this (the 2nd night) and it was so cool!! This was my second time going to this event (my best friend's mom sings in the choir for it every year, so I get to go sometimes which is thrilling), and I loved what Billie brought to Sally. I'm such a huge fan and am seeing her live next April, but it was really special to see her perform in this context. It was beautiful, she looked incredible, and she seemed genuinely happy and excited to be there. And Danny Elfman absolutely does sound incredible for his age. Seeing him without his glasses, though, was weirdly uncanny, lol.

For the record the original voice actress is Catharine O'Hara and she is an icon. She is actually a really talented singer and has sung in other films she has done, such as "A Mighty Wind" but her voice sounds "weaker" as Sally because she is singing as the character. Sally is soft spoken and shy and so is her singing voice. It actually genius. Loved everything that Billie did with the song. She made it her own. But nothing beats original.
