It's easy to solo even though you are running 4 heroes. It is possible to solo with less heroes but the scenarios are designed for four so you would have to take out monsters (if only 2 heroes, halve the number of monsters). This looks great! The main things our group didn't like about Advanced Hero Quest were all the crazy stupid random events either getting to a settlement or being able to find equipment (bandages and other mundane supplies) and train once we got there. Nothing like not being able to find stuff because villages don't have a lot of stock or your character can't train because you either can't find the trainer or get one of the 'run out of town' results. Our group found the Hammer of Sigmar. Yep, used it during a half of an adventure. On the way to a city, lost it in a random event (hurricane or something, geez we were pissed!). This is one of those "shut up and take my money!" purchases.
He emails the purchaser with a code or link to get the files. Might be because it was over the weekend. If you don't get anything soon, try emailing him. Tell me if that doesn't work.
HEROQUEST REVISITED You can play any of the Heroquest adventures using the Advanced Heroquest rules. Replace the Heroquest rules for movement combat and magic with the Advanced Heroquest rules. Use the Heroquest rules for placing monsters, searching, treasure cards and so on. Whenever a Hero is directed to lose a Body Point, he must lose 1 Wound or 1 Fate Point instead. All monsters that are encountered are assumed to be of the standard type (not Champions this is from page 46 of the Advanced Heroquest rule book
I keep half joking about converting the Heroquest missions into the dungeon saga ruleset and component group. Maybe this weekend I will have to give it a go.
Couple of key differences. DS due to the magic structure and the nature of the minions generally needs something to push the pace. If you let the heroes essentially swat every door, it is not ideal. Also need a little tweaking of traps and searching.
@@bradp6452 Do you think just using the combat rules and leaving the other rules (magic, traps etc...) basically the same (adjusted values here and there) would work? I'd also plug in the skeleton/bones mechanics to I think.
@@sethpeterson8261 My plan is probably best described as a DS campaign inspired by the classic heroquest adventure plots and maps. Then use it as a testing ground for modifications/alternative rules to DS which may appear in later stuff.
You purchase the game by going to the website and clicking on the "Buy Now" yellow button to the right side of the page. Once you buy, Alex will email you so you can download the files. I just checked the website and it is working fine--not sure why your computer doesn't like it.
Recently reacquired the original heroquest. I wasn't looking for this but I'm glad I found it! edit: This would go great with "Dungeon Books of Battle Mats".
Absolutely would work. I bought the very first one, Castle Ravenloft but got rid of it because it was too simplistic and random for my tastes. But the components would work well with Dungeon Crawl!
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately this just isn't the ruleset, or vibe/flavor I was hoping it would be. However I bought it anyway to support the creator and his obvious passion for his project and to show my appreciation for the amazing amount of work he's obviously poured into it. It might not be for me, but I'm sure it's awesome to tons of others.
@@gaminggeek241 Well I asked you for this video, no reason I couldn't do what you requested in return Ha! I hope he gets a good spike in sales and that helps out and allows him to finally finish it up in the way he wants. EDIT: I also dig his crazy stylized artwork in it - EDIT 2: I'll also say the more I read the more I see why you want to use it for HeroQuest. Everything outside of the basic mechanics and combat mechanics is really good. All the class/race/leveling options. Rules for dark and bashing/lockpicking. The guilds/optional rules & charts. Good stuff. Glad I bought it.
Gaminggeek can you do a more in depth video on the rules of Dungeon Crawl? We bought the game and ran a one shot with it's mchanics and seemed to be clunky... have to have had something wrong? A battle with 2 small goblins took forever because no one was hitting.
Yeah, sometimes the dice rolls make some of the battles long so you probably aren't doing something wrong. We house-ruled a rest action that allows you to regain 2 adrenaline. Using adrenaline adds more dice to your attack so if you are finding it difficult to hit, don't skimp on using adrenaline to boost your attacks. Regarding a video, I plan on doing a play-through once the 2nd edition of HeroQuest ships this fall.
@@gaminggeek241 Thanks, but that was a main question too. We only see adrenaline mentioned once or twice but it doesn't tell us the mechanics such as how much to start with, who uses it etc. I MAY have missed it, perhaps it's in a section I can't find / didn't print idk. but I've looked through twice and still not getting it, lol
@@creepybunny255 No problem, on the top of page 24 under "Add Up Stats" it says "Each Hero's Adrenaline is his Beef + Zip + 3." It's also on page 18 where you get all the rules for Adrenaline usage.
