Nirvana and Green Day were the 2 bands that made me pick up a guitar and learn to play it. 15 years and hundreds of gigs later I am so glad I did!
As a diehard Ramones fan, I must say Green Day did an awesome job covering them. Retune the damn E string though! Downstrokes are impossible to play that fast and sing at the same time. Nonetheless, fantastic.
Landon Xander well actually johnny started playing upstrokes in about 1982 in teenage lobotomy, gimme gimme shock treatment and blitzkrieg bop and till the end just about the half of the ramones songs were played with just downstrokes. thats because the ramones got faster and faster, but johnny got older and older so just slow songs like pet sematary or rock n roll radio were possible to play with only downstokes
Salazar Slite Well, actually, those three songs you named are from 1975, 1976 and 1977 and the guitar parts in them are all downstrokes. And with the exception of a couple songs on Too Tough To Die, their songs didn't get faster during that time. And certainly you're delusional when you speak of Johnny getting "older and older." He was 24 for the first record and in 1979, when Rock and Roll Radio was written, he was 31. When Pet Semetary was released, he was 40. If you don't know what you're talking about already it's really easy to fact check these days. But nice try--trying to sound like you know what you're talking about.

Mark Waters i'm a guitarist, not the greatest ramones fan, but a fan of johnny's "simple" playing. half of "experts" just play up-down-up-down or just play in minor keys or something like that. well playing studio isn't that hard if you train for a week or 2. but "It's Alive!" is very hard and you'll sweat if you didn't pratice for months. and when you really try to play "We're Outta Here" without upstrokes you will see that it's nearly impossible. when you get it you're playing faster than johnny. "pet sematary" and "i wanna be sedated" are the fastest songs live
