That's true, I went to buy Kahlua once but the store didn't have it so I asked if they could recommend something else, and they gave me an espresso liqueur and my white russians tasted pretty bad.
kingofallcrypto Seconded. Chicory was put in coffee during the Civil War, because of Union blockades, not because it tastes good. Been to NO, ate beignets at CDM, and sipped my cappuccino with a smile as my wife suffered that awful “coffee.”
The kahlua probably would’ve made this drink taste correct. I just had one a few nights ago and it should taste like a milkshake! Lots of ice and a bit of stirring goes a long way too
I knew when he added the St George that he ruined the drink. Kahlua is very sweet, like whipped cream sweet. From how he described the flavor I can tell St George is a very coffee dominant liqueur.
@@howtodrink i was schooled to use milk instead of cream and lightly mix the drink, it looks like when you try out the first drink you only get cream XD but as Michael said, dont mess with the kaluha

Tia Maria if you can’t get Kahlua but Kahlua is better, half and half or creamy milk, a Russian measure of Vodka and enough of the coffee liqueur to give it a coffee like taste but not overpower it and ice.
Stoli is good enough; anything midrange or better works. Best to stay away from piss like Skyy or Vitali - personally I use either Absolut or Smirnoff, depending on what's in my freezer. I've seen folks use Goose and shit but that's a waste of cash to me.
@Jacob Jaywant you definitely mix it, how much is personal preference. me? i like it lightly shaken. and honestly? a dash of amaretto blends the flavors together perfectly.
IMO Stoli is a terrible vodka. You need something relatively neutral, but that does not have a rubbing alcohol nose. (That is why your rum was better.) The coffee liqueur must be sweet with little bitterness, since the vodka raises the bitter notes. Hence, your problem with the chicory coffee and your being fine with your syrup. The cream should also be stirred into the drink. This is not a layered drink, but a new beverage formed through the languid dance of the three ingredients. Abide.
@Heathen I agree. I always mix the cream (or milk) in. And a side note, while a less fumy vodka can be preferable, I personally feel that vodka isn't needed at all, I often swap out the vodka for more coffee liquor. But, that's just me. A tad of spiced rum (or black spiced) is nice, too. Tastes like Christmas.
Alright, everybody, repeat: "You are not supposed to judge a recipe when altering its ingredients on the first try-out." Basically, while you could use a better vodka or pick a different type of cream and maybe get results you'd find more palatable, using a coffee liqueur that's infused with chicory is a *_HUGE_* no-no for a recipe that doesn't call for any bittering agent! Stick to Kahlua or the like.
@@CRZ_PL It's kinda funny, considering how I hate that you can't get your hands on Grand Marnier Cordon-Jaune (the yellow-ribbon) any more without getting someone to sell their stock (this variant has been discontinued), because it has a different flavour profile from the more expensive Cordon-Rouge (the red-ribbon). And that's primarily because CR uses a Cognac base, whereas CJ used spirit. And here we have a chicory-infused coffee liqueur instead of Kahlua. [facepalm] Nooo...
"Better" vodka is a difficult thing to define. In Russia, many of the the best vodkas (not always the most expensive) have neutral flavor, this is highly regarded as a quality of the best vodka. What is interesting, is that in the US Market, some of the cheapest vodkas have the most neutral flavor. This includes Popov! I would not choose Stoli for a White Russian, save it for the 2-3 ingredient mixers... my preference for WR would be Absolut, Sobieski, Tito's, or Popov. Also, the drink should be given a brief, non-violent slush around in the shaker. It chills all the ingredients and helps the fat in the cream combine with the rest of the drink.
@@silvermediastudio Yes, neutral flavour is generally regarded as a good quality; at best, you want the mildest of hints of a flavour, if any. Distinct, notable scents are generally regarded as a defect in Europe.

I really think the St George might be the problem. I LOVE all of their products, but this is one recipe where the Kahlua is the right way to go. It's sweeter and lacks any amount of the bitter that the Chicory is adding.

