    I remember reading that the course is specifically designed to make the race competitive. Had the race been more flat it would favour the horses, had it been even more hilly it would have favoured the humans.

      +Gustav Svärd Also, the distance is about the right balance between the horses' speed and the humans' endurance. If it was longer than about 30 miles, the humans would win every time.

      +Condor Boss So then, it would be unfair. Well, actually, now that you think about it their was an 80 mile race for horses, and they loped, cantered, and trotted. I'm pretty sure a horse could still win if it were longer, because horses were actually made for working, which includes endurance and stamina, especially with their powerful limbs they have, that were especially made for full on speed and working.

    • @aquila4460
      @aquila4460 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      But go for 100, 200, 400 miles and humans start winning. Yes, horses have endurance and stamina, but humans have more. The only animal to my knowledge, that has more stamina is a certain dog breed.

    • @kevinkevin5973
      @kevinkevin5973 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yea full speed. You cant go full speed for 80 miles, you cant go fast at all for 80 miles. And no matter what, a horse wouldnt be able to go fast at all for 80 miles because it woudlnt have teh energy. Humans would. It prob woudl just walk slowly after a while whereas humasn coudl go on

      @@miaha.4433 Not a chance. It would be impossible for a horse to keep up with a human on ultra marathon distances. The horse would die of exhaustion if it pushed to keep the same pace.

    This human vs horse racing was featured in the famous Born To Run book. The thing is, over the distance of marathon the horse has really good chances to win. The longer the distance gets, the bigger advantage of the trained male ultramarathon runner will be. He has a higher terminal speed than even a riderless horse, not by much, but the advantage is measurable. So ultimately the trained runner will outrun the horse.

      1. if they were galloping the whole time they would probably pass out, remember the race is 2 hours!
      2. I think that is fair, considering that horses are faster than humans
      4. Without a rider telling them where to go they literally would run everywhere, and not say where they are meant to be. Also horses are bred unlike zebras to carry the weight of a rider. They are like 100x stronger than a human. For them carrying a rider is no problem

      Sophia Ravenhunter and also the human finished first, but the horse still won. They're still counting by time, so it's not like the horses get any sort of advantage from that. I think it's just to make sure the humans don't get in the way on the track, at least for part of the time.

    The only animal that could run at long distance better that a human at ultra marathons are huskies. And that's because they have a special adaptation that at the beginning phases of the race they use the fats and proteins and they completely cut off their glycogens stores. Allowing them to use small burst of glycogens thru out the race just enough to promote the usage of fats and proteins thru out the entire race. In the otherhand us humans burn most of the glycogen at the beginning phases. And even though they switch to use fats and proteins at some point. They still need that small amount of glycogen that helps burn the other macronutrients. Sadly the glycogens stores are small and deplets rather quickly.

There's an annual event with special Arabian horses carrying less than 300 pounds running 100 miles(160km) in a day . The record for a human in 24 hours is 188 miles (303.5km.) Dogs are the best in the snow though, even when pulling a sled.

    I have few points of concern. Horses have been a mode of transportation for centuries and used in so many wars and battlefields. If they were animals of lesser stamina, they would not have got the place they have got in human history. Also there are so many complexities involved - if you pit a human and antelope, humans may have more stamina but antelope has incredible speed that it can build a sizable lead before taking a short break, recover and start again

      First off thanks for sharing such a wonderful video, it left awestruck, got me thinking. I'm sure this will make me do more research on this. But what about the point I made on horses, can humans outrun a horse?, horses have been used as a vehicle for centuries and Im inclined to believe that it must have had great deal of stamina as people would have travelled very long distances on it

    • @skunkbear
      @skunkbear  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sharath S.K Well, as you saw in the video, some humans have outrun some horses. Why do we ride horses, then? Well, it certainly saves our energy for other activities. And in a battle situation, as you mention, a horse could sprint much faster. But when you look at the use of horses to travel long distances at speed (for example the Pony Express in the American West) they tend to switch horses every 10-15 miles. In the end, I think who has better stamina very much depends on the conditions. But when you look at a horse's physiology, thermoregulation and behavior in the wild, it appears to have evolved for lots of walking/grazing and occasional sprints. When you look at human physiology and thermoregulation and try to understand the behavior of early humans, it seems that we evolved for distance running. And that's the theory that this video explores. For your further reading, I would recommend the work of Daniel Lieberman.

    The early humanoids hunted how you described but they most likely did NOT hunt creatures as fast and mobile as antelope. It was probably bigger slower animals like buffalo and they even hunted mammoths. These creatures would wear down easier after about 10 miles rather than upwards of 50 like an antelope.

    It has to be more about what is equivalent. While yes, humans may be able to run longer, it’s all about what is natural. If a horse was allowed to run how it wanted to which is resting once in a while, they would beat humans in probably every distance over 25 miles. And they could still beat us under 25 miles because they don’t need to stop and rest if the race is that short

    Another reason humans can run longer distances than horses is that we can control our breathing, horses have to breathe with their stride. As you noticed the horses had to trot parts of the way to be able to catch their breath. The humans were running the entire time. This pretty much means horses can't run at their fastest pace for long periods of time.

  • @Frredster
    @Frredster 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd say it's kind of obvious that the horse would win. After all, they have twice as many legs as we do, and a bigger body with more muscles. That's more power and speed right there, even taking into account the human on the horse's back.

      its not so much a complete comparison but more a show of how well we do endurance run. You think back a couple of thousand years ago we could probably out run any animal over a distance. Just a show of why we dont run fast it was more evolutionary compatible to make us slow but distant if that makes sense

      sojib ahmed hard to be fair. Sure strap forty pounds to our back. But then swing it the other way. Double, quadruple the distance and suddenly horses start winning less. Move it to a hotter climate.

