I personally like that she belts very rarely, because when she does it makes it interesting and surprising. My dad was told as a young musician to hold back what you show to the world, and leave people wanting more, because if you show all that you’re capable of too soon, there is not much left to give and show. I think that’s what Billie is doing and I think it’s extremely clever for maintaining interest and relevance in this kind of industry.
Hm I agree. And it’s mostly the singers with unique voices and not powerhouses. When someone belts all the time, it’s not surprising. But when a singer rarely goes to that high/low register or belts then it’s surprising since it hasn’t been shown.
She's usually so controlled and cryptic or cool and slick, that her just letting that RAW emotion out with the diaristic lyrics just makes it so cathartic. It's like the first half she's doing her usual thing and then the emotion bubbles up and over and comes and swings at you. IT'S SO GOOD.
Billie is very hit or miss for me. I've liked a few of her songs and respect her artistry, but haven't personally enjoyed most of her music. I love Finneas! BUT THIS SONG. OH MY GOSH. I can't. This song is absolutely insane. I literally just keep watching random reaction videos because I love to see people's reaction to the TWO total twists. I've been waiting for this!
I remember doing this on a bad day. Not in the rain but i climbed up on top of the hills and just screamed my lungs out. It feels great! Except if you get a sore throat lol
this song really hits for people who have been in an abusive relationship. the video really captures the grieving process. starts out sad and like starting to open up about things that happened, the flooding is 2 things to me; when youre drowning in a relationship or when youre processing the reality of what they've done to you. what you feel you've "allowed" them to do to you, and then the roof top, the rain is now cleansing here of all his shit. shes free from him, shes expressed her emotions and begun (or metaphorically has already) healed.
Wow, this explanation is everything! It does defos hit hard. When i first heard this song i sat on the floor and just sobbed when she was belting in the rain.
I think the end: her being stranded on top of a house is kind of effective, in terms of showing the message. Yes, she’s realised that this relationship is shitty, but it also highlights the ‘lost freedom’ that comes after. After being so dependent on your partner, you lose yourself. So finding yourself can feel like you’re stranded alone, despite leaving the partner being cathartic. Idk, that’s what I thought it symbolised.
i completely agree, the second half really gave those people a relatable voice and pushed out the grief, anger, and almost the suffering out of the body . very cleansing
I feel like she's channelling her inner Avril Lavigne in this song. She's always been a huge fan of hers and the second part definitely gives me the punk rock vibes that we were used to from Avril. And I love it.
In her happier than ever interview she mentioned that she wanted to make this album timeless and relaxed, not having any order or theme to follow, which is how she liked it so thats why it included “therefore I am” and “my future” in the album :)

I don’t usually listen to billie’s songs because I don’t relate to her style of singing but this song I have been jamming on since it came out. Such an amazing song
The first time I heard this song was 2 months ago at firefly festival live. When she sang 'you made me hate this city' and the crowd screamed the lyrics at her, all the hairs on my body stood up and I felt this like weird feeling rundown from my head to my toes like electricity. It literally changed my life. I was never a Billie fan before I saw her live and now I think she is literally a goddess.

That's when I knew he didn't listen to the whole thing and when I asked him he said he did. I found a video where it only had the second half of the song and I sent it to him and he said "holy shit this is such a good ass fucking song by her I've never heard it before!" 🤨 This was only 2 hours apart.

As soon as I saw the title I was really excited to see tristan's reaction to the second part of the song because I knew that he would love that part and I had the biggest smile on my face when I saw his reaction to it !!!!
I think I love when she performs live at the Grammys even better than her “official music video “. She doesn’t miss a beat and sounds so perfect it could almost be prerecorded…but it’s NOT. She and Phinn make it work even while having to obey the GRAMMYS NO NAUGHTY WORDS policy. Her interaction and love for her band mates especially Phin is beautiful to watch while she’s raging in actual wet rain soaking them on stage. It’s like she loves singing this particular song just as much as we love hearing it. Seriously go watch if you haven’t already seen it.

I am not the biggest fan of Billie (her music isn’t really my thing) but I have to admit that this song is amazing. The drums and electric guitar pared with her vocals sound amazing.
The highest note she sang on this song is an E5! (That too it’s phrased!) You hear it a little bit on the part “don’t waste the time I don’t have”. Otherwise there’s a lot of D5s when the second part starts. I can’t wait to hear her do that long c5 live cause she’d kill it!
I always thought with Billie singing so soft was to be kind of different in a sense to capture our attention with the music scene when she first came out. To make people actually LISTEN to her not only lyrically but vocally since everyone sings either full tilt or ballad-esque with pop. With emotional songs. Now with HTE, it's like, "phuck it, I'm breaking through to make you guys go off tilt with my gift but to listen FULLY." Billie has a clear, good voice that I felt she wanted to hide but tease some, example like you said with, NTTD towards the end to hear a different range, and then with this, Billie changed the scene. When she and Finneas did the sample originally, it was always the first part of the song that i could find. Then with this full song, Billie went full open with what sounded like a chest and full diaphragm sound that we weren't expecting at ALL. And I am here for it.
This song is amazing I think. I love the second half sound, but I think the beginning sound is a beautiful build up to the second part, that just makes the second part more epic .And of course that transition was freaking awesome. You just are so clearly so genuinely excited and passionate about this, and it's just absolutely contagious to see your shocked but celebratory reactions to where she took this song. It also mirrors how I felt when I heard it for the first time, which was when she was on SNL. Subscribing, and whenever I have an income again, planning on supporting on Patreon, because if this is the sort of vibe your videos have, I'm so here for it.
This is one of my favorite Billie and Finneas songs. Besides the obvious shift from the first to the 2nd half, it's just so relatable at the end, and therapeutic. It sounds like she really needed to get that out of her system in order tk keep her on track to actually becoming "Happier than ever". It's just so creative - the way it went from the quiet beginning (which I saw today she posted a video of the day her and Finneas wrote that part and it was July 2019!) So in between then and now, it's amazing to see how the song evolved. It's almost like she needed to live a bit more life to be able to get to the point of writing that 2nf half. I'm rambling, I know, I'm jut so in love with this song. One of my favorite of hers of all time. I'm excited to see more of your reviews of the album, Tristan

Like, this song already gives me a lot of emotions, but seeing you react at 3:55 legitimately has made me start crying happy tears. You just are so clearly so genuinely excited and passionate about this, and it's just absolutely contagious to see your shocked but celebratory reactions to where she took this song. It also mirrors how I felt when I heard it for the first time, which was when she was on SNL.
It's just really great to see somebody so clearly and unabashedly excited by music, and it made me really happy inside. Subscribing, and whenever I have an income again, planning on supporting on Patreon, because if this is the sort of vibe your videos have, I'm so here for it.
i listened to happier than ever, i got everything i wanted
Loved watching you in this. I love this song. It's such a gem.

“I love Rodrigo is about to bust through that door” lmao that would be iconic thi
Tristan is totally confused at the end. He’s like wtf is going on??!!!
“what you’re here for” lmao I love Tristan
I smiled the whole way through your reaction! 🤣 so good
honestly I think that Tristan makes simple things like a reaction to something fabulous