right Michael..they only drink Chopin and other high end vodkas...not! Poor ass peeps...a lot of Russians have health issues before they're 30 because of lack of fresh foods..and cheap vodka consumption...
Simply 1/3 glass of whisky plus 2/3 glass of full milk. Add sugar to your preference and mandatory ice . It tastes fabulous. I made that once as an experiment and absolutely loved it. Realized later they were drinking it in Scotland ages ago.
Kaluah is a coffee liquor and rum mixture, so that second recipe reminds of a sombrero, which is just Kaluah and cream. It sounds like a fancier way to make it though!
I was watching this one and started thinking "What are you doing man!?" This is how I make mine and I love them 2 ounces Kahlua (THIS IS IMPORTANT, DON'T USE TRENDY CRAP) 3 ounces 100 proof freezer stored Smirnoff 3 ounces half and half (I get mine from a diary, so YMMV, I recommend this is where yous pend your trendy money.) Stir ingredients together gently, pour into 12 ounce glass tumbler over 3 medium cubes (or spheres) of ice.
I have to disagree with the Kahlua. Yes it works perfectly fine, but by God, the Ristretto liqueur by the Galliano brand is divine. Still coffee, but just a little extra smokiness.
„i dont worry too much about precision and technique” he says it right at the start of every video, no wonder he hates his own drink if he cant be bothered to actually try and make it taste good
I know you've revisited the Aviation, you should revisit the White Russian, and make it like this. 1.5 oz Vodka 1.5 oz Coffee Liqueur 2 Oz milk Stir in ice, then add to whiskey glass. Cream is way to heavy. Also adding a bit more Coffee Liqueur gives it a bit more flavour and takes away the harshness of the vodka. It's smooth af and it deserves a place.

He made it like a fucking moron is the reason why. Kahlua's a very *sweet* coffee liqueur, that shit he used is literally a coffee bitter, it could not possibly have been more wrong. When you make a drink ass backwards - it's going to taste like ass.
I saw a recipe for white russian that was: 50 ml freshly made espresso 30ml vodka 1 tbsp simple syrup \ caramel syrup 40ml baileys I made it and it tasted great, it is very sweet... i would probably up the espresso and reduce the baileys to 30ml as it is very dominant, but overall really nice

I don’t worry too much about precision or technique” Some of the people in the comments seem to forget this entirely lol. @Howtodrink - love your videos man and in this particular one (like always) you made it into something you really enjoyed which is wicked! I really want to try your version 👍🏼
When making White Russians, I do incorporate the liquid ingredients together, because the vodka needs to be blended with the other two ingredients to take that harsh edge off the vodka. I also use a bit more Kahlua than normal, because I like flavor and color it brings to the drink. Vodka , in most drinks has to be mixed or allowed the time to join with the other ingredients so it can meld nicely with the flavors of the other ingredients, and a better tasting drink.
First off ... stir it ... So you blend the ingredients .. secondly .. go neural in the vodka and on the coffee liqueur... stoli tastes like you are chewing on an alcohol swab ... yoh want pure coffee liquors.. not exotic with a touch of whatever like your choice .. Just stick with Kaluha.. Belvedere or even Smirnoff.. with Kaluha .. stir the drink and you'll be fine
@@wilsonkowira383 It may be served that way but you should always stir it before drinking. Don't be a fucking mong. Otherwise you're drinking straight up cream and not tasting anything else.
Personally I prefer rum to vodka anyway so I'm eager to try th version you made. I'm not much of a vodka guy, maybe you aren't either, it can be good but definitely not my drink of choice.
I got a free bottle of whip cream vodka, didn't know what to do with it then started making white russians with it and its pretty good. I do a bit less vodka and more coffee liquor. And I am one of those people who usually use half and half. The one he makes looks REALLY good!
