Mariah Carey's Live Vocal Range Of Butterfly Era (B♭2 - E♭7) [UPDATED]

- As y'all know, this idea was my first video on my channel. And since it was the first video, I definitely didn't have much experience in editing/distinguishing notes... So it was kinda flawed...
After half a year of making videos, I decided to update this video! And here is it!!! So, what are the improvements/differences here?
1. I used Mariah's font!
2. Less wrong notes!
3. New rare notes! (She has 3 E♭7's, just saying xD)
4. No lip-synced notes!
5. The video's quality looks better as I added some color adjustments!
6. I included a lot of E5's in Make It Happen to show people that this era wasn't really her vocal decline! She still had the vocal of Daydream Era (of course with less ease!)

Ah, the Butterfly era. The time where her voice matured. Where the smooth, velvety timbre of the Daydream era turned into a more mature, creamier tone(a little raspy too).
She shines in this era. One of her best.
Love the rasp and husk in her voice this era and yet how agile her voice remained. Those Butterfly belts 😍😍😍😍 Her Australia vocals were amazing. Love those Honey Eb5s but her Make it Happen Slaychelle in Syndey is everything 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 those ,easy E5s and that F#5

+Qanh Musicz butterfly era is a lot better vocally than rainbow era in my opinion cause rainbow era was really inconsistent that's why I like Butterfly era it's like she has the beautiful tone of rainbow with consistency
True, especially when she had to suffer a lot of pressure during Rainbow era, which made her voice very tired and rough/raspy and led to inconsistency!
+Qanh Musicz tragic really 😭it's what led to her worst vocal year (2000) and her tone was really nice I wonder if she would have sang Bliss live if she was in perfect vocal condition ....
I must say, I absolutely *LOVE* that F5 in "Hero"; it comes out of nowhere and takes you by surprise and it proves that she is a beast in the upper belt; even outside of her prime!
Butterfly is her prime imo.
Higor Gabriel i think technically yes , but if we would consider her vocal condition , then her prime wuld have certainly ended in 1996
i think if vocal ability is considered i personally believe her prime is '90-'04 (butterfly had struggle & rasp but she still could slay daydream style)
@@touka7317 the only difference between Daydream and Butterfly is her tessitura lowered , the range is the same and the ease she lost above F5 she gained it in the lows . Butterfly is wayyy more agile than daydream and she gained rasp ! Butterfly is basically a raspy mature version of daydream so still her prime
My favorite era vocally. Vocal agility and stamina of the daydream era but raspiness of the rainbow era.
i'm happy to see his video because butterfly's my fave album and era! and i know her live vocals weren't like totally amazing during this era, but this proves that they were still pretty good. like, the F5 in vision of love at 13:25 really shocked me bc it sounded really good! but anyways, love the video and LOVE the editing!

And I really love that F5, don't know why... Maybe it was just so surprisingly strong/powerful, comparing to her vocal at that time!

Qanh Musicz right? it doesn't have that nasal quality that her f5 belts from her debut era had, and imo was more resonant. i might just be thinking this way since i'm so surprised + could be wrong, but idk!
and also, i agree. butterfly era was obviously a downgrade from the daydream era, but it really wasn't until like 1998 when her voice actually really deteriorated (but then it regained quality in 2001). like, imo 1997 was a good year for her voice, and 1998-2000 was really her only deterioration period
+daydream I was thinking the same too! It has far more resonance than her debut era's upper belts! And I saw a lot of people said her mixing during Butterfly era was much better than her prime too! xD
daydream yeah I kinda agree. Butterfly was a raspier version on daydream. Her vocals for me started to "deteriorate" around 1999-2000 not 98 because although her rasp was a bit more noticeable, she still belted all the "crazy notes" and stuff like Agility,range and riffs/runs were still there just less ease.
Her tone was so nice in Butterfly era....

@@sonilika9555 for the Dreamlover intro whistle it was live. Some of them (the professionally filmed one) are dubbed with the studio version like MSG professionally released concert (the dubbed one). While the other aren't.

