- It's a multi-billion dollar global industry creating ‘miracle babies’.
One in every 18 births in Australia is now a result of IVF.
But when things go wrong, who is holding these fertility clinics to account?
Four Corners reporter Grace Tobin investigates incidents of the wrong sperm being used to conceive children, a serial donor with potentially 700 offspring, and a lab contamination that destroyed precious embryos.
She meets the women and their partners fighting back against Virtus Health, Monash IVF and Genea, to get access to their own medical information and going to whatever lengths it takes to force clinics to put patients before profits.
This episode was originally broadcast as ‘When IVF goes wrong’ on 24 June 2024 on ABC TV and ABC iview.

I was a QFG patient and my daughter has a medical condition that only could have come from the donor. It’s important to share information with other donor families
We need laws that allow patients to sue these firms promptly if there is no explanation for mistakes. Every clinic and doctor makes mistakes - the way you deal with them is to be transparent and to apologise as soon as possible. Not to cover up and obfuscate and lie. And the guy with schizophrenia that fathered 700 people. WTAF?
Nobody with schizophrenia should be allowed to donate sperm without stating that it clearly for parents to decide.
Do they not screen these donors? This is awful! Donors donating under different names? Donating with a schizophrenia diagnosis? This is malpractice!
Yeah but what if a boy and a girl have the same father and one day grow up and meet and fall in love or something like that. Thats pretty scary and dangerous
A devastating watch !! Greedy organisations should be shut down
Need a class action
I had fertility problems. In the end I didn't need ivf. But I was sure - if I need ivf, we are gonna do paternity and maternity testing right after birth.
1 in 18 is IVF?????? WTH!
Down the road everyone is going to need DNA tests if they want to have children- to make sure they aren’t related.
The hospital make the wrong move. Should have apporach the couples with good will and shut them down
Corporate Greed! Disgusting, preying and exploiting couples in a vulnerable position. Sadly, this is not an isolated sector, corporate power needs to be controlled eg. Supermarkets also.
As someone on tbe spectrum, diagnosed over a decade ago, and an adult living a happy life, I'm concerned that people don't want us or see us NOT through the accepted neurodiversity model.
Those pin up detective boards are a must!
I can only pray that God opens their hearts so they stop treating humans like products.
Is there an international Facebook support group or contact list for donor DNA anywhere?
The GOVERNMENT is funding these entities! What kind of oversight do they have?
Im speechless
Simply outrageous
Horrible that this is just a money making business and not anything else.
Ivf is a money making scam
Human trafficking.
Are donors paid in Australia?
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
I'm trying to watch this interesting video but being swamped with ads. Why would there be ads on an ABC program?
You should install an adblocker. I don't see ads on my TH-cam anymore, as long as I'm using my browser. I get ads on the phone app still.
The women may have received the wrong sperm BUT the donor was on the program. He was obviously considered a suitable donor.
Only suitable according to the information the donor gave.
My thought exactly! Why was he there in the first place if his sperm was not healthy? I felt so bad for these families, such a traumatic experience and they are still not getting the closures they deserved :(
@@libbyinaustralia he was there because he was paid for the sperm.
How do they weed out bad sperm if the man is not truthful. Is not making sure he is truthful about his health history part of the process? Trouble is when big business gets involved with healthcare and fertility, making babies is a lucrative money maker. This is so heart-breaking for the families involved. I made the decision not to have children because of medical issues, I did not want to pass on. To me, that was being accountable, yet these fertility clinics seem to disregard proper procedures, accountability if they mess up, than refuse to give the needed info to affected families. And the public is supposed to trust them? That is just sick.
Feel so awful for these families 😢
Stop ivf full stop
Adoption?
It's not for everyone, especially when thinking about the well being of the child
I was adopted 69yrs ago have no regrets 🙂
I agree
Ah a massive company gets away with it again............what a shock !!!!
Ridiculous. The industry should be ashamed. Give the regulators more power. Force transparency through legislation. It's disgusting that these kind of medical cover-ups are still taking place in the face of overwhelming evidence.
Public funds = full transparency. Bottom line!
Exactly! How the hell can they get away with this? It's disgusting.
They get away with it because the inside is corrupt! The agenda has always been the same (the sicker we are or become) = their pockets to fill with 💰💰💰
It is an absolute shame - I hope justice will be served
Why doesn't the company redact the words that reveal the identities of the patients?
The way those women look after each other at the end... truly beautiful to see.
22:34 to 24:38 this part speaks volume
Im a ivf baby born in 1989 lol❤
What a mess
This is so heartbreaking 🥺
Congratulations to the beautiful sisters SOPHIE AND AMELIA !!!!!
Fraud!
Wow
i can't help ask, what do you want from these IVF companies? what will make it right for you? what is the end point that will satisfy you?
