I had one of the space saver tyre fitted to my car a few years ago. I wasn’t aware of the amount of tailgating that I was going to get once I got on to the motorway. That night I developed a warning ⚠️ sign to go on the rear of the boot to warn other motorists why I was driving at 50mph/80klm . Every car should have one in the boot so the driver doesn’t feel under ex stream pressure from other motorists . It’s a space saver sticker witch is the same size as an L plate sticker .

A friend of mine has just brought a 2nd hand car and has one of these compact spares wheels. Im a bit concerned because the over all diameter of the tyre is smaller than the other normal tyres. Is this actually normal ??

My question is I need an 18" space saver just incase, but when I browse for other cars, they all look the same..could I get any 18"space saver and put it on mine if needed? The bolt holes look exactly the same on all space saver wheels I've seen..could I get any 18" saver and call it job done?

WOW….. You messed this up, putting the spare on the front. Temporary spares are not to be used on the front.

I must be really weak because I haven't been able to loosen the tire bolts for years now. Kinda embarrassing since I know how to change a tire but have to call a tow truck.

Buy yourself a wheel brace, for extra leverage to loosen those wheel nuts. I’ve also got a short piece of steel pipe (~50cm?), to extend the leverage when using the wheel brace. I consider this equipment essential in the boot of the car because the tyre installers always over-tighten the wheel nuts with their air ratchets.

@@MaxFromSydney1 Thanks, I'll look into it.

When they put them on at the tyre shop with the air gun they almost always over tighten them. Tell them to not over tighten them.

@@tippy651 I removed my front wheel this morning on my new Mazda CX-5 to see if it will fit in the rear compartment where my temporary spare is. It does fit very well so might consider getting an extra normal wheel.
When removing my front wheel the nuts came off ok but tight, but one of them was extremely tight, too damn tight.
I normally will ask for the nuts to be hand tightened, they then use a torque wrench to tighten them to the correct tightness. The air guns they use often over tighten them. Alternatively when I get the car home I loosen them all a bit then hand tighten them back up myself. If any are so tight I can’t remove them at least I discover that at home and can go back to the tyre place to get them to loosen it.
But as someone has suggested getting a piece of steel tube about 2 feet long to extend the wheel wrench is good to give extra leverage.

Completely useless invention. The wheel being replaced is full size. Where do you put it? On a passangers lap?

This probably won’t be a big deal if you are driving around near where you live, but this could be a huge hassle on a driving holiday when the boot is full.
Some car models come with a full size spare. Some cars come with a space saver but can actually fit a full size spare under the boot floor, and can be purchased separately. If this is important, it should sway your buying decision and you can reward such a car maker with your business.

If these tyres are really saving space then companies should give 2 space saver tyre instead of one.

I would not want to be driving a vehicle if I need to fit two space saver tyres on it. Accident waiting to happen
