"One Summer -Two Messerschmitts" The story of TWO Daimler-Benz engined 109s

  • In the summer of 1995 there were TWO Messerschmitt 109G variants in residence at Duxford Airfield. Black 6, one of the worlds most authentic aircraft restorations and 109G “Black 2” flown by the Old Flying Machine Company.
This Film takes a look at both aircraft on the ground and in the air. There is also interviews with some of the team behind “Black 6” as well as an interview with a pilot who has flown both Spitfires and a 109.
Highlights include a stunning 109, vs Spitfire dogfight sequence, amazing air-to air of “Black 6” and an in-cockpit camera.
Featuring minimal commentary and maximum sound FX this is not a history of the 109, but an up close and personal look at how these legendary aircraft are rebuilt and operated.
If you’ve never been lucky enough to see a 109 fly, this is the next best thing
Filmed before the days of widescreen and High Definition this film is presented in it's 4:3 aspect ratio

My grandpa told me that spitfire learned him how to swim. I brought him over to Duxford in 1999 where he met his former opponents who became close friends later. Now most of them are gone. Heartbreaking to see these old warriors standing there hand in hand honouring their fallen. We should never forget. Thank you so much for uploading.

One of the best parts in this show is that the pilot flying BLACK6 opened the cowl flaps ensuring the engine temperature remained where it should be.
Unlike its final flight where the pilot neglected to do so causing the engine temperature to climb, the pilot to panic and shove the thing at the ground.
    Nice piloting that

Same here, my dad took me to see The Battle of Britain, it affected me like nothing before. I've found pictures of the guy in my thumbnail pic. Some friends thought it was me dressed up when younger, image of me in my 20s. I absolutely believe he was me in a past life, and my lifelong obsession with WW2 aviation, especially when I came across an old copy of I flew for the fuhrer. It's the only thing that gets me teary eyed, I don't cry over anything, and haven't since I was a lad. I've seen more people talk about this recently,

I had no idea that "Black 6" was still capable of flight . I assumed she was damaged beyond flight ("make certain you 3 point her!" ) and returned to display standard only. I do remember watching "Black 6" dicing with a Spitfire at Gloucester and their V12 's sounding remarkably similar although the Daimler Benz sounded much quieter than that beauttiful Merlin . Many thanks .

I guess you and I have both grown up to know these aircraft as schoolboy icons and to see them flown, meticulously, in largely sterile conditions for exhibition purposes. I can see and buy in to your standpoint but I think we must keep reminding ourselves that they were designed as weapons of destruction, their time and circumstances were corrosive of the human spirit and they themselves were places of mortal danger and death. It is wrong in my view to give the aircraft greater prominence and personality than the men who flew them and when the aircraft become more of a bauble and an entertainment than a window on the era, which gave being to them, I have to wonder what the point is. In one of my last conversations with my Grandmother, she described her nephew to me, who was killed in a Hurricane. “Thing of beauty”, “Pretty” and “Charismatic” are a misguided frame of reference for these artifacts in my opinion.

@@jonathanlewis453 All very valid points, and that facts of these being killing machines had never been far from my mind. That being said, come forward a generation and the same thing occurs with the Vulcan, Valiant, and Victor. All deadly yet all beautiful. Yet when I look and see killing machines from the USSR and even Germany with an artists perspective I see more practicality then aesthetically pleasing designs. Yet these items of destruction all elements of beauty to the beholder no matter where we're from and who we sided with at the time. I was brought up soon after the war and so patriotism will always have an influence with me. Take a good hard look at a Lancaster, and really there's a killing device that isn't pretty at all, yet when I see one, I'm taken by seeing something that's so ugly, it's beautiful.
Wwll, that me anyway, for what it is. Thank you for your reply, it's great to see their are still some based people about in times of division and open hatred Take care Johnathon.

This might be off topic, but as a B-24 pilot in the 15th, my father saw plenty of 109s and also, of course, 190s. One remark he made I haven't heard elsewhere; he said there was nothing friendly about the German fighters. I replied well, sure, they were trying to shoot you down. He said yes, of course, but they were filthy, splattered with oil, not all clean and shiny like Allied figthers. The German crews didn't have time to clean them up, just refuel, rearm and off they went. He said the effect made them look particularly nasty and lethal as they screamed thru your squadron. @@jonathanlewis453

There is a famous photo of Douglas Bader seated in a BF 109 when a prisoner of war, examining the cockpit. Looking up at him is a Luftwaffe officer. The photo has been faked to put into the German officer’s hand what looks like a pistol, covering Bader if he tried to start the 109 and escape. The opening sequence of this video shows how a 109 was started, and how impossible Bader’s escape would have been. The Bader photo was faked after the British received it to make it clear that Bader was neither a deserter nor a collaborator.
