- Steiner and Beatrix team up to defend Alexandria!
Check out the narrated version here:

I made this because I thought that maybe some people could appreciate this scene without my commentary. Enjoy!
Best date ever
This one, and also in mgs4 when Johnny was proposing to Meryl.
I would go as far to say...The best scene in a fantasy game. Ever.
Damn right it is!
Steiner going in trance after he was gonna say I love you. Man.
Arguably. Certainly my favorite. Steiner is so underrated as a character and one of the objective best in videogame history. He also is the undisputed best party member to have especially when I played the first time casually without knowing all the game breaking moves/tricks
YOU HAVE MY VOTE GOOD SIR!
"For the Queen, for Alexandria.... and for you, Beatrix" Adelbert Steiner.
Everyone is (rightfully) talking about how awesome Steiner is here, but let's remember what an awesome moment it is, after getting party wiped by her three times on previous discs, to play as Beatrix.
Exactly, best part of this moment
Ever notice how those monsters give a truckload of exp and this scene is basically just a way to catch Steiner up to the rest of the party after being absent for a long time?
Steiner and Beatrix are suppose to represents different extremes of knighthood - with Steiners is focused on self-perception whilst Beatrix is focused on the perception of others.
Beatrix represents ‘Loyalty’ but to a blind degree, turning a blind eye (notice that her character design literally has her covering one eye) to the atrocities being committed by her charge.
Once Beatrix recognised her blind loyalty, she redeemed hereelf by reviving Garnet (which is ironic because it was Steiners job to protect her)
Steiner represents Chilvalry - but imposes these standards so hard on himself that he becomes untrusting, constantly puts himself in danger for little reward and ends up being disliked and accused of being pretentious as a result.
Once Steiner recognised that Chivalry comes in many forms (e.g Despite Zidane’s underhandedness, he knows that Zidane uses his abilities to help Garnet) he too becomes a better person.
Steiner is one of the best FF characters ever because he bas actual personality and growth. Plus he is a noble knight who saves the world and has bested Beatrix in the past! Steiner is so underrated!
Wait a sec. When did steiner best beatrix?
@@Leon5495 At age 23. It's how he joined the Knights of Pluto.
I consider him to be a part of my Bro Squad alongside Barret and Balthier. 😅
@@Azulicious However it was stated that he won due to sheer luck.
yep they development him really good on the full story.
i always loved this part steiner suddenly goes into trance and i still love playing this game
My favorite part of the game. Steiner and Beatrix together just owns all.
"ill protect you beatrix!" (goes trance)
*beatrix uses SHOCK* monster dead
steiner: ...... -__- ugh
its ok stainer its ok you still cool in my eyes
steiner is a monster in this game. it's a shame you're capped at 9999dmg because he would be hitting crits in 30-40k range
Geez. This still gives me goosebumps @2021
After this many years, I've yet to find a videogame with a character (specially a secondary character) undergoing as AMAZING a growth as Steiner (although Lightning/Hope are clos-ish). THIS is quality story telling, people.
And Beatrix, despite her story not being as detail-filled as I'd have liked, was still an amazing support. Best FF yet (story-wise, at least), and TOP5 RPG for sure.
This was so adorable. The song really sells it too. Steiner is probably my favorite person in that game. He is such a joke nearly all the time. Those Trance criticals ain't too funny though, huh?
And despite being such a joke, he still undergoes the biggest growth of all characters in this game, in basically in any FF, and in most RPGs. AMAZING character.
he is just a joke..but when goes trance..9999 DAMN!! he becomes just nightmare fuel for monsters.. nice development on him on the story really.
My favorite part of ff9. Just imagine the impact it would’ve added if this was the first time we see Steiner be able to go into Trance.
Story line wise, this isn’t too far into the game. And Steiner isn’t playable for a large portion before this event anyways.
They really should have locked Trance until these events. Like Vivi getting it on the cargo ship, etc.
Single-handedly one of my favorite moments in any RPG, ever. The music, the stakes, Steiner's conviction to Alexandria and Beatrix...flawless.
Fun Fact: At 9:10 the following battle has Steiner coded to automatically Trance regardless of his bar before. Running high off the admission of his love for Beatrix.
I always loved how beastly Steiner looked when he went into Trance.
i got the chills about 9 times. fantastic.
best scene in the game and one of the most remarkable scenes in the Final Fantasy saga.
Oh and call Steiner's trance boring but damn his physical attack power during trance is insane
yep..he becomes 2k per hit..to 8k lol
best scene in the game? so many to pick
a video game never gave me chills like steiner and beatrix teaming up
ngl as he was flipping through accessories and got to 2 strength up even I was like 'nah there's one better'
What a freakin awesome game!!!!!!
Goddamn if this isn't my favorite scene in the entire FF franchise.
Considering the dialogue isn't even voiced this is incredible
"we'll live to see another day"
This was my first Final Fantasy game back in the day but what a masterpiece. The music, the gameplay, the theme, the story, and etc still gives me fucking chills..
My favorite scene from Final Fantasy IX! Thanks for uploading!
The AI of these mobs are on point. Put Beatrix to sleep to avoid her devastating Shock attack.
your Steiner is kickin' ass! when I played this it was basically a Beatrix escort quest
I always had him in my party so mine was a little above Beato. I like the idea of a game world where there are characters about as strong as your party who AREN'T enemies. Wish there were more of them. Would make a more interesting plot.
One of my favorite scenes
Love the rock remake to this song-epic scene for sure. Wish they’d remake it!
