Thought the same thing. Too many tech bloggers and tech TH-camrs never take that into account. They don’t even realize (anymore) how the actual target audience of a product would see it.
I agree. He's right. Key points are that it's more than powerful enough for casual users paired with a form factor and screen quality cannot be matched at that price. It's friendly, cute, fun computer that would look great in a normies living room.
The one thing that seems like it’s not a matter of opinion though is that Apple will have a harder time transitioning to a thicker device than a thin one. If they want to make a thicker, “better” iMac later, they’ll have to get around the perception of a step backwards.
@@IanSmithKSP don‘t think so. Many High end and professional products are more beefy which suggests that there is more to it. High end cars are wider, have wider tyres.. etc. Of course it has to be combined with good design, but it beeing more beefy does not mean it‘s perception will be bad.
This is a big problem I see with TH-cam reviews, particularly for laptops and desktops. Most look at performance through one thing - video editing, which most consumers are unlikely to do at a professional level. You have to consider the target demographic the product is aimed at, rather than trying out the same thing on every product.
I really like iMac’s, they’re very user friendly for family rooms. The chin doesn’t bother me because it’s part of the aesthetic. And the white bezels are nice to help blend in with most interior designs. I get how it can be a hit or miss with some people though. I think it’s a typical Apple move in terms of design and their target market.
I don't see how the white bezel blends in with most interior designs when it's surrounding a 24inch black screen. When the iMac is off I feel like it stands out much more in most environments
@@rhysowen9566 it blends in because white matches with everything. Same way black pieces of clothing can be mix and matched with any other color. It’s about the versatility. Actual shades of color are harder to match in interior spaces unless you’re going for a colorful look. I mean no matter what, a monitor or tv usually has a bezel or even a thin chin. The iMacs look isn’t for everyone. But I think many people can agree that the white bezels add a minimalistic and clean look to the screen while giving people a place to touch if they need to adjust or move the computer around.
@@seRAEtonin my point was the screen is still black when it is turned off, and when it is turned off I've found it catches the eye more in most living environments because that large black surface is now in a glossy white frame. @@rhysowen9566 at the end of the day if it’s not your aesthetic, nobody is forcing you to buy the iMac. If you prefer an all black monitor without white bezels because it’s less eye catching then buy a monitor and the Mac mini or tower to go with it, or get a windows computer system with whatever monitor blends better in your opinion. For me personally, as I mentioned, I feel that the white bezels look nice and help it blend in bright open spaces. Will it stick out in dark small rooms? Of course. But again, very dependent on user preference. If you’re criticizing Apple’s marketing of their desktops, well all I can say is that it works and is appealing, whether we agree with it or not. The reason I love your channel is that you understand and admit that something is just not for you and it doesn't have to make you personally happy. So many people just rage about things that aren't designed for them. As a professional filmmaker I also understand that this isn't made for me, but I can totally see my parents using one, college campuses having these and just computers for those working with documents and responding to emails. I think this is a perfect device to be on the counter of a salon or a coffee shop, where you get to see it from both sides. Waiting for that "pro" model, that would definitely be something I splurge on.
Agreed. So many other reviewers hate on a product just because they personally do not like it, and then proceed to try to make the rest of us feel like Neanderthals for daring to like it. This review is a perfect example of how to state your bias in an argument and still remain objective. Actually makes me want to consider why HE prefers his differently, since I know he considered what I might think.
I actually love that they have the chin. Both visually and practically. I often have to kinda rotate the computer to access the usb ports in the back and also need some support when sticking stuff in to those ports(I change the stuff there quite often because I do photography). The chin gives you a safe place to touch the front side of hhe screen without leaving fingerprints to the glass.
He just goes that hard in the review. 4-6 days means a few hours of use for most people. Marques probably wakes up next to it and has a meaningful relationship with it.
The thickness of the monitor is the least measurement that a human would notice. Unless if you're trying to impress someone else who's visiting your house and is looking at the computer from the side (which makes sense considering Apple's target audience)
IMPORTANT MESSAGE :D Jesus is the only way to heaven 1) ADMIT THAT YOU’RE A SINNER: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) No one is good enough to go to Heaven on his own merit. No matter how much good we do, we still come short. 2) REALIZE THE PENALTY FOR SIN: "For the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 3:23) The penalty for our sin is eternal death in a place called Hell. But there is good news, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins, that whoever believes in Jesus should not perish but have everlasting life. ( see John 3:16) 3) BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED, AND THAT GOD RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD: 4) CALL UPON THE NAME OF JESUS & REPENT: Trust in Jesus alone as your Savior. Jesus loves you and He's waiting for you with his arms wide open. Trust in Jesus and repent (which means to confess and forsake your sins

