SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE WAY TO RESTORE A RUSTY EXHAUST PIPE

  • We picked up this pipe from a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo parts car that was covered in rust and seemed unusable. Afterwards we gave it some thought and decided to give it a simple restoration. After it is all said and done this job took a couple of hours but the final product was worth every bit.
Here is a little backstory and also some motivation to make your things look better when trying to sell them online.
We actually had no use for this specific cat delete pipe, so initially we just listed it on eBay and thought we could get rid of it easily. That was not the case, we received no messages for several weeks. We thought maybe it is just of no value to anybody, but my son had a great idea to give it a simple restoration (remove the rust and give it a new coat of paint). Turns out after we completed the restoration and listed it for sale, we received numerous messages within that same day. Just proves how looks can be deceiving. Moral of the story, make things look nice and people will pay for them. 

Nice informative video… Just a few suggestions I have would be to use a hard flat sanding block or a belt sander to make the surface of the flange flat. After you wire wheel the surface, hand blocking it will reveal all the imperfections you just did to the surface. You probably wont wire wheel as gasket surface ever again… and if you want the paint to last longer, you have to clean it with degreaser and let it dry. Then heat up the pipe with a blow torch before you spray it with the high temp paint. You can also use a heat gun to speed up the drying process. Always do more than one coat on exhaust. Just one will burn off in no time. You’ll notice a huge difference over time by doing these things.

Thanks for all the great information and tips. We will keep these in mind on the next exhaust pipe we clean up for high temp paint.
We have started playing around with some Ceramic Exhaust Coatings, so those might hold up better in the long run versus high temp paint. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

I know exactly what you mean, hehe. I find myself squinting or looking away when watching welding stuff. I think it's our brain trying to protect us 😁.
The good news is cameras don't pick up the UV light that is the damaging part. So you can stare away and enjoy the show.

The only think I would do differently is not use vinyl gloves while wire wheeling. If you accidentally contact the wheel it will grab that glove with no mercy. Thanks for the video. You did a good job.

Thanks for the comments, we have switched to leather gloves when working with the wire wheel. We are so used to wearing the latex/vinyl gloves with all of our other projects, we forget to swap them out when working with the bench grinder.

Hey Charlie, thanks for the question. We are currently working on restoring a 1981 Yamaha YZ60, my childhood bike. We will be using Cerakote for a number of the parts including the exhaust pipe since it came from the factory painted black.
There is really no way to just leave "bare" metal without coating it with something. Scotch-Brite pads and WD-40 work great at getting the pipe back to a factory look. You could also spend time polishing it out but I'm not sure of the look you are going for. Afterwards, I would use this to keep it looking good and stay protected. It's not specifically designed for the exhaust application but I know guys who use it on theirs. www.inoxmx.com/products/mx4-lanox-lanolin-lubricant/
I haven't personally tried the VHT Clear exhaust coating but it claims to withstand high temps. It is technically designed to go on as a top coat after you have already primed and painted the pipe.
      www.vhtpaint.com/high-heat/vht-flameproof-coating
Another high-temp clear paint option -www.helixracingproducts.com/clear-high-temp-exhaust-paint
If you are looking at the Cerakote option, I would recommend the V Series - Oven Cure Cerakote for the exhaust application. Depending on the color it can withstand up to 1800F.
      www.cerakote.com/shop
They used to have a chrome option but it's not showing up on their website so it may have been discontinued - www.cerakote.com/project-gallery/52349/cerakoted-w-400-cerakote-glacier-chrome
Here's a good page that compares Cerakote to other coating technologies- www.cerakote.com/cerakote-vs-other-coatings
The most important part of this will be the exhaust pipe preparation. It will be key to get it perfectly clean in order to have the best results. Check out our blast cabinet video for some ideas on blasting metal parts perfectly clean - th-cam.com/video/BiuGZusZYts/w-d-xo.html

@@BradleysGarage Ya know reading my comment back I was totally just in my typical morning mood and came across really "negative youtube comment guy" on ya. While it's arrogant to assume I rocked your world with a shitty youtube comment (so to speak) I should think more before I post stuff, and I apologise dude. Seeing the work done is always good, especially for people new to this sort of stuff, and the harsh reality of youtube is that if you summed the whole video up into 20 seconds at the beginning your average view time would be 20 second:D

My exhaust is rusted inside any tip ??

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey Pain, thanks for the question. The best rust remover out there is Muriatic Acid but keep in mind it is toxic so you have to use with caution. I would suggest getting a rubber plug for each end of the pipe and then pouring in a couple cups of acid. Then you can safely slosh the pipe back and forth to rinse the inside of the pipe.
Have a 5 gallon bucket handy so you can dump the used acid into. I would perform this step a couple times until you got the rusty colored acid to look clearer.
If you want a less corrosive approach, then Krud Kutter - The Must for Rust is an option. It does a decent job of removing rust and it also inhibits rust on the treated surface for up to a year. I would use the same technique by pouring in a couple cups and then sloshing the pipe back and forth. This will be a little more cost per ounce than the Acid so you will have to keep that in mind depending on how rusty the inside of the pipe is.
Muriatic Acid (Typical sold in (2) Gallon pack) - You can get this at a local pool store or at Home Depot / Lowes
