I've always been intimidated by double pointed needles and sock heels. Youve made it make so much sense and I'm going to try knitting some now thanks to you! Thank you for showing us your dropped stitches and how to rescue them.
I knitted a pearl stitch instead of a knit stitch just now. it was about 10 rows down. Just dropped the stitch for the ten rows. Picked it up the correct way and hey presto. Thanks so much for joining me. xx
Hi! I have always loved your chinwags! This video is especially helpful to me! I absolutely love the way you knit socks and this video and your straight forward easy to understand method is the way I will be doing my socks going forward. I have always been confused with sock knitting and you have removed the confusion. Thank you a million times!! I will watch this video and re-watch until it is ingrained in my brain!! Thank you again! Your socks are beautiful and I am excited to begin. ❤
I've just had a lovely time knitting along with you. Making myself some new bed socks. Using some odds and ends up. I usually knit magic loop, but I've got some flexi flip trio needles to try. All is going well with them. I used a Winwick mum tutorial to make my first pair about 10 years ago. Now, I always have at least one pair on the needles. I shall be trying the toe graft, I usually kitchener. Thanks for sharing your techniques. Take care. Xx
I really enjoyed your video. I love making socks in the round two at a time and can’t wait to try your flat cast on before putting on circular needles. Your relaxing voice and no background music was very enjoyable. Can’t wait to watch more from you.
Another wonderful and uplifting podcast Penne.Enjoyed every minute.Thank you so very much for doing a tutorial for socks, really appreciate it!!Hope you have an enjoyable week crafting. As for me... i'm off to start the socks!😂❤
I really enjoyed this video Pene. We can always learn something new. The cast on you used is the same one my Grandma showed me when she taught me to knit. I thought it wouldn't be stretchy enough for a cuff. I love seeing how other people knit, hold their yarn, etc. Thanks for sharing and laying out the maths. X
Thank you for sharing with us how to make socks I found this very informative and easy to understand. Thank you so much! I'll be watching you again. I've subscribed to you
What a lot of work you did to make this video, I have had my sock wool for almost a year and I feel I can get started now thanks to your video ( after I complete the cardigan I have been knitting for 2 years of course 😂). Thank you Penny.
I picked up a lovely tip before you had completely cast on and then knitting flat and then joining I think is brilliant. Thanks so much for making this video. I am now a subscriber
Thank you Penny, I enjoyed this and will watch over and over! I knit continental and do use dpn's some but mostly circulars. I have learned a lot watching you! You are a Master knitter and Crafter!
THANK YOU so much for this sock tutorial Penne, so easy to follow and I’m going to give it a go. I have only knitted one pair of socks and swore there would never be a second because I found it so confusing, you have made it look more achievable. I’m off to the shops tomorrow to buy some wool, thank you once again x
I have knit socks by magic loop and two circulars but have always had problems with double pointed needles for a heel unless it was a short row heel. Your video made it seem so easy because the gusset stitches were on a separate needle and easy to pick up. I can’t wait to make a pair this way. Thank you so much.
Hello, Penelope. I’m a learning knitter (coming from crochet) and I’ve just finished the first sock of my very first pair. It is too big! (I’ll have to give it to my sister.) I just want to finish the second sock and move on to another, smaller pair. I think I’m hooked! 🥰 Watching your video is a comfort. Your pleasant voice is very calming and your instructions are clear. Thank you, from Carola in California 🌻🧶
Well, exactly the same happened to me. My first sock too big! However, good practice for you and now you know you like doing it! You'll get there, so pleased you found the video helpful. Anything I can help with give me a message. xx
Hello Penelope I’ve just found your channel and I think your tutorial is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Thank you, I am now subscribed to Penelope’s chats. Have a lovely day 💞💞😂
Hi Pene. Thank you for showing how you knit socks. I am currently knitting my first pair of socks. I am very interested to see how others knit their heels and toes to figure out the best way for me. Its funny for years I had no interest in socks, now I can't get enough!
Thank you for this detailed video Penny. I’ve often thought about knitting socks but was daunted thinking it would be too difficult but you’ve inspired me to have a go! 😊 x
Thank you Pene, great video. The way you start your sock on straights is great. Saves a lot of messing about, so simple. Going to try your method for socks, you made it so simple. Thanks again.