Very nice video! I go like the different design/new aesthetic approach. I feel like this piece of tech could seamlessly find a spot in my room, instead of being a bulky, dark grey piece of equipment. That's something new for me. I'm considering this piece also because of its size. As a STEM student needing as much space as possible on my desk, the thinness helps a lot.
The colors are friendly. In other words, it appeals to people that aren't particularly tech-heads and would want it to more seamlessly fit in with their home decor.
I have the blue iMAC entry level model. I love it. The monitor , sound , mic, camera are excellent. The machine is fast....I mean really fast. The thin design with the white bezel looks awesome. I honestly think that the only reason people complain about the white bezel is because the black bezel is all they have ever seen on everything....especially if they are under about 30 years of age (which many tech reviewers are). I only need the two ports. However, I added the SATECHI clamp style USB hub, which also colour matched the iMAC and gave me several USB ports and two SD card slots which means that maybe I do actually need more ports LOL. The ports also allow external storage. The chin is also a cool design element in that it shows the pastel colour of your machine and is a place for the sound....it's almost like a sound bar.
You’re right about it not being for your demographic. When it came out the first thing I did was tell my sister who has kids learning from home to get one, and my mom who works remotely who has the older one. I’m personally waiting for that MacBook Pro 16” M1

Thinking about monitors out there covered in sticky notes makes me uncomfortable. I'm even bothered by the sticky notes in macOS (that app that's still around from way back when) and those are only virtual.
My first job out of college was at a photography studio (I learned that I hate school photography that summer/fall, lol), and we had sticky notes all over the chins of the iMacs we used. 😂
imo at this point the chin has to be a conscious design choice. i imagine having the display extend into the chin would not be ergonomic (screen needs to be a certain height so head isn't pointing down), and removing the chin would make the design non-aesthetic because of the pencil-neck stand
You know that table was a rental for this video. The subtle details of the colors, the all white walls and bookshelf with a baby blue instax mini on it. Real quality Marques 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Brainwashed by Apple. Theres no such thing as for white wall. Lol gimic af. They can put it in black, but decide not to, in order to make more product. Pro version will have black bezel. Already know your game, Apple.
Absolutely!! And professional businesses are not going to spring for these…they belong in art studios, schools, teen bedrooms etc My take is they plan to launch a space grey bezel and chin…however it will be the 27 inch variant with the M1 X and they will charge a significant premium. Let’s remembered, Apple knows and needs to capitalize
I actually like that the old iMac tapered off towards the top. It was unique, visually stunning and like you said - no one cares how thick it is when its on your desk.
Agreed but I think Apple wanted something totally new with this. Sticking with the taper would've been too familiar to the last gen - even with all other changes. They also seem to be leaning into "all-flat" designs lately; starting with iPad Pro in '18, iPhone 12 last year, new iMac, and based on leaks - new MacBooks coming soon.
The glass displays kill it for me more than the white bezels. I had the first Intel iMac that still had the white plastic case and the bezels didn't bother me at all (and they were huge in comparison to this thing), but it also had a nice matte display.
Only if you look at it directly from the front. The moment you move even a degree in another direction, you’ll see the colored metal edge of the monitor lol.
Let me just say that the shot composure, the bg elements, the colors, the music and the editing is just breath taking. Mkbhd remains unparalleled. Coming from someone who values good design, aesthetics and art