It's a good replacement for HQ--simple and easy to learn for beginners but has enough upgrades and options for veterans. I like other crawlers better, like Shadows of Brimstone and am looking forward to Tanares Adventures, Stormsunder, and Oathsworn but those are more complex and I wouldn't necessarily play with children nor beginners.
Hi Gaminggeek. Great video as usual. Something that puzzled me was that you have this awesome Heroquest'ish board you have created with fantastic hand painted miniatures and this wonderful alternate ruleset. Why them have you backed the Hero quest reprint? Seems like it will be a real let down in comparison!
That's a great question--it is all for nostalgic reasons because I have such fond memories of playing it when I was younger and it was my first dungeon crawler. But you are correct, I already have the board, miniatures, and this superior alternative ruleset so there isn't really a logical reason to purchase it. Who knows? I may give it away next year when it delivers to one of my Patreon supporters.
Well, there's also the all-the new scenarios in 2 new quest books (one by an original designer), access to the expansions if you don't already own them, Plastic furniture instead of cardboard including way better doors, several new classes. Plus the new mini designs for the core heroes and monsters are better than the originals. The new hero designs really suck though... Then there's whats been hinted at: An additional add-on Big Boss campaign, potential 4th new class, new alternate rules etc...
You won a digital copy of Dungeon Crawl! Thanks for being a patron too--I'll send Alex your email and you should receive a link to the download. And yes, you can play this on the original HQ board.
Looks really promising. Would check the rulebook out. Thank you for promoting it. Not really a fan of healing items being used in an instant from the backpack. But perhaps it makes sence in this system. P. S. "Barny is a dwarf..." - well, that was a surprise...
Great video! Quick question, what do you do for playing cards, print on cardstock and laminate? The rulebook you bind with a binding machine right? TIA. Best
OK, so i've gone about 8 mins in on this video and im already thinking "updated heroquest rules". True the old "original" rules are for kids so they are very very....very basic. But if you master those rules then these are just for added fun and are better for adults. I will try these out. Again awesome video explaning the most of this set.
Sorry, I know this is not a recent video, but where did you print the rulebook? I bought this game and am trying to find somewhere to print it but every place I try says they cannot print it because the fonts are not embedded.
@@gaminggeek241 Yes, it is a PDF which is why I was confused. I've never had such an issue before. Thankfully, though, I think I now have a solution: apparently my employer increased the file sizes we can accept from outside emails. So now I can send it to my work email address and print it at the office. Thanks for responding!! :-)
This is great! As someone currently working on their own custom rules, this is some amazing material! Thank you for pointing me toward it! As an aside, do you have links to the STLs that you're using for your terrain/walls/Doors? I'd love to order/print some myself. Thanks!
Glad this is helpful! Check out some of my other videos where I provide information and links to using Dragon's Rest STL files to make the dungeon. they were created for HeroQuest originally.
I donated to smackwell after seeing your vid, but i never recieved the files, thanks for the amazing reviews, i was wondering if you cant help me get in contact with the author of the print and play.
Wanted to again thank gaminggeek and alex for the dungeon crawl download. Got a dumb question did you put the dungeon crawl rule book binder together yourself or did someone else?.
I had it done at a print store. It cost about $30 USD for one color copy for the cover and the rest black and white, along with binding costs. You can find cheaper with online printing companies, although shipping might be more expensive.
OK. Asking again. Where did you get yours printed at? I just priced Office Depot and it came up to $83 just to print it of like what you have there... that's insane.
Is that color copies? That's super expensive. I printed it at my local Office Depot for about $30 for B&W (color cover) and spiral binding with clear cover and black vinyl back. You can get even a better deal with online print services--try googling.
@@sethpeterson8261 At that price, you might want to wait until the office opens up again! A lot of the PDF is monochrome so you could be selective with which pages to print in color and do the rest in B&W.
@@gaminggeek241 For sure. I'll be waiting until at least june of next year before return to office they say (eesh), but I'll be back to unlimited full color high quality printing. I can even print 11x17 heavy cardstock there which is how I got printed my oversized Monolith Conan tiles (that Office Depot quoted me several hundred to do... damn)
I don't have HeroQuest (yet?) but I have played one third of the Dungeon Crawl campaign before my group dissolved and it was great. Simple, fun but with enough decisions to take to not make it boring. The progression system, the skills and treasures/artifacts are top.