Hello Pene, I’ve been knitting socks for several years now and had never heard of The Finchley Graft, however I’m going to try it on my next pair as yours looked so neat. Also I like how your cast on looked, I’ve only used long tail cast on, so I’ll definitely try this as well. Thanks for giving your time to record your Chinwags, I always look forward to watching you.
I never liked knitting even though both of my grandmas knitted... One even knitted three of the "Lady Dianna" round baby shawls! I remember my mother assisting her in counting the stitches at points. ❤ I watched this whilst crafting so you kept me company 🫶😘
Thank you for sharing this! Finchly’s graft! What a wonderful way to remember how to end those toes! Been on a sock knitting fling lately and I’m hoping to get much more prolific. Your clear video gives me lots of hope!
@@penelopeschinwag I really love your cast on method and the film angle was perfect easy to see what you were doing and you explained details brilliantly ❤️
Thank you so much for this lovely video! I had stopped making socks because I always hard holes at the heel and I could never master the Kitchener bind off. I have renewed hope that I can enjoy some success with all your help. Before I start any socks I have to bind off a sweater I am making for myself. The pattern recommended an Italian bind off which has been compared to the Kitchener stitch. I think I will have to find another stitch because I've been working on this for a week and am not having any success. Thank you for reminding me knitting doesn't have to be stressful!!!!!!!
Such a lovely message thank you Kathleen, I wonder if the Finchley graft would work in the same way. It gives the same results as the Kitchener just done a different way. You maybe could give it a go. Yeah, let's enjoy our crafting and find a way that suits us, you can always rewrite your pattern 😂. On episode 135 I show you the quilt I am making and in the pattern there was two mistakes and so I had to change it. I'll chat about that next time. xx
Wonderful knitting. Learned techniques to make my socks stronger and look neatly done. The toe was never right. Now your Finchley Graft will certainly alleviate that. Thank you❣
Thank you Pene, so interesting and helpful. I prefer the Finchley Graft as well and start the same way as you, then put the stitches on magic loop or Dan’s. X💕
Oh my word Pene, thankyou so much for this. I’ve knitted all my life, however, I have only attempted socks 4 times. The start has always put me off and I get into such a muddle and never continue. I’m off on a little holiday in February to Devon and it’s my intention to get a pair of socks made. So now you will be virtually coming with me and I’m confident I will have success. Just what I needed a nice calm video to follow.xxx
Wow, Pene, I learned several new things that I'm looking forward to giving a go: the Finchley graft, casting on straight for a few rows then joining in the round, picking up extra stitches at the gusset. and purling the first row of the gusset just to name a few. Inspired. Now to dig out those two pair of socks that I abandoned at the toe... All the best to you from a fan in California!
I enjoy knitting socks and will try your way of knitting them. Thank you for the explanation of how you do it. Excellent video. You are a good teacher, so calm and relaxed.
Morning Pene, your vlog popped up on my system this morning as I have been searching ‘how to knit socks’ recently. I have made my very first socks, which I am pleased with, but did learn many things from your video which I will try out on my next pair, thanks. New subscriber here x
Ironically, last week I bought yarn and needles to start my first pair of socks. I’ve always been intimidated by socks, but watching your video has really helped me have a good visual of what I’ll be doing! Thank you so much. Have saved this for reference! Looking forward to more of your videos.
Hello Pene I’ve just found you and how pleased am I. I’ve been sitting here watching this and knitting my sock also and how lovely and relaxing this was. I always hated the start of the sock as it is so hard to stop the needles twisting. Now I shall do it your way ! The finish too is so much easier as I always get in a bit of a muddle with that Kitchener stitch. Really great and so nice to meet you xx
And you Lynda, My usual episodes are different to this one but so many people asked me to show how I knit my socks, well I finally did and it seems to have helped you. I hope you enjoy my other episodes too. xx
I have tried knitting socks in the past, but at some point the process became too frustrating for me. I think the problem was that written instructions alone can be confusing or just poorly written. Your video is clear and comprehensive, and it's inspired me to try knitting socks again. I will watch it twice before casting on, just so I have enough understanding in reserve. I do love the ribbed pattern as well. Thank you for this, Penelope.
