    I learned to fly in a 2 seat Rotec Rally that had been converted to a single seat. It was an albatross, 32 foot wing span, stall speed 18 MPH top speed 32MPH with a Rotax single carb 503. It got tossed around bad in just a little wind. It had spoilerons on top of the wing for roll, and the wings were slightly swept back so the rudder would give you a little more roll. The tail was normal, and the pusher was nearly level with the elevator so it had awesome response. It was a tail dragger so driving it around on the ground with the tail off the ground just became second nature. It did everything slow, so it seemed like slow motion. When it came off the ground at 18mph and climbed at 300 ft/min it was like waiting for molasses to freeze in summer. I had an engine out situation, and I found a spot and could have taken a nap waiting to get there. I landed with no problem, pulled the plugs, called for a ride to get new ones at NAPA, went and got them, and it took longer to fly back home than it did to get the plugs and get back in the air. But anyway, then I built a CGS Hawk ultralight and it was just a little over weight. So I got a BRS for it and with the allowance I was back under. So I thought about the difference in weight of the Rotax 447 and the Rotax 503, did the math and ordered the 503. I had to lose a little weight so I got rid of the electric start and still needed a couple more pounds. I started looking at all the steel hardware and found it by changing 38 bolts with castle nuts and cotter pins to titanium AN hardware. I made the weight limit but the speed was awesome and the climb out went to 900 ft/min. So if you want an ultralight that makes weight and still goes 63 mph ( at 4300 rpm, VNE of airframe was 110mph) the CGS hawk is for you.

    The aero light looks fun. I had a challenger ultralight, it wasn’t legal.. the previous owner missed the window to get an n number. I got it for $600. I loved it. My himax was a blast too. That cost totaled at $4500. I had a ridge runner…. Like the badlands. It was fun. But no more fun than the other two…. But about 60 times the cost.

    In Europe these are called "trikes". The word "ultralight" over here means something a two seater aircraft allowing up to 650 kg MTOW, a comfy heated cabin with adjustable seats, full instrumentation, large fuel tanks in the wings, retractable landing gears and cross-Europe range capacity. No speed limit. Both trikes and ultralights however require a national UL-pilot's license.

    • @MrMontanaNights
      @MrMontanaNights หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of these would be classified as Microlights in Europe. Your Ultralights are similar to our Light Sport Aircraft (LSA).

    • @thomaskolb8785
      @thomaskolb8785 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrMontanaNightsThese trikes in the video would still fall under the various national ”Ultralight” categories and require the same licensing, training and operative modes. Ultralight aviation is slowly getting incorporated into the EASA LSA category with its 600 kg MTOW.

    • @MrMontanaNights
      @MrMontanaNights หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thomaskolb8785 Oh interesting. I thought microlights were more like us 103 ultralights. From what I understand, it also depends on the country right? Some adopt their own rules for ultraights/microlights and others just adopt the EASA rules? Poland for example has an exemption for sub 115kg ultralights. and is basically just a copy of the US Part 103 regulations. No license or airworthiness certificate for them.

    • @thomaskolb8785
      @thomaskolb8785 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrMontanaNights I am not familiar withe the Polish regulations, but such a light aircraft (i.e. for a twin seater below 450 kg + 25 kg for recovery system) falls under the the EASA Annex II to the Basic Regulations chapter. It is then not considered an EASA type aircraft and becomes a subject of national rules. Most European Ultralight aircraft are constructed to precisely shoehorn in under the weight restrictions (475 kg MTOM).

    Has anyone studied using the BMW oil-cooled flat two cylinder motorcycle engine? The 1200cc version as found in the BMW R1200R/RS/RT is electric start, electronic ignition and digital fuel-injected that makes around 100 HP and has a separate dry clutch and transmission that can be easily deleted. Perhaps the push-rod engine can be tuned to directly drive a prop at a reasonable RPM.

    I met one fellow who equated 'No License Required' = 'No Training Required'. FOOL! He bought his ultra light, fueled it, lined up on the runway, and rolled left to the bushes (No idea what the rudder did), 'Fred Flintsoned' back out and tried again. Same Result, right? Spot on, same result! Third is the charm, he figures he's got it. This time he gets about 20 feet into the air, veers left again, into the tree tops, and drops tail first to the runway in a crash. No injuries, but a large hit in the wallet.

      I spent 7 years building a foam/fiber glass UL that flew perfectly from the start and was comparatively quick and agile but I doubt I'd have lived without first taking lessons to solo. First flight I made the flattest full speed wide turns possible and landed at speed without flaring. I literally couldn't stand after landing and sat on the wing root with my arms crossed until I calmed down. After about 50 hours I sold it because they're very boring except take off and landings and light wing loading makes for very bumpy rides and they stop flying pretty fast without enough speed. Point is solo should be required.

      I worked aviation ground support. Once a mini Piper Cub with a 1/2 VW engine broke its tail wheel off on landing. It looked like it was bolted to a piece of 2x4.
      We went out on a golf cart, put the tail on the back, and held on while we towed it in. A week later, it was fixed.
      The day he departed, the wind was 330 at 20-30 kts. The plane was based about 20 miles north-west. It took over 30 minutes for him to leave the tower airspace. As we watched him leave, we were wondering if he would have enough fuel to make it to his destination, or would have to return for 5 more gallons.