I'm not a drinker, but a few months ago my roommates got me into trying alcohol. my first drink was vodka and my first thought was vodka and cold brew. I can tell by your reaction that I will probably love this drink.
It has clearly been a while since you posted this video but give the White Russian a chance, it is a fantastic drink. Here in the UK and under good guidance from friends who are mixologists (that's the title they got after having rather too much enthusiasm for cocktails) but the measurements we use are 1 part vodka, 1/2 part kahlua or Cafe patron and then a milk and double cream mix to top out the drink.
Greg, do you need to keep the coffee syrup (and the Simple Syrup, fruit syrups, Grenadine, etc.) refrigerated, or do they stay out on top of the bar? I've recently started making cocktails at home, and I'm learning the basics.
How To Drink It's actually supposed to be a carefully stirred drink. A lot of bars make cocktails for speed and a lot of bartenders do NOT know or remember how to correctly make every drink. If you look at the IBA recipe it also says to stir the drink. iba-world.com/cocktails/black-russian/
I love white russians myself but I've never had one that wasn't at least a _little_ incorporated. It seems weird to me that you wouldn't mix it up. What's the deal? That sip looked like mostly heavy cream. How DARE you! But also please never stop doing what you do.
Depending on where in Russia/Ukraine, I've heard it pronounced instead of the eech sound, slightly more ich... But not all the way. Kind of between ee and ih.

ttxxdd He redid the White Russian video and he made it properly.
That rug really tied the room together
You butchered the pronunciation of Stolichnaya beyond imagination.
You're welcome!
Americans can't pronounce shit, but they gave us the The Big Lebowski, so its not all bad.
It is pronounced like Stoleetshnaya ("Capital vodka" )
but nobody drink this shit in Russia
right Michael..they only drink Chopin and other high end vodkas...not! Poor ass peeps...a lot of Russians have health issues before they're 30 because of lack of fresh foods..and cheap vodka consumption...
"Donnie you're out of your element!"
How To Drink no he's pointing out that you should get the quote correctly
King in the North I knows it man, I’m also quoting the film. This is some nice good natured ribbing here.
..cuz half of TH-camrs are on something..
this was the first drink i had when i just turned 18 i went with my brothers and cousins to a bar and i love it
Fun fact! This is my dad's favorite drink! He is kinda a coffee freak anyways, and he's been sober for almost two decades, proud o' you, pop!
He used to take it with heavy cream, too!
I was watching this one and started thinking "What are you doing man!?"
This is how I make mine and I love them
2 ounces Kahlua (THIS IS IMPORTANT, DON'T USE TRENDY CRAP)
3 ounces 100 proof freezer stored Smirnoff
3 ounces half and half (I get mine from a diary, so YMMV, I recommend this is where yous pend your trendy money.)
Stir ingredients together gently, pour into 12 ounce glass tumbler over 3 medium cubes (or spheres) of ice.
I have to disagree with the Kahlua. Yes it works perfectly fine, but by God, the Ristretto liqueur by the Galliano brand is divine. Still coffee, but just a little extra smokiness.
The dude abides .
First ever video I ever watched from you.
You made a terrible version of a great beverage. Don't blame the recipe, blame the cook
Stir the drink man.
„i dont worry too much about precision and technique” he says it right at the start of every video, no wonder he hates his own drink if he cant be bothered to actually try and make it taste good
I know you usually do a LOT of abbreviations from the standard recipes, but this time you really took it to a new level.
YOU'RE NOT A PRO? YOU SURPRISE ME!
Chicory root did you in man. Any other coffee liquor wouldve done the trick. But *NEVER* add that chicory root St. Georges liquor.
I know you've revisited the Aviation, you should revisit the White Russian, and make it like this.
1.5 oz Vodka
1.5 oz Coffee Liqueur
2 Oz milk
Stir in ice, then add to whiskey glass. Cream is way to heavy. Also adding a bit more Coffee Liqueur gives it a bit more flavour and takes away the harshness of the vodka. It's smooth af and it deserves a place.