That's what I love the most about DC--the leveling options and different paths to take. Any dungeon crawler has to have good leveling options for me to like which is why I enjoy Gloomhaven, Shadows of Brimstone, and Middara. I'm hoping Descent 3rd edition will be like this too.

I recently was looking for a new dungeon crawl ruleset. Something in between Dungeon Saga and D&D, and this might be the perfect choice! Looking forward to reuse the classic 'Das schwarze Auge' (Dark Eye) Board Games 😎
@@sethpeterson8261 Judging by the video, Dungeon Crawl seems to have more overall options, possible player actions, varied turn order, events and character levelling. We did enjoy DS (painted most Minis, doors etc), but if you look for example at "move first, then 1 action", and no search options, no use for exploration, its just "go from a-b before the time is up without getting stuck". (We played the undead campaign and the tyrant of halpi, but did not use the Adventurers Companion). Both time the heroes won if they rushed from start to finish, both times the Overlord won if he dispatched the wizard quickly ;-) . I am hoping that in Dungeon Crawl there is a real point to explore the dungeon and discover treasures or dangerous traps. Additionally you might level up your hero... for instance, i like the option to join a guild or learn new skills, aquire items and new weapons... Dungeon Saga has predefined character loadouts per scenario. So, i guess there should have been just something "more" to Dungeon Saga.
@@rainerbreitsprecher7960 I see what you mean, and I agree with you that Dungeon Crawl is better than Dungeon Saga for most everything else (searching, adventuring, classes/races, skills, leveling etc...), . I was speaking specifically about the turn-by-turn combat actions which is where DS has more to it tactically with engagement arcs, facing, outnumbering, breaking away, how damage works, how armor works, I think the dice comparison mechanics are better etc... But yes, I agree the rest is better done in Dungeon Crawl.
@@gaminggeek241 thanks for the answer. My favorite system Is Melee/Wizard from Steve Jackson Games. The whole new Fantasy Trip edition Is so cool but i need to get a bit More boardgamey with her and the current gaming group.
This is a great video covering this game! I don't spend as much time on BGG as I used to (work/covid), but I'm VERY much looking forward to being able to play it. Question, though, which terrain set do you think works best for it? It looks like you're using the Dragon's Rest set to recreate the HeroQuest map (you covered that on an earlier video), but does that also work with other modules like "Infernus"? I'm itching to put my printer to work...
Yes, if you take a look at this video, you can see how I can configure the board for Infernus: th-cam.com/video/-SfzX_FO83Q/w-d-xo.html If you print the Dragon's Rest tiles, they are infinitely configurable and you will be able to make any dungeon you want.
This sounds great, considering I've only just discovered the HeroQuest crowdfunding, 22hrs before it ends - wow great advertising Hasbro - and came here from GamingGeek's video on how to buy it from Aus. The unlocks, new hero mini design, cost, marketing, info on Hasbro's actual page for it are all leaving a bad taste in my mouth, and so I'm going to go with Dungeon Crawl instead! I'll budget the difference in price to adding to Dungeon Crawl if it's fun to play, like 3D or 2.5D walls. Thanks Gaminggeek!
This is cool. I will definitely be interested in a Kickstarter to support him. Are you going to set this up for him? I know what medical issues are. Had to take another mortgage out to help my kid. Still paying for it but almost done.
I won't be setting up the Kickstarter since I don't have any experience! I'm glad that you are almost out from underneath the weight of medical debt. Hope you child is doing well.
Purchased and waiting for info to download. Not sure given he is a one man creator that KS would be the best avenue. IMHO, he should move his work to DriveThruRPG and its derivative sites and have Print On Demand Options and then work on making real cards and aids that he could also sell as add-ons. Once he draws a large following and hopefully makes more money then he could go to KS.
Thank you for the detailed overview of Dungeon Crawl. I'm interested. On another subject, do you have any experience with Dungeon Universalis? Its currently back on kickstarter.
I looked into it but it has a really crunchy ruleset (relatively complex). I'm all about simplifying things but if you like deep and complex games which combine RPG elements with tactical skirmish rules, then Dungeon Universalis is for you! Especially since they are providing all of the cards and elements printed for you. I don't think it would be easy to adapt to HeroQuest though.
