    You can dial out the fizz on these amps.
    For those struggling to get these to sound good:
    For rock/metal with humbuckers:
    On OD2 channel there is a point on the gain knob around 2 where it goes fizz-no fizz with a tiny tweak back and forth.
    Dial the gain just back from where it starts to fizz, like I said, just below 2. Do not go too far back or you will lose treble.
    Use overdrive pedals, I use an Ibanez Tube Screamer into a Boss Super OD into the amp.
    Set the T Screamer to Drive 1/Tone 6/Level 10
    Set the Boss to Level 9/Tone 4/ then use the drive on the Boss to control the amount of gain. 2-4 works for most styles.
    Cut your mids on the amp to about 2-4 because the overdrive add mids.
    Boost your bass on the amp to about 7 as the Boss cuts a bit of low end.
    Don't forget the clean channel. Sounds great with the amp gain cranked to 6-8 on neck pickup single Coils, with or without Tube Screamer.
    And voila, they sound great. I have tried to replace this amp several times, even with valve amps and I keep going back to it!
    Hope this helps somebody!

      Sorry, the fizz to no fizz point is just below 1 on the gain, not 2 as I stated above.

    After over 20 years in storage I recently sold my head and cab and watching this reminds me of my loss that the money received can never make up for. In truth I would never get to use it again so it is hopefully better off with it's new owner . I am very glad to see you with your new setup and know that you will do much more with it than I ever did with mine (got married soon after buying it and music took a back seat for far too many years). Now retired I am too old to go gigging - that should be for you youngsters :-) !

    Part of the reason that this amp may have not been that loud is because it only generates 150 watts into a 4 ohm load & 75 watts into an 8 ohm load. If that 4x12 you plugged into is a 16 ohm cabinet, then that amp was only pushing 37.5 watts - and solid state watts at that!

    • @voxpathfinder15r
      @voxpathfinder15r 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Timothy Martin most solid state amps don’t do impedance matching like tube amplifiers do. So that’s why the wattage output varies wildly

    Dave, I just have to say how I respect you as a musician and as a guitarist. You know how to play. You FEEL the music yet you aren't a Cork Sniffer, meaning you don't dump on an amp or a guitar because of the name or weather it's tube or not. I own many amps, mostly tubes from Sunn, Peavey, Marshall, Fender, Music Man, Mesa, Orange, Line 6, Randall and EVH. Heck, even Harmony and Silvertone! However the HiWatt still eludes me. What I'm trying to say is NEVER close your mind! Don't let a name turn you off. Moreover, DON'T LET OTHER CORK SNIFFERS (meaning the typical masses) turn you off to anything! Try it! If it sounds good to you, that's all that matters! Tone is subjective. Many times what costs more, isn't necessarily the best. Also most people will open their mouths not knowing what they are talking about. Simply because they hear others bash something, without knowing for themselves they will jump on the bandwagon bashing any cost-effective or simply different types of amps and guitars. Ignore them! Check for yourself. You have a mind! Keep it open and use it! Don't let others do your thinking for you!

The mg I would never part with. I love them both so much. There’s something about the tones I can achieve with the avt that I say I love it more. There are things I can do with the mg that I can’t do with the avt and the mg tone is why I say I could never part with it. Love the contour control. They’re both great amps. Hi Dave
    bit of Avt knowhow
    know the avt cab is 8 ohm but the AVT 150h does not like being at 8 ohms and only produces 1/3 power at 8 ohms try it through your jcm900 1960 set to 4 ohms it will produce full power and while still not mega loud for a supposed 150 watts it is appreciably louder
    and sounds much better pushing 4 ohms .
    I've had 2 avt150h heads one was an early Bletchley built head from 2000 the other the Vietnamese one from the mid 2000s
    the early one had much less of that weird fizz on the od channels the later one had it
    sold the later one kept the earlier one and run an old rca 5751 preamp valve and weirdly no buzz and much more usable gain too
    the only way I found to get rid of the buzz in the later one was a 10 band eq pedal in the loop turn the mix knob for the loop up full and played about until I cut the frequency the fizz was at and it sounded appreciably better .
    mind you I use mine these days as a pedal platform and 90% of the time on the clean channel with the gain up full .
    another tip is use the master volume full open and sett you individual channel volumes to balance the difference in volumes between the channels and your over all volume too. sounds better with the master cranked flat
    as there is some electronics in the power amp section that is supposed to create power amp saturation and compression and it only kicks in at a certain point on the master and increases as the master goes up from that point . so crank it for full effect , bit like a variable fdd button on the mg but it is attached to the master if that makes sense . anymore tips or tricks with the Avt
    Dave send me a pm on youtube and would be glad to be of help as its a quirky amp that needs things done to get the best out of it.
    oh and if you come across an Avt50h cheap well worth buying not mega loud but the sweet spot in the range and very moddable
    Oh and patch cable the effects loop if theres nothing in it as its a parallel not series ;)

      All depends on the rating of the amps output
      With solid state it will be x watts into x ohms
      With a min load of x ohms
      Plus the celestion Avt speakers are very inefficient
      A guy who worked for celestion told me the specs once am sure it was either 94 or 95 dB
      A greenback is 98db efficient
      A vintage 30 is 100 dB

Sound still needs a certain level to expand and trying to capture that sound at bedroom levels has so many challenges. Its a good amp to keep if you want a nice clean sounding amp or somthing to plug pedals into. Personally i think 150w is overkill for a bedroom amp although the avt50 lacks some of the features you mentioned in the video.

    Dave I couldn't hear the fizz here but from what you describe you should have the friend you know who does amp work take a look over at it sometime. Sounds like something could've drifted off spec.

    Good video Dave. I felt differently about my MG HDFX head as well as my MG combo and the two of them made a lot of unwanted noise, it was really really loud and off putting I really don't like when amps buzz loud. I replaced it for one of these AVT's, It's exactly the same as yours. However I use mine with the Ibanez Tube screamer 808. I think it sounds great and I'm very pleased with it so far. I just got it a few days ago so I'm still finding things out about it, the overdrive channels are okay but not amazing and yes I kinda know what you mean but this can be changed the Tube Screamer changed it for me. Some have said the AVT series doesn't work well with Tube Screamers and stuff like that but for me it worked wonderfully for me.

    I have an AVT100 Combo and just in case some of you might find it useful, I want to share my settings of it (from left to right):
    * OD 1 and OD 2:
    Gain between 12 and 1 o'clock, each channel Volume at 8 o'clock,
    Bass 2 o'clock., Middle 12 o'c., Treble 9 o'c.
    * Clean:
    Gain 12 o'c, Volume at 8 o'clock (= somewhere between 1 and 2),
    Bass 10 o'c, Middle 11 o'c., Treble 9 o'c,
    (For LP-style Guitars you would dial in the treble a bit higher.)
    * Presence nearly maxed out
    * !=> Master Volume always at least 3 o'clock or maxed out [sic!]