All era's she is the Best for me (i like other artists too) But Mariah will always be #1 to my picky taste lol.
Her tone is soo much darker and less bright and nasal.
I always thought that in 1997 that's when her lower register and upper belts began to rasp. but I was proven wrong! MC you go girl!
her belts were sometimes raspy even in her prime, it was just that rasp was a rarer occasion in previous years
Mariah Carey Fan I just listened to it and it's kind of hard to tell. I will say this, her voice is flawless during the rest of the performance (the resonance in her belts were astounding and her head voice soared!); it wouldn't be too shocking if she did. After all, she did touch G5 in "Make It Happen" at Sydney in 1998.

Epictemptation7 At first, I was like, she played Daydream Interlude during interval in order to have time to rest/change clothes so the whistle should be the studio version too. But after listening to those whistles, I have to say they are really live! XD
maybe she finished changing earlier that day & decided to give us some of that sweet live whistle

Qanh Musicz Yeah I know. But she does that to make it sound live (just like the Through The Rain performance in the Shining Through The Rain special, or like the WBT performances). Just increase the key by one and you'll hear they're exactly like the original recording. Trust me I'm good at these stuff unfortunately :p Btw the E5 also sounds lipped too :/

Xtina & Mimi Will you quit trying it? There were no lipped notes in this video. She never lipped "One Sweet Day" until the new millennium (except for promo performances in 1995 and 1996); other than that, all of her '90s performances of "One Sweet Day" are completely live. Not everything is lipped to studio vocals transposed down one key. This is really starting to get on my nerves. You tried that with "We Belong Together", but you've since taken that video down. I wonder why? Hmm...

Her voice here is so beautiful I don’t care who disagrees, her rich and raspy low notes like honey, her raspy but light bright belts, smooth head voice/falsetto, and soft and raspy whistle register. I love her butterfly album and era. This era introduced me to Mariah Carey as I was 2 when her butterfly album was released and my mom had this album

Podemos ver que o único problema que Mariah tinha nessa Era era a rouquidão na voz, o que atrapalhava a fazer os belts médios e altos (diria de B4-F#5), mas mesmo assim ela não perdeu o suporte dela até F#5, manteve a garganta aberta em vários momentos e ainda assim foi uma das melhores era dela vocalmente falando

So technically her range is E3 (those other notes are not as pronounced as the E3) and it goes to a Eb7. 4.1 octaves.
the notes Eb3 & below do count, she did hit them & they do count. also 4.1 would be D3-Eb7
Ohh how i love her confidence in this era despite vocal condition, honestly her voice sounds like super expensive because of the rasp.
I think Mariah don't use mixed voice and that's what makes it hard for her sustain her 5th octave upper belts. I'm just wondering why you put mixed voice 💁🏼♂️

D6 is headvoice
no, you would hear a transition if it was hv. it's a low whistle. 18:44/18:45 the D6 has the same airy quality as the rest of the whistle. hv would be less airy, more full-bodied/have a thicker quality.
You cannot go from whistle to head voice like that without break

I don't think this is the best era though, her voice was really deteriorated (the worst state of her voice even worse than the 2010's). I think the best eras are the Music Box and Daydream Era since they featured the best vocals and further improvement of technique after the Debut and Emotions Era, since those two aren't bad but her belts are quite pulled and not as supported, but the best part of those two are her transitions from her chest register to her whistle tones. But I also loved the Glitter, Charmbracelet, and The Emancipation of Mimi Era, since she recovered in 2001 her rasp stayed but her high notes are clearer than what it was in the late 90's
Her pre babies voice was worst in Rainbow and E=MC2 Eras, Butterfly was just raspy and inconsistent, but she still delivered a lot of prime vocals.

@@thebestcicinmage4485 going back to my opinion from 2 years ago for the rest that will read the replies in the future, yeah, Butterfly was not the worst, though, it was a unique case. Butterfly was pretty inconsistent as said by @ocandro as she was sick during the tour and had some issues in some times during '98 but had pretty great vocals throughout 1997-1998.
With one of my comments suggesting that Butterfly was worse than the 2010's, that isn't necessarily true. 2010's had a lot of stamina but still doesn't compare to Butterfly in terms of overall vocals.
Another relevant thing I wanna add is that I now think that Music Box is better technique-wise than Daydream as Music Box had better overall support, vibrato, and resonance. Daydream featured really difficult vocals (MSG really carried the era) but was often pitchy in some occassions and was a little too nasal in others. So I conclude that Music Box *is* her best era.
As for everything else, I have nothing I want to change apart from the punctations, formatting, and just separating the statement into 2-3 paragraphs cause that A LOT.