Started doing a series called Chaser! It’s a little more vloggy but it lets me do follow ups on these videos easier: Chaser: White Russianth-cam.com/video/9d24SBVEWKc/w-d-xo.html
Man the channel has come a long way, from already being great hahaha
In Poland we mix milk and hazelnut vodka- drink is called 'monte'- it taste like candies, if you have chance really try this.
I just successfully dieted, the drink you’re describing would undo a lot of hard work...
I know it’s a super simple drink but an Irish Coffee video would be cool imo
That's like you opinion man
Do a white russian topped with coke. It'll taste like a rootbeer float. The drink is called a colorado bulldog
I remember making a version of this I called the "Dark Commie." It was 100 proof Vodka, 70 Proof Kahlua Especial and Baileys Irish Creme.
Sounds awesome, I'll try it some day lol.
How does anyone hate White Russian? I hate coffee in general, but I still love that stuff.
He made it like a fucking moron is the reason why. Kahlua's a very *sweet* coffee liqueur, that shit he used is literally a coffee bitter, it could not possibly have been more wrong. When you make a drink ass backwards - it's going to taste like ass.
What I learned today is that good rum is good.
Try Smirnoff and kahlua. That medicine flavor is not normal!!!
I guess I'm gonna have to!
Making it with some of the most intolerable vodka I can think of is a bad start
My first White Russian in 1986 was a combination of one part vodka, one part Kahlua and two parts cream. Try Chopin Potato Vodka.
..what I'm drinking right now..Smirnoff Kahlua and almond mild..niceeeeeeeee........
Smirnoff is garbage.
Nothing against the original recipe, but I'm Cuban and I approve of his Havana Club infused drink...
But you know, that's like my opinion man🤷🏻♂️
You have to use the heavy cream, it really ties the drink together.
"Ch" in "Stolichnaya" sounds exactly like in the words "Check" or "Challenge"
stole-itch-knee-yaaaaaaa
Just call it Stoli and life is good
.........0:38.....ELEMENT......Donny is out of his fucking element sir....i appreciate the nod to the movie, but this is standard knowledge....
animalmother556x45 I cringed too
animalmother556x45 big facts
Oof. I know. How did nobody catch that!!!?!?!? Deadly sin.
...pissy bitches...
animalmother556x45 shut the fuck up Donny
I saw a recipe for white russian that was:
50 ml freshly made espresso
30ml vodka
1 tbsp simple syrup
\ caramel syrup
40ml baileys
I made it and it tasted great, it is very sweet... i would probably up the espresso and reduce the baileys to 30ml as it is very dominant, but overall really nice
I missed you Greg :(
I missed you too!
“I’ve never been a professional bartender. I’ve never even had a job in a bar. I don’t worry too much about precision or technique”
Some of the people in the comments seem to forget this entirely lol. @Howtodrink - love your videos man and in this particular one (like always) you made it into something you really enjoyed which is wicked! I really want to try your version 👍🏼
MY BOY IS BACK! Also, White Russians are amazing!
not for me...
How To Drink yes they are
And i still dig your show
Greg I fucking missed you, and this is my FAVORITE drink! Awesome!
I missed you too!
We use Bailey’s Irish cream instead of the heavy cream lmao.
That makes it a Blind Russian, does it not?
That’s a Mudslide. Very tasty!
Yuck had a bartender make it that way once by accident it was horrible.
same way i make them, 2 shots Stolie, 2 shots Kahlua, 2 shots Baileys, shake and pour over ice
Turquoise There’s two types of mudslides: the cocktail and the frozen. The frozen one’s better.
Missed you dude! Such good content, always inspires me to try and make whatever you do on the show!
Best spill - maybe because this is an older video before he got his style, but the ONLY spillage looks to be at 4:09.
Frank E belvedere to smirnoff wow thaz a steep road bro :)
Ever heard of layered?
