    Hey there... I'm a handy 72 yr old woman and just knew there had to be a way to fix this old chair, so did a search and found your video. I found some old pvc pipe hanging around, cut it and wallah! Done ... in half an hour. This works perfectly! Thanks so very much for doing this video. Saved me a lot of aggravation, saved my back, and saved me $$$.... :) Very Happy!!!

      Yes, it's quite surprising to me. I still don't quite know what the 'magic formula' is for what might make for a popular video on TH-cam. Now, if only the other videos on my channel would see even a fraction of the popularity and views (the majority of my vids it seems are lucky to get 10 or 20 views in total), then I'd have it made. :D
      But hey, I'm thrilled that this chair-fix video of mine has helped so many people.

I googled this tutorial, ordered the part on Amazon (it was like $2 with free Prime shipping, but I figured the extra $1 was worth not having to go into HD during the plague). Tall folks understand that as long as the chair doesn't sink we don't care about adjustability. Great mod. Did mine today, cut the pipe at 5-1/4" to get all the height I could. Thanks!

    • @Mysticsword
      @Mysticsword  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, you're right. I also don't have a need to adjust the height of my chair any more now that I have it set at the level I like, and I'm the only one that uses it anyways.
      Glad my video was of some help to you. :)

    • @JPSamm2U
      @JPSamm2U 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Question I too am tall is the 5-1/4 the normal max height of the piston. If yes will have the PVC cut to that length.. and thank you for a great video.. always good to save money these days or any ole day.. :-) thanks again....Mystic... waiting..

    • @Mysticsword
      @Mysticsword  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I guess it depends on the particular chair model and piston used. I'd suggest to first let the piston / shaft fully lengthen (whatever lever on your chair you would use to raise or lower the height, but don't be sitting in it at the time, and then use that lever to set your chair to full height). After that you can measure the length from the wheelbase to where it meets the chair would meet it, then you can have a PVC tube cut to that length (or slightly shorter) and hopefully that should work for your particular chair.

    • @M4KERB
      @M4KERB 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i don't care about adjusting it but as soon as you do this, you lose the compression support so its just basically like sitting on a stool.

    • @Mysticsword
      @Mysticsword  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I've gone through a few chairs like this over the years and it's quite expensive to replace a chair just because the pneumatic-piston is wearing out which causes the chair to sometimes sink. So I figured there's got to be a do-it-myself way to "fix" a chair with such a problem, and this is what I came up with. Maybe the idea can also save some other people some money if they try this method. Cheers! :)

      "Serious money" confuses me. Are cheapo chair manufacturers adopting an ink cartridge pricing model for their gas cylinders?
      I just replaced some parts on a Global Furniture Group commercial-grade chair I bought for $700 Canadian about 20 years ago, which now costs over $1400 Canadian, the gas cylinder was only $24.20 Canadian plus tax (at about 71¢ USD to the CAD), and it only took a rubber mallet, a pipe wrench, and a can of penetrating oil to replace it.
      (Specifically, I replaced a worn out seat cushion, replaced a cylinder that only started sinking after maybe 16 years of use, and swapped to hard-floor casters.)

    Looked at several different ways to fix a sinking chair. Decided on yours and it worked great. Word of caution, though. Please take note of how you take the bottom assembly off and the order in which the washers come off and go back on. There are several washers and they do have a precise order on which they go back on. Other than that, a breeze. Thanks...Tommy

    Dude, you just saved me $200+, thank you!!! My desk chair has been sinking for a year, leading to really sore knees due to them being bent at a 60-degree angle for hours at a time. I happened to have some 3/4" inner diameter PVC pipe handy, and a pipe cutting tool (meant for metal pipe, but it works on PVC, too), in less than 10 minutes, my chair is like brand new again. I was ready to say uncle and buy a new chair, I'm glad I did a diy-fix search first.

    Thank you for your video. I just did this with a PVC pipe (2") and I misjudged the length of pipe I needed. I forgot to consider the play when you sit down that's present in a chair with working hydraulics, so I made the pipe too long. Fortunately, a neighbor is helping me and we can just cut it a little bit shorter, but I thought I'd mention it here, in case others are measuring the chair at its optimal height without taking that into consideration.

    I got a DX racer a few years ago and I'm not sure what's wrong with it. The Base seems to have warped so the cylinder is grinding against the floor, and the cylinder will not keep pressure. I have need looking everywhere and I have no clue what is wrong with it.
    I cannot even get a straight answer when I'm looking for parts. Will an officer chair cylinder and base work for a DXracer? If not where can I find replacement parts?
    I'm completely lost so I'm asking on quite a few places.

    • @Mysticsword
      @Mysticsword  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In your case, from what you describe, probably the cylinder is completely broken and the bracket is bent so you may need to either replace those parts or consider getting a new chair if it's too much hassle to try to get it fixed (you could try to find a place that repairs chairs, but if the cost for that is high then you might just be better off to get a newer / better chair). Good luck.

    This video advice works exactly as depicted. Note that the suggested coupling may not be available in store. However, when you stroll down the plumbing aisle of any of the major hardware stores, there are many bins of PVC and ABS fittings of the desired dimension. I ended up using a 1+3/4" internal diameter ABS tube of 4" length. It was a "T" connector with a 1" nipple in the center of the tube. Obviously the nipple diverter is of no use for this application, but the point I'm making is that its presence doesn't hurt anything.
    Finally, this video recommends a 3.5" length. Since my chair is of the same construction as the video, and because I wanted the maximum seat height, I used a 4" length fitting and it worked perfectly.

    • @Mysticsword
      @Mysticsword  ปีที่แล้ว

      With it in place, the chair would only lower to the height until it rest on the top of the pvc part. If only one person is using the chair, then when the pvc part is at the desired length, then there no real need to adjust the height of the chair anyways.

    Not sure if this will help with my current problem. My chair's balance is all off. At first it leaned to the left, but some leaning centered it out. Now it's even worse, do you think a poly insert coupling would help balance the seat, or is this a different problem altogether?

    • @Mysticsword
      @Mysticsword  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without seeing it, I can't really say. Possibly the bracket / mount part on your chair has loosened or become off-center. Try checking that.
      Maybe using the method as shown in my video, the chair could be instead be resting on top of the coupling insert or tubing (depending on what you use), and it might "center" it again in that way. I suppose it's worth a try.

    • @BitestheStuff
      @BitestheStuff 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Mysticsword
      @Mysticsword  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, good luck. Let me know how it goes. Remember if you can't find the coupling-insert, you could use a piece of PVC tube of around the same dimensions.
      And yeah, for whatever reason this video became quite popular in a relatively short time, which for a small channel like mine is impressive. I guess sinking office chairs are a somewhat common problem (well, they have been for me over the years) and a lot of people can appreciate a cheap way to fix it. Now if only I can have more of my video become as popular. :)

      You're quite welcome. Wow, times flies. It doesn't seem so long ago that I made this video. I'm happy it's been helping many people. Cheers (and chairs)! :)