My son was watching your previous episode and he said there's another episode to continue. I thought he was wrong but this Sock episode was on. (Nathan has very poor eyesight now and he had a fall today when out with a Carer. I was so upset that he had a fall and down stairs too. He is 50 and lives at home). I knit my socks a little differently..the 9 inch circular is my fav. I love your fancy DPNs. I especially like how you knit the heel.. you knit 2 tog..I knit 2 tog and slip 1. I like your longer heel. Socks are a beat knit. Im trying to knit a year of knitting Opal Socks from Oct to Oct. No group just me knitting socks..in between other crafting. Best wishes from Sydney, Pen xx
Hi Barbara, So sorry about your son, I'm glad he told you about this episode! I love the way we all knit socks differently but get a lovely end result. Well done with the October to October challenge. xx
G’day Penne, you are amazing, so giving and generous THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge & experience ⭐️🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀I’ve always been scared of knitting with d’pointed needles but you demystified it I’m gonna have a try. 🍀🍀🇦🇺
Wonderful Carolyn, Any problems just message and I will try to help you. With the double pointed needles I find you know where you are. All the stitches are in the right place and you know what to do with them, no muddles. And after all it is just two straight needles you are knitting with. xx
What a lovely video. I like to use different needles when I knit socks. I often shy away from dpns because they are fiddly. But I will definitely try your method! Thank you 😊
For me dpns keep the stitches in a methodical way so I know what I'm doing at a glance. See how you get on, but if you're happy with your way stick to it! xx
Thank you so much Penne. You are so nice to show how to need socks step by step. I’m hesitate to start mine due to I can’t read script. I plan to give it a go.
That is SOOO SMART! Especially good for beginners who get all freaked out thinking about all the needles! Best knitting tip I’ve seen in ages! PS I LOOOVE the bunny sock! I have yet to try any stranded colorwork though 😖
I start the same way. I knit a few rows flat then I put them on double pointed needles or I use magic loop with circular needles.🧶. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Thanks Ruth, I'm not the only one to put the first couple of rows flat then. I just got fed up with making sure it wasn't twisted. I never can get on with magic loop. I love the way the stitches are all in the right place with dpns. Thanks for getting in touch. xx
@penelopeschinwag Thank you pene, I am a crocheter, I only learnt that during COVID. As a result of crochet with wool in my left hand I've very recently ( last week) learned Norwegian knitting. So I'm hoping to attempt just a plain knit socks. Your instructions and video are so calm and detailed that I actually feel confident about knitting socks. It's the one item I've always wanted to try just for myself. You are going to be my no: 1 go too.😁 Xx Subscribed 🙏x
Beautiful socks. I learnt to knit in the 1950’s and I knit like you. Apparently our way of holding the needles is now known as lever knitting. Another person on a video called it the Miss Marple style of knitting.
Wow! Just came across your channel,. I Find this very interesting,. I like how you do your sock...😁☺️😊👍❤️💜🤗😁 Happy Knitting 🧶 .. have a wonderful day...
Thank you Penny for this amazing thorough tutorial. I enjoyed watching and learning new techniques in making this sock in size 72. However I do have a some constructive feedback in that your hands covered the written instructions for replicating the small sizes up to 72. If we were needing a smaller size, the pattern would be difficult to follow or make. I can slow down the speed to write smaller sizes however your hands blocked it out. As a kind request , would it be possible to provide the size variation in your community page for small size options Otherwise from this, your video clarity made it so easy to follow from beginning to end. It’s so well done that even a novice knitter can follow. I truly enjoyed watching 👍
@ Greetings Penny, I’m so grateful for your kindness in providing the pattern format for the additional sizes. I’m moderately hearing impaired and sometimes even the captions don’t match up to the instructions in the tutorials. Needless to say I can’t thank you enough. You’re a wonderful knitter who has the ability to educate as well. I’m very happy to have come across your channel 🥰
I cant get the hang of DPN's so knot mine magic loop. I do rhe same to start and knit a couple of rows straight but the Finchley graft is new to me, thank you for the video and for showing the way you knit socks
I hope you could see the Finchley graft ok, I had my hands up a bit too high for the camera but couldn't film again. It's so easy, hope you like it. xx
Firstly, congratulations on reaching over 3.08 subscribers you have earned every single one. Which shoe size are you knitting for today (Unsure which one to use) and also what wool are you using and the quantity? I’m quite excited to knit socks I’ve never attempted these before but you have given me the confidence to start, but not until I’ve finished my shawl. I’ve knitted many baby bootees and it looks similar but I’m sure I’ll find out soon. It’s always nice to have the next project in the pipe line. These are the best Chinwags❤
Hi, feel a bit wobbly about the number! It was never my aim! The shoe size doesn't matter as you just take the measurement from the back of the heel to the toe and deduct 2 inches. This is the number for Pete. I knit myself 56st. The wool is West Yorkshire Spinners, pigeon. Thanks Carol. xx
Love watching you knit this beautiful sock and your thought process in get the best fit. I've got to give this a go. I been trying to get the right fit for my foot. Have a wide foot with high arch I'm always wearing out the heel. Went back to doing the heel flap in garter stitch for extra wearable. Do you have any thoughts on this? Hope your having a great day. Coming from the "driftless region" of Wisconsin.
