  • This was a Carrier Heat Exchanger replacement on a 5 ton package unit. Nothing too crazy you just have to make sure you get all the proper gaskets in place.

    Great tip about the parts breakdown, it is really getting to the point where you need it for most other parts in addition to heat exchangers. It seems there is always something missing like some hardware, a gasket or something else that we as tech's assume would be included. The same thing goes for auto parts.

    Carrier heat exchangers fail after 7 to8 years. Good news is they have a 10 year warranty. I had a school with 22 Carrier gas packs and 21 had seams split or holes at the “U” bend. The parts you’re referring to are the flame retainer and burner support. The induce draft assembly and run cap should be replaced with the heat exchanger. The rollout switch is problematic as well. The by-metal disk gets rusty and the vibration of the unit running can cause them to trip. Just tap it with your finger you’ll see what I’m talking about. I replace them with a sealed adjustable limit. Oh and if the model # starts with 48 it’s gas if it is 50 then it’s electric heat. Have a great day.

    I live in Sacramento area... I’ve found 7 this winter, all on Carrier 48 series units. Find them all the time.
    The two parts your referencing is flame retainer and exhaust regulator.
    When I replace heat exchangers I normally replace with new flame retainers, exhaust regulators, burner support assembly (sheet metal that the induce draft motor mounts to) also I replace high limit, and flame sensor.

    Hey man great video, it reminds me of all the times that I've been replacing heat exchangers over here in New York, it is always the same thing, if you asked what I heat exchanger they just send you the heat exchanger, that's it , I don't know why they do that, they should give you the whole thing you make sense all parts all the gaskets and screws but anyways great video again brother.

    Why don't they make the heat exchanger out of stainless steel? Is it because of cost reasons or because they want to sell more parts and units?

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know about heat exchangers, but hot combustion products are hot combustion products and the stainless exhaust pipes and mufflers you get for a car are about twice or 3 times as expensive as the sections of galvanized exhaust tube they'll sell you at the auto parts store.

    • @jonhinman2471
      @jonhinman2471 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Someone absolutely needs to start making these better using stainless or titanium or something!

    • @jonhinman2471
      @jonhinman2471 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@44R0Ndin if you Google why heat exchangers are so expensive, it's because they use rare metals... So it's absurd this one would rust, regularly fail AND be expensive, PLUS a 45 day lead time! They are out of their damn mind if they think this is good for their company!!!

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jonhinman2471
      I think you have catalytic converters and heat exchangers confused. They're not the same thing. Catalytic converters such as used on your car contain high amounts of Platinum and other rare metals, because at the high operating temperatures in a catalytic converter, those elements encourage the further reaction of unburnt hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, improving the emissions of your vehicle.
      Heat exchangers just passively move heat energy from one fluid to another fluid, while keeping the two separate. A radiator is technically a kind of heat exchanger.
      The only time heat exchangers use weird materials is if one of the working fluids is highly corrosive or otherwise reactive. Those are the only ones that have any chance of using "rare" metals.
      Most of the time, heat exchangers use either copper alloys (if size is the major concern), pretty ordinary stainless steel of the same grade that car exhaust pipes are made of (if cost is the major concern), or even aluminum (if you need a balance between cost and performance and corrosion resistance).
      Technically, since it does exchange heat between two different fluids, any radiator or condenser or evaporator is "a type" of heat exchanger. However, usually it's meant "between two gases, or between two liquids". The heat exchanger in the natural gas fired heating section of a package unit isn't using anything really that "rare". Cost-optimized units use normal mild steel, durability optimized units use low-grade stainless steel same as car exhaust pipes.
      The reason that copper is sometimes used is because of a constraint requiring maximum heat transfer capacity in the smallest physical dimensions, which requires copper because that's the best conductor of heat or electricity aside from Silver (which is better used with other characteristics, usually leveraging the unique types of chemistry you can do with silver, such as photographic film, or as jewlery).

    I'm from Italy, here I don't see any of this type... So, why use gas if there is a compressor?? Why don't use the heat pump? (someone can explain because to me it's wired, here in italy most home have a gas furnace, some new house have heat pump and commercial most have heat pump in the form of mini split or VRF system, also in home we use minisplit for the really hot day in the summer)

    • @qeesher
      @qeesher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heat pumps lose efficiency in cold weather and dont give too much heat. They could be used if there is no available gas and with heat pumps you need heat strips as a supplemental heat source.