Me and my Fiends are the Old School AD&D First edition type, this would be a good game for us, Universalis just has to much tinkering with this and that for a Simple fun Hack n Slash. but to each there own, PS Hated Gloom haven, I dont like Being limited to what I can do by Random cards and running out we loose, its more of a Card Puzzle game wrapped in a dungeon crawl theme.
@@Jeffs40K Yes, Gloomhaven is really a card management system with a little bit of tactics thrown in. I know not everyone likes that. I didn't like Descent 2 because it was just a race rather than a real dungeon crawl. But fortunately, there are a lot of dungeon crawlers now so we have our pick!
@@gaminggeek241 Well Dungeon Universalis has a rules section all about making it work with other game systems. plus the current 2nd printing now includes a separate, basic lighter rules version book that would probably be perfect for using with HQ.
@@sethpeterson8261 Do you know how easily you could translate the maps for the HQ board? EDIT: Actually, I see they have a video on the Kickstarter site using the HeroQuest board so I'm assuming it can be done--it's in Spanish though: th-cam.com/video/OQrnloVDv9k/w-d-xo.html
Yeah, it would have been nice if they provided both the classic rules and had an updated ruleset. I wish instead of extra minions and quests, they had a stretch goal to update the rules or creating an app to run the Game Master.

Our group found the Hammer of Sigmar. Yep, used it during a half of an adventure. On the way to a city, lost it in a random event (hurricane or something, geez we were pissed!).
This is one of those "shut up and take my money!" purchases.
Did not get any download after paying whats going on? need help if you can.....😑
He emails the purchaser with a code or link to get the files. Might be because it was over the weekend. If you don't get anything soon, try emailing him. Tell me if that doesn't work.
This looks so beautifully designed
Trying hard not to necro a post, but what do you use to print out the rulebook? (A printer yourself, and specific paper - or a service of some kind?)
HEROQUEST REVISITED
You can play any of the Heroquest adventures using the Advanced
Heroquest rules. Replace the Heroquest rules for movement
combat and magic with the Advanced Heroquest rules. Use the
Heroquest rules for placing monsters, searching, treasure cards
and so on. Whenever a Hero is directed to lose a Body Point, he
must lose 1 Wound or 1 Fate Point instead. All monsters that are
encountered are assumed to be of the standard type (not Champions
this is from page 46 of the Advanced Heroquest rule book
Looks really solid, like that there is a rule set for no DM! I also like your rest action house rule !
I keep half joking about converting the Heroquest missions into the dungeon saga ruleset and component group. Maybe this weekend I will have to give it a go.
Shouldn't be too difficult to convert since it's just replacing the map tiles with the board.
The DS ruleset is great, simple and quite tactical. Should be simple to plug it into HQ
Then use it as a testing ground for modifications/alternative rules to DS which may appear in later stuff.
how does one download this game and from where my computer seems like it doesnt like the site
What are your thoughts for adapting this to the D&D series of board games? I’m purchasing this anyway but am not ordering HeroQuest.
Thanks so much for supporting Alex! I think that is super cool even though the game isn't for you. You rock!
Cool idea, I like the concept of updated rules for classic games.
@@gaminggeek241 I appreciate it, bro! I'll check it out when I'm not busy in the office. I'll probably add your house rule as well.
@@creepybunny255 No problem!
This game is ready for a Kickstarter! It reminds me of HeroQuest meets dungeon keeper.
I know, it would be awesome to be in a Kickstarter with printed components.
So is this your fav dungeon crawl system or is it just a good replacement for HQ?
It's a good replacement for HQ--simple and easy to learn for beginners but has enough upgrades and options for veterans. I like other crawlers better, like Shadows of Brimstone and am looking forward to Tanares Adventures, Stormsunder, and Oathsworn but those are more complex and I wouldn't necessarily play with children nor beginners.
Doesn't 'Ye Olde Inn' already cover these new rules for Heroquest already!
Nice looking rule set. Looking forward to using them with the Dungeon Saga miniatures.
Grabbing myself a copy of this now. It sounds awesome :)
Sorry if this is a dumb question but does this have to be done on a custom board or can it be done on an original hero quest board?.
You won a digital copy of Dungeon Crawl! Thanks for being a patron too--I'll send Alex your email and you should receive a link to the download. And yes, you can play this on the original HQ board.