I have had so many comments on my video - I only thought my friends would watch it, how wrong I have been! I will do another follow up one on my thoughts about fit and wool. - Just my thoughts, not a professionals opinion. xx
Absolutely brilliant! Like others have said never heard of the Finchley Graft & I’ve knitted lots of socks will give it a go. Were you working with Knit Pro Karbonz & do you like them? I once tried them but didn’t like how my stitches seemed to catch on the join between the carbon shaft & metal tip. Did you notice similar? I’m quite a tight knitter so maybe that’s the reason why. Look forward to your “wool” video. Dianne 🧶
Sorry for being so impatient, and thanks for your quick answer. You did an expert job in the end, though it was difficult for me. Is there any video where you demonstrate this tricky business of sawing up the loose ends of the start?
I absolutely love the way you cast on and then don,t go to the dpn,s until a little later! There is absolutely no-one on toy tube that does that. I have given up on sock knitting, but now I'm encouraged to try again! You said you use Addi 2.25 but what length do you use?
This is absolutly the best explanation I have ever found. I thank you so much. I think I can do this. thank you again.
Hope you can, any problems just message. xx
Thanks so much for joining me. xx

Fantastic Leslie, really glad it helped you. Any problems let me know. xx
Thank you for a very good and educational pattern for socks. I will definitely start knitting after this. Greetings from Sweden 🌹
Wonderful, from Sweden! Welcome. xx
Starting sock on two needles is brilliant…and I love the finchley graft. Thank you so much for the tips🥰🇺🇸
More than welcome Priscilla xx
Those were my favorite tips also. I love how the whole construction comes together.
Take care. Xx
How lovely we've been knitting along together. I am now doing the second sock! xx
I really enjoyed your video. I love making socks in the round two at a time and can’t wait to try your flat cast on before putting on circular needles. Your relaxing voice and no background music was very enjoyable. Can’t wait to watch more from you.
Thanks Joyce xx

Thanks Julie, Enjoy your knitting. xx
I really enjoyed this video Pene. We can always learn something new. The cast on you used is the same one my Grandma showed me when she taught me to knit. Welcome Elsie.xx
Thank you Penny, I enjoyed this and will watch over and over! I knit continental and do use dpn's some but mostly circulars. I have learned a lot watching you! You are a Master knitter and Crafter!
Aw thanks. xx

I’m off to the shops tomorrow to buy some wool, thank you once again x
Well done and any problems just let me know and one thing is you can rewatch the video to help xx
I have learned before that starting a flat knitted start helps me so I don’t get a twisted circle, and it’s easier to cast on.
Excellent, it's a good tip. xx
I have knit socks by magic loop and two circulars but have always had problems with double pointed needles for a heel unless it was a short row heel. Been knitting socks 4ever. But this the best way I've ever seen. Thank you for such beautiful work.
Thanks so much, just the best way I have found over the years. Happy it helped you. xx
I just love your cast on! I've never seen that way before! It makes so much sense! Thank you!

@ thank you 😊 I like to use different methods. I really want to be able to use dpns well. 😀
Thank you so much Penne. You are so nice to show how to need socks step by step. I’m hesitate to start mine due to I can’t read script. I plan to give it a go.
Is there anyone who could help you with the script? Just a few numbers now and then. See how you feel. xx
I would never do this, but I've enjoyed watching the proces. Thanks!
Thanks for joining me and enjoying the process. It is quite meditative which is why I think we like to knit them. xx
Thank you Pete really enjoying this I would do 2 rows before splitting the stitches onto three needles. 😊
👍🏻
Thank you Pene .
Very welcome Jean xx
Thank you for your tutorial. I am knitting my 3rd pair. I think I have it now. Thanks again.
I can't believe it, marvellous!