Hi Marquee, I have just found this video and really liked your presentation. I fully agree about the fact the thickness of the computer is completely irrelevant as ,say, a 20 - 25 mm thick computer could have accommodated the headphone Jack and a couple of USB-A ports. I also think that the stand would have looked better if they had used the same curved design as the 21.5 inch iMac. Keep up the good work.
CMON! Filming, edits, and all!! Goodness. It's appreciated Marques, all those little things (from the props, to the beat drop cuts, etc.) are appreciated!
Why does it matter? It gets charged once every few months. Nobody uses a computer 24/7/365. Plug it in when done for a day or taking a break. It’ll be good for months within a lunch break of charging.
Great review. I think the design really grows on you. The back is beautiful and really should be on display, especially the teal colour on the green model.

Try one, it might surprise you.
I love how symmetrical every shot is, how every MKBHD video's colours match the design language of the Product being reviewed, especially visible here. And honestly that wallpaper be doing the iMac some proper justice. Your videos are smooth as butter and a solace to my eyes!
I've always associated Apple with premium looking designs so to see them come out with something like this, let's just say I have an error in my brain whenever I look at it. I think it would've looked better if they kept the Apple logo in the middle on the front, at least keeping the bezel was a good choice though.
Fantastic review! I really appreciate the level of detail and the hands-on/practical explanations. I disagree with the chin/bezel colour part -- but that's only because I am so nostalgic for the 90's iMac designs :)

As someone who worked repairing macs: the power supply is the #1 repair. I love that the power supply is now external, the computer will last much longer!
Good to know. I guess as annoying as the lack of ports is, that's probably another aspect that benefits by having most connected externally, assuming the few that are on the computer don't fail on you.
@@MaZEEZaM 4 ports is more than enough for this Mac entry level case. You got a second monitor , and external storage array (if you need one ) a front port solution with SD card reader and you are good. Notice that the thunderbolt ports support daisy chaining so each port could support 6 external devices. I will not buy this machine because of the monitor size and he graphics performance an the little RAM. The weakness is gigabit Ethernet for a NAS but then again this machine is not designed for people that needs high performance NAS connectivity
I agree with the premise that Apple compromised functionality at the altar of thinness. It makes no sense to me. In the 13 years I’d sold computers (I’m out of the game for good), not a single customer ever asked me for the thinnest desktop available, but Apple can’t seem to help themselves. And look at the functionality lost or externalized for that thinness, and the utterly unnecessary engineering problems they had to solve, as a result.
Indeed...it's a desktop, you're not putting this in your pockets. I'd rather they go thicker, get rid of the chin, and go with more ports and a larger screen.
The thing with Apple is that they don't sell what they think you want, but they sell what they think you will want. And considering they are the company with the highest market value I'd say they are doing something right.
There's a certain logic to what you're saying, but popularity doesn't always equal quality, and let's face it, the Mac desktop lineup has -very- little to do with Apple's current market value. Their success is spawned more by iPhone and services revenue than anything else.

Hi Nikita! I truly agree with you on this. I'm curious - what computer do you use as a professional filmmaker?
I actually love that they have the chin. Both visually and practically. I often have to kinda rotate the computer to access the usb ports in the back and also need some support when sticking stuff in to those ports(I change the stuff there quite often because I do photography). The chin gives you a safe place to touch the front side of hhe screen without leaving fingerprints to the glass.

Jesus is the only way to heaven
1) ADMIT THAT YOU’RE A SINNER: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) No one is good enough to go to Heaven on his own merit.
( see John 3:16)
3) BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED, AND THAT GOD RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD:
4) CALL UPON THE NAME OF JESUS & REPENT: Trust in Jesus alone as your Savior.

As a STEM student needing as much space as possible on my desk, the thinness helps a lot.

the color choice is basically a future nostalgia
The chin is also a cool design element in that it shows the pastel colour of your machine and is a place for the sound....it's almost like a sound bar.
it's fast? i'm shocked

The chin's always been so good for sticky notes though
I know! I love sticking Post its to the chin! Fits perfectly!
🙄 So has the Sticky Note App built into the computer that you are placing sticky notes on.

I have just found this video and really liked your presentation.
You reviews are some of the most professional ones on TH-cam.