    Wolves are better than humans at distance running. They can run about 70 km at a pretty good pace.

    • @skunkbear
      @skunkbear  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +klobberbot Well, wolves trot about 8 km per hour, but check out these ultramarathon times: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultramarathon
      There are stories of wolves traveling 120 miles in day when hunted, but the human record for a day of running is 188 miles.

    • @klobberbot
      @klobberbot 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NPR's Skunk You're comparing a highly trained, well conditioned athlete who is focused on a goal to a random wolf. Since there are no reliable records of wolf runs, let's use the next best thing, a sled dog. The Iditarod is a 1000 mile race done in less than 10 days. Those dogs are running 100+ miles a day, they're pulling a sled and they can only go as fast as the slowest dog in the group, which I guarantee is faster than the Olympic marathon pace. Point is, there is no way a man can keep up with a sled dog and it's not gonna get tired before the man does. From wikipedia: The VO2 max (aerobic capacity) of a typical Iditarod dog is about 240 milligrams of oxygen per kilogram of body weight, which is about three times that of a human Olympic marathon runner

    • @skunkbear
      @skunkbear  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +klobberbot Though I could point out that you started the wolf/human comparison :) sure - let's take sled dogs! I agree that they are probably humanity's most worthy competitor!! But, playing devil's advocate, I'd be curious if you could find a sled dog that has travelled more than 188 miles in a day. The current record holder for the Iditarod seemed to manage about 150 miles/day at most. His average speed was around 7 mph - and his fastest leg averaged 10.9 mph. The Olympic marathon pace you mentioned is more than 12 mph - close to 13.
      I agree - a person probably couldn't keep up this pace and win the Iditarod (unless it was held in a warmer climate, where dogs would be at a disadvantage thermodynamically). It's still impressive to me that a 43-year-old guy name Dave Johnston did the first 350 miles of the race on foot in 4 days pulling 30 pounds (compared to the ~20 lbs per dog a sled team desals with).
      Also - I'm glad you mentioned the focus necessary from the human athlete. I left that out of the video, but I think our brains are actually another major adaptation that makes us good long distance runners. We can motivate ourselves to keep going, and most importantly we can pace ourselves to conserve energy. Even if sled dogs and horses could keep to a race route without us, I suspect that without an experienced rider or musher, they would tire themselves by sprinting. And of course, without us, they would never have been bred to become the species they are, or trained up to racing shape in the first place.
      In the end, I don't think the cool thing about this is that we are necessarily better than this or that animal - it's that this not-very-flashy physical ability we have tells us something about how we evolved.

    • @klobberbot
      @klobberbot 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NPR's Skunk Bear For the record, I don't know the first thing about dog racing, but I did do some Googling - I couldn't find any evidence of sled dogs running a timed race at 26.2 miles, but I found times for the 40 mile splits of an 80 mile race, the 13th Wilderness Classic in Elkford, Canada. The winner finished leg one in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 41 seconds. The next day they completed the second leg even faster, in 02:18:40. That's a 3:30 pace for 40 miles! So we lose that one by about 15 miles.
      As far as 188 miles in one day goes... The winner of the 2014 Bogus Creek 150 mile sled dog race finished in 17 hours, 54 minutes. About a 7:10 mile pace. I have no idea if that's even close to a good time by dog sled standards. It is by no means Olympic Marathon speed, but again we're talking about 5 and half times the distance. 188 miles in 24 hours comes out to a 7:40 pace, so I'm pretty confident in my assertion that the sled dogs beat us there too.
      I'm not trying to diminish the impressive accomplishments of any of these endurance athletes. I'm just saying there is no way a man can defeat a sled dog in a race, unless, as you mentioned, it was under conditions of considerable heat. I stand by my original statement that a man can't beat a wolf either, but I have no way to prove that. A sled dog is probably about as close to a wolf as we're gonna get for the sake of this argument.

    I find this slightly inaccurate, in the wild, hoses travel over 100 miles per day, without stopping, this is what has made them so unappealing to predators, along with their strong ability to defend themselves, human can run for a long time as well, but not at full speed like horses can. Being able to make tight turns is also something horses are able to accomplish, take barrel racing for example, a speed event where horse and rider must round a small barrel with tight precision cloverleaf pattern, the tighter the turn, the less time it takes.

    This is B.S. I have bird dogs that can run for hours in heavy brush in the Appalachian mountains without rest---no human could even begin to do that. The cardiac output of a human pales to a dog breed bred for running. Dogs do not need to sweat to cool-they have other mechanisms. Wild animals may only rest or slow when they feel secure from their predator without the awareness they are not and to stay within a home area for a sense of security. Humans can use their intelligence, like other preadtors, to take advantage of this to sneak up on them.

  • @tristunalekzander5608
    @tristunalekzander5608 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    A longer distance and the humans would win every time. The distance wasn't hardly long enough for the horse's endurance to catch up with them and they are faster sprinters so obviously they would win in shorter distances. We used horses in medieval times because they could turn grass into energy so we didn't have to eat extra food to run or walk everywhere, or we used them to carry heavy things. Humans are by _far_ better runners and probably often hunted animals like horses.

  • @MaximumNewbage
    @MaximumNewbage 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If human's whole thing is endurance, in order to properly give a fair shot to humans, they should have made the thing longer. Double or triple distance. Then I'm pretty sure you have a more even spread of horse vs huma winners instead of winners being mostly horses

Also, the fact that a human can team up with other humans for complex missions or adapt engines to do things way more efficiently than animals can puts us far ahead categorically. There's nothing any animal could ever do that a squad of humans couldn't.