OMG!! This Is One Of The Best Parts Of The Game!!!!! I LOVE IT!! I mean.. Steiner Likes Beatrix and then they make a team!! and finally U Can take the control of one of the powerful character of the game!! Beatriix!!! =) aaa Plus the Beautiful Song of Protecting My Devotion and very close the best FMV's Of The Game xDDD.. Thank for posting this, I missed the dialogs and wanted to see if steiner was banging beatrix.
Steiner is so awesome,,,,
Man that MP attack with Steiner. Fuck shit up
Fav part of the game.
In italiano il linguaggio rinascimentale che hanno dato a steiner rende tutto più epico
Una delle traduzioni videoludiche meglio riuscite in assoluto!
E gli attacchi in latino…
Good thing ff9 is not a tragic ff where they both died protecting alexandria. Hmm how about that take
THIS IS MY OTP
I like how your steiner just one shots all the trash mobs even though you have Beatrix xD.
Who's cutting onions beginning at 7:56 😭
In one of my many playthroughs in this game, I renamed Steiner as Rusty . Rly fits his overall look i think ;)
Rusty!? How dare- You're nothing but a thief!
takes me back.. ah
I dunno but, i find this video, sweeet. . :)
The OG "Rose Tyler, I..."
oh how i wish i still owned my ps1 and this game. sigh.. I miss it so much!! T-T
If you survived this long welcome to the age of emulation
the damage limit and lack of multi hit stagnated the late game
What is the music at 1:15 ?
I wish i can use Beatrix until the end of game
Games like this age well with time. Anyone who has a Steam Deck and is tired of modern gaming, owe it to themselves to play one of the more feature-rich FF games before FF10 changed the franchise series' direction toward a higher production. Modern games nowadays use a lot of exposition to show the player what to do and how to feel. Older games didn't have these production values and so rely on great storytelling to convey the ideas through mostly text dialogue and music. For those that never played....(light spoilers)
There is a lot of context here from the 2+ disks to understand Steiner and Beatrix' subtext. Throughout the initial journey, Steiner was incredibly apprehensive to Zidane and the idea of going along with Princess Garnet(Dagger)' at the time. But events unfold and we learn that there's far more at play that led to unforeseen forces guiding his country of Alexandria down a doomed path for someone else' grand design (i.e. Kuja). Beatrix, being General of the guards doesn't see it the same way as Steiner (being Captain), and the two clash throughout the journey on opposite sides, sometimes to the point of endangering Garnet, the princess of Alexandria out of loyalty to the kingdom. The game makes it very clear that Beatrix is superior to Steiner and canonically, always beats the party in battle. It was only when the plot takes a turn for the worse, when Kuja finally makes his move that Beatrix learns far too late her own mistake and the city comes under siege.
What makes this scene powerful, in a time without voiced dialogue and on the eye of fancy FMV cutscenes is the player' ability to follow the well-crafted storytelling that lets us believe the character growth. We see Steiner grow with the party, evolving past his own bias' as the comic relief but loyal soldier, to more of an ideal of what loyalty is, having the ability to change his own mind regarding his own company. It leads to his own character arc since the start of the story as we see Steiner travel with the player. Because he is portrayed as inept, headstrong and arrogant, it's the context of his character as a fiercely loyal soldier of Alexandria, that creates a very powerful scene, where Beatrix becomes a temporary playable character, yet it is Steiner that is showing how far he has developed as a character. It's not that he has changed as a person in his duty as a soldier, it is that Steiner never forgot himself as a person and his determination, whether through ignorance or conviction, struggled forward to continue adapting to what he believes is loyalty. The game uses the Trance mechanic to showcase his growth, and of-course the player themselves demonstrating their understanding of the game mechanics to prep Steiner for a wave defense section where Steiner grew into person that can actually battle Beatrix and stand a chance, 2+ disks later.
Players understand before, that Steiner using Sword Arts the way he can in this scene, was usually only possible with the assistance of Vivi (another player character). So the fact Steiner can do it without Vivi during this scene is extremely powerful messaging, backed by the music score and circumstances. It shows to convince the player that Steiner is peak alpha right now, and as we empathize a lot with Steiner' words, desires and feelings throughout this journey to defend Alexandria from the siege. This fool Captain of the Knights of Pluto is growing up to become a fierce rival to General Beatrix (an unwinnable boss) in both combat, and much much more.
That would be fine.
I went soft, in this part I left the Steiner very weak, I gave all the work to Beatrix
So you fight Beatrix and she has thousands in health u get to play as Beatrix Beatrix she has 800 ...fantastic game but that bit does my head in
It’s funny as an ally the shock animation isn’t as cool
Check the description! I made a Let's Play Final Fantasy IX Part 71. :)
one of the best parts of the game yea great review and i dont think u talked why didnt u
@VelvetNightmare690 I'd swap Quina and Amarant for Blank and Beatrix, giving Blank Amarant's techniques.

Read the description, please!
Eh, Steiner gets even much Stronger than Beatrix later
ummm i remember that part,,.
beatrix must be a way stronger than steiner isnt?XD
@anmaree Yea I agree. Beatrix was the best Holy Knight (= to Agrias) in all final fantasy
damage caps suck, just let the players go wild if they want to like legend of legaia
3:25
I really hate steiner as fuck...but when this scene happens..i just erase all my words about him and eat them. He is a cool character..EVEN ON THE STORY..u can see his development..he was a full guard on duty..then he sees the truth and wanna stay with HIS QUEEN..."dagger"
8:50
lol the one time i dont read it lol :/
Id replace Freya, Quina, and Steiner for Beatrix in a Heart Beat! Why doesn't she join the team!!!??