It served that way idiot
Oof belvedere is really expensive to use in cocktails imho. Black or silver 360 does the job as well and costs half of that
@@wilsonkowira383 It may be served that way but you should always stir it before drinking. Don't be a fucking mong. Otherwise you're drinking straight up cream and not tasting anything else.
1: lift cup to open mouth
2: angle cup so beverage falls into mouth
3: close mouth and swallow
4: repeat until drink is finished
Thanks and dont forget to piss
@@mrlahey5995 about two or three times
@@cantu7214 maybe four
That drink really tied whole movie together
Personally I prefer rum to vodka anyway so I'm eager to try th version you made. I'm not much of a vodka guy, maybe you aren't either, it can be good but definitely not my drink of choice.
Manhattan Special - YES! Well done, sir!
“You make one hell of a Caucasian Jackie!” That’s what it looked like you were thinking after you tasted that White Russian lol
Havana Club rum? Colin approves.
I've noticed you're more of a rum person, probably why I like your stuff.
You're back! Thanks for the video Greg!
THANK YOU!
I got a free bottle of whip cream vodka, didn't know what to do with it then started making white russians with it and its pretty good. I do a bit less vodka and more coffee liquor. And I am one of those people who usually use half and half. The one he makes looks REALLY good!
I love those slo-mo pouring shots.
I always use equal parts of everything in a white Russian, always tasted better that way. Just might have been adding too much of the base liquor.
I'm not a drinker, but a few months ago my roommates got me into trying alcohol. my first drink was vodka and my first thought was vodka and cold brew.
I can tell by your reaction that I will probably love this drink.
It tasted terrible from the stoli and the heavy cream
Should be 50/50
it was the chickory it ruins coffee, don't understand why anyone would want to use it in a White Russian
Its definitely the coffee liquor you used. You have to use kalua.
I want that black Cuban! That looks so good. I need to make one
Greg, do you need to keep the coffee syrup (and the Simple Syrup, fruit syrups, Grenadine, etc.) refrigerated, or do they stay out on top of the bar? I've recently started making cocktails at home, and I'm learning the basics.
I've been subbing the vodka in my white russians for rum ever since I first tried one. It's now my favorite drink.
Good to know about New Orleans coffee, as I’m actually allergic to chicory root! 🫣
Stir the damn drinks.
Iceberg4k1 ikr? It's fucking amateur to not stir
You order this drink in any bar on earth it’s a layered drink. Every cocktail guide written, including the IBA, regards it as a layered drink.
How To Drink
It's actually supposed to be a carefully stirred drink. A lot of bars make cocktails for speed and a lot of bartenders do NOT know or remember how to correctly make every drink. If you look at the IBA recipe it also says to stir the drink.
iba-world.com/cocktails/black-russian/
shaken or stirred and i think you do not have no taste buds if you don't like it.
I've had this at dozens of bars and it has always been stirred.
"I hate this drink." lmao, that was quick!
Hello from Australia,
Really enjoying your channel.
I love white russians myself but I've never had one that wasn't at least a _little_ incorporated. It seems weird to me that you wouldn't mix it up. What's the deal?
That sip looked like mostly heavy cream. How DARE you! But also please never stop doing what you do.
That just looks like, so good. I love Coffee in a Doctors office man
From 2022 - damn you look young, Dude.
1:38 Greg you murdered that pronunciation, it's pronounced like stoleechnye-a
Depending on where in Russia/Ukraine, I've heard it pronounced instead of the eech sound, slightly more ich... But not all the way. Kind of between ee and ih.
This actually made me subscribe.
sips....
"I hate this drink"
Tastes like coffee and a doctors office mixed up together....omg that is horrible.
Honesty is the best policy! Glad I won you over!
@@howtodrink Yeah but ignorance is another story. You didn't even make the drink properly.
@@modetallah
la la la la la, He already fucking knows la lala la la la la
I make mine with the coffee syrup too. It’s got that sweetness that the drink needs so much