Oh my goodness, you are an excellent knitter! I'm sure all the knitters got a great lesson from this episode. On to the next!
Thanks 🤩
That is SOOO SMART! Especially good for beginners who get all freaked out thinking about all the needles! Best knitting tip I’ve seen in ages!
PS I LOOOVE the bunny sock! I have yet to try any stranded colorwork though 😖
I just couldn't resist the Bunny Wishes sock, but generally I like. a plain comfortable sock. Thanks for joining me, Anne
Thanks and like your wallpaper!
So do I, it's William Morris, calming. xx
Beautiful socks!

Well, Just me making a sock Betty but glad you enjoyed it. xx
Your gorgeous!! I just started knitting and your video popped up.
How lovely to keep you company. xx
Amazing, thank you. I’m definitely going to try the Finchley method on the next pair of socks 😊
You can't beat it and I was so pleased to have found it a couple of years ago.
Thanks for getting in touch. xx
Thank you so much for this vlog i can never seem to knit socks but you make it look so easy so i going to try your way very helpful vlog xx
Any problems get in touch and I'll try and help. xx
Oh this was such a brilliant video. Thank you so very much. I have saved this so that I can attempt my first sock, UNDAUNTED 😄 xx
Brilliant, so pleased, any problems do message and I'll see if I can help.
@penelopeschinwag
Thank you pene, I am a crocheter, I only learnt that during COVID.
You are going to be my no: 1 go too.😁 Xx
Subscribed 🙏x
Thank you so much for the great tutorial.
You're welcome, just the way I knit my socks with the camera on my shoulder! xx
Beautiful socks. I learnt to knit in the 1950’s and I knit like you. Apparently our way of holding the needles is now known as lever knitting. Another person on a video called it the Miss Marple style of knitting.
Love that 'the Miss Marple Style!'
Thank you so much your tutorial was very well done.
Thanks 🥰
Wow! Just came across your channel,. I Find this very interesting,. I like how you do your sock...😁☺️😊👍❤️💜🤗😁 Happy Knitting 🧶 .. have a wonderful day...
You too, have a peek at my playlist if you like. xx
@penelopeschinwag yes ma'am I will .. thank you ma'am 😁❤️💜🤗🧶
Pretty yarn.
West Yorkshire Spinners, Pigeon. It's comfortable. xx
This is amazing! I can’t wait to try it :o) Thank you!!!
Brilliant!
Excellent video. I love to knit socks but I prefer to knit toe up. Thanks for sharing, I have subscribed.
Welcome Lynda xx
Thank you so much I’m so want to do now is the time
Go for it!
Hi, thanks for you lovely feedback. I will put it in the description box.
Thanks again, I did wonder as I do say the instructions. Understand now. May take me a couple of days to get it down though. xx
I do my socks with both pairs on the needle I learnt that so I finish them together
I love that there is so many ways to knit socks xx
@@penelopeschinwag ♥️
THX GBU all . I didnt know on gusset to knit in back of loop. Maybe thats why I have spaces all the way up. I use circs though.
Hi Barbara, I don't know anything about the results on circs, but think it would be the same. Happy crafting. xx
You cast on the way I do, my gran taught me that way too
Lovely memories. xx
Thanks Carol. xx
Thankyou
You're welcome Susan.
- Just my thoughts, not a professionals opinion. xx
That's exactly how I start my socks then I transfer to the double pointed needles, so much simpler.
Great minds eh!
Dianne 🧶
I think I used ADDI but I have had the Karbonz and found the same. I think the Finchley Graft is brilliant, so easy. xx
@@penelopeschinwagthanks for info 👍 x
Ive been doing the same ribbing 2 rows then i use magic loop method. The top never twists. So easy
Good idea isn't it. It certainly helped me. xx
Such a good tutorial! Thanks a lot. I would like to know what yarn are you using.
Hi Maria, I am using West Yorkshire Spinners, Pigeon colour. xx
@ thanks!
Wonderfully relaxing, this video. - But knitting 3 rows flat at the beginning, how do you close the gap once the sock is finished?
I do show you at the end, so keeep watching! xx
Thanks so much, I use a 6" needle. xx
You did a terrific job. And you are very lovely.......
Thanks so much. xx
Beautiful work, I'm a new sub and live your channel. What yarn are you using for your socks. Not sure if you said and I missed it.
It's West Yorkshire Spinners, Pigeon. xx
