London’s NEW Electric Double Decker Bus - Route 36 [Optare Metrodecker EV]

  • Today was the second day in service for Go Ahead London’s Optare Metrodecker Electric Vehicle (EV) on TFL London Bus Route 36 to New Cross. The motor noise of this demonstrator vehicle was amazing as demonstrated by this journey. This bus was converted to electric power by MacTec, similar to Vantage Power, who convert diesel buses into a hybrid.
    Operated by Go Ahead from New Cross Bus Garage. It spent its early life with First, I wonder when Optare will get any orders for this bus?
    Filmed in Paddington and Queen’s Park.

    Nice video! I like the sounds this makes, though I'm still not too keen on the styling of the MetroDecker, particularly the upper front (I prefer it to the BYDs however). Also the seats over the wheel arches don't look like they'd be very comfortable.
    I do wonder whether the MetroDecker will ever get any significant orders. Optare's previous attempt at a double decker, the Rapta, never went into production and before that (over 8 years ago now) there were plans for an integral version of the Olympus after they took over that design. It would be a shame if this turned out to be a failure, especially as Optare's other products also seem to be struggling a bit lately (the MetroCity didn't catch on in London though about 100 provincial buses have been delivered so far, mainly to smaller operators, and the Solo and Versa aren't selling quite as well as they once were).

    • @BusesInLondon
      @BusesInLondon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, although I prefer it to the Evoseti. I think they can can get orders if they get it right, the evoseti only gets orders as it is cheap, doesnt look good and it gets orders because of the Volvo engine. If they dont plan, it will be a failure.Tbh, I dont know anything about the Olympus but I have heard of the Solo and Versa (isnt the versa similiar to the Metrocity?)

    • @BusesInLondon
      @BusesInLondon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And also, the interior styling is fine, the exterior needs work, I couldnt even find a good angle to produce a good photograph

    • @astock5000
      @astock5000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the issue with the MetroDecker so far has been the lack of a hybrid variant during the period when virtually all orders for double decks from London have been for hybrids. It's too late for the diesel and possibly too soon for the electrics to be built in significant numbers - though assuming more and more routes are eventually converted to electric operation it could work out well if they can get market share from the start.
      Unfortunately in my opinion, the styling doesn't matter in terms of winning orders in London. Obviously due to the tendering system operators will always go for whatever works out cheapest for them overall (subject to delivery times, etc) unlike commercial routes where better buses can bring in more revenue. This comment is getting too long as it is so I'll leave that there.
      The MetroCity is basically a Versa with a flatter front,and therefore shorter overhang, and a few other changes such as flat side windows (on Versas they are curved slightly, this tends to be more noticeable from inside). The Versa itself is based on the Solo, with the front axle behind the entrance door and redesigned bodywork but structurally they are very similar.

    • @BusesInLondon
      @BusesInLondon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually didnt know they didnt have a hybrid version. Yes its probably too late for diesel but they could be placed well for the electric market. The current BYD and the SRM electric does take up too much interior space. The Metrodecker EV doesnt. Oh I thought the Versa and MetroCity were the same! They should have saved some money rather than pumping money into a bus which wont sell.

      What Zit Tooya I've been speaking with a few drivers from Harrow. I've been told that London Sovereign are attempting to take Harrow Weald from metroline as both Edgware and Harrow garages will be overfilled by the time the new contracts start. If this happens, there is a high chance that Sovereign will give the whole of Edgware to Metroline. I'm going to try and have it confirmed but it seems likely.

    Well this is quite a surprise and seems good as far as design and seating capacity is concerned. My concern is I can't see the batteries and don't know the range, how does that compare with a BYD which needs a lot of battery space. Mileage of electric buses in London should be quite good due to regenerative braking but can the Optare go all day on the longer all day routes. As this is a Mickey Mouse made in the back shed at home product I can't see any serious bus company making orders. Good effort but where are those bloody batteries?

    • @BusesInLondon

    I like this bus but . I know it's electric bus but doesn't anyone think that that noise of the bus is annoying a bit ? Overall it's not too bad

      RajhanPlayz It sounds a bit like a modern train. It can be toned down a bit but I think we are just not use to the sound. Imagine hearing a diesel bus engine for the first time, would you find it annoying.

      Pete S. To be fair where I live there's less electric buses . I'm just used to diesels . I just don't like the electric noise in my opinion .

    Why can't electric buses use normal 4-5-6 automatic gearbox?

    • @BusesInLondon

      You need to understand how an electric powertrain works

    • @peterrobannsobrepena6029

      The Juggernaut
      Because it has all the torque that gearbox are unnecessary.
      The gears on Internal Combustion Engine serves as filler for its incapacity to provide power at all speed

    Electric Buses are Bullshit because of the batteries.... why dont we just go back to trolley buses?

    • @BusesInLondon
      @BusesInLondon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really dont get electric buses, they still burn fossil fuels or natural gas and the only advantage is that the emissions are given off elsewhere

    • @transportflick923
      @transportflick923 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BusesInLondon pollution in London is bad so it's better to burn the fuels elsewhere

      thats something that they do in china & as it turns out, all the pollution is pushed by the wind into other towns in the area killing all the locals

    • @BusesInLondon
      @BusesInLondon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      wclifton968 yeah basically the pollution goes elsewhere ...but it is a step in the right direction to prevent people on Oxford Street for example dying from polution

      Why don't you use gasoline powering your phone or any gadgets in your home. Gasoline is Bullshit.
      Everything in your home is powered by electricity. The only deterrence to using electric motor for vehicles is battery technology but as of the moment our batteries are getting better and cheaper that it's inevitable, diesel and gasoline must go like how kerosene did go after Tesla Invented the AC that is powering your home.