I thought Heroquest made a mistake when they didn’t update the rules with the new release... gonna check these out...
TIA. Best
I print the cards on cardstock and then sleeve them, although laminating is a good option too. The rulebook is spiral bound at Office Depot.
Bought this system some years ago but never tried it. Now its the time :)
I had my local Office Depot/Max print it out for me and it was fine. Did you receive a PDF?
@@gaminggeek241 Yes, it is a PDF which is why I was confused. I've never had such an issue before. Thankfully, though, I think I now have a solution: apparently my employer increased the file sizes we can accept from outside emails. So now I can send it to my work email address and print it at the office. Thanks for responding!! :-)
@@oneanotherstudios Great! Glad you found a solution!
Neat set of rules. I'll have to look into what type of board I'll need to play.
Check out my video that is coming out tomorrow--shows you my option.
@@gaminggeek241 Will do thanks.
Looks like a great game to add to my collection! The design looks easy enough for new players... And crunchy enough for us grizzled veterans...
Yes, I can definitely help. Email me at gbummer@gmail.com.
Great set up. Purchased today.
@@gaminggeek241 yeah. Thats for color. Normally I print everything full color at work, but the damn Ronas' got us all working from home.
I can even print 11x17 heavy cardstock there which is how I got printed my oversized Monolith Conan tiles (that Office Depot quoted me several hundred to do... damn)
@@sethpeterson8261 That's awesome you have that as a resource!
How long will it take to receive the email for the download?
Alex is pretty good at sending it within a day. Make sure to check your spam folder if you don't receive it. Also, you can email me if you have issues and I can reach out to Alex directly for you. Look at my channel About section for email.
@@gaminggeek241 OK thank you I purchased it today but it asked for a shipping address and not my email Hope I didn't mess it up I have not received the email yet but will wait it out
@@gaminggeek241 Thank you for your help Im new to all of this I played some board games but think they are over complicated and spend to much time on set up I have the original heroquest but have only played the introduction quest and loved it Saving it for the remake also wanted to do my own dungeons
@@joshbarnhart6714 No problem. Again, if you don't hear from Alex soon, just message me.
Looks brilliant, purchasing.
This looks very cool
I had to double take, I am pretty sure the photo pan is of my copy of the game when I printed it out.
I recently was looking for a new dungeon crawl ruleset. Something in between Dungeon Saga and D&D, and this might be the perfect choice! Looking forward to reuse the classic 'Das schwarze Auge' (Dark Eye) Board Games 😎
Not sure what you mean exactly by inbetween D&D and DS, but I'd say Dungeon Saga is definitely more tactical than Dungeon Crawl
Anyone plays this? is it good coop for a couple? gmless option?
It's a good co-op for a couple and is gmless. Another good option is the new HeroQuest which can be gmless if you use the app.
Bless your heart ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Id love to be able to order the reprint
This is cool. I will definitely be interested in a Kickstarter to support him. Are you going to set this up for him? I know what medical issues are. Had to take another mortgage out to help my kid. Still paying for it but almost done.
I won't be setting up the Kickstarter since I don't have any experience! I'm glad that you are almost out from underneath the weight of medical debt. Hope you child is doing well.
This sounds awesome! I'm glad the Algorithm has sent me to your channel ;) Keep up the great work and thanks for the information.
You won a digital copy of Dungeon Crawl! Can you send me your name and email address?
Purchased and waiting for info to download. Not sure given he is a one man creator that KS would be the best avenue. IMHO, he should move his work to DriveThruRPG and its derivative sites and have Print On Demand Options and then work on making real cards and aids that he could also sell as add-ons. Once he draws a large following and hopefully makes more money then he could go to KS.
Looks awesome!
That looks like a great game. Looking forward to giving it a try
love your youtubes been 3d printing like you nice job
Looks really nice. I was more or less sure that any remake of HeroQuest would HAVE to update the rules. Sad that they didnt even try.
Yeah, it would have been nice if they provided both the classic rules and had an updated ruleset. I wish instead of extra minions and quests, they had a stretch goal to update the rules or creating an app to run the Game Master.
Great Content, really like this system, congrats
This is great, thanks! Bought.
Dilly Dally Doom! Great vid man.
interesting rules set. seems simple and easy enough. I dont like the names of the stats but that is easy enough to over look.