    That unit sure is filthy, which is likely one of the reasons for failure. Also, these guys just rust out after time and use especially when oversized and that dirty in the cabinet. Heat exchangers are exposed to high temperatures and acidic noxious gases causing corrosion.
    If your parts guy didn't give you everything needed, they need a little refresher. All our counter people know about the regulator and flame retainer requirements. But we are also in Chicago and deal with the RTU'S with gas heat every single day. If you need that insulation, it should be available, but just needs to be ordered from the factory. The fact it is in such bad consition i due to the dirt conditions and high heat giving it crispy critter look.
    I have sold these exchangers for 17 years at the counter level. Always get the regulator and retainer and ALWAYS seal with hi temp silicone. They don;t come with because if I remeber right heat exchangers and the regulators are manufactured in different plants. I have had guys not seal heat exchangers and can't figure out why there is so much CO in the building.
    If you are a legitimate contractor and deal with a Carrier supplier you can ask them for access to HVACpartners.com and find all the parts lists and drawings you could want. The exact same ones we have access too at the Distributor level.

    • @HVACRVIDEOS
      @HVACRVIDEOS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks bud, yeah they have not been able to find the insulation for me I'm using Sigler as my carrier distributor out here. Like I said in the video I really dont rely on suppliers getting me part numbers anymore I ask for parts breakdowns and do the work myself because I'm sick of getting burned. It's very sad because I can remember a time when the supply houses handled everything from parts and even gave tech support but that has slowly been dying off as the new blood comes into the supply houses these days. But I also understand times are tight and they need to cut costs to stay profitable, especially with majority of the manufacturers selling direct to customers these days. Anyways thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!

      Its cost, and even with seamless it will just rot out on the plenum side at the joints. They also have SS heat exchangers available for locations that will have their heat short cycling in warmer areas like Texas and Cali. The thought process from a design perspective is that if you cant design to have the delta-T across the exchanger large enough or run time long enough to drive the water out, you spec. the stainless one.

    Couple winters ago I had a high end restaurant with 10 of these puppies 4-7 ton.
    3 had bad exchangers- burn through on one of them.
    Carriers aint too hateful to change until you cross 15 ton line. Then you have to have a helper cause they're so damn big..
    Here in Ohio 10-15 years and they start to fail. They're aluminized and a weak spot mixed with condensation and viola a hole.
    Usually change these out in snow .
    Good vid and advice CHECK GAS PRESSURE- I know some guys set it by ear! Usually way to high -early failure. Crap air flow as well.
    I would add to the replacement the flat plate that bolts above burner.
    U shape with holes,flat plate with holes and the solid plate. Noticed the rust in the video. . I've always replaced all 3. Just a thought.

      Yep, CO poisoning is no joke. And no matter how clean the gas burns, some CO is produced.

    all that silicone, wouldn't want to be the next guy trying to remove it (cuss fest x 99,000) but I'm guessing the unit will be replaced around the time of next HE failure anyway.
    have to seal them up somehow!

      So, you wouldn't want to be the guy scrapping the unit then? I did alot of that when I worked HVAC. The real fun stuff is the black tar-like stuff they use to seal returns and supplies on some roof-top units.

      @@bairfamilyfarm1336 I'd rather be the guy that saves 2 unpaid hours breaking it down and hauling it off, while watching the scrappers fight and slave labor, burn their fuel and tool power to make $30 at scrap yard.....
      most don't realize it hardly makes them anything after factoring in all the costs, but I guess their time is free? granted there was a point in time, you could spend $100 and make $600+ in one lazy day, that's more like spend $100 and make $150 or less now ;)

    low airflow, short cycling, overheating, condensing, ocean/salt air and all sorts of other issues kill the HE's faster, as if they don't fail anyway.
    very often poorly placed thermostats, compounded by the nonsense of 1F temperature swing they've all went to, is root of short cycling ;)

      Yeah the original were too rusted out, the baffles help to properly control the flame

    Looks like a bunch of shitty exhaust piping from Pep-Boys. Rot out especially if they short-cycle the heating and you get a bunch of water in there.

    You still installed the dirt leg incorrectly. Gas input should come in at the top driving the particles downward to the dirt leg and the gas exits from the side.
