I love that this video tells it without gatekeeping or with the discourse of what "real Emo" is, because the majority does and i just want to like things lol, one can love Rites of springs and mcr, one can love Cap'n jazz and AFI, all of that is Emo and that is great
yeah tbh i'm more into the idea of calling the 2000s bands pop or mall emo to differentiate from the rest than saying that it isn't at all emo, bc it just ends up sounding antagonistic towards these bands that a lot of people grew up with. so of course you're gonna be called an elitist for that
i always get so excited when ppl talk abt midwest emo , i feel like no one talks abt that type of emo genre enough cause it’s not as hardcore compared to the other genres and tbh it’s just not as well known (this is just me wishing i had more fwends who were into that music too haha) :3 awesome vid !!
It is extremely popular. It's the reason that mainstream rock went on to bite from "emo" because it started getting cool in indie and alt circles. The hardcore style is the least popular with only a smattering of bands throughout the years getting fetishized and idolized (completely antithetical to everything emo hardcore stands for) and the rest of the movement buried and forgotten with no one understanding it's still ongoing and nobody knows the modern emo hardcore bands because they're not involved in the scene. If your friends like mainstreamo style bands like Paramore, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Hawthorne Heights, or The Used just show them that they were influenced by the previous generation of emo bands in Braid, The Get Up Kids, Chamberlain, Texas is the Reason, Boysetsfire, and Ink & Dagger. To me it's pretty easy to see the throughline from Lifetime circa '94 to Saves the Day circa '99 to Fall Out Boy circa '05. And that's just "melodic emo punk"
Probably worth mentioning that the somewhat-less-famous "other" vocalist/guitarist in Fugazi is Guy Picciotto...the vocalist/guitarist from Rites of Spring. Poor Guy; so often neglected... Fugazi's ties to that first wave are pretty serious.
u should include 5th wave emo and post-emo into the next vid. id recommend your arms are my cocoon, hot mulligan, park national, weatherday, ogbert the nerd, and chase plato
My favorite emo band is Senses Fail, for me they've just been the perfect level of heavy(ish) with just the right amount of screaming and harsh vocals. I've gotten to see them live twice and they we're awesome!
Im not emo but i like this emo scenes back in the day. 2003 i discover about emo and band i always listen to is mcr, escape the fate and alesana and also many more bands i forgot to mention 😅
I'd say "pop screamo" is another type that'd be Pierce the Veil, Get Scared, Dance Gavin Dance... ect. Just like MyChem was inspired by Sunny Day Realestate, The Promise Ring, ect., so was Pierce the Veil inspired by that early San Diego screamo scene and early post-hardcore as screamo was. (Though every emo "type" could be described as post-hardcore) Amazing breakdown of the topic tho! :D
@@FVC37ESS Yeah, they've leaned a bit more into Metalcore but Pierce the Veil is also often described as Metalcore-inspired. Nonetheless, the pop-screamo origin is still pretty clear.
Great job. I think not enough people seem to talk about how the sound of the "big four" of "stereotypical emo" like MCR is actually quite similar to / an evolution of early 00s pop punk (think Sk8er Boi), to the point where "emo" and "pop punk" can be used interchangeably towards the mid to late 00s. I find it intriguing how MCR and Paramore are "emo" while pop punk bands like Sum 41, blink-182 and Good Charlotte aren't. Much like nu metal, emo refers to a wide range of music. I actually learned a lot, thanks for this video.
Because those bands are pop punk and not emo, Gerard in the interview she uses here is talking about how MCRs music isn't emo because it's goth pop punk, if anything it's more "emo" in the spirit of doing something artsy&poppy that they know self-proclaimed "true punks" will hate
@@kage6613mcr's first album is definitely emo. and blink 182s self titled album is one of the most legendary 2000s emo albums. sum 41 and good charlotte have emo songs. all those bands came from the punk scene and played with all sorts of other emo bands. mcr was just really into theatrics and marketing. its what helped them reach a mainstream audience. they did such a good job promoting the emo look and lyrical content that it deserves the appeal and praise. you do understand that some music falls into multiple subgenres?
I really thought I knew a lot about emo until I saw this video. I'm learning everyday! U basically said what I've been DYING to say but better. U fuckin get it!!! Also THANK YOU for saying PTV is emo because they've really paved the way as an all POC band in a subculture where a lot of white bands are more popularized. Emo was so great before tiktok now people forget it’s a music genre and only think of it as a look smh. They think you can’t be emo without dressing dark. Just listen to the music man. That’s the most emo thing you can do is when you feel the music and want to drown in those lyrics but now emo is only an aesthetic :(
its interesting to go back and pinpoint the times when a new defining aspect of emo came to, listening to bands like the get up kids you see where the emocore and midwest emo start to combine with the to be emo mainstream, no idea where bands like attack attack started bringing in electronics though its crazy
I seperated emo into 3 catagories Pop punk, Screamo, Alternative/indie And my favorite in each one is The Startingline, A Skylit Drive, Straylight Run Tripple S lol

make a video about the most underrated and unfairly hated genre "melodic hardcore" - thank you. really loved this video! keep making awesome stuff like this i subbed!
Really well researched video and a huge thank you for actually showing that it's not just mcr :') The only thing I missed was the late 90s to 2000s wave of bands with screamo and post-hardcore influences that leaned much more towards metalcore, like Alesana or From First to Last that then evolved into the metalcore branch of it all and resulted in bands like Asking Alexandria and BMTH. To this day a piece of me still dies when people try to talk to me about MCR because I still look like I when I was 14. Not because I dislike them, but because I literally never even listened to them, have never cared about their music and still also do not like their sound which will also probably never change. And to add insult to injury: a lot of us emo kids that were part of the aforementioned scene did absolutely NOT like the emo pop kids and were heavily insulted when you implied you like those bands. This is ofc heavily generalized but I that era is pretty much ignored in most of the discourse around this topic, despite it also being one of the most recent ones.
Orchid mentioned = instant like although I'd probably changed the order of the genres, just to make it more clear how everything started with hardcore (again, lol) and then split into emoviolence/(french) screamo, and then evolved to emocore also, everyone should check Minaret, probably the best screamo band ever

Awesome, I'm gonna have to come back here and check out a bunch of these bands! I'm surprised that Simple Plan wasn't mentioned in the pop emo section, cause they were absolutely inescapable back in the day and even did the theme song for What's New Scooby-Doo, which is my favorite Scooby-Doo theme by far, hahahaha... Good Charlotte were also big, I heard them for the first time when my cousin handed my brother and I a burned CD with their songs right before we went on our July 2007 vacation to the beach, and the whole time I just listened to it on repeat while playing V8 2nd Offense and Burnout Revenge. Good times!

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
